@@AntoineMichaudGuitarLooping I had a stereo tremolo pedal but it only had a mono input which I found absurd. All stereo pedals should have stereo ins and outs. Otherwise, you end up with stupid compromises and effects that can't be used to their potential.
Hi, Antoine! This video is very well made, and it's rare to see on youtube tutorial about this stereo thing (that always bugs me). I have this problem, want to record in stereo through audio interface: Guitar-->Strymon Sunset-->Timeline-->Big Sky-->Ditto Looper-->Audio Interface (Focusrite 2i2). If I understood what are you saying in the video, the best thing to do is to: 1) get rid of ditto at the end of signal since it's mono, then 2) place the timeline after the big sky and use the looper in the timeline to replace the ditto, then 3) use the stereo breakout cable and go straight in the audio interface (then in daw and set the track to stereo) Is it correct or I have to consider something else?
Great reasoning! However, there is no need for a breakout cable, since both your Big Sky and Timeline have stereo ins and outs! So you can come out of your Timeline with one cable for LEFT and one cable for RIGHT and plug them into your two inputs of your Scarlett. The only thing you will need is a good amplifier simulator plugin inside your DAW, or else it's going to sound dull a bit going straight into your interface without any emulation. Other solution is just to get a Ditto X4 who has stereo ins and outs, so you can keep your pedalboard chain untouched!
@@AntoineMichaudGuitarLooping I don't know if it's possible to record simoultaneously from the two channels of the 2i2. If I remember correctly it's not possible. And if it's possible, I will have to record 2 mono tracks and then merge them together (on reaper, that it's what I use it's possible, but it's a clumsy long process). For this reason I opted for the breakout cable, since every input on the scarlett accept stereo signals, and it'll be much easier to record directly one stereo track. In the next weeks I will try both combination and let you know. Thanks for the quick reply! ;)
No, don't do that! I want to save you from a complicated setup for nothing! You can do much simpler! I have the Scarlett 2i2 myself and can indeed record 2 tracks at the same time. On the website it clearly says: ''Perfect for recording two mics at once!''. Even if you record 2 mono tracks, it IS a stereo track. You just have to pan one to the Left and the other to the Right and... BOOM! You got your stereo recording. I record like this since years! I find it even better than a stereo track, because with two mono tracks panned, you have seperate control on the volume of the left and right sides. So if you inadvertently recorded one side quieter than the other, you can adjust each side seperately, which you can't do on a summed up stereo track.
@@AntoineMichaudGuitarLooping Thanks a lot! Now that I know what I have to do it's time to shop for a good pair of quality cables. ;) Do you have suggestions?
I just bought a lehle stereo volume pedal and I want to put it after my drive pedals but. I have 3 strymon pedals at the end.I'm not sure how to hook it up in stereo properly.Any suggestions????
I watched your other videos. Having a stereo set up is awesome. I'm wondering how can I do this stereo settings from a mono pedal and stereo pedal that has 2 inputs and outputs? I've tried but it sounds not even to me.
So if we have only one jack for the input and one Jack for the output can we assume that it is a mono pedal and if so how can we use it with stereo pedals in the stereo chain? How do you tell if they are mono or not?
No problem, then I will change it with a rc30 that should have in and out stereo. The only thing that does not convince me: is not possible adjust the input level ... Boh, I'm documenting... Thank you so much for your reply!
True stereo tremolo pedal that you could put at the end of your chain - Source Audio Vertigo. Source Audio is up there with TC Electronic and Strymon for stereo pedals. In fact, they go one better with true stereo drive pedals (the LA Lady, Kingmaker and Aftershock ones), so you can have practically all of your signal chain in stereo.
I should've said in my first comment, the other true stereo tremolo I know of is the EHX Super Pulsar. It's incredibly fancy, it has to be one of, if not the, fanciest tremolo pedal there is. But it's expensive, at €259. The Vertigo is €178. (Thomann prices). They're both great. The Vertigo will do practically anything you'd normally ask from a tremolo. The Super Pulsar will do that plus a few more unique and interesting things.
