55+ . Fell asleep with youtube on automatic....found my way here. Never realized what young people had to go through with this. Fell in love with Qcknd (saw another one of her vids before this one). Society might think of eliminating the word alternative--IT IS OFFENSIVE to self expression. Love this young ladies expression.

I've been getting tattooed since I was 17, but only started to get 'heavily tattooed' when I was 22 working where I work now - a Department store.
My managers have never had an issues with my tattoos!
Like you said about McDonalds I think it really depends on the managers - it can vary each place.
If I was to work in the store I work at now but say in London I'd probably have to cover up my arms.

I'm a tattooed/modified person and I work in the SF/Silicon Valley tech scene! I've never had any trouble getting hired at large (and sometimes quite corporate) companies, despite facial piercings and visible tattoos. Thanks for sharing you insight, Qcknd. It's great for young people to know that their careers are no longer limited by choosing to be part of modified culture. If you're qualified, articulate, and charismatic- that's what counts the most. Who wants to work for a company or follow a career path that doesn't accept you for you, anyway! :)

Tattoos, especially as an engineer, in tech, don't matter. People care about your work more than your tattoos. It's a very progressive industry, which is awesome. My friend works at Google, and he has a neck tattoo. I'm getting tattooed and I even work (right now) on the tech/finance side of things, and no one minds. Once again, the work you do > tattoos.

I work as a financial analyst (think: very conservative office) and I have both of my arms (one arm almost a full sleeve) and my thighs tattooed. I just always wear long sleeves at work and dresses/skirts that go just above the knee or pants. I also have stretched ears, but I can hide them with my hair, and a septum piercing, which I flip up when I'm at work. Being modified and having a career is definitely possible!

Definitely depends on the office. I've worked in a jewelry store, life insurance claims, and now as an accountant. All of the places I have worked were okay with tattoos and the last two were okay with tattoos, piercings, and fashion hair. I have very visible tattoos, facial piercings, stretched ears and vibrant hair.

Also I say if I have to wear long sleeves because of my tattoos so be it! It's kind of annoying and a hassle but it's not like they're asking you to go get them removed. Plus if you work in an air conditioned job it shouldn't be a huge issue anyways. But like you said most places are more open about them now a days which is super cool.

i'm tattooed and i work as a chemist with the texas state government.
yes you read that right. the state of texas didn't care that i had tattoos, they just wanted to know i was a competent and reliable employee. anything is possible! however, they did want me to cover up at work. i've had a few occasions where i was hot, so i'd take off my jacket and have my tattoos visible. no one cared, not even the division director who is this conservative, old, white man. they did, however, stress that they do not like facial piercings. i luckily don't plan on getting any, but i do have 12 ear piercings and they don't mind those.

I'm a tattooed nurse! Now, I live in Canada, aka The Land of Polite People, so I have never had a problem with my tattoos. Patients either really enjoy them or don't say anything at all, and if management has a problem with it, it's easy to just wear long sleeves (hospitals get really cold, anyways!).
So to any hopeful nurslings out there who've got body art, don't let stigmas stop you! You'd be surprised at how accepting people actually are.

I'm a tattoo collecting law enforcement officer! Not all departments appreciate tattoos, but our local organizations will allow it as long as they're not "offensive". One of my coworkers is tattooed from his jaw line down, including his hands.
Almost all departments will not allow piercing modifications, but that's just for your safety. Adds too many things an angry/drunk/high person could grab onto to injure you.
Most AAA clubs and other travel agencies also allow tattoos and minor piercings (again as long as not "offensive") for their employees. I know several employees and they have no problem. They've only asked them to cover one that has a curse word in the script.
I've worked at a college, and tattoos were fine for both faculty and staff. I've also worked at an elementary school system that allowed small visible tattoos. It will depend on what school/school system, but they have a tendency to be more relaxed in recent times.
I'm sorry this is really long, I wanted to share some of my experience with a few other types of jobs. I and family/friends who are tattooed people have had experience with the above listed fields as well as a number of others (mostly office work).
    Hope this helps!! :)

Wish everywhere would be okay with tattoos and piercings, they are so common now and it doesn't change who you are, how well you work. I know some people say they don't like looking at them, but that can go for someone without any mods, maybe they aren't the most attractive being to look at but you can't say anything, you just deal. So people should just get used to piercings and tattoos. Have a good work ethic, be clean and wear nice clothes.

