    I've received some messages lately of people who are still confused by stereo rigs.
    In this video, I will break down the very basic principles of what you need to do to get a stereo pedalboard. The different examples will show you what is necessary to do according to different combinations and placement of mono & stereo pedals.
    Of course, there are other ways of setting up a stereo rig, but I think this is the most simple way to do it.
    Pedals featured:
    TC Electronic Polytune
    Walrus Audio Deep Six Compressor
    Strymon El Capistan
    Strymon DIG

    For the last exemple, the solution is very simple if you want to keep the mono term at the end;A/B box (Morley for exemple). You get in mono and you have two outputs: A for amp 1 B for amp 2.

      Thanks for the good example! My goal with this video was to get the most simple I could to explain this to beginners. I see a lot of you know how to go deeper into it! I doubt someone who is new to stereo pedalboard would like to use an A/B box, programmable loop pedals, MIDI synchronisation.
      But clearly, that's really nice to see some other solutions in the comment section, I like it, keep them coming :)

    Wow! I just happened to stumble upon your pedalboard tips #6 and man, I think I'm ditching my drive pedals now to focus on a stereo rig, particularly an ambient setup. The difference between mono and stereo is just massive! Right now I only have the gfi clockword delay v2 and a marshall reflector reverb, and I hope that could work out fine. Now it's time to get a 2nd amp. Thanks a bunch sir for the eye opener :)

    +Tip :
    You need isolation when using 2 amps..
    My recommendation would be to buy a Humdinger from TheGigRig to avoid ground loops and phasing issues when connecting in stereo, before you fry something.

    • @ForeverChillMan
      @ForeverChillMan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not an expert on the matter or electricity in general, there is a whole episode on multi amp setups on That Pedal Show channel on TH-cam that I suggest checking out. My guess is there is some interaction between amps which requires isolation of both instrument levels, and also to phase de-sync can be an issue. A splitter device like the humdinger removes both problems.

  • @spholm
    @spholm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Nice an helpful videolesson, Antoine! BUT: You SHOULD run your signals from your last stereo pedal through an isolated ABY splitter to avoid hum and posible frequency cancellation (reduced signal over some frequencies). It also might be hazardous without an isolated splitter if your gear is not proberly grounded. The splitter must therefore be equipped with electrical isolated outputs like the Lehle Little Dual ABY splitter or others. A low cost splitter like i.e. the FenderABY is only equipped with a simple contact switcher and is not reccomendable in my opinion.

  • @philb4462
    @philb4462 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Here's my recommendation. Do everything pre-amp in mono, then put everything post-amp through as few boxes as possible. There are some great multi-effects boxes with delay, chorus, flanging, phasing, tremolo etc. all there in one box. I don't use pedals for that sort of thing.
    I use a Line 6 multi-effects unit, but there are plenty of options. It makes things sooooo much simpler. You can have preset configurations that you can recall with a single button, and it can go directly into a PA or computer. No double amplifier so less equipment to lug around. Simple!

  • @UnSoNiCxXx
    @UnSoNiCxXx 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Doing this way, you are going to have ground loops hum in the amps. So don't forget to use a ground isolator like the Radial Shotgun. And you have to be careful about phase problems between amps. For example some amps reverse the phase on the lead channel and others don't reverse it.

    Hi, Antoine! This video is very well made, and it's rare to see on youtube tutorial about this stereo thing (that always bugs me).
    I have this problem, want to record in stereo through audio interface: Guitar-->Strymon Sunset-->Timeline-->Big Sky-->Ditto Looper-->Audio Interface (Focusrite 2i2). If I understood what are you saying in the video, the best thing to do is to:
    1) get rid of ditto at the end of signal since it's mono, then
    2) place the timeline after the big sky and use the looper in the timeline to replace the ditto, then
    3) use the stereo breakout cable and go straight in the audio interface (then in daw and set the track to stereo)
    Is it correct or I have to consider something else?

    • @AntoineMichaudGuitar
      @AntoineMichaudGuitar  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great reasoning! However, there is no need for a breakout cable, since both your Big Sky and Timeline have stereo ins and outs! So you can come out of your Timeline with one cable for LEFT and one cable for RIGHT and plug them into your two inputs of your Scarlett. The only thing you will need is a good amplifier simulator plugin inside your DAW, or else it's going to sound dull a bit going straight into your interface without any emulation.
      Other solution is just to get a Ditto X4 who has stereo ins and outs, so you can keep your pedalboard chain untouched!

