    Some clarifications -
    I DO hope to make regular videos about sailing Tally Ho. I just won't have a public live-tracking beacon on the boat.
    Whichever way I go, the first major voyage back to the UK will involve many stops and explorations and adventures, and could take a year or more. I hope I will be able to regularly release videos throughout.
    GPS etc - I haven't made any decisions yet, just pondering. But remember, 40 years ago everyone was navigating traditionally - the ocean hasn't changed that much since then, and those guys weren't landing on rocks very often, either. My point is that there's a big difference between a trained navigator with good equipment and up-to-date charts, and the old vessels of yore that would get shipwrecked so (apparently) often.

    • @oikkuoek
      @oikkuoek 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I personally urge you to navigate traditionally, but I also would definitely like to see it, and study from your experiences. To me, it seems like the only proper way to sail around the globe, and would love to do something like that in future, but at this moment it seems like an absolute impossibility for several reasons, that I won't clarify here. All and all, would love to see you sail and operate the vessel, and learn from it. Only way for me to do that, is via TH-cam. So, please, keep them videos coming. They are more important to me, and many others alike, than you may realize.

      All power to you, Leo. As you will know but not many others seem to, GPS can be a snare and a delusion for coastal pilotage in places where charted features are plotted in the correct relative positions (to each other) but are wrongly situated relative to Greenwich. I was exploring a few years ago in remote fiords where, for two fiords in particular, there was about 8 cables (nearly a mile) of offset from the coastline as charted to where it actually lay relative to the chart datum (and yes, the GPS was switched to the correct datum). At one point, according to the chart plotter, we were not in the channel, but atop a high mountain.

      @oikkuoek 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Gottenhimfella Also, the poles are shifting, and quite rapidly too. That should affect on the GPS also, while it messes up the basic magnetic compass. The information from those satellites is always corrupted due to the tech vs physics; solar flares, temperature changes, additional particles, etc. so commercial products can never be accurate, due to the nature of the system. That's why I wouldn't rely on it either. It gives you false sense of knowledge, and is actually a hindrance when something happens to the tech.

      You wouldn't be the first channel to not have constant internet, who takes long legs of journeys filming daily and then releasing videos in batches later. There's nothing wrong with that kind of film-while-sailing-and-release-later arrangement.

    I am an old tradesman from a family of tradesman and I grew up listening to my Dad bemoan the loss of so many skills. In the 90's I also worried about what would happen to all that knowledge that was dying off as each generation passed. Then the internet and youtube happened. I think you cant through a spanner in any direction these days without hitting a budding blacksmith, carpenter or fitter and turner. So I am excited about the massive resurgence of skills being championed by Leo and the like. Thank You.

    At 19:12 Leo explains about the emotional delight he gets from being out on his own. I totally understand. I turned 20 in 1970. My wife and I spent the 70's hiking into the wilderness areas of the United States. Cell phones were not available then. Once we stepped-off at the trailhead, we were cut-off from civilization, and on-our-own. It was wonderful. One time we spent 14 days in the wilderness of Isle Royale, in the middle of Lake Superior. BTW most people do not realize that it is pushing the limit of what a person can carry to go 14 days without resupply. (Firs cell phones came on-line in USA in 1983.)

    Many years ago i was skipper/mate on oilfield vessels in Australia's Bass Strait with fully integrated nav systems and a fishing charter boat that had the auto pilot and the GPS coordinated. In both these cases I enjoyed the leisure of watching the boat sail from departure to destination without work from me!!! But in earlier jobs I sailed east across the Great Australian Bight (in an 80yr old Broome Pearling Lugger of similar vintage to Tally Ho), the West Australian coast, Australia to India, Thailand to Gulf of Thailand oil installations using traditional methods and I must agree, the satisfaction of seeing the fairway beacon/buoy on the point of the bow after days at sea was much greater! If I was to go to sea again I would use a modern navigation system combined with the traditional sextant and bearings to keep my mind fresh and challenged! Cape Horn sounds challenging and NW Passage sounds cold! Great video Leo!

      JP Toon - Tally Ho will be entering as Previous Cup Holder! think about that...she’s already won that regatta once before. do yourself a favor & put $100 US down in Las Vegas. that should pay off handsomely when Tally Ho crosses the wire first. Rory McIlroy’s father made a 200 Pound bet that paid out over $170k US for a $340 US wager that his son would win the British Open tournament within 10 years. he was paid a little better than 500 : 1 Odds for that! Incredible. Let’s bet on Leo. He’s will know Talky Ho very well by the time he gets her back to the U.K.

