I bought Shortcat's controller to prove him wrong, but now I can't stop winning

- I bought @Shortcat321's Gamecube controller for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to find out what is the best controller for the Nintendo Switch. Shortcat recently made a video stating that the Gamecube controller is best for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and I thought I would test out his theory.
Shortcat thinks the Gamecube controller is best for Mario Kart for two reasons: Motion Glider (Glider Vectoring) and Soft Drifting. I explain both concepts in my video and also touch on the biggest disadvantage of the Gamecube controller for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (which Shortcat also explained): No motion controls = no shake tricks.
Be sure to check out @Shortcat321 original video here:

To all new viewers, welcome! I’m Louis G (pronounced ‘Luigi’) and I hope you enjoy my slightly above average Mario Kart gameplay😂
Hey why does your handle have 403 in it?
I get why ur name is Louis G
Louis G
Loo-ee-G
Oui is yes in French is is pronounced oo-ee
So Loo-ee-G
Louis G

@@bestevil. because LouisG was taken, next choice was LouisG123 as the G and 3 rhyme, but that was also taken!
Thanks for giving it a try! Also it was awesome watching you try to do motion glider on all the gliders. It's definitely not an instant level up to your skills, as you suddenly have to worry about falling out of the glider, and how to not shoot too far to the side. For anyone who has never tried motion glider, it's harder than it looks to control!
The main man himself! You’re spot on, and to be honest, it was probably a level down in skill initially until I got used to it 😂 regardless of whether or not it saves me time, it’s so much fun to do and that’s what this game is all about! So massive thanks to you also for making the original video😊
It is the legend himself!

I prefer australian shortcat

@@bestevil. wait... were the other comments reformulating what you said?
Smash players have sworn by it for over a decade, now it's Mario Kart's turn for the reign of the GC controller
i have to say i never used the shake-tricking and didn't even know it was a thing until a few months ago lmao even with motion controls turned off.
i tried the gc controller out too and i cannot get used to the motion gliding bc of having to switch to the d-pad fast and precisely 😭 i'll stick with the pro, as it works perfectly fine for me
I’ve not used the pro controller to be fair but I imagine I’d love it! In a regular game the motion glider doesn’t save too much time anyway :)
@@LouisG403 oh really, i always thought you were using the pro controller, if you ever mentioned whatever you're using i seem to not have heard it lmao. the pro controller is really good imo, but sometimes you get a wrong-way drift and it's really annoying as it can really mess up your driving 😭 other than that the pro controller is a really good choice
Naw what would be real hell would be the Wii controllers. The constantly wrong drift when playing Mario kart wii, and therefore ruined my boo's boardwalk time trials many times. (My record is 59.873!) (It took so long to get sub 1 min and when I did I haven't touched the track since. 😂
For those who don't like the gcc layout there's also the progcc which lets you convert any switch pro controller into a GameCube controller that still works as a pro controller if you need it to be one
What a stupid project the gcc layout is the best controller layout ever
@@watchf That's entirely subjective, it's good but flawed. As someone with hand issues holding the triggers down to drift is a pain without having to cut the springs or add plugs.
@@NCozy you’re flawed

