What do you mean "for a mazda," lol? Mazda by consumer reports and car and driver was ranked 3rd for reliability in 2022 and 5th in 2024. It has a better interior and exterior than both the Honda and Toyota and most of their cars are made in Japan. Still overinflated prices, but it's clear you have no idea what you're saying.

I've always loved toyotas from the 90's-early 00's. So I've always had a soft spot for them cheap japanese econoboxes. I own 4 of them: '99 corolla, '02 camry, '05 sentra, & '06 corolla. none of them have given me any problems, and they are all easy to repair & maintain. I don't plan on getting a rid of any of them, so I'll probably drive them for the rest of my life. Which is fine by me. Back in 2009, A friend of mine bought a used '06 versa hatchback 6spd. I agreed with your points until the end. The problem with cars isn’t just the tech, it’s the size, complexity, and greed of the company. Today’s corollas are the same or larger than Camrys from the 2000’s. Americans are unique in that everyone HAS to own a car, and that it tends to be a reflection of their social status. Nobody wants a cheap car, so anything nice is inflated. Fierce competition also drives up prices as cars are packed with more complex machinery. As for what I don’t agree with, I don’t agree that emissions restrictions are dumb. The US leads the way in gigantic, archaic, fuel guzzling cars. I love them too, but as a society, we can’t have them in large quantities, and not forever. Most other countries (even Japan with famous sports cars under its belt) has emissions restrictions and favor more economical cars. I think a large engine tax instead of a ban is more logical. The pollution and noise that cars make isn’t an indisputable fact of life, it’s a product of how we choose to transport ourselves. Whether it be hybrid, electric, hydrogen, or some other type of drivetrain, we will at some point be forced to widely transition to cleaner vehicles for our health and the environment.

A large reason for this can be found at the buyers themselves. A car without AC? This has to be standard. A car without big screen to not only listen, but watch the radio? Ehm, nope. Electric seat adjustment, automatic tailgate, auto-dimming, follow-me-home-lights? Well, I take it! This all led to the prices we now have, and further to horrendous repair costs for all the sensors in the front bumper when having a minor accident. So what's the whining all about?

IMO for me standard features for modern cars should just be: AC, electric windows, central locking, basic cruise control, auto dim rear mirror, auto headlight, heated mirror, backup camera, and good responsive touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (yes at least just this one, no jeed for built in GPS or games in the car). We don't need lane keep assist, 360 camera, auto cruise control, semi autonomous self driving, heated seat and steering (at least on certain climate dont really need this), auto start/stop, keyless start, retractable door handle, fancy led matrix headlight, and putting fake leather or alcantara everywhere. We ended up actually putting luxury features on supposed to be everyday economy car.
I think some new things should be standard but not too much. For screen, having just Android Auto and CarPlay is more than enough since its what most will car anyways. Screens don't need to be too big either at least at base model, but touch responsiveness is a must still. Also we need more physical controls, less touch based interface which is horrible for driving.
Dashboard is something I'm not sure. If traditional gagues is cheaper, then that what is should be for base. But if LCD is actually cheaper since its literally just an LCD with basic electronics, that might be more simple than more complicated gagues.

I think the commenters above are reinforcing your point. Is it that hard to wind a bloody window down?
I'm Australian, and looking at buying my kid's first car. (My mates and I virtually all destroyed our first cars - either literally - or with mods that destroyed engines or were stupid and added negative value in practice to the car). I went to an Auction site for Repo'd cars looking for value, clicked the wrong button and went to the page where insurance companies sell the vehicles they've written off. Fuck me. So many written off cars have damage to only the rear, or a quarter, and from 3 sides they look brand new. But the damage has let water into the electronics, and by the time you add up all the electric motors and sensors, ECU's and Semiconductors, these things are not worth repairing before you add a cent for Labour or new panels.
As young men, we'd have bought these 3 year old write-offs with 20,000 kms on the clock, and thrown their engines in our 15 year old bangers. But you can't do that today. A 3 year old Mazda's engine sensors send different massages to its ECU than a 10 year old Mazda's, even tho you think they're the same thing. And that ECU sends different messages to the Dash Screen, meaning it won't work either. So unless your building a track only Frankenstein or a Dune buggy, replacing engines and transmissions from different years is a nightmare.
As a teenager I changed engines, transmissions, clutches and brakes. But none of that is user serviceable anymore without voiding warranties, or more importantly, your insurance. And it's a million times more complicated than it used to be. I was an absolute amateur at wrenching, but there was still a lot I'd take on.
@GreatExpectations - I'm only 50, but when I was a kid, cars didn't have A/C, and we'd drive hours to holiday spots when it was 50C/120F. A wet towel in a closed rear door with the window down is fine for A/C when you're not worried about buggering up any electronics in the door. Hot air blows thru the wet towel and cools right down.