    I can totally see how building wooden a boat is rewarding. I like dabble at all sorts of small projects making things like rustic furniture, carvings and just about anything needing only limited skills. The pleasure of having made something with your own hands is just simply very satisfying. I have always admired skilled craftsmen and their ability to turn raw materials into useful objects. That stuff just fascinates me in the most intense way. What your are doing is extremely glorious. Firstly because of your skill set but especially because of how you have chosen to use it in respecting tradition. You have , so far, given us a glimpse into the history of boat building.
    Thanks for all of that.

They cant see it but Leo,s answer to Fruits of your trade puts it very well, I am pressured to sell my boat recently but I am resisting a lot, some say I am just a cranky old bastard. Well I will be showing this section to them hoping for a bit of understanding as I have not been able to articulate as good as you have. Hi,
    I have been following your build adventures with Tally Ho with great interest. As a boy from about 10 years old, I had the occasional chance to go to work with my Grandad, in those days, late 1950s, things like that were allowed.
    He was a shipwright in HM Dockyard, Portsmouth and for most of his career after apprenticeship he worked on the restoration of HMS Victory.
    He was a great teacher & I was beginning to think about becoming a shipwright too. Unfortunately, my Grandad became ill and died before I was old enough to become an apprentice. Watching you at work has brought back many memories of being around wooden ships with my Grandad and helping him, probably hindering more than helping, but he never complained.
    If I was not a half world away and not allowed to fly, I would certainly try to visit & volunteer.
    Keep up the great work (and videos

    TALLY HO was nearly destroyed running on a reef in Rarotonga. Untold numbers of sailors have died from not knowing they were standing into danger. I understand and fully support your desire to rely primarily on traditional celestial and coastal navigation, but especially in northern Europe, the North Atlantic and the subarctic you can go days without seeing the Sun, Moon or enough stars to get a fix, while currents and tides are making hash of your dead reckoning. I would strongly recommend having GPS capability in reserve, hoping you never need to use it. I would think of it as a backup safety system that reduces the chances that you will ever need your EPIRB.

    A great way to make new friends in the sailing world - look for any local yacht or boat clubs and find out if they have weekly regatta - show up and offer to be deck meat (ballast!) You'll find yourself a seat on a boat, learn a few things, learn a few things NOT to do (like my skipper who crash jibbed a Melges 32' in 40kt winds because he didn't want to run storm sheets!) and make fast friends. This got me a job on a boat, which led to 15 years working in a boat yard, and gigs helping ferry larger craft between harbors.

    As someone that grew up on the sea starting in the mid 70's I can totally relate to what Leo is saying about the use of electronics...
    When I first started we would have to find our fishing gear by dead reckoning by plotting compass courses having to allow for tide and wind drift. usually with no land marks to go by.
    Then radar become more affordable and could be used to make cross references from land features taking a lot of the guess work out of it.
    Eventually we had GPS triangulating of 3 or 4 satellites at a time and then taking up to 1/2 an hour to calculate your position.
    That evolved into the GPS and chart plotters we have today that accurately pin point your position in real time.
    The trouble is when you start to rely on these electronics and they fail you become one of the WTF are we sailors ant that is where things can go south very quick.

    • @daedster1
      @daedster1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! GPS isn't accurate with mapping software at all, how many views of yachts relying on those maps that foundered sadly.
      Often the satellites were not always receivable from the GPS when land masses 'got in the way'

    • @doogssmee9742
      @doogssmee9742 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@daedster1 I strongly disagree ..... GPS its self is very accurate and rarely loses satellite contact ..... the maps that overlay the plotter can often be along way out and can in no way be used for navigating reefs, rocks. passages etc
      But when you plot your own points from actual position they are very accurate and repeatable. For instance often we would have floats cut off by other shipping and could get close enough find a couple of feet of rope floating on slack tide.

    Your explanation of how sailing a boat is similar to standing on the edge of a building and having the exhilaration of living or dying is spot on. Those who climb Mt. Everest also may get this exhilarating (adrenaline rush) feeling, but I view their conquests as relying on guides and other support (Sherpas). Many have dyed climbing Mt. Everest from overconfidence and lack of training and experience. But a sailor who sails the vast oceans must rely totally on their skills and intelligence, to me, it is a much more rewarding and self-gratifying experience.
