The best thing about this car is that it’s affordable for a lot of people. Also it’s a very stylish, modern, comfortable, sporty car all in one. Couldn’t ask for much more. The only thing I would say is after a few years be prepared to experience some technical issues. Also, the infotainment system isn’t the greatest. The ride comfort is perfect in my opinion but some may find it to firm. Really not a bad car in my opinion as long as you’ve got money left over in your pocket once you’ve bought the car. I was extremely happy with mine it never failed to put a smile on my face. Especially when in sports mode. Great car 😀 Better than it’s rivals in my opinion. The Audi A1 is very dull, the BMW 1 series is ugly. The Golf, once again is boring. I would certainly choose the A class over any other. It just has that cutting edge and exciting element to it that it’s rivals lack.
As someone who drives a W176 on a daily basis in city traffic, I can tell you that the steering isn’t bad at all. It’s comfortable to steer with one hand, but also precise enough for me to make some pretty quick and tight maneuvers in rush hour traffic. Highway performance is also pleasing. The other negative aspects you’ve pointed out can also be easily overlooked, and won’t bother you in the long run. What might end up bothering you is the 7G-DCT transmission, which isn’t in any way, shape, or form proper for city traffic, or ideal when combined with a small engine. It can be jerky at times. It is somewhat difficult to play with when climbing up a curb to park on the sidewalk. In the end, you learn how to use it properly by fine-tuning your right foot and the amount of pressure it exercits on the throttle. The fact that it rides so low also makes it not quite ideal for roads that have potholes. I’ve done, in the past 6 months, more swerving than I’ve ever hoped I would have to. Mine has the R16 wheels of the Style line, but shocks can still be felt due to the stiff suspension. It’s a great car, but it’s certainly not for beginners, or for those that just buy a Merc because it’s a Merc.
Agreed I just picked up a 2016 A180d and it feels totally premium and looks amazing as well. I think the hate comes from Matts biased negative tone about the car
Kavin Hood it’s ok for average heights and it can seat 2 people comfortably I would say, but if you’re really tall and you wanna seat 3 it will start to get a little rough.
My mum has a 2014 mercedes a 200 CDI, and for what it is for the money she paid, it's pretty rubbish. 15000 plus a 2005 vauxhall astra (in 2017) for a car without parking sensors, sat nav, a reversing camera, and electrically folding mirrors is almost criminal
Rian Robinson yeah it's a little expensive after extras compared to something like a golf. A shame that some of these options aren't standard for a 2014 car at this price point
The biggest compliment I can give Mat and Carwow is that they entice me to watch videos of cars that I otherwise wouldn't be interested in. Always been a fan of these reviews guys.

I really like the A class. It is a massive improvement from the 2004 and up models. It might be a little expensive but you get what you pay for, if you buy this it would be money well spent.
Explain to me why your carbuyer review of the a class when it first came out was all bout how well it drove, how nice it was and how good the engines were. In this one all you seemed to do was criticise it. ??
I disagree. I ditched a A3, in favour of my new A200d AMG Line. Its a much better drive. More driver feedback through the wheel, better handline when pressing on. WAY better Dual Clutch gearbox, and its faster with better MPG. PS: The AMG Line has much better materials on the Dash. I did have a A180d Sport for a week and the dash looked cheap in comparision.
This review is not entirely accurate. Yes the Sport and SE trims do not handle that well. However the AMG Line drives like a very different car. Some people think the AMG Line is just a body kit, but its not. You also get. What you get apart from "The looks". Mercedes branded brakes with Drilled disks. AMG springs and shocks (AMG Sport comfort springs). AMG Dynamic Suspension system. If optioned. AMG Line Specific gearbox & engine programming. AMG Direct Steer sports steering. AMG Line DCT's also have Launch Control. (100ms shift times). Inside you also get AMG sports seats and a very nice Flat Bottomed steering wheel. I do 1000 miles a week in mine and absolutely love it. Mine is the A200d DCT, and does 65 to 68mpg average.
I got a 180a se. its 6-7 out of 10. The ride is slightly harsh and noisy but its a nice car in general. plus points are the std spec is higher than most, leather seats, rev camera, sat nav and 80mpg, I also think its the best looker in the class. I got it for £175pm lease and couldn't find anything anywhere near that for the same spec, saying that I'm glad I didn't buy and can change after 2 years (I suppose that speaks volumes).
one more thing! On bigger rims, the car is not only crashy over potholes but also VERY noisy inside. The tyres roar is omnipresent even at low speed, much more intrusive than in an 1 series or A3.
