  • Guild Wars 2 has a long history of great content and fantastic gameplay but of late, Secrets Of The Obscure has kinda missed its mark. Myself included I haven't been that excited about the game and It calls into question, will Janthir Wilds Be A big enough change? or is it more of the same?

My GW2 concern is the in-game LFG system, it needs to be updated. Currently, most active GW2 players reach a point where everything naturally migrates to discord servers/static groups, basically far away from public groups. Meanwhile, on the NA server, the in-game LFG system tends to be empty/inactive. Folks have moved away from using it as their primary method for assembling groups.
Let's say you just finished work and have limited time, maybe only a few hours to play. Think how much more likely you’d be to play GW2 if the LFG had a modern, clean, organized UI, if it was faster to use, if it had automation tools to add/locate other interested players, and if the commander had more tools/visibility for managing their group.
Helping players easily connect with one another to complete the MMO's game content is vital stuff - this shouldn't be overlooked, imo.

Something that should be mentioned is that Anet came out with an article that talked about what they learned from the SotO expansion, what was the good/bad of it, and what they're doing to improve for the future expansions. Because Anet has been open about their process I'm holding off on my judgement about the game's direction until I experience the new expansion.

I see SOTO suffering from the same problems Living World Season 1 and Heart of Thorns suffered from: Basically it's a rough start for something new to ANet. Chances are they tried to change up some teams, programming schedules, dynamics, etc and what we got from this "measured release of expansion" is what we got.
The writing has been on the wall since Living World. This company has a problem making an expansion while also trying to fight off the lack of content that makes players just scream "Dead Game" the moment something doesn't release every month. Yes that was hyperbole, yes I'm saying it tongue in cheek, no I'm also not being hyperbolic, some folks do act that way. They tried something new with the Icebrood Saga when they thought GW2 was done for after LW Season 4, we all saw how that panned out. So I think what they're trying to do is have their expansion team do that instead of that B team they had.
I'm going to give Janthir Wilds a shot because typically their second swing at something gets better, plus I loved the idea of Janthir. I've always wanted it in an expansion, yes this is cope. I want my Janthir, hush. I am also curious about the Homestead, it's been over 1,000 years but we finally might get some home node worth working on. I fear it'll be like all the other Hub City spots or that dirty Elonian cave I forgot its name, but maybe it'll be more useful. Even if it's just "Guild Decorating for one person" that's something better than what we have now.

  • @tangentkatz
    @tangentkatz 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +13

The spear mechanics look interesting, but I'm most curious about the map design since GW2's main strength (imo) is the open world. As someone who came from FFXIV to GW2, the story has never been a draw for me. I just really enjoy the MMO feel of doing a lot of things as a group, in an open world, with interesting traversal. It's strongest where FFXIV is weakest, which makes it a great game to balance out FFXIV burn out.

  • @dank7314

I play gw2 very on and off. It's a casual mmo where it's easy to leave but also easy to come back into, and I greatly appreciate that aspect of the game. I think that's what makes gw2 a surviving game. It won't ever really have the highest concurrent players like wow but it'll serve as a home that players can always come back to. I think gw2 will survive for a long time, it's casual friendliness being the main reason.
I enjoy gw2 story and lore and EoD wrapped up a DECADE long story. The dragons were gw2's identity for a long time and now they have to find a new one. I thought SOTO would introduce that new long term story identity, but it didn't. I was actually pleasantly surprised by that and enjoyed SOTO as a stand alone event. As a lore enjoyer, I liked that they finally explained what happened to zojja, explored aspects of other races like the mursaat, dwarves, seers, and the new kryptis. So maybe the story of SOTO wasn't as exciting but I found things to like about it. I suspect Janthir Wilds will go more into explaining background lore for the White Mantle and what not so I'm still looking forward it.

