That is Earl Scruggs at the prime of his life. Making it look so easy. Just hear the tone coming from that banjo. All those picker in The Foggy MT. Boys are top notch. And Lester Flatt's voice is superb.
Lester, Earl and the boys are playing in Heaven tonight. I know Heaven is perfect, but I think the music there must be a little sweeter now. Thanks boys, we miss you all. Jim
Uncle Josh gets a stunningly beautiful sound playing "Home Sweet Home". I don't care how many majestic eagles are flying in the sky, no one is the FINE & top-notch dobro player Uncle Josh was.
The finest Bluegrass Combo that ever existed .. in all of God's Creation. Thank whoever you want to .. but SOMEBODY or SOMETHING sure needs the gratitude sent their way .. for the fact that there are now 10 .. yes, 10 .. x 60 min. volumes of this wonderful band's Martha White Grand Ole Opry TV-Show Performances from the 50s & 60s available for us to buy for our own, on the Shenachie label.
Flatts and Scruggs ...... Nothing reminds me of dad more ...... Bluegrass music is one of my loves in life next to extremely fast or slow music Bluegrass is always there's to remind u your just a lost boy in the woods of the unknown
Cousin Jake: What a voice!! I have listened (many times) to everything I can find where he is singing or harmonising. I would have been very happy just to hear him order a coffee or a beer. Pretty slick bass player as well. regards from Australia
I love bluegrass. I was raised on it. My dad's family all played bluegrass, and my mom's family always. I think Flatt and Scruggs were the best of the best. Every bluegrass musician wants to be like them.
You know, a lot of 5 string banjo players can play super fast. But Earl proved on some of his slow pieces, like Home Sweet Home, that fast is not always best. I think he is tops on this.
This was on their Grand Ole Opry show sponsored by Martha White. All of these shows are on DVD and can be purchased online. A lot of the videos you see on youtube of Lester and Earl are from these DVDs.
This music is our( americas) heritage , from the carters connecting straight back to the 1800s at least just no way to record yet, just as good w or w out electricity, natural raw talent! American country music is the ORIGINAL BLUES of the world ! Everyone else simply copied there own version of it, english or african , thats where it all came from ! it all started right there in the mountains, then spread up north then out west
R.I.P. Earl Scruggs. I really, really wanted to meet you. You're the reason I play the banjo. I love your style and all you pickin'. I played harder and faster today than ever before and I was thinkin' about you at the time. Then later I heard you were called home. Guess I'll meet you up younder. The angles will be trading in their harps for fiddles, mandolins and guitars now so they can join you in a breakdown. My condolences to the Scruggs family.
@pegcage You know, that is about the smoothest 5 string banjo pickin' I've ever heard. And Home Sweet Home was pretty too. Mr. Scruggs, my hat is off to you.
@CARROLLCTYDOBROGIRL : I'm with you !! Hey, your comments are great. CONGRATS !! You're getting quite a reputation, I think, around the traps on YT blugrass channels, for your most enlightening & mega-enthusiastic contributions .. especially concerning Lester, Earl & those fabulous Foggy Mountain Boys. P.S. - I ain't gay or nothin .. so don't get me wrong .. but you're dead-right .. Josh & his life-long good buddy Jake were both v. handsome men.
@barbestervig I thought he was hammering on the third fret of the first string but it's the second fret. The tuning is open G with the fourth string tuned down a full note. Overall might be a touch sharp. Hard song to learn as there are a lot of beats per minute thrown in there.... I had to slow down an MP3 to about 10% to hear some of the notes.
Justa Drumbum Yes he did smile at times. Check out the video Whoa Mule Whoa. Paul is playing Earl's banjo claw hammer style and singing. Earl is playing the guitar. They are having to much fun on that song. I have never seen the mandolin player smile. Earl was a established guitar picker too. Love these old clips! They were the best.
Interesting that they picked all tree songs so Earl could play Home Sweet Home in his normal partial C tuning without having to stop and tune. Also interesting that he didn’t HAVE to tune through all 3 songs.
Does anyone know the tuning Earl is using on "Ain't GWT" It sounds like C flat.... I'm trying to play it on a G tuned banjo but the sound doesn't correspond to Earl's fingering in the video....
That is the Martha White Theme. It was their sponsor's theme song. It is here in its entirety on you tube. Just search Martha White Theme Flatt and Scruggs. The version you will hear is performed live at Carnegie Hall, when some people yelled from the audience requesting it.
Well, since im not familiar with this american country music I have to come up with one question that is quite important to me. Is this Instrument played by this one guy in the background that looks like a guitar turned sideways actually a guitar or something else? I happen to see this the first time in my life in these videos... and I'm new to music, playing 3 instruments myself... How is this called?
Back when television shows actually showcased great artists doing what they do the best.
Alot of talent in one place these gentlemen were the best sure do miss Uncle Josh.
Great bluegrass band ever JD Crowe said he'd rather hear Earl tune banjo than others play,Earl without a doubt the greatest!!
I mean Earl Scruggs is the Standard for all banjo player out there. Earl was really that man 💪🏽
That is Earl Scruggs at the prime of his life.
Making it look so easy. Just hear the tone coming from that banjo.
All those picker in The Foggy MT. Boys are top notch. And Lester Flatt's voice is superb.
If anyone ever played the banjo better than Earl Scruggs I haven't heard them yet.
My brother plays EXACTLY LIKE HIM! JOHNNY FENLAYSON...WE CUT OUR TEETH ON FLATT & SCRUGGS!
Sonny Osborne is up there with Earl, but I believe he may use a different style
There isnt. Scruggs is it.
There have been many who have come sorta close but... earl is still the gold standard for how the banjo is ment to sound
How about his work with the mike, in and out .....Perfect.
Lester and Earl...the great bluegrass Singer all time
When Josh Graves, the Dobro player came on in 1955, he had Earl teach him the 3 fingered roll that Earl perfected.
Cousin jake voice in this ,just great!
This is America's music at it's roots and at it's very finest.
Lester, Earl and the boys are playing in Heaven tonight. I know Heaven is perfect, but I think the music there must be a little sweeter now. Thanks boys, we miss you all.
Jim
I always love how serene Earl looks while playing
We are so fortunate to have these great videos. My only regret is never seeing this incredible band in person...
Uncle Josh gets a stunningly beautiful sound playing "Home Sweet Home". I don't care how many majestic eagles are flying in the sky, no one is the FINE & top-notch dobro player Uncle Josh was.
The music is the best, I also like the expressions on the faces of these guys, "Nothing to it" a nice touch. thanks for the treat.
JAKE, BEST BACK UP I HAVE EVER HERD. WHAT A TINNER.
They did it all with two microphones, and instruments plugged into nothing!
Love the rakish tilt of the caps on those guys. They know how to wear a proper hat
If the stars were ever in alignment it was then these boys got together. Won't happen again
The Flatt And Scruggs are my favorite bluegrass band.
Me too!
It doesn't get any better than this
The finest Bluegrass Combo that ever existed .. in all of God's Creation. Me too, my Dad was Curly !!
Cousin Jake: What a voice!! I have listened (many times) to everything I can find where he is singing or harmonising. I would have been very happy just to hear him order a coffee or a beer. Pretty slick bass player as well. regards from Australia
I love how he moves that enormous upright bass every time he needs to sing, then moves it back again, all while never missing a beat!
I like jake too from Oz!Australia
I love bluegrass. I was raised on it. My dad's family all played bluegrass, and my mom's family always. I think Flatt and Scruggs were the best of the best. Every bluegrass musician wants to be like them.
Love this. Doc Watson does a great version of Home Sweet Home...... Long live real music
I'm lovin' the hats and how they wear them a little cocked to their right side.
I love earl's facial expressions there frozen neither happy nor sad! just one of the best banjo players ever lived
You know, a lot of 5 string banjo players can play super fast. But Earl proved on some of his slow pieces, like Home Sweet Home, that fast is not always best. I think he is tops on this.
There just isn't anyone better then or now.
Thanks for posting this Mary

