  • China is not all what we expected and trust me, as a couple of Americans, we certainly had some reservations about trekking through the country without a real plan.

WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of modern-day documentarians, perpetual travelers, and seekers of tall tales.
We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us.
Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. Self-reliance and living a sustainable lifestyle are a must. It's all about managing our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so.
We've lived off the grid for over 10 years now in everything from a Van to RV to a Sailboat. And over time we have learned a lot about renewable energy, creating safe drinking water, and managing our waste.
Our journey is ever-evolving but the mission remains the same: #CultivateCuriosity

This video made my morning for many reasons. I’ve had the good fortune to visit scores of countries around the world including China, and firmly believe that while the architecture, landscape and food may differ, we are all one people with the same hopes, dreams, fears and struggles all living under the same big sky. Our differences are to be celebrated as they add colour to life, and our humanity is to be shared as it is our strength in times of grave distress.
Your video popped up in my feed today and I’m grateful that you shared. As an Indian, I have nothing but respect and fondness for China; and it’s great to see two Americans enthusiastically make their way around the country. When we discard the lenses of geopolitics and prejudice, the world becomes much more accessible and enjoyable. Thank you for showing this and living it. TH-cam tip amounts are peculiar because of the conversion but there’s an 8 for good luck! Best wishes from Dubai 🙌🏼

Not Americans lmao, I lived in the states for a decade, visited more than 50 cities or so, and met some of the worst people. You step on their lawn, they come out and draw their rifle. The local Tmobile stores and convenient stores clerks are working behind bulletproof glass. People get beaten up just because they "stared at people for more then 3 seconds" lol , I had to constantly check if I was being followed by black people when I was walking alone in Chicago or dwontown L.A, it was scary to go out after sunset especially being Asian, it was abserd.

Because chaos is a ladder. Of course not for the normal people, but only the really vey powerful ones are able to climb up the ladder. While the normal people? They become the 'ladder' itself. So the super powers can't help triggering chaos all over the world. They want to be always climbing up something.

That was amazing: one of your best films yet, and it's not just the places (stunning as they are); You guys do travel logs better than absolutely anyone, even on network or cable TV covering not just the attractions but the underlying issues like history, language and culture, plus you do it with zero resouces (whilst they have dozens of camera and sound men, key grips researchers, production assitants etc. ) and because you're paying for stuff yourselves, you keep it real as per time and money, and yet the camerawork, the editing, the sound... absolutely perfect! I hope that, even when you get on your boat and on the ocean, you won't just do beaches and coves, and will still, ocasionally, do more of this stuff because you are just too damn good at it not to!

I'm a passionate admirer of Chinese culture and history. I have learned some about thisand that, but I have clear that there's so much that I need and want to learn and know about China. I have the deep wish and goal set, to visit several provinces/cities, perhaps next year. I love everything about China. Blessed land of good, smart hard working, productive and knowledgeable people, good food, beautiful landscaping, gorgeous music and wonderful musical instruments, fascinating culture and grand history. Hope to be there in a close future. ❤

    Welcome to China :)
I've been here for 10+ years, and despite having travelled as much as I possibly could within the past 10 years and thoroughly tracking my trips. I've only managed to "travel" 30% of China

    • @nl3885

Do you know how much is 30% of China? There are more than 20,000 cities and towns in China, which means you have to visit 600 places. I am now 40 years old and have been to all the provinces in China (minus 4) and estimated less than 10%.

Tenth time watching this and decided to drop my very first comment on TH-cam for the Wynns. Been there with my best friend back in 2015, and your video definitely brought those lovely memories alive. With appealing storytelling, smart integration of local ballad, and spectacular visuals, you guys presented me tranquility and serenity to the utmost. Also huge shoutout to excavating the historical aspects of Lijiang and initiating thought-provoking discussions on the tradeoffs between cultural reservation and sightseeing overexploitation, which most domestic tourists won't bother to care.

I was not your typical US serviceman, I was in the habit of researching where we were going (a little more time consuming in the 1960s) and staying away from the bars and brothels, instead mingling with the locals (as much as we were allowed to) and learning how similar we all are. I wouldn't trade those experiences for anything! Fantastic episode, thank you for letting us tag along!

