I've just done a new battery build on here (cornz38) and would like to thank you. I had been thinking the same, the nominal voltage of the cells is 18.7 but the charged voltage is about 20v and i had wondered if they had used a different regulator for charging but no, your video confirms my own suspicions. Great explanation. I was looking for this info everywhere but no answer till now. Thanks. I have bought an 20v dcf 887 from us and after 3 years it seems that it has some problems like overheating too quickly and the power tork decreases alot. The tools are the same 20v and 18v? I called a service here in Romania and they said that they do not have parts for 20v..
20v and 18v are identical. The dcf887 does seem to have some problems, it’s nothing to do with the battery. I have used 18v parts on my 20v drill, I don’t see why it would be any different for the impact driver since 18v and 20v are identical except for the stickers on the side. Thank you for watching.

what are the numbers on the battery like 5, 8 an 2. what do the numbers stand for. Why do they all different numbers.
Those numbers are the amount of amp hours the battery has. It is the amount of run time that that battery has. A 4AH battery has almost double the amount of run time than a 2AH battery.
dewalt batteries in america are 18v nominal, 20v is a marketing gimmick that stanley black and decker uses, when the tool is doing work it is strictly 18v

Could you run the charger on 220v, the one it came with the kit from USA will work in Europe?

Chargers always have markings on them check input voltage and it will probably either say 120V, 240V, or 120-240V which means dual voltage, I think genuine dewalt chargers are only single voltage but I have seen aftermarket chargers that are dual voltage.

I also bought a dewalt drill, it says that it is 18 volts, but when I bought a battery for it, I was told that there are American batteries - 20 volts, and European batteries of 18 volts. I took the battery from the USA. And so there are five 18650 batteries and they are identical. Hello from Russia. You can change the batteries yourself later, the flux for steel and solder before. The only thing is that the capacity will be less if LG or Samsung batteries are used.

So, here in the uk we are being offered the 20v max version of the dcf923 impact wrench (3/8).we normally get the 18v xr option but it appears that both are compatible with each other!

Amazon offer their international seemless shipping for UK sales which is really misleading as nobody can just nip to the local dewalt supplier and buy spare batteries(20v). The 20v "atomic" and the UK 923 "B/N" versions are identicle in other than voltage! Pointless in my view but go figure🤷🏼♂️
Amazon USA ships here to France as well. That’s part of the reason I made the video to point out that you can use 18v xr batteries on 20v tools. They presumably did it because people prefer names like “20 v max” over plain old 18v. Frankly 18v sounds more professional to me and 20 v max sounds like what all the no-name and low quality brands use

My colleagues swear by milwaukee and as yet I havnt seen anything that comes close to their 1/2 full power nut gun and the 3/4 version is truly insane. If you charge both, they will show about 20v. I've already checked it. In Russia, you can take both 20 volts and 18 volts. There are 5 18650 batteries each. It depends on what voltage you take as a basis. Or 3.7 as in Europe , or 4 as in the USA.
The difference between 20 V and 18 V is simply in labeling rules. Here in the US, they are allowed to state the maximum voltage on the label. In Europe they are required to use the nominal voltage on the battery. So BOTH are 20 V max, 18 nominal...again the difference being which number the local government allows them to slap on the label.
Same goes with the 40 WH vs 36. One is max, one is nominal...and both are true in both batteries.
My curiosity lies in what the "XR" designation tells us. Here in the states, we have XR batteries, and non XR batteries...and my interweb digging tonight is trying to find out what that means.
XR stands for extreme run time. As far as I know it means nothing, just trying to make a difference between the entry level and the higher end tools I think. Here in France all Dewalt tools are labeled XR, even the atomic line and 12v max tools. Interestingly Dewalt’s 12v tools are now labeled as 12v max here instead of 10.8v like they used to be

On the other, Europe is about to face a conundrum. As is, we know that all of the tools are both 20V max and 18 Nominal voltage. The US allows them to put the higher of the two numbers on the label, while Europe does not.
Enter the new powerstack batteries to this equation. With those batteries, max voltage is still 20...but nominal voltage comes in at 19.5. That was the advancement. So what does Europe do, in the future, with tools that have different nominal voltage based on the battery used?
It's a question I pose, to which I have no answer.

Yes, that is pretty much what’s going on.
Absolutely. Battery cells are vary in voltage, depending on they are fully charged or low. A nominal 3.7V cell is about 4 to 4.2 when its fully charged and around 3 volts when its low. If there are 5 cells in it, then you can see you can call them 18V 20V or even 21Volt as well. I think 20Vmax is not a lie, 18V also.ok, but you are really use it most of the.time above this voltage. The hardware itself is the same by the way.
Both batteries are identical.. No difference whatsoever.. They both use the same battery cells inside, Each individual cell is rated for 4.2v fully charged.. So !! actually both the 18v and 20v would be showing more like 21v fully charged.. The 20v thing is just a marketing tactic to make the Us version sound more powerfull.. But its completely identical in every way to the 18v... They cant say 21v or choose not to because the cells mightnt make 4.2v each fully charged.. Some chargers limit the max voltage the cells can charge to in an effort to increase lifespan.. The reason 18v is more truthfull statment to claim on the packs is because we hardly ever operate the batteries fully charged.. Its usually you pick up a pack and theres somwhere between 2 bars charge showing.. This is around 18v or nominal voltage.. Buy 20v tools and use them with 18v packs, buy 20v packs and use them with 18v tools.. All will work identical with no difference whatsoever.. Its just a sticker..

Why do they have different Watthours?
Adrian Jusko watthours are volts multiplied by amp hours. So 2ah times twenty volts is 40 wh and 2ah times 18 volts is 36 wh.
And what's the main reason for us market to name 20 and 60 volts instead of 18 and 54 volts tools? Is it measured differently in Europe than in US?

@Attila Szabo - It might not be a lie but it went against established convention and as you can tell from the comments here it's done nothing but cause confusion. It was a shitty condescending shady move for them to suddenly start calling what was previously 18V, as 20V like it was somehow newer or better. It is identical to 18V technology because it IS 18V technology.
Milwaukee has a patten on anything that is labeled 18v, so any 18v battery label for any company has to pay a royalty fee to put that on their battery pack. This is why you now have 20v on most tools and makita is moving away from 18v with their 40v, metabo now has 36v etc. once the trigger is pressed on a 20v battery it’s back to 18v.
Is that only in the US or is it worldwide? Weren’t Makita, Dewalt, Hitachi and a lot of other brands making 18v tools long before Milwaukee was?
I know this is in the United States. So Makita is actually one of the first and I believe Hilti as well to implement an 18v battery. Milwaukee decided to formulate a licensing rights on anything that is of multiple lithium ion batteries at 18v. There is alot to the rights Milwaukee has and I believe Makita settled a suit with them in 2009.

They are the same battery, in America they advertise the peak voltage, in Europe, the average. An 18v battery peaks at 20v. A 20v battery averages at 18. The only actual difference is the writing on the side.

It was purely a marketing decision. You crack them open and they are the same cells! In the US research showed consumers like bigger numbers - so even when placed side-by-side the people on the test panels picked terms like Max and 20V over XR and 18V. Europeans seem, for the most part, not so swayed by pure marketing gimmicks and buy what they need - say what you like about the Germans, but they are very functional!