    • @Paolo_Pino
      @Paolo_Pino 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AntoineMichaudGuitar I don't know if it's possible to record simoultaneously from the two channels of the 2i2. If I remember correctly it's not possible. And if it's possible, I will have to record 2 mono tracks and then merge them together (on reaper, that it's what I use it's possible, but it's a clumsy long process). For this reason I opted for the breakout cable, since every input on the scarlett accept stereo signals, and it'll be much easier to record directly one stereo track. In the next weeks I will try both combination and let you know. Thanks for the quick reply! ;)

    • @AntoineMichaudGuitar
      @AntoineMichaudGuitar  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, don't do that! I want to save you from a complicated setup for nothing! You can do much simpler!
      I have the Scarlett 2i2 myself and can indeed record 2 tracks at the same time. On the website it clearly says: ''Perfect for recording two mics at once!''.
      Even if you record 2 mono tracks, it IS a stereo track. You just have to pan one to the Left and the other to the Right and... BOOM! You got your stereo recording. I record like this since years! I find it even better than a stereo track, because with two mono tracks panned, you have seperate control on the volume of the left and right sides. So if you inadvertently recorded one side quieter than the other, you can adjust each side seperately, which you can't do on a summed up stereo track.

    True stereo tremolo pedal that you could put at the end of your chain - Source Audio Vertigo.
    Source Audio is up there with TC Electronic and Strymon for stereo pedals. In fact, they go one better with true stereo drive pedals (the LA Lady, Kingmaker and Aftershock ones), so you can have practically all of your signal chain in stereo.

      I should've said in my first comment, the other true stereo tremolo I know of is the EHX Super Pulsar. It's incredibly fancy, it has to be one of, if not the, fanciest tremolo pedal there is. But it's expensive, at €259. The Vertigo is €178. (Thomann prices). They're both great. The Vertigo will do practically anything you'd normally ask from a tremolo. The Super Pulsar will do that plus a few more unique and interesting things.

    what happens if the cabling routing between 2 pedals is very tight, and in order to be able to run the 2 pedals in stereo I plug the stereo out of pedal 1 into the not stereo out of pedal 2 and the stereo out of pedal 2 into the not stereo out of pedal 1 ??? Would I still get the stereo effect ??? Or putting these in other words to not be confuse, insted of conecting the mono out of pedal 1 to the mono in of pedal 2 and stereo out of pedal 1into stereo out of pedal 2 ( to make the stereo connection ) you connect the mono out of pedal 1 into the stereo in of pedal 2 and the stereo out of pedal 1 into the mono in of pedal 2, still stereo effect ??
    Normal stereo connections :
    Pedal 1 Mono out ---------- Pedal 2 Mono in
    Pedal 2 Stereo Out ---------Pedal 2 Stereo In
    What Im asking :

I used the black and red splitter from the output of the last pedal in the chain and then connected the 2 cables to 2 amps. I just kept both amps on a clean setting and I got a much fuller sound than I do with just 1 amp. It loooks like this
    1. ---- Chorus ==Looper === amps or
    2. ----- Chorus --- Looper === amps

    • @tychoclavius4818

      The looper doesn't add any effect so splitting it there doesn't do anything for you. The chorus does, and the looper in stereo passes it on. Putting the chorus in mono defeats the purpose.

    Hey!
    I'm wondering what's considered the best options for a great, absolutely amazing "pitch shifter/Harmony effect"?
    Specifically with a 'digital piano, synth' and Rhodes.
    I imagine "stereo" is the better way to go in this situation. Not necessarily?
    The signal from my digital piano is probably also going to be more powerful than most effects pedals are made for right? So I'll start with a very low volume and test from there so that you don't damage the pedal. Is it worth getting a reamp box? Is one or two needed?
    How about just lowering the piano's volume line - to the outputs level to the level the pedals take.
    What gear would you personally recommend?

    Always wanted to ask someone that bought these patch cables. Honest question, I'm not being a smart ass: Why spend so much on patch cables? Do they really make a difference? I just checked, it's 17 dollars for a little 6 inch cable. Traditionally, quality matters most on longer run cables so I never understood why someone would pay so much for little patch cables, especially when you can get very high quality ones for much less. @@AntoineMichaudGuitar Thank you! So, I'm using the timeline and Boss Reverb RV-6. Does left output (timeline) go to input A (rv-6) and right output go to input B? And does the cables going into the amps have to be in a certain way too? Output A going to the left amp and output B to the right? Thank you so much for the help!

    So if we have only one jack for the input and one Jack for the output can we assume that it is a mono pedal and if so how can we use it with stereo pedals in the stereo chain? How do you tell if they are mono or not?

    I have the omec teleport with two monos, the tc viscous vibe and the strymon. Must I start running them all in stereo, or just the last two? Will the viscous vibe lose some effect if I ran it in mono?

    Hi Antoine, do you ever have any problems with solderless patch cables... a lot of people don't recommend them but they look so practical, flexible and short! I'd like to build a stereo pedal board and I need a lot of patch cables :)

    So I have a aby pedal running dry and wet effects to two amps. I have an old boss DD-3 in front of the wet amp. My question is since the DD3 delay has a direct out. Can I also run that into the dry Amps effects loop return or would it require a second input from the fx loop send? Hope that makes sense. I’m guessing I’ll need to get another delay with two inputs/outputs. Thanks!! Great video

    Is there a pedal that can break mono to stereo but also gives you a pan knob? Or do you just use an audio mixer with a pan feature for that (usually bulkier and harder to mount)?

