    Spray paint provides the thinest coat, a paint/epoxy combo box gives a medium coat, and a thick application like BathWorks & Ekopel gives the thickest & best coat. Also, use a 1/4 inch nap roller, not a foam one. Nap is manuf. suggested, it rolls on great, and doesn't break up like foam. Beautiful work! Thanks.

    Prep is everything! I used to build some pretty nice cars and did all of my own body work, detailing and prep work. I would have a friend of mine do the final paint in his spray booth. No one ever commented on my projects, but as soon a Lou spent one evening squirting the car, He got rave reviews. Yeah, it was OK, but I know why he looked good. Do all the prep work you can and you will know who was really the source of a great job. It is even better if you do all phases of your work. Oh, an automotive wax and grease remover could also be a good idea for the final prep wipe-down.

    You did an incredible job and you seem super nice, and I don't want this to sound condescending in any way! But I can predict from experience that this finish will last 12-18 months before it starts chipping away at the edges or around the drain. Plus, you always just have a painted bathtub. If I had a tub like this, with a flawless finish but dated color, I would just pretend that that was my new favorite color and decorate around it. I would have chosen new modern gold fixtures, tiles with some ethnic pattern that included that blue plus some yellows and on-trend hues, some chunky white or cream fabrics, and some luxe wallpaper. Boom, you have a designer fresh bathroom that doesn't look like a fiberglass drop-in unit from Home Depot.

    • @freewaybaby
      @freewaybaby ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your idea is excellent, but…in my case, it’s already a (used to be) white tub, and my guess is, about 70 years old. The bottom part of the tub really has no porcelain finish on it anymore and though I can get it clean, it’s very porous and still not shiny and doesn’t LOOK real clean. I have checked into getting a new tab installed, and it involves taking out the pocket door and removing part of the wall to get the old one out and the new one in. Sometimes the options are just too much. With only one bathroom in the house, It’s not necessarily a money issue as much as it is a time issue, just to have a fully working bathroom. Hopefully there’s a product out there that’s more permanent than 12 to 18 months. I surely can’t see doing this every year or so.

    • @FoamingPussy
      @FoamingPussy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@freewaybaby If the old tub is porcelain or cast iron, smack it with a hammer a few times and carry it out in buckets. If it's fiberglass, cut it up with a reciprocating saw. Removing the old tub is the easiest part. Getting the new one in will be much harder.

Standing water eventually wore the enamel and exposed the steel and it started to rust. Rental company said they wouldn't fix as it was cosmetic. I cleaned then sanded the hell out of it. Used automotive primer 2 coats, then applied 2 coats of semi gloss white enamel. It looked great but took way to long to dry as it was winter when i moved in and had to close off bathroom to vent the fumes. it looks awesome now, total cost `$12 and about 1 hr total work time. i still have to sponge water to drain after i take a shower but a small inconvenience.

Never had a tub last over 2 years when I tried it. Just clean well and make sure it is etched very well. I sand instead of using the chemicals but they do work well. Also I recommend making sure that the paint is anything other than a polyurethane or epoxy. I have had those turn yellow in the past.

    When done correctly this will give you a really good finished result. However, this is a very labor intensive process, as well you will need a lot of ventilation to exhaust the fumes. You will also need a commercial type ventilation mask,as seen in the video. Plan a minimum of a full 48 hours to complete the project. There is a reason this was shot at very high speed video. The time spent on each task should have been provided, as well as the the total hours to complete the project.This would give you a realistic time frame before you attempt to take on this task.

    • @BearMountainBuilds
      @BearMountainBuilds  ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as you don’t go too heavy on the top surface there will not be any unevenness. If you put too much on the top it will flow down the sides and can cause some very slight waves. Overall it self flattens very well

    Don't do it! I was an expert bathtub refinisher. I had my own company for many years. It did this from 1980 until 2015. I charged over $200 to strip bathtubs once they've been painted and were failing. If the surface isn't prepared right and the right material isn't used and it isn't applied with spray equipment it looks terrible it doesn't last and fails and falls apart. Every time. You have to use hydra fluoric acid to etch the bathtub. HF. If you don't handle it right it will kill you. Get a professional. Someone who really knows what they're doing. It's worth the money. Otherwise you're going to have to strip it all off. Paint stripper is highly poisonous. And it will destroy your floors and walls and everything around the bathtub.

      @BearMountainBuilds  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So far mine has been doing great! So we’ll see how long it lasts!

    • @robertlee3
      @robertlee3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BearMountainBuilds It will last about a year. Maybe a little more maybe a little less. Water will get under it and you'll have bubbles and it will start peeling off in chunks and start going down the drain then it's done for. I don't do that stuff anymore. No more bathtub refinishing for me man. It's really really hard on your body. The chemicals just ruin you. But it is lucrative and it's a good business as long as you're really careful with the chemicals. You have to have a supplied air respirator that pumps fresh air from outside to your face and keep it off your skin no solvents, none, they will eat up your liver. I did my shower walls here in my house back in 2001. They still look brand new. If it's done correctly my professional it will last forever.

      I was considering trying this in an older upstairs bathroom but I will definitely take your advice and hire a professional! There are a lot of things we can DIY to save money, but I'm not interested in spending double to fix what sounds like a messy and costly mistake. Not taking the chance! My brother had his professionally done and it is holding up great. Appreciate you taking the time to explain and yes, people do read the comments ;)

      @@robertlee3 I agree. I refinished a shower once in a bathroom that I didnt want to gut and replace the stall. It looked good when I finished but I could tell that it wouldnt take much harsh cleaning chemicals before it stated to look bad. The prep was horrendous. I would have been time and money ahead to just replace the shower. I priced all the products that he uses in this video and it comes up to around $220. You can buy a new cheap tub for around $230 or a complete surround and tub for about $280 and these will last several years.

    As a 25 year professional bathtub refinisher, I can count on one hand the number of DIY bathtub painting jobs I've seen that would pass even the lightest scrutiny. Even the best looking jobs never lasted. They peel in a year, and I add on a $100 charge to take the rest off and start over. Plus, this guy made it TWICE as hard to tile the walls because he painted the tub first. Now that tiler has to be super careful do not damage the fresh bathtub with tools, tile, and grout. But go ahead. Try to diy it. Those kits are a scam that's been around for decades.
