I really liked how the secondary characters were portrayed in Booksmart. Usually, with teen comedies, you have the nerdy protagonist with horrible cliquey bullies causing them grief, some kind of change happens and the nerds get their revenge but in Booksmart you find out that actually the nerds were the ones being judgemental and that actually most of the popular kids are quite welcoming in the end. It's a good spin on the usual tropes.

Yes that is true @Duke Wellington, however that's my point - you don't see these 'older' style films being made as often these days. In a era where 'Big is Better', this is rather refreshing in the current cinema Zeitgeist.

I found it almost perfect. Easy to take in and enjoy but so uplifting and you feel such a genuine love for ALL the characters at the end, which I find so refreshing.
It's the perfect movie to capture our young generation and our times and makes me feel nostalgia for something that isn't even over yet. I never thought I'd say it... but I'm really going to miss school.

I liked the movie, but my main issue with it is that the world in it feels pretty artificial, shallow and empty. If we take the Superbad for example, that world feels like it's moving on its own, like people in it have their own ideas, motivations and routine. In the Booksmart it felt like people were just appearing for the main characters out of nowhere and went into idle mode behind the scenes
I hope I described it right

Saw the film on Monday and it is terrific, but the comparisons to superbad are definitely legitimate. After a recent rewatch superbad is also really well directed and both tender and poignant beneath it's vulgar jokes.

I enjoyed it. It succeeding in making me nostalgic for my school/university days. And it had a cracking soundtrack.
But I thought it was trying too hard to be cool. Too much time was wasted on slightly loopy dialogue, and not enough on building a story and motivating the characters. You never really felt that anything was at stake and everything resolved itself too easily. So for me, it was only half a movie. And that's why it will never be held in the same regard as Superbad or the great 80's movies which inspired it.

I may not think the film is quite as brilliant as some people will have you believe (I found it a little uneven and it indulges is tropes at times) but trust me when I say it’s downright INSPIRED in places. Some of the funniest comedic set pieces I’ve seen in the cinema in recent years carried by two fantastic central performances. You will never be able to listen to “You Oughta Know” in the same way ages. 7.5/10

Mark says that calling it the female Superbad undercuts it and yet when he talks about what Booksmart really is about he could just as easily be talking about Superbad. Don't mean that to put down Booksmart. Can't wait to see it and if it's half as good as Superbad, which I expect it to be, it'll be one of my favorites of the year.

I know the comparison between this and Superbad seems lazy but its practically the same storyline and definitely drew a lot from the improvisational dialogue style that Superbad did so well. Superbad was groundbreaking in the teen comedy genre - it had heart and genuinely believable characters, which the American Pie sex comedy era failed to achieve. Booksmart was a wonderful film but let's not downplay its clear influences. I do think, however, that "Superbad for girls" is a bad way to describe it. It's not just for girls, obviously many parts will be more relatable to females but this isn't a chick-flick, just like Superbad wasn't "for boys".

Nah, sorry it was not for me. Always hurts when a comedy you've heard so much about disappoints, and i love coming of age dramas and comedies. There was no time taken to flesh out the characters (maybe the two leads, but not realty anyone else) , scenes that went nowhere and plot points that were unanswered. I just saw a bunch of rich high schoolers being portrayed in a very stereotypical fashion. But maybe its my age, I'm in my 30s and I'm guessing I'm not the target demographic for this one. A miss for me.

"I thought it was closer to bridesmaids than superbad because it's a movie about friendship"
What do you think Superbad was about? Seriously, there's no better description for this movie than "SUPERBAD but for girls". It's a movie about two highschool friends on a mission to get to a party (just like Superbad) because it's their last night together (just like Superbad), and both want to find someone else in the party (just like Superbad), but deep down both are kind of scared about their friendship being over (just like in Superbad).
Had they said this was Superbad 2 and that Molly was supposed to be Seth's younger sister (just like Beanie Feldstein IS Jonnah Hill's sister in real life) I wouldn't even find it weird.

The film feels very derivative of Superbad (and this isn’t helped by the fact its lead actress is Jonah Hill’s sister). It’s also nowhere near as funny as Superbad (as many as half the jokes fell flat in the packed cinema I saw it in) though to my mind, its more emotional and dramatic scenes work better than Superbad’s.
I would recommend it to fans of the coming-of-age genre, but I certainly wouldn’t describe it as a must-see, unlike Lady Bird. Overall, it’s a sound addition to the genre, though it’s been heavily overpraised by critics. 6.5/10.

Movie was funny, and good where it needed to be, YET. Gender Neutral/Feminist/White male hating/PC culture bullshit was mind numbing, and forced down the throats of the audience. The movies portrayal of high school was riddled with cliches, and felt like a fantasy world. So many shots in this movie consisted of loud, hipster music played over someone doing something in slow motion. 5/10 at best, want a movie to be loved by the masses?
