      Same! I've been playing for years and never dug into MIDI controllers. After a single one of his videos I was sold on the idea. I had no idea what I was missing out on, and it was all explained so succinctly! And yet... after comparing the Morningstar pedal to the competition... it was the Morningstar's small form factor and flexibility (especially software integration) that sold me specifically on the Morningstar.

    It is true that a MIDI-controlled pedalboard gives you infinite possibilities, considering the number of (MIDI-enabled) pedals you can drop on to the board.
    But one must also consider:
    * assiging a distinct MIDI channel each pedal
    * Remembering the Program Change numbers you assign to each setting within each pedal, which is no small task, especially on pedals with no display of any kind.
    * And last but by no means least, the number of patch cables exponentially raises the prospect of a cable failure "somewhere" on your board, and at a gig that could be a catastrophe.
    Don't get me wrong, I actually dig MIDI and if I could afford an all Strymon board, I might be tempted to build it.
    I'm just pointing these things out because there are tradeoffs with everything, including this.

    Coming back to my guitars after many years of them being wall decoration, I'm still not sure how I want to go about choosing between (or blending) my old hardware effects pedals with the new plug-in based world. This video really helped connect the dots for me in terms of how MIDI ties into the guitar effects world and gives me a framework for deciding how I want to blend the physical/virtual spaces with my keyboard-based items.
    This is perhaps the beset "absolute beginners" guide to I've seen as I've dove back into the music world. On top of that, even though it's a vendor proffered video, you didn't push your product other than the natural use of it in context, which says a lot about integrity to me. So, while I said at the top I'm still assessing how I want to blend it all, your product just got a solid spot on my assessment radar without me seeing an ad for it or anyone stuffing it in my face in a big "HERE LOOK AT THIS" way. Definite props for the video and your approach to helping people enjoy the art/hobby/profession. Give genuinely and the karma will take care of the rewards - this video implies that you are living by that notion.
    I haven't dug into your product as yet, but based on what I'm seeing, I'm thinking that it should be able to trigger presets on across my ecosystem, which, even outside of a live performance scenario has some pretty amazing workflow implications to me when I'm composing. Indeed, having just typed that, I took a pause to look at your channel and I see you have a video that, while slightly more direct product tutorial, seems to still be covering the concept I'm after (it's on controlling a DAW). I'm not a Morningstar owner as yet. I may never be, but I'm going to wind up subscribing to this channel for at least the near term and that certainly means you'll be front of mind for this kind of thing!
    Again, thanks, and great stuff!

    Forgive me for asking, but when I just want to use one effect at a time like a reverb for example, do I have to tell other pedals in the midi chain to be off? I’ll have my overdrives in the ML5 so I’m unsure whether to make each switch a preset on the MC8 or send a CC message for each loop. I want to have one bank where I have each overdrive accessible like a traditional loop switcher. Then I want to be able toggle in the reverb for each overdrive. For some reason the toggle settings keep getting reversed so the blinking one just has my overdrive on there. Lol I still have a lot to learn!

      It may be possible, the Morningstar controller have a new feature called CC Sequence Generator, if the device has access to presets via CC messages ( many don't, but some of my pedals do) You can have up to 16 messages sent as a sequence with timing control. Check you manual and see if there is access to program change as CC number/value.

    • @brianelyo4898
      @brianelyo4898 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cubistguitar amazing! the manual isnt much re: midi, but i'll ask the builder. its a Tararira by Bananana - but im thinking yes. he says every parameter can be controlled with midi. one thing i was considering was a midi device with sliders to control the various sequence steps and his answer to that question was "sequence can be controlled by note signals from an external MIDI device. MIDI NOTE C0-C1 corresponds to pitch 1-8 respectively" - so if the preset banks do the same, and with your device, i could possibly turn a 8-step sequencer into a 72-step sequencer but only need to send 9-messages if im understanding all this correctly.

    • @cubistguitar
      @cubistguitar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brianelyo4898 Im just a fan/user of the morningstar devices, love my MC8. If all you need is a stream of Midi notes, the MC controllers send MIDI notes also, you could make them a set of scrollable messages on one button and each time you press you get a new Midi note sent, but I dont think it has feature to sequence that list of midi notes, but James with Morningstar would be the guy to ask for a straight answer.

    • @brianelyo4898
      @brianelyo4898 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cubistguitar gotcha - well thanks for the input - i'll reach out more directly, cos i think this is close to what im wanting to do - cos even a one-button press that would cycle thru the banks would be sweet - cycling thru the banks on tararira is easy, but also tricky with timing, if i could hit one button on the controller and cycle thru a1, a2, a3 and so-forth each time i hit it, that would work well for me - (as ive been getting my head into these devices, that may be a pretty typical midi operation...?) but id love for the sequence to autocycle... philip glass here i come! hehe...