When you say "competitors are more practical" does that include the BMW 1 series? That would be fun to know, as the Merc is FWD and BMW is ditching the magnificent RWD in favour of practicality. I really don't think the beemer is unpractical enough to ditch RWD and risk their image and driving dynamics.
I test drove the A180 AMG Line and I thought the material quality inside was more upmarket than a top spec Honda or a Mazda. The build quality is certainly on the same level with its German rivals.
My dad got this as my first car in 2015 it was alright but i would only ever get a higher model after 5 months of having it i sold it got a mini with full spec i love it so overall a good first car or run around but not a forever car
I had one of these facelift A-class as a loan car while my car was serviced. They actually have me one of the top spec cars, AMG Line with lots of options (I think it was A180). And it was seriously a sh*t car for how much it costs. The interior quality isn't great at all, the new Astra or mk7 Golf is better. Also, the A-class doesn't feel as well thought out as you'd expect from a German car. The ride is harsh and yet handling isn't great too, as mentioned in the review. It's also quite noisy inside the cabin. And the infotainment system is crap. If you're not a "badge snob", get yourself a well-specced Astra or Golf instead and you'll get a much better car. If you can spend extra, get the facelifted A3 if you need comfort; or a manual petrol 1-series if you want something fun to drive.
or better still, get a 1 series while it is still RWD, with an 8 speed auto box. Drives much better and is much quiter than this econo-box from Mercedes. BTW, I had the same experience as you, getting an A180 d while the C was serviced. It was really disappointing...
well to put it in its simplest form it has the same engine as the clio and a nissan micra 1.5 DCI/CDI wouldn't pay a penny for that ( cant afford it anyway , but even if i did i wouldn't ) .
I have the A200d AMG Line (16 plate) and is a brilliant car. In the video they have picked the bottom of the range here and looks awful. the AMG Line with night pack and 2 litre is a very good car.
In Europe diesel cars sell very well. Lower taxes, better fuel economy, more reliable engines. In fact in the UK the price of petrol and diesel isn't even that different (In germany diesel is quite a lot cheaper).
Fantastic! without a doubt a best car reviewer on TH-cam. I don't get why he said the Mercedes manual transmission isn't very good I've had pretty much every C Class that's came out and hoping to get the Cla and all of them are fantastic the shifts are so fast and the biting point is very low down on the clutch so east to use.
I have tried both the A180 and a 118i BMW and yes, the 118i is far superior in drive quality, but the A class has a significantly better interior and more driver aids as standard.
Mat, love all your work, but may I ask who on Earth gives a dime on the rear seat space, especially for the third passenger?! How many owners drive more than themselves in these cars?
Beware of the 1.5 diesel six speed box I recently repaired a CLA that had a broken first gear selector fork, one side had sheered at its root,at 40,000 miles I put it down to either lack of mechanical sympathy or a dodgy part. Then yesterday I had a 2017 A 180 cdi that if you selected first and released the clutch the transmission was obviously locking up and causing stalling. After a quick look it was clear that the box had been out and apart already at some time, the car has of now only covered 37,000 miles, dismantling revealed an already replaced first gear selector that had also snapped at its root and buried it's self between the gear clusters,I'm not columbo but I'd bet my house on the original snapping also,my tester mentioned the poorly designed slippers on the forks but it seems the fork snaps long before they even remotely start wearing, the replacement selector is like for like, good old MB! so I would guess it won't be the last time that that box is coming out! I'm guessing it's MB's own unit as it is mounted to an adapter plate to fit renaults 1.5 engine.

@joshua L not sure about the 1.5 engine in the Mazda? heard not that great and MPG poor on Motorways? i like the look of the Volvo V40 but think the bigger Volvo's look a tad better and their engines are made by either PSA or Ford so rather just get a Focus and also not sure if it will be as good to drive as it looks? at the moment the Focus for the good drive as i use to have a older one or go for the Golf for a more relaxed drive and comfortable long journeys and better build quality never had a VW but the Golf has always looked liked it has been made very well.
+Joshua L Yes ,the V40 is the best premium hatch and the D4 engine is benchmark the only problems are backseat space (not as good as Golf, still better than A class/1 series) .Also Mazda 3 and Alfa Romeo Giulietta are 2 of the better premium hatchbacks.
Anuj Naik I thought the V40 is better for back seat space compared to the Merc. Not as good as the A3 or golf. I haven't driven the new D4 engine but from what I've heard its excellent!