So I have a aby pedal running dry and wet effects to two amps. I have an old boss DD-3 in front of the wet amp. My question is since the DD3 delay has a direct out. Can I also run that into the dry Amps effects loop return or would it require a second input from the fx loop send? Hope that makes sense. I’m guessing I’ll need to get another delay with two inputs/outputs. Thanks!! Great video
1.Hi first example, suppose delay is also mono and only reverb is stereo....is it still possible for stereo sound? 2. Regarding using two amps how do we set them for best sound? For worship perse or in general live sound.
@@AntoineMichaudGuitarLooping Thank you! So, I'm using the timeline and Boss Reverb RV-6. Does left output (timeline) go to input A (rv-6) and right output go to input B? And does the cables going into the amps have to be in a certain way too? Output A going to the left amp and output B to the right? Thank you so much for the help!
I've got a tip for you: Take your mono Vibrato (I recommend analog) and plug it into the R or L channel only. And there you have a very beautiful stereo chorus!
No one ever shows how to run pedals through stereo effects loops. I want to run my wet effects through the effects loop through two amps. How do you do that?
Doing this way, you are going to have ground loops hum in the amps. So don't forget to use a ground isolator like the Radial Shotgun. And you have to be careful about phase problems between amps. For example some amps reverse the phase on the lead channel and others don't reverse it.
I would like to send the mono signal from a Moog 37 to the timeline and then to the Big Sky and i'm not sure with these pedals witch input to use from the Moog. Is any difference is i use left or right input of the first pedal. How about to split the signal from Moog in two mono and then to the stereo input. I would like to get a nice ambient sound that is stereo as output. I don't use a guitar. I'm a electronic music producer. How you guys would approach this?
Hi Great video what about going in stereo to the FOH what type of pre amp or device i need. Currently i have a Boss IR 200 as my preamp so do i need another device to go to FOH direct? please let mer know thank you
Thank you for this video. I am running into some of the same compromise issues and I wonder if you've solved any issues since uploading this video? I am using a Roland JC40 and a Fender Vibrolux simultaneously, and I am running into an issue that seems unsolvable. The compromise is that I am currently forced to place my overdrive pedals (which I ONLY want to be sent to the Vibrolux) AFTER my two delay pedals, which I'd ideally prefer NOT to do. I'd like to have them set up the conventional way, overdrive--->delay. The ultimate goal is to send only my clean/modulation effects to the JC40 (which doesn't sound good with overdrive) while sending the entire chain including the overdrives to the Vibrolux. I can only do that by placing the overdrives after my delays, in between the only delay pedal I have with stereo outs (EHX Grand Canyon) and the last pedal in my chain which is the Strymon Blue Sky. The signal is then split to each amp via the Blue Sky's L/R stereo outputs. Is there anything I am overlooking? Thanks so much!
Hey man. You've got a great puzzle right here... The only way I could see that happening is if you used an ABY box straight after your guitar, then plug the A output of the ABY box to your drives pedals, then directly to Amp#1. After that, plug the B output to your Amp#2 immediately without passing through any other pedal. Then you would need all your modulation/delay/reverb pedals to have 2 inputs and 2 outputs each, and plug them in the effects loop of each of your amp. So Amp #1 would SEND to your first Modulation pedal Left input and RETURN to the Left output of your last reverb pedal. Then, same thing: Amp#2 would SEND to your first Modulation pedal Right input and RETURN to the Right ouput of your last reverb pedal. Finally, you would need to play on the Y (which means both amps at the same time) of your split box all the time. There is a lot of conditions: you need an ABY box, you need 2 amps that have effects loops available, and you need all of your mod/delay/reverb pedals to be dual input / dual output. I mean, that's a LOT of trouble just to to split overdrives :-)
Antoine Michaud, thank you for the detailed and thoughtful reply! I think I’ll just stay with what I have. I JUST got the Vibrolux which doesn’t have an effects loop and I am too in love with my delays to try and replace them with ones that have stereo ins/outs. I’m just gonna learn to love drive after delay!!
Hum...nice trick! Now...can I make this work with my Rocktron loop8? I'm only running stereo pedals thru it, so I wonder how to bring mono pedals in my board, hum...
Thanks, this is exactly what I was looking for. One question though regarding recording in stereo. Can you plug in your stereo output cables from your pedal into your interface and record in stereo? My interface has two "line ins". Wondering if the last pedal in my chain is stereo, if I could run that into the two line ins in the interface and record that way. Thanks again!