Always love your videos! Great energy and fun to watch, keep it up Louis G!
Thank you! Glad to hear you made it to the end - didn’t want to give the impression it was all sun and rainbows 😂😂
I'm mainly a PC gamer, but I've played for almost 2 months straight MK8 online on a Switch Lite. I'm stuck around 10K, but when I connected my 8BitDo Ultimate Bluetooth last weekend I was raking in those fucking points and all those techniques seem to make sense! Conclusion: I'm buying a normal Switch this week and I'm gonna experiment with all the different controllers.
Yo d-pad motion gliding works on the 8BitDo? Do all generic USB controllers get d-pad motion gliding?
I assumed it was only original gamecube controllers connected with a certain adapter.
@@diskoBonez as long as it doesn't have a motion sensor any controller should work
There a switch pro controller that is in the game cube controller style I believe it’s corded. It’s on Amazon. I bought it to play Dolphin emulator on PC but I have recently been using it on my OLED to play especially MK8.
the ultimate snipe at 6:28 is very impressive
It was 100% intended, trust me!
Would you ever consider switching controller?
I found it in my local Cex shop and this video is making me consider buying it lmao
I prefer to play games casually and already win 90% of my races. Don't see the point in getting a controller just for a small speed boost
@@Xris10BUL you’ll need to get an adapter too!
@@bestevil. it also takes ages to get used to it, I was definitely way worse in my first few races!
No thanks I'll take the GameCube one
Hot take: Wii U Gamepad (with tilt controls)
Wii U was a really good console though
I'm not sure why, but this was also my preferred controller...
Brother that bit with the smart steering had me dying
All those wins you pulled out was very impressive!! Great job Louis G!! 🤩👏💚
Thanks very much!
@@LouisG403 You're very welcome!!
Wow, this video was amazing!! Well done 😮
Thank you!
Did you do the controller reset thing he said to?
yeah ive always gc controllers for mk8. trick timing needs to precise for certain trick spots as such the first set of stairs on Coconut Mall.
don't know if you noticed but there's a bit of vertical tearing on the recordings
I have a GameCube controller and an adapter I use on my switch, but for Mario Kart, the L and R triggers only register presses all the way in. (It doesn't recognize analog presses and only digital presses) It's very uncomfortable after awhile
Use the Z button
Wow glider vectoring looks so fun!
It is!
Hi, quick question, why dont you use the pond at the beginning of the road to trick?
In time trial, the first lap you want to go around the pond to collect the two coins, then do the trick on laps two and three!
It’s a mii, Mario!😂
Nintendo really made the best controller in 2000 and no one cares
Can you not use the D-Pad to shake trick in a similar way to using it for motion drift?
technically. but because motion controls on it'd also steer him.
Thanks for the red shell tip man.
It’s a risky one because your essentially relying on there being enough lag and a short enough distance between you and the opponent so that the red shell doesn’t target you. But if you need to overtake someone (last lap and they’re trailing a red) sometimes it’s your best bet to try and bait them into throwing the red too early!
@@LouisG403 Duly noted!
Now I need a GameCube controller!
green or red shells do the same damage as a blue btw
which controller did you buy
This video tends to focus on 150cc's gameplay, but I feel that the GameCube's analog triggers would make 200cc worse because of the delay inherent to using them. You want as little hand movement as possible and the bigger the controller the worse it is
Oh my dayz at 1:10 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Jonathan Permutation 😔
this actually sounds like british shortcat but for some reason i hear thomas game docs just like how shortcat is definetely jperm
I need to buy this, i suck at soft drifting and i really want to motion glider
It’s so much fun to do!
Definitely some cons. Might just have to get used to it, like practuce in time trials ir sonethign3
real
@@LouisG403did you reset the controller before this session?
just to put it out there, at a top level the gcn controller isnt optimal simply because of the notches: it's a lot harder to input a precise drift angle when the notch feels like it pulls your stick towards that 45 degree angle. mk8dx isnt like mkw where you wanna hold a perfect 45 degree soft drift, each turn in this game has its own perfect angle to perfectly take the turn, and the gcn controller making that extremely difficult heavily outweighs the benefit of doing motion glider (which only saves around .100 on most gliders lol)
in theory if you modded a normal pro controller to not have a motion sensor, you could do motion glider in normal races with the dpad and have a more optimal control stick. (not getting to shake trick only really impacts bowsers castle, dolphin shoals and i guess sky garden). this would probably be the best method of control but the difference between it and a normal pro controller is negligible
but in lower levels of play, the 45 degree angle on the gcn is probably ideal to just get *decent* softdrifts as most players probably arent capable of using the pro controller's stick to its full capacity anyways
You can reset the controller to set all the coordinates a bit lower
@@knowledgeciaran that... doesnt help
@@sagapz you can tell the difference, I'll link a video where shortcut does it and then starts getting the fast charge speed
@@knowledgeciaran every turn in this game is different, unless you are the worlds smartest person and have a method to change the gcn control sticks coordinates automatically mid race to be perfect for the next turn, i promise you gcn could never be better than pro controller in competitive play
What was the average?
You use the same £3 capture card, the tearing is so noticable, great video regardless though.
What do you watch on, as i see no tearing
i already use gamecube cause i play a lot of ssbm so ost of the time i use it for other games to
Why the hell does Nintendo not just let us do the motion control replacement thing with the Dpad on the Switch controllers?
i think you entirely missed the part where you can reset the controller to basically jailbreak it into hitting soft drifts by just hitting the notches, Ive been using gamecube controller for mario kart ever since i saw the shortcat video and i went from not being able to even soft drift, to being able to perfectly just with hitting the notches
Didn’t miss it, just didn’t show that part as Shortcat already talks about it and I didn’t want to just repeat his whole video!
14:44 you don't get purple mini turbos with smart steering on
Yeah motion is pretty good, from the looks of the gameplay it doesn't matter the most at your level because basically no one uses it.
You’re right, although my VR is climbing quickly - I only started playing online in Feb and so I’m probably still not at my skill ceiling in terms of VR
i thought this was proven since mario kart wii, i was a demon on wii with it
Task failed successfully
As far as I know, GCC is not considered a real alternative in high level mk8d.
it isnt
13:52 horning the bowser was an option
Underrated
People shake trick still?
Wow I never knew you could use Gambecube controller on Nintendo switch
you have to buy an adapter to do so, but you can get it for like 20€/$
Do you normally play with joycons?? I would definitely recommend a pro controller
I used to play with Joycons, now I play with the GameCube controller 😂 but yes, I probably will get the pro controller at some point!
I play it with the nso super Nintendo controller
Still waiting for shortcats response.
That's not even a real gamecube controller in the thumbnail
I never really got too much into playing mk8dx, only mkwii and gcn controller was always weird for me (you have to either claw or move fingers really quickly to trick), if I play this game maybe I'll try with this controller
I tried the GC controller. I went back to the Pro controller. Shake tricking is more useful imo. The buttons on the GC controller sucks, esp the shoulder buttons. They have such a long travel. Also, its wired which is annoying.
I agree tbf
Check out Tectone, trust me you’ll love him even though he doesn’t do Nintendo games
i started playing with the hori mario kart steering wheel and pedals
Mario Kart with pedals, that is impressive!
@@LouisG403 i mean there is only two,gas and break.Which i just hold gas .
14:44 you had smart steering on which doesn't allow purple mini turbos.
I haven't finished the video yet so you probably found out later in the video.
(Later) yup, I know that feeling.
waaitt…………. THAT WAS THREE MONTHS AGO??????????
Ah I wish fzero99 allowed GC controllers.
U mean Jperm right?
Perhaps some gliders were not meant to be vectored 18:20 😔
Hanging this quote on the wall above my TV
@Louis G: If you abused this glitch you might fine yourself banned from the online services, you don't have to worries I will not report you since they are no report system in Mario kart 8 deluxe, it will be up to Nintendo to decided if it is breaking their code of conduct. If you only did this in one video and never do it again off the video, then you don't have to worried about getting banned from the online services. I heard that Nintendo banned someone from the online services that never used any hack, and also neither used DNS hajacking, so maybe he was abusing this, you get banned from the online services in Mario kart 8 deluxe your banned from all online feature and not just Mario kart 8 deluxe online.
@Shortcat123: You can't get two coins from item boxes