I work in a nice office that works with children and their families and I was surprised to find out that they are perfectly ok with tattoos. a lot of the managers actually have tattoos and one lady is covered in them, but she's always covered up so a lot of people didn't notice until one day when she came to work with a skirt and short sleeves on and we noticed that she was literally covered in them. but no one said a thing to her. another manager I work close to has a visible neck tattoo. again, no one says a thing. I was so surprised because I wanted tattoos but didn't get any because I thought my job wouldn't like it. Needless to say I have now gotten my first tattoo and am planning on getting more, and actually got compliments for my tattoo from various people at work. My office is awesome. more places need to start being more open minded like that. I think the work place is making progress but it still has a long way to go!

I was never once asked to do anything about any of those things, most of my coworkers had tattoos, all of my managers were pretty heavily tattooed as well. To my knowledge all Teavanas allow these things as well. We had a starbucks right across from us and I believe that they just weren't allowed to have ringed face jewelry for health/safety reasons.

going into the interview for my current job, i put in a clear retainer for my nose hoop and kept my one (at the time) tattoo covered by a cardigan. i wasn't really sure if the company itself had any feelings about mods so i wanted to be on the safe side, especially considering this is my first job in the field with the degree i graduated with. however, i then learned that a lot of my coworkers had visible mods, so it's pretty chill. i have more tattoos now but i still keep them covered because i know some clientele can have conservative views on tattoos and i don't always want to open myself up to conversations about them.
i also worked at target! they're totally chill about having fun colored hair, piercings, and tattoos. i also worked at urban outfitters and of course, they don't care about how many mods you have and how visible they are!

Hey this is a great video because many people are not aware that there are a number of tattooed people like myself in the corporate industry. I myself am currently working in business development for a software company and was an intern at a bank before that (I'm only in my 20s). My tattoo's are on both upper arms though (one on my leg) and I wear suits, so they are never visible at all. Even when I was at university in business school, a couple had some tattoos. Not many, but a few. It shows our society has changed dramatically and tattoos are becoming expensive and are so well done today. My advice for those looking into the professional world, go ahead get tattooed BUT make sure you can also dress professionally and get tattooed at spots you can hide for work. I know some companies are fine now a days, but this is just to be safe.

I have worked several customer service jobs at my university, nannying for years, worked at a bookstore, smoothie shop, a local sports and wellness program focused for elementary-aged children, and now work at a shelter for teenagers. I have never had an issue with tattoos showing, and have never been asked to keep them covered. I'm happy that our generation is moving up into the administrative/manager/hiring positions, so that the tattoo stigma in the work place can finally disappear. Having a tattoo does not make me question a person's professionalism.

Piercings that don't mind multiple ear or gauges, but from my friends that have septum pierced they do flip it up at work, I can't remember for like a small lip ring or nose ring or eyebrow ring, but as long as it isn't too distracting Best Buy seems pretty okay with it. This also depends on sometimes how friendly your store manager is with these things, but we have a pretty clear rulebook from what I remember. Tattoos are okay to have as you will still get hired if you have them, but normally they will want you to cover up your visible tattoos if you are pretty heavily tattooed (a full half sleeve or more as I have seen forearm tattoos or other arm tattoos that don't get covered ever). The uniform is black pants and a blue polo so you normally just will want to wear a long sleeve shirt under the polo, I remember that some of my friends who were heavily tattooed on their arms and it wasn't ever a problem if they showed off their arms without the sleeves, it is mainly more for customers to feel more at ease because of the stigma of tattooing and normally older generations you want to make judgements about it. This also depends on your store and the demographic you serve and how tattooed you are, I don't remember seeing anyone that worked there with face or hand tattoos but for the most part they are pretty open to anyone being modified.

