    One thing I noticed when playing these games is that a Klonoa remake/sequel should have been released on the 3ds. This whole 2,5d perspective and the ability to shoot enemies in the foreground and background was practically made for stereoscopic 3d. At the end of the day I am glad that we got them ported to all current gen consoles but this is my dream port that will unfortunately never happen

    Considering Klonoa's unique gameplay style for its time, it might be fair to say that Namco really couldn't think of a way to effectively advertise the game, either that, or Namco was too busy marketing more important games like Tekken and the sort.
    But out of all the platforming series' that have fell into obscurity, Klonoa deserves another chance, and hopefully, if the Phantasy Reverie Series goes well, we might just get that long awaited Klonoa 3.

    • @Evilriku13
      @Evilriku13 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I think they tried to hype Klonoa up in a worse way due to the 90s edgyness and having trouble not giving away the twist about him being a dream traveler. I could have done a better advert for it like "Klonoa wakes up one morning to see his world becoming shattered! Run, jump and toss your enemies around like a basketball in Klonoa's epic journey to save his world! *some voice in the back* "Klonoa, where are you? We need you!" *titledrop* "Klonoa, let your imagination run wild!"
      That in itself teases stuff without spoiling too much and would sound more like something that people could lure in. But no we gotta have "blow it or get out" 🤥

    The weird thing about the collection is that the physics are based on the frame rate. And since the switch version does run at a lower frame rate then the other ports, it does play differently

    • @Evilriku13
      @Evilriku13 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      oh thats not all, if you compare it to the OG counteparts u notice stuff missing from soundeffects, dialogue changes and tons and tons of atmosphere being lost, thanks to UE4's "everything the light touches becomes a neon light brightness standard". Like the Wii version may have, for what is given, solid graphics (I prefer them over the HD remaster/reboot) and while I dislike that Kupo does the talking more now I do am ok with what is presented there, even if it is even easier then before, and the ending scene still is problematic due to not having the dark sky or more fitting for the atmosphere. Because it's a melancholic game in the 2nd half, and Klonoa 2 does pick up on that with more symbolism and Klonoa apparently trying to coup with the trauma from the first game.

    The original Klonoa game on PS1 has a very unique hold on me. I was 6 years old when I played The Door to Phantomile and it was the first time I ever felt something when listening to music. The game's soundtrack perfectly mirrors the current mood of the story: the bouncy optimism in the early levels, the mysterious melancholy in the middle levels and the ominous tragedy as you are rushing in the final levels. The gameplay and character design were competitive with other game titles on the PS1 market, but the musical journey is something that makes Klonoa so criminally underrated
    Whenever I hear the soundtrack or see footage of Klonoa running around the Moon Kingdom it always brings me back to that memory of discovering. No matter where I am in life, whether it'll be my wedding/ birth of my children etc, I will always wish to return to playing Klonoa for the first time, one last time.

    The announcement of the Klonoa remakes during the Nintendo Direct made me discover about this obscure video game character. I got really hyped for the release and now since it's released, Klonoa has become one of my new favorite video game characters. I give a huge "Wahoo" to Bandai Namco for reviving this series for the modern audience to enjoy.

    Until today, the only knowledge I had about Klonoa was the name, and his design (which I've always liked). So this video was a "Klonoa 101" for me.
    It's sad seeing a wonderful series fizzling out like this, especially one with such a great visual style and protagonist.
    Here's hoping we see a new Klonoa on Switch at some point, cuz the little cat-rabbit boi deserves it. Wahoo!✨ *cough and Vexx too cough*

    Klonoa was one of the few titles I remember playing the demo for and begging for the full game. Although I never got to fully play Door to Phantomile, I had a copy of Lunatea's Veil and literally completed it (one of a few games I actually beat despite not being a hardcore gamer). When the remake got announced, I felt so glad my childhood underrated mascot was given a second chance to gain traction in the modern era. Klonoa is one underdog (or cat...or cabbit...) that deserves more love nowadays.

This is legit entering my top5 franchises of all times, with Klonoa 1 possibly being my GOTY. I loved everything about it. It's super playable, the controls are great, the level design is great, the character is cute, the story is cute, the music is excellent, the graphics have aged surprisingly well for a 3D game from this era, the difficulty is fair and offers just that tiny bit of challenge that makes it not boring... I haven't had this much fun in a video game for a long time. What a hidden gem!

  • @AluminumFusion22

    Supposedly the re-design in the Wii version came about because Namco-Bandai was afraid the original character design would frighten younger audiences, most notably with Klonoa's teeth and his yellow eyes, and that explains why once fan feedback came in saying to keep the original design intact, they abided.

    And i totally agree, Klonoa is super important and feels really distinct from any other platformer I've ever played. Love the characters and stories, and the gameplay (especially in Klonoa 2) is super varied but not to the point where you're hoping to get back to the standard formula like in Crash Bandicoot 3 with all its vehicle sections. Heck, I think the snowboarding sections in Klonoa 2 might be my favorites out of everything in the duology.
    I really wish Bandai Namco had promoted the game more, these games deserve to be experienced.

    This is one of my favorites - if not my absolute all-time favorite game series, and I'm glad to see someone give a much more genuine look through the series that isn't just "it's a cute fun kiddie game :3", because Klonoa is at its most appealing when its gameplay, aesthetics, and heartfelt stories are all taken into consideration. I think Klonoa is a prime example of "kids deserve media that treats them with respect and offers deeper themes".
    I'm incredibly wary about where the series may go because I worry about triple-A studios considering some aspects of the franchise to be less marketable (kinda like how the Wiimake tried to make it less cutesy and really screwed things up because of that) but I'm also happy to see these things recognized and even praised in this video. If nothing happens, I'm still happy with what we got, but here's hoping Klonoa has a good future ahead of him! Or I guess a very engaging, fun, but traumatizing future ahead of him. Love me some traumatized little animals.

Most people also didn't bother to play the GBA games which is sad. It's a crime they didn't do well, and Klonoa fans are just bad at supporting this franchise. They're football/soccer games for the DS and 3DS with 6 main series games (the 6th was never localised but you can find translation patches) all based around the anime with the same name. The series is due its first game in over a decade next year for the switch but the development has been rocky. Interested to see if you do a video on this series, it was a personal favourite growing up and it's my favourite use of the DS touch screen.

    Big "Wahoo" Energy is hilarious and one of the best video titles / subtitles I've ever seen

    Klonoa would sell a lot better if Namco bothered to advertise the damn games. What happened with the Phantasy Reverie Series is new to Klonoa at all. They don’t bother to advertise the damn games and the few times they do the ads are terrible.
    Klonoa Legendary Star Medal has no continuity with the main games and exists in its own world.

    I have a weird relationship with Klonoa.
    As a kid, my ma rented Klonoa 2 but I never got far and had to return it after I got to the carnival area. After which, for some time all I could remember was the "dialogue" Klonoa would say when entering a level.
    Years pass and I emulated two of the game boy advance games.
    A little while later, I see Caddicarus' video on Klonoa 1
    Even later, I see Chase Face's more in-depth vid on Klonoa 1
    Years later I join a Discord server that's Klonoa themed and had a bunch of cool people that were excited for the Phantasy Reverie series being released. I got the duology, thoroughly enjoyed it and am so happy that I never finished 2 all those years ago. Kept a spot in my mind that I only recently managed to fill.
    Love this flappy eared boy