Great video but that screen tearing is atrocious.

So many tearing on the video. It gets me dizzy. Sad.

Short cat wins😊
What do you mean 3 controllers? Why not mention 8bitdo?
MK8D is now pay to win
i also got it an di love it too
I'll stick with my pro controller.
Even with the knowledge that gamecube can motion glide easier, I'm still of the belief that motion gliding is a lame tech.
I believe it has its place in time trial and the highest level of play, but in the majority of online lobbies, i just get mildly annoyed when I see someone relying on it.
Its just a blatantly arbitrary skill to develop thats an extension of the already unorthodox tech of glider vectoring.
I'm just not a fan of tech that limits acessibility for basically no reason.
Players shouldn't be forced to use a specific character, vehicle or controller just to have a higher chance of winning.
To anyone who is considering switching, ask yourself
"Do I regularly face opponents who use this tech?"
"Do I really *need* to win more often than i already do?"
And
"Have I truly explored and mastered almost every other general purpose Mario Kart 8 tech?"
And only if you answered "yes" to at least 2 of these should you really consider a switch.
Because even in the most BRUTAL regional lobbies I end up in as a 50k VR player, I'd still say I place top 3 a good 75-90% of the time without it.
And at the end of the day, I'd argue that *in the hands of 99% of Mario Kart players, the skill of motion gliding can only serve to act as a crutch.*
Y'all on crack if you think shake tricking is anything other than cancerous
Gaeming
you talk like mumbo jumbo
FOR THE LAST TIME, ITS JPERM, NOT SHORTCATTTTT
also do a face reveal pls????
On his earlier videos you can see his face
its not the problem with the controller, its your skill issue
I use a pro controller that doesn’t have a motion sensor so I can motion glider 🥱🥱
