Firmware Update 2.0 For The Canon EOS R5

- OK exciting news for all of you who have bought an Canon EOS R5! Canon just released firmware 2.0 for the EOS R5 and with a name like 2.0 we’re all expecting a a big overhaul of the camera’s functionality. I was super pumped for this update. . . that is until I took a look at the firmware notes. Overall Canon has done a great job updating the R5 over the years. It’s improved significantly since it’s release but it also looks like Canon is done adding any major new upgrades to this camera.

I’ve been struggling with “Err 70” on my R5 since I’ve owned it - fixed, FINALLY.
This update doesn’t affect most but it really meant a lot to me.

I was recently on a shoot in Africa and had the error 70 issue. Very frustrating. Luckily I had the extended warranty and it was covered. Had to do with a shutter issue. Happy whatever other analogous problems are now fixed
Yes, it was a real eye-opener when the error 70 fix came out shortly after my camera was repaired. No one mentioned it was an ongoing issue with many people.
I also experienced Err70 occasionally when shooting in cold mornings without any external peripherals connected. Canon mentioned that the main issue could be the lens or other external hardware that I was using. Hopefully, it is resolved now.

I’ve run into the error code freeze before. Glad we got that fix. Seems like they’re laying the foundation to release some video updates coming soon. Bigger memory card reading and video lense focus ability…
Canon, please give use a clear recording video indicator. A red border around the screen when recording is much desired.
When I first got my Canon R5, I was having the Item #4 issue. After 3 different updates on my Canon R5 they finally fixed the Item #4 issue with the version 2.0. It was so frustrating that once in awhile when I take a photo, the camera would freeze up and the Error Code 70 would show up. After 1 second, the error code would dissapear and the camera would be back to normal. However, the photo that I took before the error 70 happened is not recorded on my CFexpress card. So I have to take the picture all over again to have it recorded in the CFexpress card. This was very annoying when taking photos of a person or a group of people and the error 70 code happens and I have to tell the folks that I have to take their picture all over again.

Hello Vasko, In my opinion, Canon received the most serious firmware update with version 1.5.0. (01-Dec-2021)In this update, vehicle and motorcycle recognition features have been added. The interesting part is that the same feature was added to R3. Frankly, this addition impressed me a lot and I thought that there would be more recognition features (plane, skin, etc.) with the new updates. The thing is, these didn't happen. These new recognition features came with the R6 Mark 2 and R8. I would love to see the R5, R6 and R3 get these features.
Well, Canon, what's about battery grip firmware update? Dust profile software? Maybe better compatibles with a Sigma/Tamron/Tokina lenses?

I agree with you and think that will be the future. Why don't they put the R6 II focus on the R5 and charge for the upgrade. I paid.
I agree I think that will be the future. It would be great if camera companies made the hardware than app developers could create the software just like phone apps. I think that's where we'll be in about 10 years.
I had an error code 70 on a brand new R6 mkii last year. I traded it in, payed the extra grand and got the R5. I miss the hell out of that R6 mkii.
Really. What is it that you miss so much about the R62?
More extensive subject detection, auto focusing, different options for electronic shutter. You can choose what eye you want and what person you want to focus on by scrolling across. It's like a mini R3 without a stacked censor.
I think that would be great with paid updates if they ad worthwhile features.

Your principle is very good, but the technology and AI is moving very fast, not to mention the shareholders profits… it will be great but realistically they will not do it, sadly, but a good thought per sure 😊
I 100% agree with you. Shareholder want their returns. Sadly it's probably shareholders that drive innovation rather than genuine creativity and an innovative spirt.

Today, i saw that error 70 three times, but my firmware 1.8.1, I just update, let see if it doesn't appear anymore

with R5 processing power i can't imagine what magic lantern will unlock :D , but yeah this firmware isn't supposed to be the BIG 2.0 , it should be a 1.9.5 or something , for 2.0 at least give us more , the R5 is capable of doing more
100% agree. Oh and I can't wait for Magic Lantern to get their programmers into the R5 and open up the full potential of this camera. The R5 has so much potential.

I don't know why, but after I updated the R5 to the 2.0 firmware, my pictures come blurry, even at 1/500s...
My lens is Sigma 60-600.
That's so strange. I haven't heard that before. Do you know other R5 users who shoot with a sigma are they having issues too? I would contact Canon support and talk to them.

