Janine Jansen plays Britten's violin concerto spectacularly. Can't stop listening to it. One of my favourite pieces.

Britten was an endlessly inventive composer and, for those who don't know this concerto, that's made clear right from the start. What's also made clear is the magical chemistry between Jaarvi and Janine. The wonderful orchestra and the soloist listen to each other all the time and the overall effect is mesmerising. Janine Jansen belongs in the first rank of her generation of violinists. I stagger to think what she still has to offer. Thank you so much to Classical Vault for allowing us to hear this wonderful performance.

I came to this piece after just watching the eponymous documentary on Janine. Judging from your comment, it would be a travesty if you haven't seen it: th-cam.com/video/i6TAz9b_JNA/w-d-xo.html. It's quite an extraordinary film on any terms. This is the first Britten I've heard. If you have any recommendations of his after the violin concerto I'd love to hear them.

@@withaminutetogo I watched that documentary several years ago. Janine just captured my heart. I didn’t think much of the writer and the interview with Moore theJames Bond actor that was strange. I listen to OP 61 a few times a week. The start of the documentary watching for her to begin and see the music just grab ahold of her was so very moving for me. I don’t think I had ever listened to a soloist violinist before that point. I’m old and mostly bedridden and it opened up a new world for me and I’m so grateful for that. Now I love this music. Jeanine’s chamber music is also something that I also love. She is carried away by the music and interacts with the other musicians by those big beautiful eyes. She is a treasure. I also love Hillary Hahn among others. I’m 73 and this old dog has learned a new Trick. Appreciation for classical music a gift from God.

I never realized that Britten was such a strong melodist. This music reminds me of The Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. How come it is so infrequently played? Probably because it is so difficult. It looks like it pushes the violinist to the limit. Thanks Janine Jansen for a stellar performance

It is so rarely played in part because of the old central european ( i.e.Austro-Germanic ) prejudice that has sadly afflicted them for far too long. They have a very myopic musical appreciation.

@peter feltham. Completely agree. The good news is that things are now changing and composers outside the Germanic sphere (other than the most obvious of course) are at last being heard more frequently but we still have a long way to go. Carl Nielsen, for example, one of my favourites, is at last being recognized as the great symphonic composer that he was.

This goes straight into the heart, this kind of singing on the violin. And the way she is connecting frases and keeping the tension throughout the whole piece, it is so moving…at the end of the piece it is like she climbs up along the e-string into the sky towards heaven where is no limit but complete peace, it is very moving again.

What a treat this work is and how brilliantly played by Janine, Paavo and the stylish Parisians.
This is one of the early works by Britten that got him written off by the mainstream London critics as "a clever clever European Modernist", too like Hindemith, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, or heaven forbid Schoenberg and Berg.
The wanted more Elgar, or if it had to be very contemporary then nothing more radical than Waltons Façade.
However, had they bothered to listen with open ears, they would have also heard the most lyrical near-quotes from the 1st movement of Brahms' violin concerto - study Janine's delicious entry at 4:24, after the typically Britten-esque brass, percussion and pizzicato string gestures. Delicious indeed.
To play with such sustained intensity for 30 min - that is beyond comprehension by average mortals like us - she is a living work of sublime art!
    Love andrea

Jansen played Britten's violin concerto with the New York Philharmonic just last week. Paavo Jarvi conducted. He says that even when she plays with an orchestra, Jansen approaches the music like a chamber musician.
"It is such a wonderful quality," Järvi says, "And it's a rare quality, because very often soloists sort of stand there and do their thing and everybody else has to, basically, accompany. With her, it's always give and take, and it's always flexibility. It's never business as usual." -- NPR Weekend Edition Saturday

A great work. I first heard this performed 45 years ago, with Erich Gruenberg as the soloist. Because of the difficulty of the solo part (Britten even included a simpler version of the harmonics passage in the scherzo in the score), the work was rarely performed until about 10 years ago.

I find that many of the less melodious violin concerti that i dismissed in my youth, i now find riveting when performed by Janine Jansen. She brings such charisma and interpretive artistry to her performances, she draws you in quite like no other. Another example would be the Prokofiev 2nd concerto. I feel, however, that even with her hypnotic charm, i still cannot bring myself to appreciate the Alban Berg. Students of the violin may disagree but i am no longer a student.

such a brilliant composition. not sure i've heard a musician before who has the capability of continually feeding power & emotion into each note and progressively extenuating that dynamic thru the duration of this piece. to even grasp the concept (as a musician) is one thing, but to hear the power of the compositions harmonic value (as Janine Jansen clearly does - as she pulls all possible emotion from each sustained note, only to extend and expand it into the next phrase) as Britten plays with tension & release (I think) represents the ultimate in Composer writing such inventive conceptual harmony only to be matched with such a gifted performer capable of hearing, interpreting and (possibly) expanding the power of Britten's work. sorry for the windy statement but I am in awe of this woman's mastery.

Britten was still young and not fully himself when he wrote that concerto, but we cannot deny him an obvious original melodic genius which turned afterwards in a different way (probably under the influence of operas and human voice?). In other words, the "great" works of Britten must not reject this concerto in the shadow. It is a pure jewel. There is much science, much intuition and much music in that concerto.Note that there is a passagaglia, a form that Britten was to use consistently.

    • @grahamexeter3399
      @grahamexeter3399 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Yes to this being a work where Britten is still finding his voice. But what a voice that's already there, with so much to say worth listening to! So many violin concertos written by older composers don't show anything like the same technical confidence and powerful communicability. .

IN addition, and more technically, I should have added the sense of orchestration. The orchestra is not at all considered as a neutral accompanying instrument, a sort of "super-piaano", if I dare to say so. The choice of tumes and instruments is absolutely essential in that music.

... no hay secretos para Janine con su
violín. Entereza y carácter, nos hablan
de su madurez y su brillo. Ella & Jarvi,
    empatía plena.
    Resultado: versión espléndida ...

I'm not generally a Britten fan but this has captivated me utterly. Surely, one of the greatest late-romantic violin concertos and the performer here is transcendental. I assume this is the revised version, first performed in the UK in the 1950s, by Bronislav Gimpel with the RPO, under Beecham.

Once again, Janine Jansen delivers. She is tops, always so communicative with her ensemble. Props to Paavo Järvi and Orchestre de Paris.

A great piece of music. The first movement reminds me of Miklos Rosza's violin concerto.

I discovered Britten about 45 years ago;,at age 33; he opened for me a long-cherished possibility to compose. To me he is one of the three or four greatest composers of the Twentieth Century, and this one of the great violin concerti of that century, rivaled only by those of Shostakovich, Berg, Bartok (his Second) and maybe Prokoviev (his Second).