    Antoine, very helpful video. I have a question for you. I’m building a stereo pedalboard but my last pedal in my chain is a radial switchbone which only has one input. I’m in the process of seeing if it will accept a stereo breakout cable, but because the switchbone will being going to two amps, it will still be in stereo correct? The end of my chain is;
    Analogman Bi chorus stereo
    Strymon El Capitan
    Gfi Specular Tempus
    Radial Jx2 Switchbone
    Amp 1
    Amp 2

    You can use the tremolo at the very end of a stereo pedal chain if you put it after only one of the two signals coming from the stereo pedal, while the other out goes straight to the amp. That way only one half will have the tremolo effect so that might sound weird and bad, but it might also be cool and definitely makes the stereo effect noticable.

    What if you were to need/want to buffer the signal, would you need only one buffer like the Mesa/Boogie High-wire at the beginning?

    This video was posted in 2017. I am watching this now in 2022. I liked it. But I have one question in my mind. Will u still be able to answer my question?
    The third example in the video, what if I don't have that mono pedal at the end, but instead want that stereo signal in the end to go to one single guitar amp for stereo effects? Is that possible? Will that converter help?

    • @AntoineMichaudGuitar
      @AntoineMichaudGuitar  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can't have stereo with a single mono amp. It's like asking to hear in stereo with a single earbud :-) it won't work! You need a second amp for stereo sound. Hope that helps!

  • @dfmitchell330

    Thanks, this is exactly what I was looking for. One question though regarding recording in stereo. Can you plug in your stereo output cables from your pedal into your interface and record in stereo? My interface has two "line ins". Wondering if the last pedal in my chain is stereo, if I could run that into the two line ins in the interface and record that way. Thanks again!

    • @AntoineMichaudGuitar
      @AntoineMichaudGuitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey David! I don't recommend plugging a guitar into the line inputs. It will sound dull and with a low level. You should plug them in the instrument inputs on the front of the interface that are made for high impedance such as plugging microphones or instruments direct in.

    How about if I have a stereo output reverb pedal and I want to connect it to my studio monitor(presonus eris 3.5).
    What cable do I use and from where should I plug it?
    Is it left and right out of reverb into left of studio monitor
    or
    left of reverb into left and right of studio monitor
    or
    stereo of both?

    Very helpful video thanks! Might seem like a dumb question but if i have a pedal with 2 inputs and 2 outputs, can i plug mono into the one input and still get the signal split. Or does it have to have one input which splits into 2 outputs? A reply would be very helpful thank you!

    • @AntoineMichaudGuitar
      @AntoineMichaudGuitar  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, even if the pedal has 2 inputs and 2 outputs, if you want to use it as your first stereo pedal in the chain, you can plug only 1 input (left side usually) and 2 outputs, and that would be a correct way to obtain stereo.

  • @joshbrown4506
    @joshbrown4506 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I noticed you are using mono cables, even for the stereo connections. Is this okay to do, to accomplish stereo? Silly question probably, but I’m learning lol

    • @AntoineMichaudGuitar
      @AntoineMichaudGuitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No stupid questions here! In a simplified way, stereo only means the sum of 2 mono parts together, one to the left, one to the right. You don't need such a thing as a ''stereo cable'' to achieve stereo! Kinda like when you listen to music with earbuds: you don't need a ''stereo earbud'' in each ear. You just put one ''mono earbud'' on each ear and you can hear stereo :-) that's the same with amps and pedals!

    Hi Antoine thank you for the video, I have a question. I'm running Guitar > Timeline > BigSky > HX Stomp (amp emulation) > PA system/soundboard. Do I need two cables from Timeline left/right Out into BigSky left/right IN, then 2 cables BigSky left/right Out into Stomp left/right In, and finally the Stomp (2 cables Out) into 2 channels of the board (2 DI boxes)?

    • @AntoineMichaudGuitar

    Hi, thanks for the explanations !
    But I have a question : I have an Electro Harmonix Echo (1 input, 1 output) linked to my Strymon Mobius (2 inputs, 2 outputs). Do I have to split the output of my Electro Harmonix into 2 outputs to link it to the stereo inputs of my Strymon, or it doesn't matter as long as the 2 outputs of my Strymon are linked to 2 amplificators or in stereo with another pedal ?
    My question is, can I leave the second input of my Strymon Mobius unlinked ?
    Thanks a lot !

    Thanks for the nice video Antoine. Do you know if I can take two mono signals (e.g. one from my drives and one from my synth pedal) and combine these into a Strymon (Flint) stereo input by using a Y cable? From there I can feed Left (synth) and Right (drives) into L and R of my Boss Looper. I will then take the synth sound (with reverb, i.e. Left OUT) into the PA, and the drives (Right OUT) into my amp. Thanks!

    I hope someone reads this. If it's a dumb question my bad. I want to know if I can have my Laney lc 50 and pedalboard running as usual with a cable going from the other output on my boss rv-3 and connect it to a little practice amp I have? Will I be able to get a little stereo effect like that?
