The Benefits of Living Alone on a Mountain (2014)

  • Although fire lookouts continue to be critical front-line components of our forest system’s battle to detect and prevent wildfires, their roles often times go unnoticed, due largely to both the manual nature of the work involved and the quiet, extremely solitary nature of the working environment. Leif Haugen is a fire lookout in a remote corner of the Flathead National Forest in northwestern Montana, and each summer he lives and works alone on top of a mountain three miles from the Canadian border. A simple, somewhat primitive one-room structure serves as both his home and office; however, what it may lack in amenities (neither electricity nor running water are available) is more than compensated for by the majestic, 360-degree views of the world that his perch provides. With only a remote radio to keep him connected to the outside world, Leif’s primary responsibility is to scan the valley floor for any signs of destructive fire activity - one which calls for enduring long stretches of tedium and an eagle’s eye and quick response the moment fire is spotted or lighting strikes in the distance. There are approximately 500 active lookouts currently operating in some of the most rugged and desolate outposts of the American West. The Lookout captures both the critical nature of one fire lookout's work as well as the life of quiet, contemplative solitude which accompanies his job.

My Dad supported himself through college and grad school doing this for the Forest Service during the weekends and full time in the summer. My sister was a lookout for a full year after she got her undergrad degree.
If you want to do it, you 1st get on with the forest service, and then you get into the fire prevention branch. Better if you have a college degree for the forest service, unless you want to intern for a while. Since it's a federal job, it is a process.
One of my best friends has been a forest service archaeologist for 11 years.
It's good work if you can get it.

Joe, are you kidding me. Paying to stay in a log cabin that has none of the amenities and paying up to 80$.
I guess this guy is at least getting paid to perform these tasks. Sure, the environment is splendid but I guess little people would stay much longer then a day as a lot of people seem unable to survive without their dumb phone in their immediate reach to see the stupid messages on other peoples facebook accounts. I guess torture for some of these youngsters would be depriving them of their cell phone. Solitary confinement even in a beautifull environment would not be appealing to many of these people. I guess those of us who can see the beauty of this place are still in touch with there souls. Unfortunately this is a very tiny group. Good luck to all of you

I hear loud exhaust, racing cars, constant Sirens from emergencies, banging doors, barking dogs and alarms, and the dreaded horn from the car from all these alarms they are very annoying I would be very happy if those horns that go off when you set your alarm be outlawed. I have neighbors that set their alarm multiple times a day like we live in a bad neighborhood or something it's very annoying.

Yea! It didn't take too long to read a few comments, and these too were like my own: very positive! I must admit, I would have to have my computer with me, there atop the Mountains, as this is always my Way to the world. I would love to be there, and actually have no problems with being alone; often prefer it.
The night skies were amazing there, and this would be something to have the ability to see that clearly. In 2015, I thought this was in North America, nothing that could ever again be studied. Amazing!

Well done. A glimpse into the past before we relied on technology more than ourselves. I really enjoyed this having spent years as a pilot in firefighting and dealing a lot with lookouts. This film told a story, set a mood, and delivered dramatic footage. Two thumbs up.

Leif, I too am employed as a fire prevention officer. I live in semi-tropical eastern Australia. I live alone near the headwaters of a small river. My job is to manage the forest fuel overload. I make compost and mulch and other items from the organic waste stream. I love living by myself, and I love manicuring the forest, cutting back excessive vines, deadwood, palm and tree fern fronds when they have died. Sometimes the scenery is so obstructed with bark, fronds, sicks and vines that nothing can be seen, and it looks rank and untidy. After clearing the dead stuff out, there are often striking scenes that emerge. Beautiful little glimpses of the creek and distant ridges. It is like being a painter creating living landscapes.
I was wondering if you had much air traffic near your little outpost. It would be a great place to observe such things. I live under a busy jet corridor, and do daily observations and take many photos of morphing con trails. I ask because I saw traces of decomposing contrails in the background of some of your shots.

Yes, in making a comment on this video about living in a van , that I've seen here on youtube , I would like to say that I have been in a van , a 91 GMC van for approximately two years now and I love it . I once lived on Beach Boulevard property for like 34 years , I sold my home, I didn't lose it, but after going through a divorce 14 years ago I had to start all over again and a van is like a steel tent on wheels, I have an inverter here, I joined the gym so a gym that I can go to 24 hours around the clock so showers and getting cleaned up and tending on to health needs have not been a problem and even before then down here in Long Beach , Mississippi you can park on the beach enjoy the beach everyday, which I do I'm usually six or seven days a week out in the Gulf of Mexico on an inner tube , enjoying the Sun and the water and if I want to take a shower without going to the gym there are free showers here on the beach and there are eating establishments across the street from the beach, a service station, Waffle House, and seafood restaurants , it is really nice down here on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi and so anyway folks living in the van isn't that bad after all , see now I can live on the beach and not have to pay taxes, but when living on the beach for 34 years in the house, taxes had to be paid , so it does have its advantages and it grieves me when I hear some men's wives on some of these videos make a statement that they had told their husbands that they would divorce them before living in the trailer or probably even more so they would if living in a van, my response to that is I think you're a bit spoiled like most Americans are with all the conveniences and luxuries of life that we've been blessed with for many years and I think that everybody needs to get a different mindset and get ready for hard times because hard times are not only here but we're getting ready to face nuclear war under this president that we're under right now, the Bible does not lie , and it lets me know Americas going to be hit by nuclear bombs folks, and once an Ahab takes control over any nation just read what judgement fell on the land when Jezebel and Ahab we're in control, what when you have a Supreme Court that's in agreement to legislate that which is an abomination in the sight of God , you can look for problems and the problems are here and they're only going to get intense so America look to lose more homes and so you need to start getting ready cuz you're not going to be in your home much longer, even get a tent, even though I've got the van I've even got a tent because of something ever happens to the van I'll at least have a tent over my head and God wants us to be thankful no matter what providence brings our way because this is not our home anyway we've got a better home waiting for in heaven, thank you Jesus, Amen. That sounds like hard work, almost like you are trying to convince yourself, and us that you are happy living in a van. How do you wash your clothes? will restaurants even let you through the door looking like a bum? What do you do for money to buy meth, gas and food? I'm not being clever I really am curious.

I remember in the early 60s climbing a fire tower that was no longer in use. It was on the Gould City Road in the U.P. of Michigan not too far from our cabin. I used to wonder who had worked there and wished for a job like that. My favorite phrase from the video was "Keeping it simple".
