- During a year when I have been heavily involved in restoring a house, I have managed to get away in my cruising dinghy just a few times. During one of these her hull became damaged, so that Avel Dro began to leak badly during a planned weekend passage to a little maritime festival at Pors Beac'h.

This admirable enterprise on the North Breton coast organised the trip out to the Ile Vierge. Puffin's Trek hire out cruising dinghies and create organised dinghy tours. They invited me to go and give a talk about dinghy cruising in Avel Dro, even in my execrable French.

Do you want a boat like mine?
Avel Dro is an Ilur designed by François Vivier, and built of clinker plywood by Les Charpentiers Reunis of Cancale in 1994. I bought her in France in 2003 to import her into the UK, and more recently returned her to France again. The design is based closely on the traditional inshore fishing boats of Brittany in the early years of the twentieth century - hence her simple boom-less lugsail rig and lack of a mainsheet horse, (sometimes controversial among my viewers). Although rare in Britain, Ilurs are relatively common in France. Modern Ilurs are however slightly different internally from mine, as they have more built in buoyancy. The name Avel Dro is Breton, Avel = wind, Dro = to turn - so it means a whirlwind.

POST-BREXIT BOAT BUYING
Since January 2021, when Great Britain (but not Northern Ireland) left the European Single Market, if you buy a boat in France or elsewhere in the EU and import it into the UK, you will become liable for VAT and other duties on the import - even if it is second hand. Roger, just want to say....your videos, for me at least, are just so compelling! I'm going thru' some rough times, facing eviction, unemployed, swimming upstream in London & well, to watch you in the rain, with your own obstacles, chores & that wonderful sense that it doesn't have to all be amazing, dazzling, glitzy, showiness like so many things I follow on youtube (& that youtube encourage me to follow!) but simply people talking quietly, in the gloom, going about their day-to-day,....can't describe it but there's a refreshing sense of modesty about it & the metaphor of the boat taking on water struck a chord with me. We're all sinking Roger, in our own special way but you're one of youtube's better creators.

Hiya Tom, Your comments struck a million cords as I've had similar circumstances for many years and it doesn't get better 😂 however real people like yourself and Mr Barnes bring the best out of nothing. A wee bit of advice, Forget London, pack what you can , cut your losses, pitch a tent up here in Scotland once you've spoken to the Farmer,get your head back from wherever it is and as I do think how awful it is for the Ukrainian and palastinian people you will soon realise how lucky we truly are. I could have bitten his hand off for that chunk of cheese n bread until my pension arrived. Good luck to everyone

I just read “We’re all sinking in our own special way” and burst into tears of relief. Ok good. It’s not just me.
Waterproof tape over the area will keep you sailing until you have time to fix it. I sailed a mirror dinghy for a week with a massive split in one of the bottom panels

When I was 9, my parents rented a small sailing boat in Wilmington, NC. It was like a tiny catamaran with a net on top that you sit in, and one of the sides started sinking more and more until the front took on water and the boat flipped. Pretty crazy and I refused to get on a boat for like 5 years after that lol. Thankfully we were in a busy area, so boats rushed to us

Glad the leak is not at the centerboard trunk, much more annoying to repair, this leak should be pretty easy to sort!

So happy to be able see another episode. Your title reminds me of a Berlitz ad a few years ago. A rookie in the German Coast Guard receives a distress call from an American ship. "We are sinking!" "Ziss iss ze German Coast Guard. Vat are you sinking about?" Always a hit with my English language students here in Japan.
Or the BT advert where an Italian guy on the phone cries"Mama Mia" and his mum on the other end of the phone asks "whatsa wrong, son?" And the Italian guy says "Nothing's wrong, I'm just calling to say Hi mum, I'm ere...ere Ina London!" 😂

Glad to see you took time away from your other commitments for the important business of a stress relieving sail (although the stress on “sinking” may have dampened things). It is great to be able to live vicariously while we are in our Australian winter, although your summer did seem a bit elusive. I hope you get time for more outings in the near future.

The inevitable long term result of beaching, drying out, etc. ( long term storage too) I suspect, This is a good thing, as it means Avel Dro is being put to good use & now requires some skilled repair, as one might expect throughout her lifetime. I hope the boat yard performs it's wizardry for you. Just re-reading your book last night too ! Thanks for posting.

I particularly liked your comment about preparing and packing. I used to go camping alot in a van on a Friday after work and rushing about. My wife and I had various pack lists written down but we would always forget a knife, torch, toilet paper, lighter, tin opener pillow or something like this and get a bit fed up for a few minutes before realising there's always improvisation!

Glad to see you out sailing again and I can empathise with your need to relax and be. Sorry about the leak but at least you've been able to identify where it is and it doesn't look too bad. I hope we get a detailed video of the repair by a traditional local craftsman. Scarfing in a couple of new planks would be a good watch. Might even get it done before the summer!! I hope the house is coming along well.

Roger, you probably don’t consider much about how fond, of you and your little Avel Dro, we have become as your YT fans…We have watched you for some time, now, listening to your commentary, picking up on your architecture, learning tips on sailing, packing and contents on your sweet boat…and all about the good sailing along the French coast. If we ache with concern for you and Avel Dro …well, we do. A leak, is another wonderful advantage of sailing a dinghy. Because you stay fairly close to the coast, if necessary, you can self rescue…Thank you for sharing this little piece of your life…from East Tennessee.
Great video, as always. Regarding the mythical legend they call Summer, it appears that the Jet Stream is sitting extremely southerly and right over mid latitude France, and hence we have all this boring cloudy and rainy weather. With little sign of it actually changing soon.

Poor Avel Dro. Banged up but not broken.
In our norwegian clinker boats we're sinking a little all the time. No electric pump, we bail regularly. And we carry with us a couple half kg packets of margerine in case a larger leak opens up underway.

Had a little sail this evening and half way through it died down, paddled back and normally I would be annoyed but I just slowly steadily made my way and soaked it all in.

Your videos are always good. But I have to say I think this is your best production one ever. Cut away shots and lots of extra detail, must have taken a long time to edit so thought I should say. Ty.
The one food I reserve exclusively for camping is bacon. The smell of cooking bacon in the open in the morning is just as good as the taste. I seek out from an independent butcher thick sliced with the rind on stuff that still tastes like bacon use to. The stuff British supermarkets sell is like sliced white bread. I eat very healthily except when camping when I indulge the child in me because it is convenient and fun but short lived. My gut biome takes a shock but recovers soon enough.
France isn’t a good place to buy bacon, sadly.

glad to see you back on the water. One of my pleasures while small boat adventuring is, simple (man) food. Usually from a can that the label has come off years ago.Always a surprise. My last voyage ( not my final voyage) I ate a can of stew that that was Best before 1996. Don't worry a boat that sinking feeling just ads to the excitement of the adventure.
Where is Summer you ask..? Well, it's here in Kentucky, on the Ohio River. So hot and humid as to make nights on the water unpleasant, so it was refreshing to see you bundled up...! As for the tinned beef, yes. Here on this side of the pond we have a 'Dinty Moore Beef Stew' which is the campers friend, both land and sea. I have been known to just put the tin right on the stove. The leak... oh yes. I once had a lapstrake boat, I share your pain. Was thinking while I watched, he's going to take a slice of that cheese and reach under and moosh it in the seam...