I still don't understand why he mentions door bins a lot. I'm not too sure if you would reconsider your purchase due to small door bins. Just a question
Try it it's a brilliant website and you get the best deals, much more then the dealer would offer you if you haggled but as soon as your in contact I guess you could haggle more I use it and there is nothing else like it, it's Brilliant!
is it possible if you guys could possibly get a review on the A180 D SE please!. there's not a single review of the car and I'm really interested in it! love your videos keep up the good work
The road noise (or ambient noise, since it's sound recording we're dealing with) gives the feeling you have a window open. Mat's got a body mike, which you'd think would help, but the background din is somewhere between a rumble and a brewing storm. Or is it just a CarWow audio issue?
My driving school had a similar A-Class and I didn't really like it. It's alright, but nothing I'd personally buy. It's already a rather small car and the interior does indeed feel quite claustrophobic, the rear window is basically useless when reversing and looking over your left shoulder is also pointless because the B-pillar will block your view. It also felt quite cheap. What's also really annoying is the fact that the gas pedal was so far to the right that the plastic covers down in the foot region were sometimes blocking me from using the gas pedal, depending on which shoes I was wearing. Over all not too great.
Hmm i think the comparison from the picture in the beginning of the clip is the one from the AMG body kit which is still available on the 2017 model...
I was just thinking and the Infiniti Q30 which she's the same underpinnings is an excellent alternative to this. It has a much better quality interior, plush ride, better handling and much better tuned gearbox.
Please can the volume be increased when recording? I find it difficult to hear even with full volume on my laptop. Also, the sound suddenly increases or decreases. Thanks
high belt line, lower roof line, makes the hatch back look good in its class. and i agree with you Mat, the facelifted doesnt look improved, more like mecedes saying 'hey, hold up there, we're gonna develop a new A class soon, so buy these for now!'
I drove a pre-facelift example in driving school and got my licence, which is great knowing what a piece of rubbish that car was. It was cramped, full of cheap plastic, had a terrible clutch, its gear shifter was often getting stuck and the steering wheel was giving me no information about what front wheels were doing. I really expected more from a Mercedes.

Tried to buy an A45 from carwow twice and both times they never got back to me. Waste of time.
Hi, BlindingBlizzard. We only want to work with the best dealers so it’s disappointing to hear that. If you contact us at help@carwow.co.uk, we'll look into it for you. Hope you enjoyed the video :)
+carwow is the transmission only automatic? or is manual available?
rob DT there isn’t a manual
I’ve had this car for 3 years and it’s got amazing handling trust me
@joshua L not sure about the 1.5 engine in the Mazda? heard not that great and MPG poor on Motorways? i like the look of the Volvo V40 but think the bigger Volvo's look a tad better and their engines are made by either PSA or Ford so rather just get a Focus and also not sure if it will be as good to drive as it looks? at the moment the Focus for the good drive as i use to have a older one or go for the Golf for a more relaxed drive and comfortable long journeys and better build quality never had a VW but the Golf has always looked liked it has been made very well.
for me personally I'd buy the volvo V40 as I think all things considered its the best premium hatchback.
I haven't driven the new D4 engine but from what I've heard its excellent!
this car looks so good
So glad i saw this review.
Can you show how to open the middle storage boxes.
I still don't understand why he mentions door bins a lot. I'm not too sure if you would reconsider your purchase due to small door bins. Just a question
i tried acessing your website to get a deal on this car and i couldnt it was saying the page was down....?????
+philip nzuki try again. Let us know of it doesn't work this time.
thanks lemme check it out again
Just go to a dealer and you get a similar deal...and most certainly better service.
Try it it's a brilliant website and you get the best deals, much more then the dealer would offer you if you haggled but as soon as your in contact I guess you could haggle more I use it and there is nothing else like it, it's Brilliant!
I just bought one 2015/16 automatic 16 petrol. How many mpg should it give you? Anyone can speak from experience? Thanks
how’s your exper with it so far?
@@jessejaja5322 38 litres 400 km.
I have a 2017 a180d and through winter it got 40-45 mpg extra urban and around 65mpg motorway journeys 👍
The infotainment link is wrong, takes you to the Lexus RC 😐
old style bumper I like more...agree
My dad used to have an A220d but he got rid of it after 4 months because it was so crap! He now drives a 2.0 tdi A3 which is far better
Any chance for a WRX or Sti review?
No
3:12 "stupidly large phone" 😂😂😂
Your reviews are always onpoint, and fun to watch!! Nicely done Mat.