I really loved the background and quality of this video!!! I like how you just ramble about what you love it's very inspiring! Could you make a video on your Aveda school and what you thought of the whole Aveda experience? Sort of like the pros and cons? I'm going there next year, and I can't find any good videos on the school! And I loved all your other videos talking about your beauty school experience. You're great!! Keep it up!! :-)

I work as a UI designer at a pretty big software company; I just got my first tattoo, which is on my forearm (basically a half sleeve, very visible) and I know many coworkers that have visible tattoos and it seems to be a non-issue. Software companies (especially newer ones and start-ups) are really laid back, people come in to work in t-shirts and jeans, tattoos, dyed hair, the works with no complaints!

I work at a large discount store in Belgium, we have about 750 stores in the Benelux. I am in management at my store. We are not allowed to show our tattoos or piercings. I have my nose pierced, and take out my piercing on at the beginning of the week and put it back in at the end of the week. I have a tattoo on my wrist, and have to cover that up every day with a tennis wristband in the colour of the store. My other tattoos on my leg, shoulder and chest are not visible when I'm wearing my work uniform. My job definitly prevents me from getting some tattoos I want (like a sleeve) but it pays the bills and I like my job so I choose the placement of my tattoos very carefully. For my shoulder/arm tattoo I brought my workshirt with me to the artist to make sure the tattoo wasn't peeking out from under the sleeve of the shirt.

I'm too young to have tattoos anyway, but I have a rather unique sense of style, and I tend to get a fair bit of crap for it. The number of times I've gotten a weird or straight up rude look or remark from someone about my clothing, hairstyle, blue lipstick, singular piercing that everyone seems to think is the weirdest thing in the world etc... Disrespectful people annoy me... Especially since I live in an area that's so painfully uncultured. I swear, everyone's exactly the same! They all dress the same, speak the same, look the same, do the same things... I'm just trying to promote some individuality in one of the most plain places I know of!
Haha, sorry... I'm just super passionate about this kind of stuff.

Tattooed and Employed! I have a full sleeve and visible hand tattoos. I have had very little issues regarding my tattoos, both in part time positions and full time professional settings. I work full time as a Clinical Lab Tech, helping with chemo testing for cancer patients and did not have any issues with visible tattoos or piercings. Not long ago I also worked part time at a pizza shop. There I was asked to cover most of my tattoos, but because of my professional demeanor was made a store manager. I am currently in the Pittsburgh area and moving to Philly shortly to begin my PhD studies. I will be working part time and honestly don't think my tattoos will be an issue while searching for work. It's all about your demeanor and making sure to present yourself professionally! :]

I compete in local Miss America competitions and tattoos has always been somewhat controversial. There used to be rules against showing your tattoos on stage (i.e for the swimsuit portion) but they have since removed that rule and now there is sort of an unspoken rule that showing your tattoos will hurt your chances of winning. I, personally, have a few fairly large tattoos that I choose not to cover when I compete and I am definitely one of the very few who has made this decision. I have placed a number of times without covering and there has even been a contestant on the Miss America stage who chose to not cover them. The world is evolving

I work as a page designer for a newspaper and while I usually keep my tattoos covered for the same reasons you mentioned, many people here have visible tattoos. In fact, the managers never even bring up the subject, so I'm excited to start working on my sleeve and other more visible tattoos. I was always worried they might limit my opportunities, but I've finally decided that I don't want to live by what other people "might" think.

I work in a transitional/rehab nursing center and we are allowed to have tattoos, piercings and colored hair as long as it looks professional and you are good at what you do. A guy on night shift has a gargoyle on his arm, one of the nurses in the morning has many tattoos. One of the evening nurses has her lip pierced and tattoos, and our social worker has vibrant purple hair in a flattering pixie cut. Our DoN always is well dressed but always wears black and dark colors.

