    The Truth is that most people don't understand unless you are in a hobby with batteries like RCs, that each Lithium Ion cell is 3.7v nominal up to 4.2v fully charged. Those tool batteries usually use the 18650 cells and if its advertising 18v or 20v its usually 5 cells. Higher amps just mean more in parallel to make the run time longer.
    If you multiply 3.7v x 5 its 18.5v but fully charged they will be around 20-21v. So that's why manufacturers call their batteries 18v or 20v which is really the same thing..

      Chase023 yeah, my 18v batteries show over 20v on lith. Ion

  • @dieevenharder10
    @dieevenharder10 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Each battery cell has a nominal voltage of 3.6 volts and a maximum voltage of just over 4 volts.
    3.6 volts (nominal) x 5 cells = 18 volts
    4 volts (maximum) x 5 cells = 20 volts
    That’s it. That’s the entire difference in 18V vs 20V Max batteries. It’s only a matter of whether the company is using nominal voltage or maximum voltage as their rating.

    Hello there, I have a question for you. I have just purchased a Stanley Fatmax drill set here in Australia. It is rated at 18v. I have noticed it is an EXACT copy of the US available 20v Porter Cable drill(which isn't sold in Aus).
    Do you agree, apart from colours, they should be the exact same? Considering price, I should be able to use either yellow Stanley 18v batteries or 20v Porter Cable batteries interchangeably. Am I correct in assuming this?

    Ha, nice green screen you guys. Love it. its great to know for somebody dont know 18v and 20v are actually the same starting volt is over 20V. And all the lithium battey pack has a circuit board to control the discharge when the battery is below 18V. Fancy stuff like some kind of cell safety feature that protects the tool during charging and also prevents over discharging. And most 18v or 20v pack are using 5x high drain18650cells in the small pack and 10 in the big pack. In some country they name their 12v line to 10.8v line as well. Same thing all about how they brand it;) even on the old 18v Ni-cd pack they are usually starting over 20V after fully charged as well. I have been doing some learning to reseach on power tools batteries. It just seems to interest me a lot;) hope TIA will share more about power tools batteries soon. I would like to heard from everyone idea and thoughts.

    if you take any 18 or 20V lithium pack apart you'll find 5x '18650' lithium cells in series - which is to say that from a technical//power standpoint all brands' 18/20V batteries are identical (about 21V when fully charged). I've been 3D printing adapters so you can use 20V batteries in older '18V' tools for years. curious which brands folks would like to adapt between most (e.g. makita -> milwaukee). right now I just have porter cable + dewalt done

    hi, I was thinking of buying an xr 20v dewalt cordless multi tool on eBay US. Would my 4ah 18v European spec xr batterys be ok with this? the tool is sold with no battery or charger.
    thanks

    • @adrn25m
      @adrn25m 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The battery and charger are the same and compatible but if you buy USA manufactured dewalt tools in Europe the USA Warrenty on the tool will not work in Europe as its region specific.
      The same applies to European manufactured dewalt tools, the European Warrenty will not work in USA. Could be expensive if the tool needs repair or replacement under Warrenty as you would have to pay for it yourself instead or ship it back to the country it was manufactured to get it fixed under Warrenty.
      Buying USA manufactured dewalt tools in Europe is cheaper but it doesn't include a any kind of valid Warrenty on it even bought brand new so be careful if you take the risk.

    Hey Guys, great vid again answering a question I was googling for month about 18v XR Li-Ion and 20v Max Li-Ion battery interchangeability as I have few 18v XR batteries and every single time I wanted to take advantage of a great 20v tool deal on eBay USA, I had second thoughts about compatibility.Thanks.
    BTW, what is that DeWalt nailer on the wall? Is it the DeWalt Brushless Framing gun or a new Brad Nailer which I have seen nowhere else?!?

  • @adrn25m
    @adrn25m 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In Europe we just call them 18v post and 18v slide instead of 18v 20v as that's the fitting type and there is less confusion than 18v and 20v.
    Dewalt 18v slide could be a trade mark if dewalt wanted to do it.

    • @thuhreb
      @thuhreb 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Toolsinaction I agree. 20v vs 18v DaWalt tool power is a world of difference. Also, I like how the lithium stuff doesn't slow down as much towards the end of the battery usage. A caveat there is you don't get much of a warning that you'll need a charge soon, but most of their larger batteries have the push button remaining power indicator. Now you can purchase the adaptor that allows you to put 20v dewalt lithium ion batteries on the older 18v tools. So if you have an old saws all or something and don't want to replace it, you can go this route and maintain one battery standard.

