    Something I noticed in the movie that really caught me were the references to the Lebanon hostage crisis as well as the Birmingham Six / Guildford Four / Maguire Seven. All of which were cases of people being wrongfully held against their will, much like Julie was being held by Anthony. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I thought it was interesting.

    • @Indietrix
      @Indietrix 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      4Darco really good point. Also the moment where her reading of a note from Anthony is interrupted by the sound of a bombing (i guess the Harrods bombing). a sudden moment of violence inserted into an otherwise romantic scene

      @siena88 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      But Julie is not held against her will. On the contrary, she wants him around and is quite as much addicted to him and the world of thoughts he embodies as he is hooked on heroin.

    Maybe it's just me, but I don't really understand why many reviewers put an emphasis on the main heroine, Julie's, *privileged position*. There are tons of quite popular movies which are tone deaf about money and social standing and yet demand you to feel sympathy towards exaggerated problems. On the contrary, I found Julie a pleasant young woman, not spolied or bratty in any way. Just because she isn't struggling financially doesn't automatically make her unlikable. More so, the overall quiet and unsentimental tone of the movie only served to make her more sympathetic, the way she just couldn't shake off the terrible spell of Tom Burke's character.

      Because it plays into the relationship she has with Anthony, and the movie she herself I trying to make.

      Thank You‼︎ I was literally just trying to make this point to someone who had argued otherwise. My humble perspective as to why there is an emphasis from viewers on the socioeconomic status of these characters is primarily because we live in such an extremely fractured socioeconomic time right now; therefore, it seems to me that the the negative emphasis by some viewers on the 'Class issue' within this film speaks volumes about the world we are living in today, as opposed to a genuine reaction to the film itself. Very glad you brought this up. Moreover, I completely agree with you about the heroine of the film, portrayed by Honor Swinton - despite her family perhaps being better-off than many, in no way is there a sense of arrogance or superiority portrayed [directly or indirectly] in the film. Furthermore, it seems to me that some people simply did not like the slower pacing of the film and the skeletal, atmospheric drive, rather than a more plot-driven film... So, perhaps the viewers who disliked this film did so out of boredom and retroactively attribute it to socioeconomics when articulating their dislike. -- This is definitely not a film for everyone, but the exploits of an apathetic, decadent rich girl this film is not‼︎ For what it's worth, I supremely loved this film. It hit me on a visceral level, rather than being a piece of cinema that I just 'intellectually appreciate.'

      @@NYmonk88 You are welcome!) One more thing I can add to this conversation - it's a mystery to me why the poster of the movie has a picture of the main characters in Venice as if Venice is somehow integral to the plot. Maybe there is a diferent cut of the movie where it has more to it, but in the version I've seen this trip takes about 5 minutes of the runtime and, speaking of "exploits", this is when Tom tries to kind of introduce Julie to this way of life (old-fashioned, but not a good way, in an actually pretentious and stilted way) and she looked uncomfortable, unnatural and miserable.

    • @michaelagampe7685
      @michaelagampe7685 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@renata8979 i guess i found the reason for this poster. They are mirrored on it ! It's a kind of reality and a kind of virtuellity in it.
      We know much about what Julie feels, but we know so few about Anthony.
      I'm curious about Part 2!

      If you actually were able to find all - or the majority - of songs in this film, I would be very grateful if you wouldn't mind sharing. ....There is specifically one song that I tried to find, to no avail. There is a song in the scene when the heroine [Honor Swinton] puts a cassette in the boombox, while at the same time Anthony is cooking something in the kitchen. The cassette then plays what sounds like an early Bowie B-side or something like that. If you have any idea to what I am referring, and are willing to divulge your findings, please do - either here or shoot me a message, if able to do so via TH-cam. ....BTW, loved this film as well

    Reminded me of 'By the Sea' by then-together Brangelina. In a similar way this is a typical Tilda Swinton film, the upper class romanticizing fest. I agree 100% the acting was top-notch. But personally I prefer to find something likable about the characters I'm watching and the protagoist's babish rich girl antics were quite disgusting to sit through for 2+ hours.

