Klonoa: Door to Phantomile was released in very late 1997 in Japan for the PlayStation and in the opinion of Caddy is one of the best platformers on the PS1 - actually, maybe one of the best platforming games, period. Full of originality, charm, smooth difficulty and 2.5D aplenty - this Klonoa review will go through Klonoa gameplay from the start to the ending, but not in a walkthrough fashion (I WON’T TELL YOU THIS GAME’S SECRETS). Yes, including the sadness of the ending, not just the epic final boss. I also can’t pronounce the game to save my life - Door to Phantomile? That subtitle alone must have put people off Klonoa and therefore turned the game into a cult classic, and also must have been the reason why that subtitle was dropped for the Nintendo Wii remake. Yes, Klonoa Wii. Who’d have thought it. I haven’t played Klonoa Wii so a review of that won’t be for a while, if at all, but I’ve heard it’s okay. Give me the PS version any day of the week - and in case you were wondering - yeah, Klonoa didn’t appear on the PS Classic for some bizarre reason, but it is available for PS Vita, PSP and PS3 with the digital version on the PS Store. The gameplay from this video wasn’t taken from the PS Network version though and was instead emulated with ePSXe and recorded with NVidia Shadowplay - giving the brilliant sprite work the vibrance it deserves and crispness that was previously NOT seen in my original Caddicarus episode because I captured it with a Hauppauge HD PVR and it looked pretty mediocre. Klonoa remake? Well try Caddicarus remake. Yeah. Now in even better HD. This episode is a redo as well as anything else.

Just played the demo on Xbox One, it looks so good!
Caddy should cover the rest of the series at some point, including the Wii remake.

This is an overlooked gem, if Crash and Spyro never existed Klonoa would have been the face of the PlayStation.

Surreal hearing Caddicarus talk about improving old content, claiming that his skills have improved since years back,

I mean hell if I had a decade of my personal history on the internet in video form I'd be self-conscious too but this seems a tad overkill.

The (OLD) branding feels a little too judgmental. Caddy’s older videos are just as good as his newer ones, and I feel like branding it as old might put people off watching good content.

23:38 Yoshizawa actually had wished for Klonoa to be included in the PS classic. This information can be found in one of his tweets (If it does still exist, since he recently deleted a bunch for unrelated reasons)
I guess Bandai Namco was more happy giving them Mr. Driller than Klonoa.

you know, it took this comment for me to realize that this is EXACTLY how I would describe Klonoa as simply as possible: the Kirby of Playstation. this should have FAR more likes. they even have a similar attack, though Klonoa's is arguably more simple than Kirby's, in the sense that they both involve air: Kirby inhales, Klonoa inflates.

I feel like it is hard to pronounce only for english and similar languages... I think it has a pretty obvious pronounciation, but then again, I'm Italian, and pronunciation-wise italian and japanase aren't that far off(and that's the only similarity pretty much)

I hope this means you'll be reviewing Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil at some point. That was the first PS2 game I had ever played, and I still love it to bits.

Ohh that game, i remember how many hours i played, and what a weird impression it gave me.
For years i couldn't beat the labyrint because i could not avoid starting to cry after a couple minutes, that was a really weird atmosphere
@@ShadwSonic Why not try if you can find a used copy on eBay? That's where I bought my copy a couple of years ago. It wasn't cheap, but it still was affordable. :)
Funny thing, this prompted me to look again... and somehow that led me to discover a way to EMULATE Lunataea! The sound effects are borked up unfortunately, but the voices, music, and most importantly gameplay all run smoothly!

I never played this game, but I played Klonoa 2 and it's one of my favourite nostalgic game ever. If you can find a copy (I've heard it's extremely rare), it would've been awesome if you reviewed it!
Rosalind Klonoa 2 is rare? Now I'm happy I found this series through a used Klonoa 2 copy at Gamestop for super cheap (With manual in great condition and original case in great condition too) many years back. I still replay it because it's so good.

Why are you always so damn hard on your older videos? Honestly I still think most of them hold up really well
"You are your own worst critic" as they say. He has a drive to improve himself and thus sees a lot of tiny (or sometimes larger) flaws and exaggerates their importance, presumably to incentivize himself to do better next time. Of course, I'm just speculating.
Also, the klonoa video specifically was admittedly pretty heavily flawed as a review. It ignored a lot of great parts of the game in favor of making silly jokes.
Many TH-camrs that you watch will also agree that they're really not fans of their much older work.
Some of his older vids are better than some of his newer ones imo!

Your original klonoa video is how me and my friends found you! Whenever we have nostalgic trips to when we were younger your old 2012 videos always come up, 2012 caddy was beautiful and really entertaining, even if he was a goofy 18 year old.
Absolutely best track in the game for me - Baladium's Drive .. the big snake-like flying boss .. right before your grandpa dies .. x(
The thing about that track in particular is how it conveys the urgency of the events that just occurred moments before. And It's gorgeous.

I think it's really cool that you wanted to look back on a game you'd covered previously and find a new way to give it some love. This was an awesome video, Caddi.
Having now played this as part of the Fantasy Reverie Series over twenty years after starting my PS2 career with Lunatea's Veil (Klonoa 2) it's...strange, to be honest. Nostalgic but also new and surprising. I deliberately didn't finish the video so I got an even bigger surprise than I expected. I saw the old Klonoa review years ago and knew about Ghadius and how terrifying he was, but the ending man, that broke me. It didn't make me cry, but was an absolute gutpunch alright...