I work at a Starbucks on a military base and I have a nose piercing and one tattoo on my forearm. Several of my managers (including the store manager) are very heavily tattooed and the store manager has her ears stretched to 1 1/2 inches. As far as I know the corporate Starbucks policy is that all tattoos below the neck are okay, nose piercings are the only facial piercings allowed, and ears can be stretched as large as you want provided they don't become and inconvenience (like having long hair or something would be).

So much of what this video talks about, and the comments, relates to me. I work at McDonald's for now, I'm an assistant manager (and I turned down the store manager position because I am in school and don't want or need that responsibility right now haha) and I'm in nursing school! Seeing tons of comments from RN's saying that either showing tattoos is no problem, or covering them up with long sleeves under scrubs is easy. I got my first tattoo earlier this week, I'm unsure how many I want to get, but I'm feeling confident that I'll get to decide and my employment won't be too much of a problem :)

I started getting tattooed while working in a nursing home and never had an issue from visiting family or residents, they were all like - "hey it's your bod, whatever!" - I think I lucked out.. some crabby coworkers would make comments but I was never told to actually cover or stop getting tattooed. Love your view on telling people it's inappropriate to touch you, I've been dealing with that for 4-5 years and never even thought of this as an option because it's super awkward. I've had my wrist peeking out and get people asking me to take my sweater off, or demand I move to show certain parts of my arms.. I haven't gone about saying 'no' yet because I'm so freaking shy, do not need further confrontation. But I feel like I'm feeding the flame and showing them that it's totally cool and proper and that they should feel free to interrupt at any time :(

As a retail manager, I would confidently say that the policy regarding body modifications is left to the discretion of the store manager. Within the companies that I have worked for I found most often that the policy is loosely defined and a manager would typically decide how to enforce. So don't be discouraged if you've heard a rumor about working at a certain place! It's still worth going for!

The dress code at my location isn't even very strict. We have to wear either black or khaki pants, any kind of shirt, and a red vest! And they really do appreciate employees, lots of treats in the breakroom and great benefits during the holidays. 10/10 would recommend.

When I first started working at Starbucks in 2015 I had to cover my tattoos, I was allowed no more than 2 piercings per ear and none on my face. We also weren't allowed to wear rings with gems in them or excessive jewelry. However, after like 6 months they relaxed the policy. Tattoos are now allowed as long as the design is cleared with the manager first (they can't be "offensive") and you can have a small nose stud (no septum). The two piercings per ear was still in place as far as I know.

I actually have worked at two coffee places, I have had A LOT of different jobs (retail, arcade, 2 coffee shops, 5 hotel desks, 2 call centers, a door to door thing, and a Jewelry store) the coffee shops were actually both really strict but that was because of the franchise owners. The first coffee shop I put a glass retainer in my nose and took my lip ring out for work, the second one made me even take out my industrial and other ear piercings. They had no visible tattoo policies but were sightly more flexible about it.

Hi! I don't remember where I heard/saw it and I might be wrong, but Starbucks in the US, it's not a brand that just build their stores and designate a manager for them. In fact, for being a franchise, the owner, under some regulations, decides the amount of employees and guidelines for them. Unlike countries, such as Japan, where there's only one person who controls how many stores open up over there. Sorry for my grammar, I haven't written something in english for a long time. Sometimes I want don't mind discussing it or answering questions, but sometimes I just don't want to be bothered. Unfortunately for me I can't really hide my hair so I just have to put up with the constant questions whether I'm in the mood for them or not.

I've worked in luxury retail for more than a year at two different employers. Opaque pantyhose and long sleeves are necessary for much of it, and at one of the jobs I was required to wear a silk glove on one hand to cover a finger tattoo. They were incredibly picky about visible piercings aside from single lobes, but since Covid and masks-- nose piercings can be a lil secret! It was encouraging to know that it is indeed possible to hold a job in a very conservatively dressed place.