Review the Alfa Romeo Giulia PLEAASE!
is it possible if you guys could possibly get a review on the A180 D SE please!. there's not a single review of the car and I'm really interested in it! love your videos keep up the good work
People are only interested in this car because of the badge, sad, So many better cars out there at this price point.
Not true. I have replied to others in comments below.
You can tell that when you see their drivers, all desperate wannabe show offs 😂
@Joshua L
Said the guy desperately trying to get his dickish point over.
your the one who seems desperate !
Agree a VW Golf, Vauxhall Astra or Ford Focus for my next car, would not be seen dead in this or an Audi A1 or BMW one series.
The road noise (or ambient noise, since it's sound recording we're dealing with) gives the feeling you have a window open. Mat's got a body mike, which you'd think would help, but the background din is somewhere between a rumble and a brewing storm. Or is it just a CarWow audio issue?
Despite the numerous negative points I would still pick this over the BMW never mind the A3...Seems like a desirable car
Not sure what the general reliability is like, but my A class has been in the garage for a week
I love that there is no useless shifter or hand break in the central console...... taking up space
It's a shame we can't get this in Canada. We would love a budget Mercedes-Benz here. Same with the Bmw 1 series hatchback.
Keeping up with the jones springs to mind
1.5 diesel is made my renault...

you can edit your posts on youtube if you've made an error :)
Really? By Renault! Thats good news! I dont think anyone knew
livc444111 but the other engines are merc built...but reunalt engine in a merc...really?
Suberakan Xavier a lot of manufacturers are combining forces to save on development costs.
Why wont you test the sound systems
Another plus is that hold it's value a lot better than others.
Still, rather drive the 1-series
This guy has an isofix fetish
You may talk again as soon as you have kids.
Sirion well said sir
Why did you use the the 180 you should have used the a250
Literaly visibility in Mercedes cars, is *-10*/10....
Is the engine noise level a little bit higher than in a BMW 120d?
i have a vw golf gti mk7 performance pack pro nav leather adaptive chassis control should i change to a bmw 120i what do you think matt?
Hmm i think the comparison from the picture in the beginning of the clip is the one from the AMG body kit which is still available on the 2017 model...
New style. I hope we get this in the U.S of A. Since the CLA isn't doing well here compared to Audi's A3
Ive always wondered why you guys dont get these cool hatches
Deffo 5'9
I own an A250 and its great!
Why don't they build an A classes for USA ?
Hey Mat. I am ur fan in Australia. Can u do a car review in CLA shooting brake if it is possible. Just wondering.
Could you fit a springer spaniel and a sprocker in the boot? I currently have a VW golf which has plenty of room, looking to buy the A180 sport? TIA
Rented this car once in England, absolutely hated it. Got a backache just by driving it for 3 days
Why is it that when Matt checks the mpg, the car is doing 0 km/h?
I was just thinking and the Infiniti Q30 which she's the same underpinnings is an excellent alternative to this. It has a much better quality interior, plush ride, better handling and much better tuned gearbox.
why is it that the driver is on the other side?
Does the car come with a Tow Eye?
I really hope USA gets this car!
Please can the volume be increased when recording? I find it difficult to hear even with full volume on my laptop. Also, the sound suddenly increases or decreases. Thanks
high belt line, lower roof line, makes the hatch back look good in its class. and i agree with you Mat, the facelifted doesnt look improved, more like mecedes saying 'hey, hold up there, we're gonna develop a new A class soon, so buy these for now!'
and, sorry Mercs, i didn't buy your A45 AMG two years ago because of that iPad like centre monitor.
Is it expensive?
what if you are runout of the petrols? what then?
I drove a pre-facelift example in driving school and got my licence, which is great knowing what a piece of rubbish that car was. It was cramped, full of cheap plastic, had a terrible clutch, its gear shifter was often getting stuck and the steering wheel was giving me no information about what front wheels were doing. I really expected more from a Mercedes.
Do they have a manual gearbox option?
Yes they do
Sabelo thank you for asking this
Sorry I know I'm late
Well, those who need a big trunk and plenty of room in the back seats, better go for a Renault Scenic. It's bigger and cheaper!
Is the a class the gla?
For someone who talked good on carbuyer about the older a class. Now that hes on his own website carwow, where he can REALLY talk his mind. Matt has absolutely roasted this car XD
Hi there , does anyone know if the standard A class comes with LED lights inside the car (different colour selections)
do a review between the new S5 vs C350 vs 440i PLEASE!