It's tabbed in his banjo instruction book. They used to all tune ~1/2 step sharp for a brighter sound.

Great job of archiving some of the true american heroes!
Earl Scruggs still plays Home Sweet Home, now together with todays dobro master Jerry Douglas. It's on JDs album Glide.
Thanks for the upload!
Herd someone’s foot patting the bottom of the mike stand when Josh came in on his first break an again on his second! Listen close you can hear it!
Thank you very much.
The Earls of Leicester do a stellar cover of this tune
There's a whole bunch of interesting variations to Home Sweet Home in this video...great stuff!
@colindominy Amen ! These D.V.D. shows (Flatt & Scruggs) are fantabulous!
@pegcage You know, that is about the smoothest 5 string banjo pickin' I've ever heard. And Home Sweet Home was pretty too. Mr. Scruggs, my hat is off to you.
@Buddawg1960 ... According to the video package, this video footage was taken in November or December of 1961. Incredible, aren't they ?

@CARROLLCTYDOBROGIRL : I'm with you !! Hey, your comments are great. CONGRATS !! I was just thinking that! Fourth string dropped by a tone.
@Buddawg1960 p.s. Great guess on the date !!! Can tell you're a bluegrass buff !
Earl makes it look so easy! How does he do it?
Im not sorry to say, that when theres electricity no more, no more will there be music but Of this kind!
@brelfan...Josh Graves. So interesting to listen to. So attractive to watch.
gee hes good.
I know is that awsome or what?!!!
Ever notice how small Lester Flatts hands are?
@pegcage ummmm...they haz mad skills son
You are speaking of the dobro, played by Josh Graves. Lester called him Uncle Josh.
Did Earl ever smile ? I can't remember a clip where he ever changed his facial expression.lol
Justa Drumbum Yes he did smile at times. Check out the video Whoa Mule Whoa. Paul is playing Earl's banjo claw hammer style and singing. Earl is playing the guitar. THAT JAKE WAS A GREAT TENNER/
Yep,his harmonies drove this song, just the right amount of contrast to the others.
@boblackey1 He is the Master; he also started the 3 finger style with Bill Monroe back in the mid 40's. And he is still touring and playing!
Does anyone know the tuning Earl is using on "Ain't GWT" It sounds like C flat.... I'm trying to play it on a G tuned banjo but the sound doesn't correspond to Earl's fingering in the video....
Whats the name off the first song you only hear the end off?
That is the Martha White Theme. It was their sponsor's theme song. It is here in its entirety on you tube. Just search Martha White Theme Flatt and Scruggs. The version you will hear is performed live at Carnegie Hall, when some people yelled from the audience requesting it.

Mister Gunsen called a dobro
where was recorded this?
The good ole days when musicians knew how to perform live... You only needed to mics.
just got a condensor mic, hoping to get better with it
Any idea what year this is? I'm guessing 1962-63.
Dobro, this is what you call it
Ain't gonna work Tomorrow - The song you sing when you win the lottery
Is that a plastic or skin head Earl has?
Guess when you've been playing for fifty years or so it gets a lot easier.
Some call it a resonator guitar.
Dobro is a brand name owned by Gibson.
