    Cool video. I have been watching your progress on this CAT for the last few months and I am impressed with your technical knowledge, your mechanical skills, but most of all, your ingenuity in solving a host of problems , not the least of which is you are a 'one man band' on a project that could use another set of hands as a minimum and more equipment to handle these heavy components. I plan to follow this project to completion and I am looking forward to your excavator project. Thanks for bringing us along on these projects.

    You could "weld a nut" to the dent in the fuel tank and use a slide-hammer to pull it out - but I wouldn't bother trying to fix every dent and blemish. Good luck.

    Love watching you do this with basically no experience , but you do have great mechanical aptitude and the willingness to tackle the job 👍 I have many years as an industrial mechanic . I am now disabled and you help keep my nose in the business as I had to repair everything on my own . Maybe an occasional helper . All was included , the sand and gravel plants , the heavy equipment , the trucks etc. I enjoyed the comment on playing the lottery if it holds lol . Keep in mind....
    Heat kills ! The radiator may hold but give low flow . Heat kills ! You put a lot into this good Ole dozer to skimp on the cooling system and you are right there . Doesn't matter if you you use it for an hour or a day.... same heat . Heat kills . Think about it . Can't wait for the next video . Thanks you are doing a great job .

    The best thing to do and I've done it to fuel tanks is clean it really good till you can't smell any diesel fumes the cut the back panel off at the welds with a grider and you can then beat the bent in area back to where it should be and give the interior an in depth cleaning and then weld it back together and use a wand to paint the interior with the proper sealant after you've primed it.
    It's a little time consuming but we'll worth the effort.
    I grew up in a small Michigan farm town and one of my teen buddies had me help him do it on one of his dad's tractors.
    A Bull had actually kicked it in when the tractor backfired behind it.
    What the Bull was doing there remains a mystery to this day.
    He was a mean sob but a good breeder so they just improved the gate to his fenced off area where they kept him separated.

    If it was my restoration project, especially being a radiator cooling core, I would dismantle the whole system, because what is hiding under and above the cooling core could be something that really needs attention now before you reassemble the dozer and start using it. Because the hidden rust, dirt, gunk etc. may cause the core to begin to leak just when you need the dozer the most. For me, now is the time to see what is good and what needs replacing or repairing, not after the restoration has been completed and I am ready to put the D 2 to work.

    I'm glad you got lucky with the fuel tank - it was about time for a little good luck - you deserve it. Reminds me of a truck I was restoring once - I pressure washed the underside to make a start at cleaning it up. A bit later, I smelled diesel fuel strongly. Got under it and looked - the pressure washer had dislodged some rust that was keeping the tank from leaking!

    I restore old motorcycles now & then. The fuel tanks are almost always a mess. After years of playing with all the options I now just get it cleaned out as well as is reasonable, then use a product called Red-Kote. It takes into suspension anything still in the tank, seals 100%, and is indestructible. I spilled a small puddle about 3 inches wide in the middle of a heavy traffic area on my garage floor. Many years later it still looks untouched. I believe it would take a hammer & chisel to bother it. It adheres to everything. It has the consistency of molasses. I think if you could take the steel tank off it somehow the remaining Red-Kote bag would make a good tank. I've tried damaging that puddle with various chemicals from muriatic acids, carb cleaners, oven cleaners, you name it. The stuff is boss. It seals leaks from pinholes & seams 100%. I coat twice just because. I won't use anything else ever again. I have no money in their game, just a high recommendation.

    A good way to get the big dents out next time would be to try using air pressure. Just seal the tank and put a small amount of air pressure and most of the time the dents will pop out. If they don't stay popped out keep pressure in the tank and then use a hammer to release the dent by tapping on the ridges of the dent. Tank looks great either way, nice video.

      @walterwhitaker1395 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes you can do that with air pressure but you can increase the force by filling the tank full of water then adding air its called hydrostatic pressure induction. Fluid is non compressible you now have a hydraulic boosted source. We test
      Test high pressure steam piping and boilers with this technique.

All you really need to do is grab a paper clip straighten out one end and heat it up with a lighter and burn a hole through the nail, it's so much easier and less painful.
