I knew Marty started young, but to be playing with Lester Flatt at 14 is just insane. Marty is still making great music and every time I see him I appreciate that he is a link to some of the true legends of country music.

I was extremely proud to have had Charlie Nixon and his lovely wife stay in my motel in the north Georgia mountains a few years ago. My mother had a Dobro that she played as a young girl. I ask Charlie if he would play it for us, and he gladly spend 3 hours in our living room, playing some of the best sounds I had ever heard, what a treasure trove of memories. I hope he is still around today, and wish I could here him play once more. Thanks for those treasured hours.

It says a lot about Marty's talent that he was a mere lad, so young he sounds like a little boy, so pretty he could have passed for a girl (but for the silly haircut), but these seasoned pros invited him to play with their band, and he kept right up with them. He was remarkable even then. And he just kept on evolving into an even greater musician. Love his later songwriting, too.

Marty joined Lester's group at the invitational of Roland White (brother of guitarist Clarence White). Roland was Lester's mandolin player and Marty took over full-time after Roland left to work with Clarence. That's how Marty got to know Clarence and how he was able to purchase that famous B-bender. It was Clarence's widow who sold it for $1,600 (along with some other items). Marty was willing to pay whatever (even if he had to go to his mother, who worked at a bank, to get a loan), but Clarence's widow said that she knew Marty would respect and care for the guitar, and considering Marty still uses it today, she was spot on.

I can remember being a boy in the 70s in Gordon Alabama...about 20 miles south of Dothan Alabama.
These old shows bring back so many great memories of my grandparents home.
My grandma would have us all over...my uncles, aunts, cousins, & family neighbors...Grandma would always have a big Southern Alabama country supper cooked on a Saturday night & we would sit around her big dining table & eat...then everyone would go to the livingroom & watch Hee-Haw & the show that came on before Hee-Haw which if I remember correctly was The Porter Wagoner Show. Then everyone would eat a dessert homemade cake or pie my WONDERFUL GRANDMOTHER would bake.
FOLKS...THESE ARE REAL MEMORIES OF REAL PEOPLE WHO HELPED SHAPE MY LIFE FOR THE BETTER!!!
I can remember my great grandmother used to say all the time "the older you get the more you go back"...I never really understood what she meant then...BUT NOW THAT I'M 50 YRS OLD, I SURE UNDERSTAND WHAT SHE MEANT NOW!!!
I LOVE THESE MEMORIES OF MY FAMILY...I BELIEVE IF WE DID THIS MORE...THINGS IN THIS OLD WORLD BE SO MUCH BETTER!!!
    Much love from Mobile Alabama.

They're playing an arrangement of "Dueling Banjos" famed from the movie "Deliverence" and usually played as a guitar/banjo duet, but Lester didn't quite have the chops to pull it off (though he was the standard for rhythm guitar). Plus Lester was generous to "showcase" the other members of the band.

'Dueling Banjos" originally written in the 1950s as "Feuding Banjos" by Charlotte, NC based musician, songwriter and local tv star Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith.

2Stroke Diesel Power I've been playing since 1973 with bands all over the east coast and basically I was just having a little fun with Marty lol hes a long time talented performer and a country legend. As for me I played with George benson and Michael Bolton and nee edition years ago
Also worked with jazz saxophonist marion meadows and vicki sue Robinson the original vocalist of the classic dance hit turn the beat around
Also played with daddy and the sax maniacs who performed at bill Clinton's second inauguration
But in reality I was just having a little bit of fun with the great Marty stuart

Thank goodness that Marty's parents were willing to let him go off at such a young age to work with Lester Flats. Many parents would have said "NO way...Marty has school tomorrow!" They did a great & considerate thing for country music when they allowed Marty to play his music.
And you were correct...amazing documentary by Ken Burns
