      I feel like george lucas's meddling came from the fact that after the original 77 was shown in theatres, literally everyone called him a movie god, and that went to his head. the original 77 was a heavily controlled and edited movie that - in its raw form, purportedly resembled the prequels in a scarily similar fashion. The studio and its advisers saved the movie from going the way of the hour long political talks, but they gave lucas a blank check after the first one went big, and it seems he got so wrapped up in himself that he neglected to remember that the original movie, the one released in 77, where han shot first, jabba was a fat guy, no womp rats ran through the shot, and coutless other little things made it an amazing movie.

      The Special Edition's were essentially his fan edit, which is fine if he wants to make one, hell some people actually prefer them over the originals if you can believe that, but once he decides "this is Star Wars now" it becomes something entirely different.

    • @jaeman8
      @jaeman8 7 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen Agreed bro! Original or despecialized if you will, will always be the Canon version for me. The only change that I think improved the originals was the end music in return of the jedi instead of yub nub. But if that awesome change means sitting threw that dumb ass alien song in the start of the movie then fuck that lol.

      Show some fucking respect. George Lucas is the creator of Star Wars and as much as you and I dislike some of the Special Edition alterations he made, he is not obligated to cater to the demands of entitled fans who feel that they deserve anything from him or his work. Without him you wouldn't have Star Wars at all, so just be thankful for what you have, even if you don't like it. And on a side note, The Force Awakens is not that great of a film and it is almost entirely dependent on George Lucas' ideas used in A New Hope. At least the prequel trilogy was original.

      Strong are they with the dark side of the force, hmm?

      nation, tribe, race, people, birth. Commonly meaning a collection of people with agreed upon culture, politics, race and religion set apart from other nations.
      I believe what you described was the exact opposite of what Nation actually means. Especially the 'have' part which suggests being forced, and of course why in the world would you care about people who don't care about themselves exactly ? How odd.

    • @annaclarafenyo8185
      @annaclarafenyo8185 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @C man Man It's not illegal to do anything you want with media you own. What is illegal is public distribution of a copy to someone who doesn't also own the same media. There is nothing illegal going on here, except the downloading, and it's not a crime of the creator.
      Regardless, these laws are obsolete, and must be actively ignored and resisted, until they are repealed, and authors are rewarded by a different mechanism than copyright. Copyright serves only to enrich publishers, who serve no useful function anymore.

      @C man Man I saw it, I don't see the relevance. I am impressed with all fan edits, and I despise copyright law, as it is simply a way to make publishers rich, it fails to reward artists. A better system is possible, where work is assigned percentages of authorship, and automatic payments accrue to those authors when the work is downloaded or viewed by a third party, but this is incompatible with capitalism.

      Thinks that made my eyes open so wide that my eye balls nearly popped out:
      - removal of big stupid dinosaur
      - only Han shooting
      - ridiculously saturated colours (magenta skin and fake looking R2-D2 & C-3PO in the desert)
      - up-scaling standard definition footage to 1080p
      - grain removal from negative scans (I actually do that in Photoshop with old pictures, literally the most satisfying thing you could do on a PC)

The amount of work that went into these things is truly praiseworthy. @Főfasírozó Well why don't you just call us all geeks and nerds and be done with it?
      For technical reasons: as shown here, the color temp difference between the two versions is striking. It reminds me of movies that were first put out on dvd and then blue ray that looked like crap, and people screamed for them to be redone.
      2nd thing is I can't think of any other movie that has been 'remastered' as much as star wars has. Some CG effects help, but a lot just outright clutter the screen.
      Then there's remaking key moments, the 'han shot first' debacle.
      I know my trying to explain this is pointless, for most people, they either care, or they don't.

  • @pseudodonn7478
    @pseudodonn7478 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The task and the attention to detail in undertaking this project is remarkable! I was clapping and on the verge of tears until about... 6:17 In it, I see that there is an actual attempt to have the films completely restored without any corrections. I am wondering if anyone has a middle ground to what some good of the special editions did, like extending that hallway. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to see Jabba, I want that cantina full of the original characters, and I don't want to see all that cgi fluff of the space port, but fix the lightsabers so they're on par in quality next to the later movies and the prequel trilogy. That I'd be okay with. Still, I respect the extremes that fans have gone to have this masterpiece restored while keeping it's original flaws. If George hadn't been so obsessed about practically remaking the film in cgi, maybe we would've got a more definitive version of the movies instead of all the fantastic fan edits and the clunky and equally flawed for different reasons BluRay release.

    • @rowdyromero
      @rowdyromero 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @maniakaz
      @maniakaz 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rowdy Romero According to Wikipedia which we know is always right :) - 20th Century Fox still retains the distribution rights to the first two Star Wars trilogies, owning permanent rights for the original film Episode IV: A New Hope, while holding the rights to Episodes I-III, V, and VI until May 2020

    • @rowdyromero
      @rowdyromero 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, that's even better, because 20th Century Fox would try to get the most from those rights and release more editions of the original trilogy to get more money from the fans. Let's hope that one of those editions will be the original untouched edition (with a probable release date close to 2020).
      Anyway, I have the original untouched trilogy in vhs, the special edition in vhs and dvd and the latest bluray editions. I got this despecialized edition and admired it end to end. Is an impecable work, far superior than the blu-ray edition.

    Incredible. The fact that the unaltered versions are being Digitally Graded is amazing in itself, and as expected a lot of hard work to get the footage from the original, but the fact that fans are behind it is something really special, and a true testament to how dedicated fans really are. George may not like the idea of going back to original form because of the continuity, but most fans are only interested in the original trilogy anyway. Seeing this has made me believe that the trilogy was well treated with these peoples capable hands and we thank you. Now if only we could make it official...

    Why isn't there a version that leaves the good changes in like the death star battle and the bad changes out like the magenta colors and greedo shooting first. I think the special editions did make certain things look better. (like the one i mentioned, the death star battle) Also, changes like 5:33 (escape pod color) and 4:00 (the speeder shade) and 9:16 (the people in the hall) 9:22 (the dewback) were unnecesary to change back. All of those look better than the original one. I'm a BIG Star Wars fan, but i can see that some things did get better.

    I worked at Reliance MediaWorks back in early 2012 when their cleanup team was doing a cleanup of scans of the original trilogy pre-special edition. Lucas had every intention on releasing a cleaned up Blu-Ray version of the original trilogy as it had been released on film, but once Disney bought Lucasfilms, it was all shelved. So there is a remastered version of Episode IV out there somewhere. They made a lot of progress on Episode V and even touched Episode VI, but it seems the house of mouse has no plans on releasing an original HD version of these movies any time soon.