I personally took a break because of Anet balancing decision. The kind of balancing where they would say X class deals too much damage so we are changing the numbers but another class dealing the same damage or better is instead left untouched or buffed. The kind of balancing where they state they will buff unused skill /trait to encourage people to use them only for them to buff skill that are already being used. In the meantime there are new games that are being released, new content that are being added to old game so I am less and less encouraged to return to the game

I was 100% all in with the actual content of the expansion *before* the patches. I think the problem is that the post SOTO patches showed some poor signs, specifically the content design. When you have bad meta events, mid maps and boring repeatable content; ALL things that GW2 has always been known for being good at, you know you have a problem.
The story for me was actually good until the patches too. SOTO was quite good story wise, but the follow up and travel to Nayos was like "Huh?"
There is good in this expansion but there is far more learning opportunity here than good things.

  • @Skyztamer

I've only been playing GW2 somewhat consistently for about two years now, but across all the stories SoTO's campaign was the first in which I got legitimately bored progressing because of the quest design.
So much so that it was the first time I stopped doing the story when it was new (the second update) and just went back to working on other in-game goals.
I'm honestly not expecting much from Jathnir Wilds story, but given that some of the major concerns about SoTO's pacing were addressed in a blog post awhile back; perhaps JW will have potential to be fine (hard to say if any future expansion's story will truly be "good" again with a single year time constraint).

I think the problem with soto was how all the content was built around farming for the legendary armor. Thats the main issue. Even though its an open world armor set, it never really was the main focus of all the other expansions. It was an option for people who wanted to pursue it. But other than the easier skyscale mount and just trying to farm up metas for gold ( which other previous living world seasons and expansions are better at the moment ) , they didnt really add anything for those currencies to be used for or have any other cool unlockables for more diversity in the content.

new weapons do not achieve this.
I feel progress in the story, but I dont feel like my character developed or got an upgrade in anyway besides adding pathfinder to the title.

I agree with you partly on ff14 having a better story. Like just looking at the writing itself, then ff14 clearly blows gw2 out of the water. But gw2 always did a pretty good job at presenting you the story. Making you Play and experience the story rather than just read it. And the maps with their long meta chains and all the side content like strikes and fractals expand on that world, rather than just being a set for the story. FF14 has so many moments in the main story where you just boringly read whats happening, rather than actually experiencing it first hand. Alot of filler dialogue to flesh out the story and when you do get your hands on the game, its very repetitive dungeons that follow the same wall to wall formula since ages. And since the dungeons always must come at every odd level, they sometimes feel a little forced and out of place too.

And just llike you I thought it felt more like a paid living world season than a full expansion. Their old model is much better using living world as filler DLC to set up expansions. In terms of lore Janthir wilds looks promising we get to see the white mantle back and its focused in centrel Tyria. Also map wise im getting real tired of drizzlewood meta focused maps. I want hearts and random events that arent tied to a meta. It gives the player more meaning to explore the world. The shining blade activates "the commander" for a mission that leads to Janthir.
SOTO had a few leads to previous characters, but it was purely a side story. The role of the commander had a feel like Indiana jones and the last crusade- the storyline would have progressed the same way if the commander, now the "wayfinder" wasn't a part of it.

Nope. Played the entirety of GW1 last year before me and the wife moved on to GW2... and while we loved moments of GW2's story, it had major problems with tone, pace, and player agency.
GW1 didn't have the deepest writing. But what it got right was that the writing, for the most part, reinforced the heroic journey the players go on - it existed entirely to motivate you to press on across the world. Even when the writing wasn't particularly great, the journey felt epic.
GW2 was very, very self-indulgent and almost constantly told the player "Wait here. Go there. Stand at this position. Listen to this NPC. Say these words. Have these feelings."
That last one isn't even a joke - when you get to that bit in End of Dragons, and the game is like... here, go and place some flowers on a memorial to a character that we're telling you that you have feelings about. No, there is no option to say you have no feelings about them; you have feelings, because the script says so. Oh, don't remember who that character is? Don't care, we literally put the words in your mouth.
And it only got worse over time. When we reached Secrets of The Obscure, and we had to listen to Zojja say the word "me" like 20 times after a major character had been killed off, and our objective was literally to go and listen to her whining, we actually gave up on the game.

