Over the last week I have extensively tested the new Apple Watch Ultra for its sports and health tracking performance. And in this video we will take a comprehensive look at the heart rate accuracy, sleep tracking performance, skin temperature measurements, GPS tracking, oxygen saturation measurements and step counting accuracy of this brand new watch from Apple. In this video I will focus on independent and unbiased performance testing of this top of the line Apple Watch.
Overall I am really happy with the performance of the Apple Watch Ultra. It has the same amazing heart rate tracking that all Apple Watches have, though in this case the increased weight might influence the accuracy during more vigorous exercise. The sleep tracking is really good, and Apple really really seems to have the best sleep tracking out there at the moment. The only problem with the sleep tracking is that when you sleep outside of the window you indicate, it might not track your sleep. Unfortunately I never nap, so I have not been able to test what happens myself. However, people have left comments about having issues with this in my other videos. The GPS tracking also appears to be really solid, and at least a bit better than the other Apple Watches. The temperature sensor gave a good first impression, though I really want to know if it can detect large changes in temperature as well. The SpO2 tracking seems pretty reliable, though more testing is needed in a low oxygen environment. And the step counting is also quite accurate, and it does not count too many steps when it is not supposed to, which is really good.
Based on this testing I can say that the Apple Watch Ultra would be one of my first choices as an all-round health and fitness tracker. Especially given the better battery life compared to the normal Apple Watch Series 8. However, that is only true if money is no concern. I do not think it is worth it for most people to spend 800 dollars or more on the Apple Watch Ultra. You will get the most important functionalities for a fraction of the price with the new 2022 Apple Watch SE, as I showed you in a recent video. So, for most people this is the Apple Watch I would recommend.

I wonder if gets enhanced outdoor cycling tracking, if not, what would you recommend for that type of sport in the same budget of a Xiaomi band or a bit higher?

Thanks for the in-depth review. While the run data is lacking, there are plenty of reviewers who have done extensive testing with running. From their testing, the weight and size of the AWU places greater emphasis on getting a proper fit to maintain accuracy. With some fine-tuning to get the proper fit, the AWU tracks heart rate closely with a chest strap.

Amazing videos! I get so much info about the devices, but also learn a ton about various scientific process aspects as well. One personal opinion, while the star rating is cool as an opinion/recommendation aspect, I would have preferred to see the watch comparison chart for GPS, Step counting and SP02 vs other devices. That to me is the most important "rating". Thanks for all your hard work!

A suggestion- for GPS testing, accurately measure a few courses- open skies, downtown, etc.- of 1 KM and then do 10 trials on each course to measure the accuracy (average distance) and the precision (standard deviation) of each watch. You can see some of my old videos as an example.

Absolutely brilliant review, been checking back every day to see if you had posted this. Makes me feel good about my decision to buy the Ultra. Just one thing is bugging me big time. I wear the Whoop 4 as well but always have a very big difference between the Whoop and the Ultra with regard to the sleep stages. Question is, is the Ultra significantly more accurate and reliable? If yes, I’m going to give up the Whoop 4.

  • @AlbiBx
    @AlbiBx ปีที่แล้ว +3

Let me say thank you for these videos. They’re very accurate and have shaped my decisions in buying the Apple Watch Ultra.
I wanted to see for myself how accurate the HR for Apple Watch ultra was compared to the polar 10 chest strap so I did the test myself during a CrossFit workout and even though there is a very small delay with the Ultra the results were almost identical. It’s amazing how accurate it is I didn’t think it would be so precise. Props to Apple for dominating this field.
P.s. I was worried that the weight of the Ultra would cause issues with the accuracy but from what I saw it didn’t whatsoever . I used it with the Ocean Band and I made sure it was fitted tight.