In my next life time, I guess we'll all get what was promised when we buy something. Not a great update as nothing in this for me, just as well go back to my 1dx 3!

It's really unfortunate considering the 2.0 name of the firmware. I was hoping for a some big updates.
Canon needs to remove the 30 minute record limit….or at least allow automatic re-starting for video once it hits the 30 minute mark
That is a fantastic idea. An auto restart recording after 30min would be a great solution if they can't actually make the camera go for longer than 30min.
@@vaskoobscura_ yeah, Magic lantern software has enabled this feature on older cameras like the 5D mark 3, so it’s definitely possible

Canon must be well aware of customer feedback and firmware requests before they release each iteration. Obviously they are making minor improvements only, so as not to impact sales of their other cameras and upcoming models. I find this greedy mindset the biggest turn off with Canon, and the most likely reason I would switch brands in the future. At the very least they should offer some customer engagement as to why they can't offer the most obvious improvements such as an AF upgrade and RAW burst pre-shooting to at least make the camera look like a 2024 product (given that it is still in their current line up).
100% agree. Canon seems to be motivated by profit more then they are motivated by creating a positive customer experience. Unfortunately for Canon they have lost and will continue to lose customers because of that. If you make the customers feel good they will always come back for more. A lesson clearly lost by those those that run the company.

I get what you're saying. This wasn't a firmware worthy of a new digit and I agree. This firmware was just a few small fixes.

@@vaskoobscura_I’m actually starting to regret not getting the Sony a7s III instead. About £4k for a camera and you put 30mins recording limit on it? Can nobody sue canon?
The DIGIC X processor is getting outdated. It was released on the 1D X Mark III in February 2020. It can only do so much. Hence the R1 and R5II will use newer CPU technology. There the runway for more features in software over time becomes reality.
That makes sense. I have a feeling that the new R52 will have a dedicated chip just for Autofocus calculations much like the new Sony cameras. There was a patent leak recently that hinted at it.

Looks like I'll be skipping this "major" firmware update. Movies: Ghost Busters, True Lies and I didn't recognize the 2nd one. I'd consider paying for a major firmware update, depending on what it is.

100% agree. For a 2.0 update I was expecting a lot more.
Not a good idea. 1. Would anyone you know pay $300 for this 2.0 update? And, if someone passes on V.2, would they pay $300 for V. 2.1 or $600 since 2.1 would require having V2 installed. 2. High volume shooters, those who shoot in harsh environments, and those who travel with their gear among others begin to doubt the integrity of their camera bodies before 10 years has gone by. 3. The manufacturers would throttle back features in new cameras in order to reap the dollars for the upgrades. 4. What price would buyers who purchase a camera body years after it's release pay? The price of the camera at release with all of the new firmware or the release price along with the cost of the upgrades? 5. The competition in the camera market is driven by new sparkly things....not new firmware updates.

I wish Canon could take a lesson from companies like DJI. Their Firmware updates are like getting an all new piece of equipment. They think they own us and therefore force us into loyalty. I have thought about switching to Sony for this reason.
Such a shame that they use the real updates to release yet another new camera.

Ghost busters tremors and true lies. I bought an R5 rather than waiting for the R5 mk II, because I felt that Canon wouldn't offer any firmware updates for that new body without a subscription.
Nice job you got all three movies. You're the first one. A lot of us were hoping that Canon would update the R5 with a bigger update in firmware. I guess we'll have to wait for Magic Lantern to get into the firmware and open up the full capability of this camera.

Thanks for the comment. It’s always good to wait a month or so before updating firmware. If there are bugs let someone else find them. lol. But generally you want to keep up to date with firmware to ensure new lens compatibility. These cameras are more computer than camera these days.

For me personally I have to make these videos because it's part of the identity of the channel. But if you mean it the other way if I was not a TH-camr I wouldn't bother with the update.

It’s sad seeing canon give us all this garbage firmware updates while Nikon is giving the Z8 and Z9 awesome 2.0 firmware updates.
Plus canon is going to release a mark 2 with the firmware updates and charge us $3500 again lol
Canon is a big disappointment. They release a 2.0 FW and this is it? No pleasant surprise for existing users as a goodbye gift before launching Mark II? I don't know what Canon thinks about their users.