    • @MsSomeonenew
      @MsSomeonenew 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      All 18V Li-Ion batteries will settle at 20V when fully charged, and the moment you power your tool that voltage drops to just over 18V, then crawls back up to 20 when you leave them.
      This is similar to how all batteries work.
      Only difference in power will be come from the tools themselves. But a word of warning, Li-Ion powered tools come with a voltage limit which cuts you off when batteries go too low which wasn't put in older tools so you need to keep an eye on power drops yourself.

    • @w19ely85
      @w19ely85 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      MsSomeonenew The voltage cut off will be in the bms of the battery, not the actual tool

I’ve recently seen kits at my HD of 12 v drill & impact drivers for a much lower price. Including brands like Makita & Milwaukee still selling 12 v kits at a much lower price, I guess they are getting rid of old stock?

    • @adrn25m
      @adrn25m 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Frank C
      no as the connection is different, new battery is a slide on type instead of the old post type because the new lithium ion batteries require special charging and safety circuitry to stop the battery's over charging and exploding and balances each individual lithium ion cell inside the battery pack to make sure they are all as equal as possible. NIMH and NiCd battery technology also uses a different type of charge method of constant voltage, constant current but lithium batterys use a different type specifically for lithium so even if you got it to charge from a nicad charger somehow with wires from the charger to battery, you would just be waiting for the explosion and fire and gas venting from the battery!!!
      Lithium batterys are dangerous unless treated with care and respect and must only be used with the dedicated dewalt charger fully compatible for that battery pack (chemistry and voltage)

      Exactly. In my local Farm and Fleet they have the bare tools in the same area. I can easily see the 20 as opposed to the 18 without doing any further research. Grab the box I need and know for a fact my slide packs will be compatible. Why people get so worked up over this is amazing to me. It's common knowledge at this point. I'm mean really do people think 12v is really 12v? Yes Milwaukee defenders I'm talking to you, they do the exact same thing! To me it's not a big deal at all, do your homework and buy what you like.

    I always believed that DeWalt made this change when they went to the Lithium Series batteries so that people didn't try to charge a lithium ion battery with a nicad/nimh charger. (Bad news to do this, bye bye battery and charger, most likely)
    In addition, it signifies the change over to their brushless lines which are much more efficient. While it IS a marketing ploy used by SEVERAL manufacturers, keep in mind that you can buy replacement 18v Lithium Ion batteries that will run your 18v DeWalt tools. you just have to replace the charger. They have a new charger that will auto detect your battery type and will charge all 3 types (NiCad, NiMH, AND Lithium Ion). That way, you can mix and match your batteries, and only replace your packs as you need to. I personally think this is a fantastic idea, and one that should be pushed harder by tool reviewers such as yourself, and by the Manufacturers themselves. Some tools, new battery technology... best of both worlds!
    However, when you buy the new charger, it does come with a new battery also, but it's a NiCad XRP pack. (Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!) I mean, why would I buy a new triple duty charger, and want a NiCad battery to go with it? I'm sure they did this to keep cost down, but come on. What's the point of having a new Li charger if your brand new battery is a NiCad???

      We had a 18V XRP lithium Nano. I gave to to the marina and they still use it with no issues. If I can track it down I will test the voltages on it. Great Comment!

    thank you guys. i picked up the 18v cause they were cheaper. salesman did mention that there is not much difference but i was skeptical. so if they are the same, would it be fare to say that the 18v would run out faster then 20v ? if your view, what the most commonly used powertool today. if possible could you provide brand and brand name just for us youtubers here.

    Thx for that branding information. Those tricky bastards in marketing^^
    The usual Lithium-Ion cell delivers 3,6 volts ... so simple math later we know, that 5 cells add up to 18V and 6 cells would be at 21,6 volts.
    Now when i take a usual 3.6 volt (btw open circuit voltage) cell and load it with a fast battery charger , that runs normally with 4,1 or 4,2 volts, my 5 cell battery pack ends up with 20,5 volts.
    Someone made same research/experiences? Its the same with my drill batterys or single cells.
    So i just can say those marketing bastards a pretty tricky ;)

      Li ion will take 3.65 volts per cell max without long term damage & reduction in battery life.

    I'm over the pond in the uk.. 20v peak charge then your down to 18v after that..would still favour the dewalt over a bosch,Panasonic or any other tool brand that have ever built Tv's haha
    But then again I'm a self confessed Dewalt fanboy,so I would say that..
