  • Xinjiang, Uyghur Autonomous Region - China's most controversial area
Previous video from rural China➡️ • People Warned Me Not T...
Urumqi, Xinjiang China - I traveled to the far west of China to visit the Uyghur Autonomous Region. This region is all over western media for not so good reasons. But as usual, I am curious to see things with my own eyes. So, i booked a flight to Urumqi, which is the capital of the Xinjiang province in west China. This is by the way also the biggest province in China. According to some comments on my channel, I would not even be allowed to enter, as the region is apparently closed for foreigners. Well, I was able to enter without any problems and soon after I found myself exploring the city center of Urumqi. It was freezing cold there though: Around -20 °C (-4 °F). Join me as we explore around to get to know this region of China, meet local Ughyur Muslims, try local food and see what Xinjiang, China is really like!

Do you believe that , they can't hide the truth from a small youtuber with a camera 😺 , I am not saying there is really a genocide there , but the way you talk , you meant there is nothing happening there , China government ofc will hide these things even if it was small , As a Muslim , I didn't see anyone was fasting in this video , while it was Ramadan , even mosques were closed , so we did not see any one praying , there wasn't any woman wearing hijab , that doesn't look like there are many Muslims there , Judging from a TH-cam video doesn't seem a good decision , You can't believe there is genocide here , but you can't believe either if there is nothing happening, let us don't judge from a TH-cam video , ofc China can hide anything they do not want the world to see perfectly , and again , I am not claiming there is genocide here , I am telling my opinion 😺

Don't you find it strange that the "mosques" had been changed to shops and with security at the entrance? And other mosques are closed and you actually don't get to see Muslims praying in any of these mosques? The mosques were used by the Muslims before the clamp down on Muslims practicing their faith.

I am a Chinese Hui Muslim living in the US for 30 years. As a non Muslim country China has a non spoken Muslim privilege policy. We Chinese Muslims have more privileges than Chinese Han people due to our minority status and cultural background. There are Hui Chinese living in Xinjiang too. I visited Xinjiang in 1991 when I graduated from college to visit fellow college students who studied in my university in Dalian University. Comparing the the western countries China has the best social policies towards minorities especially the Muslims. I am a product and witness of such policies. The United States and the West do not care about the Muslims in Palestine, do not care about their own Muslims, do not care, only care about the Muslims in China, which is nothing more than stirring up national unity within China and inciting internal wars. Creating so-called forced labor is nothing more than besieging the economy of Xinjiang and inciting internal strife. In Xinjiang, some people are wary of those who use cameras because BBC journalists have come here before and made false news such as news about Xinjiang cotton and labor, which has affects on some Xinjiang people's jobs. So they may be curious about you and worried if you are a BBC journalist who tends to harm them again. One of vloggers I followed, who is also a foreigner, had such experience, and his name is 老王在中国 if you wanna check if out yourself. Uyghur people actually enjoy some special treaments cuz they are minority(alomost 99% of Chinese are Han ethnics). The Chinese government also has issued policy to help Xinjiang cuz its economy is not as good as the eastern developed provinces . For example, Uyguur students can get extra marks in the College Extrance Exam and easier to be admitted into good universities. Plus the reason why Xinjiang has more police and armed military is that there were terrorists and extremists who were brainwashed killing Han people a few years ago.Now it is definitely a safe place to visit.

Hui Chinese here. It's funny that many westerners claim they care about muslims, but if you test them with some very basic facts, you'll find how ignorant they can be about real muslim life and culture, not to mention the truth of muslim life in China.
I also an interesting observation about westerners: they love to talk about cultural diversity, but when they encounter it, they usually would say "oh, this is like in another country" as if there can be only one culture and life style in one country. China encourages all ethnic groups to maintain and develop their own cultures. You can also find places in China that is "like in" Russia, Mongolia, Thailand, southeast asia, etc. We are diverse and open. All these cultures can coexist peacefully in China.

I believe in Allah and I love my country, the gov has NEVER NEVER NEVER banned my faith☪. They even set up “green lanes” for Muslim every Friday in my community. Instead, some foreigners are prejudiced.

    Some information about the video:
1:30 The girls at the security check talked in Uyghur to each other, but in Chinese to the translator app.
3:20 The traditional Uyghur script is based on the Perso-Arabic script, a.k.a. the Persian script, so it does look like Arabic. Some Latin-based and Cyrillic-based scripts are/were also used to spell the Uyghur language, especially in former USSR countries.
4:15 The girl selling milktea said 'chai', which is the Uyghur word for tea. (Also the same word in many Asian and Slavic languages.)
5:50 That IS a straw. It's designed thin so you don't get hurt when you are drinking hot liquid.
7:00 You are right, the bread is indeed naan, the same type of food as in other places in Central Asia or South Asia. (Xinjiang is the easternmost part of Central Asia.) It is called nan in Uyghur and nang in Chinese, both from Persian. That's why it is spelled as nang in the English discription there.
10:30 There are many ethnic groups in Xinjiang, not every non-Han Chinese there speaks Uyghur. Or maybe the man speaks Uyghur but cannot read. And he was telling you (through translator app) the snack is cheese made from cow's milk, maybe distinguishing it from sheep milk cheese.
12:57 That building which looks like a mosque IS a mosque. Its name, Erdaoqiao Mosque (دۆڭكۆۋرۈك مەسچىتى or 二道桥清真寺), is written above the main entrance. The place for praying is on the second floor.
26:50 Actually I don't understand Uyghur... But I guess the man was telling you the price for the naan is 6 yuan. The kebab itself is 20 yuan, as he told you in the beginning outside the restaurant. He gave up charging you for the naan since you didn't understand his language.
27:45 Those buns were samosas, the same type of food as in other Central Asian areas.
40:45 The entrance of the mosque is on the left in the yard, with the blue sign saying '清真寺入口' (lit. entrance of the mosque).

For example, they can get extra points in the college entrance examination, and some local governments may build houses for free. Regarding of religions and learning mandarin, the policies are the same as Han people's. Normal people have religious freedom except the cpc members.

As for the mosques they are supposed to be open at prayer time 5 times a day, but in places where there is security issues they will be closed during non prayer times. First prayer is at dawn, second at noon, third at around 3:00 pm, fourth at sunset and last one at around two hours after sunset.

Interestingly, when many vloggers travel to different places in China, they often express the same sigh as in the video: It feels like this is not the China in their impressions, and this is not typical China. This just illustrates the diversity of Chinese society and culture. China is a multi-ethnic country with 56 ethnic groups. Although Han and Han culture are the mainstay, areas where other ethnic groups live together still retain their own characteristics and culture. For example, the Uyghur culture in Xinjiang, the Mongolian culture in Inner Mongolia, the Korean culture in Jilin, and the Dai culture(A little bit like Thailand) in Yunnan.

A lot of Chinese travel to Xinjiang. However, it is just too cold now :)
Xinjiang is quite far away from eastern part of China(around 3000 kilometers). For thoese people in Shandong, Shanghai, Jiangsu, the distance to Korea is 700 kilometers and to Japan is around 1500 kilometers. That's why you don't see many touriest at this moment.