Hey David! I don't recommend plugging a guitar into the line inputs. It will sound dull and with a low level. You should plug them in the instrument inputs on the front of the interface that are made for high impedance such as plugging microphones or instruments direct in.
Is there a pedal that can break mono to stereo but also gives you a pan knob? Or do you just use an audio mixer with a pan feature for that (usually bulkier and harder to mount)?
Recently invested into some pedals (microcosm and particles 2) and I’m not sure how to set them up where I have them both outputting in stereo. Not sure if the cables I’m using are the proper ones. I’m essentially connecting into my Apollo interface hi-z input.
Very helpful video thanks! Might seem like a dumb question but if i have a pedal with 2 inputs and 2 outputs, can i plug mono into the one input and still get the signal split. Or does it have to have one input which splits into 2 outputs? A reply would be very helpful thank you!
Yes, even if the pedal has 2 inputs and 2 outputs, if you want to use it as your first stereo pedal in the chain, you can plug only 1 input (left side usually) and 2 outputs, and that would be a correct way to obtain stereo.
good video, but i need stereo on the loop effects , y use= guitar---> Mxr ABY---> imput amp A and imput amp B, so... i need a stereo delay but in the both FX loops of this 2 amps
Hi Antoine, do you ever have any problems with solderless patch cables... a lot of people don't recommend them but they look so practical, flexible and short! I'd like to build a stereo pedal board and I need a lot of patch cables :)
Hey I absolutely love your channel! Thanks for your videos! I’m trying to learn how to run my pedalboard in stereo. I have all strymon pedals except a fuzz face at the beginning. So fuzz into my tuner into compadre into my sunset into riverside into Ola into Brigadier into bigsky into deco then my looper. I have done some research but still not straight with it all. Any help would be appreciated and what cables I have to buy. And my amps are Fender Blues Jr and a Fender 57 Champ 5 watt (can I use this? If not I have another amp)
Thank you, Julie! I would start the stereo path from the Strymon Ola (gain, compressor, tuner & fuzz don't need to be stereo). So one cable from the Riverside's out, into the Ola's in, and then 2 cables from the Ola's outs into the Brigadier. The only problem, is that the Brigadier only has 1 input, so you have to purchase a cable like this (www.strymon.net/product/1-4-trs-male-to-dual-1-4-ts-female-cable/), and then unscrew the Brigadier and move a tiny jumper inside to get the stereo configuration. I show how to do it in this video (th-cam.com/video/ZxVwkt9tl7A/w-d-xo.html). I use the El Capistan in this video, but the principle is the same. Then the outputs of the Brigadier go to the Big Sky which has full stereo inputs and outputs, but you're going to have to purchase a second set of stereo splitter cable (first link I shared) and do the same thing with the Deco to plug it in stereo. If you have a new version of the Deco, you can flip the switch on the back for stereo configuration, but if it's an older model, you'll need to unscrew and move the jumper on this one too. Then to your looper and you're good to go, just send the last 2 cables coming from the looper, one to your left amp, and one to your right amp.
@@AntoineMichaudGuitarLooping ok fantastic explanation.. I have the deco v2 so that’s good. Now the two cables that go out from Ola to brigadier.. I have a long Ernie ball cable as my Ola is on the end of first line of the pedalboard and the Brigadier is on the first of the second tier of the pedalboard.. so do I just purchase another one of the long Ernie ball cable.. the patch cables that I now use I can continue to use ? Or do I have to buy another type to do stereo? Also do the two amps have to be in separate positions or can they be side by side. I am really only doing this to see how the Deco sounds in stereo as they all say it should be in stereo.. thanks so so much.
@@AntoineMichaudGuitarLooping also I’m in Canada and can’t seem to find the strymon Cale that you linked to. .. there is a hosa one.. can I use that or do I have to order one from US?
No, you can use the Hosa one without problem, that's what I was using. I'm Canadian too! And yes, you'll need another long cable, the little stereo splitter is quite short, so you need your cables to be long enough to reach that close to the Brigadier. And the amps can sound great when separated (that'll give you a wider stereo spectrum). But it my case, I don't have space in my small home studio, so they are side by side, and it still sounds very good.