I just got done with Path of Fire for the first time to get access to those mounts. While not on par with Final Fantasy 14's storytelling, it was better than your typical MMO. I mean that's not saying much, though. I was more taken in with the scenery and some locations and the exploration was a lot of fun. Not the Desolation, however. That place can pick a direction and leave.

So I’m still rather early into my SotO experience in regards to the story but I will say one thing that concerned me right out of the gate and something that did cause me to put a pause on GW2 for a bit is the lack of returning characters and I know off rip people’s reaction to that is gonna be there’s no more dragons so why bring Dragon’s Watch back and in a way you’d be right and I do appreciate the attempt to put more focus on your character but the thing is these are characters that have become integral to the DNA of the game because of the Saga with the Dragons and the bonds you formed with them over the course of that story so not having any of them pop up kinda makes the story of SotO feel a little empty

I'm mainly keen on Janthir Wilds due to the fact that my eyes need a color-palette change from looking consistently at the light-grayish maps from the final Soto maps.
It's no surprise Soto was a letdown, and you are not alone in regards to your dislike of Soto, as many have the similar opinion.
I hope A-net looks at Soto and takes all the criticism and learns and adapts from it going forward.
In regards to FF14, personally I feel like FF14 has a great story, but what it lacks is the 'Massive Multiplayer' aspect to MMORPGs.
It's more of a glorified JRPG with a focus on instanced content. GW2 spreads its focus to every aspect evenly.
My main MMORPG has always been WoW, yet I always come back to GW2 due to the "MMO" aspect of the huge map wide events.
It's awesome to see WoW take a page out of GW2 and have similar large-scale events in WoW too.
I have my eye out for Throne and Liberty coming in September, as there's a focus on large-scale events in that game as well.
Anyways, good luck to you, enjoy yourself.

Hot take maybe, but I think the previous way Anet handled expansions worked better for me personally.
One hefty chunck you could take your time with.
The content draught was there, but you could focus on other things. Which prevented you from burning out.
    Tldr:
PoF: a glass of whiskey once a week.
SotO: half a glass of beer every day .

It’s hard for most MMOs to compete with FF14 in terms of the way it presents it story. The way the games gives you cutscenes, epic solo que moments, how it ties the dungeon in, and then how wraps it up with an epic trial is unmatched.
It’s so good that main quest in other games leave a lot to be desired. Outside of FF14. The only other two that comes close is ESO and WoW
Also the last GW2 expansion lacks excitement as well as this one imo. No new classes, playable races, elite specializations. I think that’s what people really want. It makes what’s called and expansion feel more like DLC. Especially when competitors are giving you so much more with their expansion.

  • @Dan-sc2pi
    @Dan-sc2pi 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

A couple of thoughts I think are important to consider:
1.) It's probably unfair to compare SotO to the other expansions... it was developed faster, was sold for about 50% less, and was identified by ANet as a mini-expansion. Whatever criticisms or accolades you give it, it is truly more like the beginning of Icebrood Saga or like Living World Season 2 than Path of Fire or Heart of Thorns.
2.) ANet did put out a blog post detailing what they claim to have learned from SotO and much of it highlighted the negative aspects of the story... They stated they were too ambitious and didn't give their narrative the space to breathe, needing to get to the major plot points too quickly (this is my summary, not their exact words). Hopefully they take those lessons to heart.
I am cautiously optimistic as well; I think JW will give us much insight into how this new designer team (who have really only been in place since End of Dragons) will iterate and improve the game.

I didn't mind the wizards vault because it was a nice catch up for newer players especially with the legendary weapons kits. But overall, the story, regions, etc, not a big fan. Also most of the meta events for me anyway were not that fun compared to the prior ones in other expansions. I just sort of fell out of it, went from logging in and playing to logging in for the vault, to logging in for a few daily astral acclaim to just, not logging in.
Will I return? Probably, not sure when. But I probably will. For Janthir wilds? Maybe! Spears to me are not hyping me that much, maybe for the warrior it makes sense, but as a Reaper? Not as stoked. I think the major pull for me right now to play again is continue working on my legendries, specifically Exordium which consumes much of my time.