No one can resist Yunnan; you won't find a place like this anywhere else on the planet. It is a land where tropical rainforests and snow-capped mountains coexist, where coconuts and apples are both cultivated. It boasts priceless sunshine and air, serves as the world's earliest tea-producing region, and is also the newest coffee-producing area. Additionally, Yunnan is home to Asia's largest flower cultivation base and wholesale market, housing half of China's plant species.
Culturally, there are 25 ethnic minorities along with their unique civilizations. Some still preserve pictographic writing systems and matrilineal social customs.
Yunnan even has its own "sea" - a vast and beautiful lake that locals call "Erhai (Er Sea)." And indeed, it is fitting, as every winter, seagulls from Siberia fly here to spend the cold months. They enjoy it so much that they stay longer with each passing year.

I am so thankful that you two native Texans have opened up the vast and beautiful legacy of the Chinese people. I was fortunate enough to have learned from my father, a busy physician and good ol’ boy from east and west Texas, who, in his off time, studied the horticultural practices of a society claiming close inheritance from what nature shows them. Grace, mercy and honor always among their interactions with all of nature and its inhabitants. Of course I said all this without mention of governing bodies, just referring to the simple masses of humans. I haven’t any knowledge of how the Chinese rulers and religion fit into their respect for what nature displays to them. At any rate it is high time more people become aware of their significant contributions 😢to our world knowledge.

This Vlog spaced me out by the title of : Americans in China. I just wonder who they are, and what they saw and felt about China, my dear homeland. It's because currently all issues mentioned in most public media are mainly on the negative. The two male and female alternating commentators initially gave me a benign and pleasant impression and inspired me to read on. Then I discovered they were no ordinary people as they portrayed what they saw in China in a very profound, artistic and gratefully friendly manner. I raised my hat to them! I can tell they see every bit of the scenery in China with their hearts, and good consciousness, not just their eyes. I appreciate their time, mindfulness and effort in making such an outstanding video after the trip. The music in the video is beautiful and their comments are so encouraging. Last but not least, the video has brought together so many astounding viewers who write out numerous heart-bottom admirable comments. Great work guys! You have won my heart!

The song that the guy was singing is called “追梦人” or “zhui meng ren”, which literally means dream chaser. The song was dedicated to a Chinese/Taiwanese female writer called Sanmao “三毛”,who was the first ever Chinese woman to live in the Sahara desert with her Spanish husband Jose during the 70s. She passed away in 1991, some says it’s her husband’s tragic death that led to her mental issues which eventually led to her death. She in a true hero in Chinese literature.

I was in Lijijang Ancient Town a few years ago. Absolutely gorgeous. But China has way more to explore both ancient and futuristic. Ancient towns, archaeological sites like Terra Cotta Army in Xi’an, Great Wall, Grand Canal (Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal started during the Sui Dynasty of China), the oldest man-made irrigation system Dujiangyan, Longmen Grotto in Luoyang, Dunguang Mogao Grotto, Hexi Corridor made by Han Wudi of the Han Dynasty that marked the start of the Silk Road that connected trade with the Roman Empire, and modern marvels like Three Gorges Dam, Canton Tower and its night River cruise on the Pearl River in Guangzhou, Pearl Tower and its night cruise on the Huangpu River in Shanghai, Harbin Ice City for the winter, etc. Endless ancient and modern architectural marvels. This is why China only comes after Italy in having the most UNESCO Heritage sites. Happy traveling. I miss Yunnan and Lijiang Ancient Town 麗江古城,with its Tiger Leaping Gorge, the snow mountain, etc.

I hiked Tiger Leaping Gorge in the summer of 2003 when I was backpacking around China by myself. Can’t believe that was 20 years ago! It was one of the sketchiest experiences of my life, but so worth it! After hiking for hours, I took a tiny little boat/raft from one side of the raging gorge to the other. We had to squat down so we didn’t throw off the balance of the raft! I had met a very friendly Chinese couple in Lijiang who ended up doing the hike with me. What an incredible/thrilling experience that I’ll never forget!