@@AntoineMichaudGuitarLooping thanks so much so what about if I grab my pedalboard and one amp and go play with my friends..it would be mono then wouldn’t it? Could I still keep the same set up? Or just make a smaller pedalboard with some of the pedals in mono and take that.. sorry for so many questions this is new to me.. your videos have helped me out in soooo many ways especially with using my strymon pedals for ambient music. ❤️
I just bought the Orange Rocker 32 stereo amp. I bought a walrus mono slo multi texture reverb pedal. I should of bought a stereo reverb device. So what stereo pedal would you recommend that would pair up with the SLÖ nicely.I was thinking the Meris poly moon.
Merci pour ton vidéo!!! A partir du moment que tu as des pédales stéréo tu dois absolument brancher les deux sorties…j’ai la boss rv6 au milieu de mon board suivie d’une pedal mono et je fini avec mon delay qui à deux output…
i just have a question. is it possible to have a stereo output on a mono amplifier? like my strymon bluesky stereo out but i will plug it in into a mono speaker. using this kind of cable conversions
You can just use the Left out of from the BlueSky and that's going to work just fine. Unless you have ping pong delays in your chain, you wouldn't lose too much. If not, you need to sum to mono before going to the amp (the Strymon Iridium has a ''mono-sum'' mode, for example).
Hey Antoine, to an amp is one thing but I haven’t seen anyone explain how to record to an audio interface from your stereo pedalboard directly to the computer. Is there a way that’s best? Possible?
I mean, it's pretty straightforward. If you have 2 inputs on your audio interface, just plug your instruments cables directly into the two inputs and you're good to go!
Great question. Yes, you should plug all of them in stereo. Each stereo pedal that has only one cable coming out of it is plugged in mono and sound is only coming from one side. So it's important to plug all of them in stereo for the full benefit!
Hi, thanks for the explanations ! But I have a question : I have an Electro Harmonix Echo (1 input, 1 output) linked to my Strymon Mobius (2 inputs, 2 outputs). Do I have to split the output of my Electro Harmonix into 2 outputs to link it to the stereo inputs of my Strymon, or it doesn't matter as long as the 2 outputs of my Strymon are linked to 2 amplificators or in stereo with another pedal ? My question is, can I leave the second input of my Strymon Mobius unlinked ? Thanks a lot !
Hello! If you have pedals with mono input and stereo outputs as you in the video with strymon hola and digidelay, would not be enough run the two in mono and then just put a stereo pedal at the end?
Hey thanks! I know you can. The question is if it makes a difference? A) connect all three stereo outputs or B) connect mono until the last one which you connect it stereo out

2) place the timeline after the big sky and use the looper in the timeline to replace the ditto, then
3) use the stereo breakout cable and go straight in the audio interface (then in daw and set the track to stereo)
Is it correct or I have to consider something else?
The best are Mogami cables! Just check the difference of noise ratio with regular cables: th-cam.com/video/tUG4FkRSf2c/w-d-xo.html
I just bought a lehle stereo volume pedal and I want to put it after my drive pedals but. I have 3 strymon pedals at the end.I'm not sure how to hook it up in stereo properly.Any suggestions????
Hi Great video so how you do the same thing but this time with the IR200 and DD200 from Boss please let me know thank you
learned alot, tnx... btw, what is the name of the pedal jacks you use? looks practical
Awesome!
I watched your other videos. Having a stereo set up is awesome. I'm wondering how can I do this stereo settings from a mono pedal and stereo pedal that has 2 inputs and outputs? I've tried but it sounds not even to me.
Lo solucionaste ?
So if I want to stereo three strymons together I’ll need two of those cables to go stereo out to input, stereo out to input to amp 1 & amp 2?
Nice review. Hey may I know what is the brand of your patch cables? Thanks
Great information... Thank you !! What kind of pedal cables are you using?
But isn't that input being used at 3:29 made for a TS cable and not a TRS cable?
I bought the cable recommended by Strymon on their own website for it, so I think it should be fine to use it like that!
Thanks!
How long are your patch cables? Looking into getting some.
Can i place a stereo volume pedal at the end after a mono delay pedal to turn it into a stereo
So if we have only one jack for the input and one Jack for the output can we assume that it is a mono pedal and if so how can we use it with stereo pedals in the stereo chain? How do you tell if they are mono or not?
Nice idea, but I have some doubt in my case.. I have to enter in last inside a Loopstation Boss (RC20XL), can I do with it? Thanks
Yeah, it seems it can only accept mono input and output, sorry :-(
No problem, then I will change it with a rc30 that should have in and out stereo.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Thanks!! Great video
Question, Antoine, can I put the BOSS Chorus last, because it's in stereo?