Pretty new player started Jan 1 this year and from my perspective after watching the many GW2 influencers and playing from start to current I still have tons of content to experience. Seems to me SoTO was a half ass story that was only meant to have 3-6 months' worth of content for the old dogs and just enough for news guys like me to get lil hooked. Started working towards the obsidian armor and I got to say this game is really fun when you're just running around aimlessly but as soon as I try focusing on the legendary grind I just want to quit and do something else. Raids were ok, strikes were really fun and fractals for me were meh, PvP and WvW are tons of fun even without a Warclaw. But in September it won't matter because Space Marine 2 is coming out I won't be doing anything else for another 6 months to a year.

  • @RazerTNT
    @RazerTNT 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

Well I know that the story is not that good, for example some cool characters imho are basically just introduced and then suddenly dropped, but I also think that people fail to consider is the whole packet.
Soto introduced pve legendary armor, rifts, convergences with different bosses, 2 strikes (with 3cm, and finally a title that ppl are really interested to get), 1 fractal (with cm), 1 new weapon for each class (finally warriors can heal), relics (anet didnt even dump on ppl that did have the legendary runes already and directly gifted the legendary to them) with fun (the forbidden word) side quests to unlock the new one, new skills and abilities for the skyscale and maps that can take full advantages from the flying mounts, new adventures/minigames, 3 maps and 1 hub to explore with more achievments, 4 new metas, new convience vendors to sell useless currency like the prismactite crystals and such, the wizard vault with legend kits, guild hall pvp setting and new decorations and finally wvw alliance. On top of this, small items like new minis, emotes and fishes spot, new very good UI convenience stuff and all the balance patches and bug fixes (I know many ppl don think that devs fix anything, but they do (in about 3months xD) if you actually report the bugs).
So yeah "story not good" but overall a solid expansion with an eye on don't forgetting the old maps too. So am I concerned about Janthir Wilds? Not really, at least we will have just more of the same mmo we like, probably with a small spin to test our reactions.

Janthir Wilds has me... intrigued, at best. I dont have high hopes; they haven't *really* told a good story since base GW2, with the possible exceptions of generous chunks of Path of Fire and small bits of Living World Season 1. And even then, no part of Guild Wars 2 (perhaps GW1 too) can touch FF14 Heavensward on a story level.
What Janthir Wilds feels like is ArenaNet finally taking time to address some long-requested things, namely spears, housing, and White Mantle, but doing so in a way that requires the absolute minimum effort from their team. It is one weapon type, for all classes, using skins that already exist. They're not interested in putting out "amazing", their goal is "good enough". Which is unfortunate.

I'm excited about the homestead and I hope it's more of Drizzlewood Coast and less SotO. I think SotO is not particularly bad but not good either. Has been a common theme for me ever since PoF where I just don't like the characters. The story telling has been on a steady decline as well. It's always the same pseudo-"heroic" bs. I'd like to be just an adventurer again, not a different flavor of "the chosen one". Anet is trying so hard to make everything so high stakes but can't create any tension. The constant breaks of "complete nearby events to help a story NPC" doesn't keep up the momentum of the story either.
I didn't mind the Kryptis as a whole (kinda like the Destroyer in EotN) but the whole story arc around Dagda, Peitha and Eparch, forming an alliance with them, etc was just lame imo. Why can't we just get a cool enemy, strikes, raids, .. whatever (repeatable content) and instead are constantly bombarded with politics..