    I remember I watched L'Argent at film school and thought it was so dull, my lecturer said I should read a little book about it, which I did and then I thought it was the best film ever, a work of genius about alienation in society. I was very bored watching 'Souvenir' I tried to remember my thoughts on Renais's 'L'argent,' while watching it but no, I didn't feel anything...i didn't care about the characters. The film tried to touch on too many issues but ultimately I didn't care about any of them because it was all so fragmented, detached and dull ...if that was the idea then she should have went all out towards expressing that instead of distracting me with so many other things. I just felt it was a film to express her crazy time when she was young and carefree and reckless...but it just showed me that she lived such a secluded life. What might have been crazy for her i.e being rich and having lived amongst mere morals at film school and had a junky boyfriend in a time when the IRA were active isn't really that interesting and out there (or at least not in the way it was portrayed in this film)...go to a Wetherspoons pub at 9am and speak to one of the old punters there, trust me you'll find a better story for a script...but unfortunately they don't have money to get there story out there like Hogg does. If she'd done a film about the difficulty of being accepted for her class and how this alienated her and how she tried to cope with the situation that might have been a bit more engaging..I think having Tilda Swinton (who I love) and Martin Scorsese (who I love) involved has got everybody creaming their pants.
    She's doing Souvenir 2, can't wait, she better get a book published about it before it comes out!!!

      Pablo Robertson totally agree with your review. One of the dullest and most pretentious film I’ve ever watched

    • @NYmonk88
      @NYmonk88 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      - I respect all sincere and considered opinions, and while I totally disagree with your review, I appreciate that it is at least not just a quick reaction. I think the dullness you refer to is less about Hogg attempting to portray what to her was the 'carefree' years of her Youth; for instance when taking note of her repertoire of films, they all focus on upper-middle to upper class people and families, they all have a slower tone, the plots are all skeletal, and any pathos felt is amorphous, indirect - a product of the atmosphere rather than very specific scenes. ----- You mention Hogg focuses on too many issues - this in particular I really do not know of what you are referring. It is a love story with one character in film school while in those formative years of young adulthood, while the other lover is a junkie who to some degree hides his illness, or at the least is simply not the stereotype of a junkie, as is done in the majority of films that do portray an addict. I got the sense that anything and everything external to the toxic relationship [i.e; The IRA, socio-economics, the wildness of youth, etc] was frankly a bit of world-building, as opposed to a fragment within the plot. .... All in all, I felt The Souvenir was a shot beautifully, acted brilliantly, produced very well and hit me in my core. For what it is worth, I didn't know Tilda Swinton was in the film until viewing, let alone that Scorsese produced it until I finished watching it. The last thing i will say is that I can understand how this is definitely not a film for everyone, and more so - that it will not illicit an emotional response from everyone. Irrespective of the issues explored in the film, the very fact that these characters 'have money' as you say is unfortunately an aspect that I think becomes a stumbling-block for many viewers who can't look past it and therefore find it pretentious, boring, and unwilling to even try and empathize with the characters and the situation these two find themselves in.

      @JR-hi9bu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not necessarily. I think he does some extremely manipulative things to satisfy his addiction, stealing and lying constantly, then showering her with attention when she begins to tire of him, but it's more to satisfy his addiction, which he attempts to end near the end (with the window smashing and all) although he does it unsuccessfully

      @@lauraf.e2788 maybe you'll have to make clear your definition of a narcissist. I don't think he's without empathy anyhow, his addiction just compels him to treat her in the way that he does, but he does ultimately attempt some change with his unsuccessful attempts at withdrawal. He doesn't seem to be without empathy, or even self-obsessed, just endlessly attempting to feed the great big beast eating him from the inside

      @JR-hi9bu 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lauraf.e2788 this still puzzles me. It seems whatever I say that seems to contradict your rather vague definition you just append to your own little list of narcissistic behaviours. He has an addiction and, to satisfy it, he manipulates the main character. By the beast I meant the addiction, but you've bent it into something within all narcissists. As is shown, shaking an addiction to heroin is extremely painful and difficult, and so he at times exploits the main girl, but does ultimately attempt to end his addiction, which is successful until he relapses and dies. This is typical of many addicts, it doesn't at all make them narcissists, and I really can't match the vagueries of your definition with the confidence of your being able to 'see it a mile away' or whatever you said in your original comment.