1.Hi first example, suppose delay is also mono and only reverb is stereo....is it still possible for stereo sound?
2. Regarding using two amps how do we set them for best sound? For worship perse or in general live sound.
So, in the first example...your guitar is plugged into the tuner and the two cables going into your amps are plugged into the reverb pedal?
Yes!
Wet/Dry with VIbrato is the best! Especially with a boosted overdrive and delay. It just sounds huge.
Boss Vibrato Wazacraft is good
Which Patckcables are that? Looking great 👍🏻
George L's!
So you are sacrificing your sound capabilities of the chain for stereo.?
Strymon has option for trs input on stereo pedals. A trs mono input to stereo outputs
No problem man, have fun!
Hum...nice trick! Now...can I make this work with my Rocktron loop8? I'm only running stereo pedals thru it, so I wonder how to bring mono pedals in my board, hum...
I want to ask, if I use a stereo to 2 mono cable plugged directly from the guitar's pickup to two line in the mixer, will it be stereo? thank you
Thanks, this is exactly what I was looking for.
What if you want to run your delays and chorus through the effects loop?
Can you please explain how to set up Example 1 with a synth instead of a Guitar? I use a Scarlet 2i2 and wonder how to connect it like in Example 1.
What if you were to need/want to buffer the signal, would you need only one buffer like the Mesa/Boogie High-wire at the beginning?
Will the Boss Line LS-2 or Electro Harmonix switchblade/switchblade plus accept a stereo input?
good video, but i need stereo on the loop effects , y use= guitar---> Mxr ABY---> imput amp A and imput amp B, so... i need a stereo delay but in the both FX loops of this 2 amps
What are your patch cables?
How about the zoom g5n multi effects ?
I just bought the Orange Rocker 32 stereo amp. I bought a walrus mono slo multi texture reverb pedal. I should of bought a stereo reverb device. So what stereo pedal would you recommend that would pair up with the SLÖ nicely.I was thinking the Meris poly moon.
Hello if I'm going to do live performance using a stereo rig without any amp provided,is it work straight to DI box and how it's going to sound like?
Hahahaha! Awesome, trying to plug in the 1/4 cable to the spua-trem where there is no output. I like the humor on this one.
Hahaha :D
Merci pour ton vidéo!!! A partir du moment que tu as des pédales stéréo tu dois absolument brancher les deux sorties…j’ai la boss rv6 au milieu de mon board suivie d’une pedal mono et je fini avec mon delay qui à deux output…
Nice!
i just have a question.
is it possible to have a stereo output on a mono amplifier?
like my strymon bluesky stereo out but i will plug it in into a mono speaker. using this kind of cable conversions
You can just use the Left out of from the BlueSky and that's going to work just fine. Unless you have ping pong delays in your chain, you wouldn't lose too much. If not, you need to sum to mono before going to the amp (the Strymon Iridium has a ''mono-sum'' mode, for example).
those patch cables look really nice what are they called?
George L's
Hey Antoine, to an amp is one thing but I haven’t seen anyone explain how to record to an audio interface from your stereo pedalboard directly to the computer. Is there a way that’s best? Possible?
I mean, it's pretty straightforward. If you have 2 inputs on your audio interface, just plug your instruments cables directly into the two inputs and you're good to go!
Big Thumbs Up
So if I have multiple sterio pedals, why should I connect them all, instead of just the last one? Does it further divide the signal?
Yes, you can plug any stereo pedal in mono if you want!
Hey thanks!
I know you can. The question is if it makes a difference? A) connect all three stereo outputs or B) connect mono until the last one which you connect it stereo out
Hello and great video on this. Question, how do I go from a stereo out (Strymon bluesky) into a recording interface ( 1 input Apollo twin) ?
Unfortunately, you can only come mono out from your Bluesky. You would need 2 inputs on your interface to record DI in stereo.
Thank you. Any tips?
What if I go timeline into bluesky into ditto? Do I kill the stereo signal because ditto?
Yes, if you use the mono pedal. I would recommand you to get the Stereo Ditto looper if this is what you want to do! I think it's just 20$ more.
Luke oh thanks anyway. Already figured it out long ago 👍🏼