Even some of the diehard fans I know are wary of the new expansion, so I agree that they can't really afford to have another "meh" expansion, *especially* being released in the same season as Gold Road, Dawntrail, and The War Within. They'll get buried, and people might be tempted to try other things with the deluge of other high quality expansions coming out (if they're good, or course)
I'll be waiting to see what friends report about the story, as that's critically important to me. If it's actually great? I'll come back and give it a try again. Otherwise... I might not pick it back up for the foreseeable future.
The trailer, sadly, didn't give me a lot of faith in the xpac either :(

NGL GW2 achieved something i didnt think was possible, make a content more forgettable than IBS. granted, IBS was free if u logged while it was being released since it followed the old LWS system so pretty much the player base didnt make their complaint very vocal other than some memes i guess. But SoTO was a paid content that really under deliver in every aspect, it started really good but the cadence of content delivery, the writing and map optimization really wrecked the reputation of ANET, FFS i dont even want to go to amnytas ever again (lets not talk about the wizard tower hub).

I'm also tired of the 'here's the new map meta same as the old map meta" with the same gold-per-hour overall w/ minor changes.

I didn't expect too much out of soto because it was their first try at that. Janthirs will show us if they can deliver or not. overall, soto had a few great things: Weapon master training was great and it opened up a lot of builds an a lot of the new weapons were great, too. I think the strikes are fantsstic and i personally like convergences and also the new Armor since i don't have legenderies yet. What Anet is currently promising looks like they understood their assigment. If the quality is there, I will be very glad to go forward with this model

Agreed and I think that's why i give them humility, like you tried something new and it didn't stick so let's see what else we can do to really resonate with the player base

i won't be playing the new expansion. They burned me with SotO. That was their last chance and i'm just tired that housing is already tied to a mastery and probably gated behind other masteries you have to complete first. Plus i can already see, that all the good furniture will be in the cash shop. And sorry, i just don't like the "what content gives the most gold oer hour to convert into gems" playstyle anymore. I want to play the game and unlock stuff ingame. FF XIV has also spoiled me when it comes to side content without jumping through hoops (granted i'm perfectly happy with a small house, that even on my Server (one of the all-time full ones) was quite easy to get). GW2 was a perfect side MMO for a while, but i rather play something else now.

I cant really talk about story because I left after Icebrood Saga, but if my time in FF14 has taught me anything is that player housing is a big topic and people love it. If GW2 pulls if off correctly to the point that players can truly let their imagination run wild, this could be great feature. Of course, its not for everyone...

I play this game casually the real problem in this game is a large majority of the community are sensitive as fuck and complain about every little thing in the game. Like so many complaints about a game they put crazy hours in. My only complaint with arenanet is if y’all gonna add content fix the bugs they’re causing bugs rushing this expansion gonna fuck the game up. Gw2 players are hard to make happy

  • @EyesOfGehenna

tbh, this might be a hot take but I've never really been impressed with the GW2 story. I found the core game so horrible that I ended up playing the story missions with the sound turned off. HoT was a lot better but for me it's always been sort of there and throughout the expansions and lw stories, I just really never connected to the characters in the story. So in essence I don't really care what happens to them. Long story short: I don't play GW2 for the story, so I'm just excited about the gameplay features of JaWi like spears and housing.

New classes is always the banner for a new expansion. Weapon proliferation is only relatable to existing players.even worse than soto is that this expansion has only 1 weapon. Topped up with the announcement of gw3 and the really bad patches between expansions, it looks worse every next update.

SotO writting makes IBS look good.
They had me interested in the begining with this eldritch horror, but after Nayos it all crumbled into a very generic, very human drama motivated story, very much mundane in all aspects but the form of the characters and in all aspects it was just weak.
Who ever was at the helm of story and narrative during HoT all the way to LS4 is clearly long gone as the writting in this expansion is amateurish at best.
Sadly i think JW will not change much, nor is the following expansion after. Hopefully they are already actually reorganizing for the 4th expansion of this new "cadence" cuz if this is what they had planned, it aint it good enough chief.

As far as what i think? Im not preordering this expansion. SoTo left a bad taste for me. The ending to EOD was terrible. It was like Game of thrones all over. That last season sucked. They try to make it too grindy for Everything. The story was really bad in soto. It was very rushed nothing was fleshed out and after a month of play i haven't even logged in to finish the expansion since the last of it unlocked. I hope that they do better.