I love this scientific test! Although not too happy about the run test result, I know it was on one test, but still. It is running I would primarily use the watch for, currently using a S4 which is quite unreliable with heart rate, it tends to show a static and too low heart rate during some of the first few, but someone more, KM, and then seemingly starts to work properly. Not sure why this is, I feel like the band is snug and sensors it’s clean, but I’m hoping a new watch with upgraded sensors could solve this. During walks it seems to work perfect.

Hi Rob, there is one more thing I would like to see in your reviews. Can you mention about the maximum frequency of measurement of health metrics in continuous tracking mode (7/24) ? How frequent can the device measure metrics like heart rate, blood oxygen, temperature, etc ? Usually this info is not given by the manufacturer and we only find it out after we buy and when we start using the device and its app.

I can say that on my S6 when I do a workout it can measure an HR value every 0.4ms
      Like I have a measurement at 15:10.05 then one at 15:10.09; 15:10.14; 15:10.17; 15:10.24; 15:10.27; 15:10.33
So it can fluctuate between 4ms and 6ms
A bit later it even added a value after only 1ms (15:10.45 then at 15:10.46)

Hello Rob, I find your reviews super interesting. I am however very interested in something you don't seem to include which is "real world applied metrics". For instance: I did a workout: Spinning, HIIT, Weights, and Spinning again with cooldown in one recording on the Apple Watch Ultra and Fitbit Versa(1) which do not match visually on the graphs. And the graph of the Apple Watch is more accurate / consistent, but the overall Calories burned and Summary of workout match regardless. Heart rate, Calories, time, etc all within a 1-2 margin of error.
What this says to me is that the deviations that we see here, while VERY useful and quite amazing for comparisons between different wearables, when it comes down to everyday use, the practical application of said data, usually lines up in the end.
So the real question I have for reviewers is how important is it for the graphs of heart rates to match the polar H10 strap if their software algorithms are rounding the difference and the margin of error in overall results is pretty much the same for (from my experience) Fitbit, Garmin, and the Apple Watches of the world?
This real world application would be so helpful to see!

Great review! Can I ask a question? To measure HRV, did you use mindfulness app of the watch, during sleep or you activated AF in the iPhone in order to activate more frequente HRV readings? Many thanks

your channel is the purchase basis if I want to buy a new sports watch. Well done, keep it up.
Is there actually another test about the Forerunner 255? In a video I saw the Forerunner 255 in the ranking, but I couldn't find a video.

Thanks for the great review! I’ve been on several runs with my ultra and I think I’m getting higher HR readings too. I didn’t watch the readings closely during the run but there was a significant drop in my VO2 max after my first run with the ultra. Previously I had S7 aluminum and I’m expecting you’re right that this comes down to the weight of the Watch. Hopefully Apple will have a lighter weight option available for the ultra in the future.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I tried the Ultra at the Apple store and it's too big for my wrist. I'm also hoping for a smaller version that can accommodate smaller wrists. I don't mind smaller screen and slightly less battery if they can pull off the same performances.

Great tests. My apple watch ultra is great but there is one measure I have concerns with. It’s elevation. It fluctuates a lot while being in the same spot (which is my second floor flat). I wonder if it is normal for the Watch or is this some bug. Would be great if elevation accuracy measure would also be included in your tests.

Hi. I've really enjoyed watching your videos and am seriously impressed at your dedication in your reviews. My question is, with the Apple Watches you seem to always get the GPS model watches rather than the GPS+cellular models. It seems like there's maybe only 3 cellular carriers in Austria that support Apple Watch so that's totally understandable. But, in this case you couldn't have gotten an Apple Watch Ultra that didn't have cellular connectivity. Do you think this variable could be factoring into why the Ultra scored lower in your testing than the Apple Watch 8 or SE? Thanks for all you do!

Great review, when you are comparing the Apple Ulta with the HR polar is the Ultra just on it's own on your wrist and what device is connected to the HR Polar? Thanks.I train on race stand up paddle boards and was wondering if this would be a good watch for paddling and Monitoring your hear rate without a chest strap.