The thing is about the tech argument is that it isn't even entirely true. Replacing everything with LCD and touch screens saves manufacturers a buttload over the old analog options. The issue is the perception of screens vs dials and buttons, and how manufacturers trick consumers into thinking that it is important to have a mini tv screen slapped into their center console. We are getting to the point now the screens are so large they went from mini horizontal displays to giant vertical ones that are taller than the steering wheel. Getting into a 2010 Honda with buttons and dials makes you feel like you are in a junky old car, a relic from a bygone era where in order to turn the ac temp up and the volume down, you would simply reach over and turn a dial clockwise or counter clockwise. Now, at the repeated press of a button, you can navigate from your car's built in map over to audio settings, and then down to volume options and either slide or hold an on screen button to adjust as needed, and then you simply flick over to the climate tab and do the same for your preferred temp setting. Not only is it unsafe, unintuitive, and many times the cause of headaches in repair, but it is literally a cheaper option for manufacturers, all while being able to claim it is a luxury feature while they explain away the fact that the 2010 Honda cost nearly 10 grand less than its modern counterpart, and will likely be on the load twice as long without major issues. In the modern world of "daily driving" vehicles, you are laughed at if you ask for less, both in price and "features". If I wanted to look up directions, I have a device in my pocket that can do the exact same things these cars have built into them, and if I needed my car to tell me these directions, why wouldn't I just spend $2 on an audio cable to run from my car to my phone to let me?
I haven't bought a new car in nearly a decade so I can't say personally why somebody would want one of these new vehicles, since sadly I haven't had a 20 year old in a polo shirt and khakis ride around with me in one to tell me how great they are. I genuinely feel bad thinking about all the first time car buyers looking to bury themselves in debt, some so they can "keep up with the Joneses", but others because we in a modern world where there are more options for cars, trims, packages, and features, but less options for affordability, practicality, and reliability in many cases.

As long as buyers are willing to pay $60-80K for a "luxury" crew cab pickup or a Tesla, automakers are only too happy to charge those prices and rake in the profits. Trucks and SUVs all have higher profit margins than traditional sedans, so of course it's in the best interests of the automakers to push those vehicles over cheaper models. People think they need all of these fancy nanny features that are supposed to keep them safer on the road, when all you need to do is take a $40 defensive driving course and make yourself a better driver. When I was growing up in the 70s, there weren't even FWD cars out yet, but amazingly we all got through the winters in our RWD cars and wagons without any lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control or anything else on today's cars and trucks that just push up the price. A good driver is the best safety feature in any vehicle.

As someone born in the US, but living and working abroad for decades, this seems so easy to explain.
    1. Nobody bought them. Why? Cheap fuel, cheap taxes/tabs/registration/etc, and the ever increasing need to go bigger. That is both something you see far more often in NA, but also results from a sort of arms race when everyone else is driving an overweight land barge.
    2. The CAFE system, along with others, all but incentivizes companies to produce large, heavy, expensive vehicles.
    3. Greed. Many identical models of car are considerably cheaper to buy in my area right now. For example a Honda Civic 5dr hybrid is around $5500 USD cheaper than it is in the US, as listed by Honda. But this does not include sales tax in the US, so the true price is higher still. (sales/VAT/etc taxes are included in all prices elsewhere)
I just find it a bit funny when I see people elsewhere complain that cars are so expensive when they intentionally ignored less expensive cars for decades. Did they not realize this would be the end result? It was clear decades ago.
(And used car prices being set by what is functionally a cartel in the US is insane, but that is another topic entirely.)

I disagree with the part about hybrids being undesirable because of their maintenance costs. If you look at the Prius, they remain on the road with the original engine much longer than most vehicles. The batteries are known to last 10+ years, and there are third party replacement options for them. With the gas savings, longer brake pad life, not having to replace things like alternators or starters, a hybrid can save the owner money in the first 10 years of ownership. In terms of owning a car for 20+ years, yeah a traditional ICE would probably be cheaper once all the major components need to be replaced.

The vehicles follow the money. The mid-30s and under were usually the crowd that would buy the slower 2 door coupes and small sedans as a first or second car.
Older than mid-30s crowd usually has kids + needs something that can haul stuff and people. This lends them to mini-vans or Station Wagons. (If they don’t get a truck)
Minivans were all the rage in the 80s-90s, then they were lame, so people bought true SUVs. A true SUV can be a bit rough riding, so they reintroduced Station Wagons again and called them CUVs so people wouldn’t feel lame buying one.
My point is, the crowd that can currently obtain enough debt to buy a new vehicle is the over-mid-30s crowd. This crowd always gravitated towards the Minivan/Station Wagon segment. The younger crowd has been losing financial power for decades. This has made catering to them less profitable for the manufacturers and plenty have dropped the market all together.
They still make sporty cars, but the expected buyer is older. There’s a reason the 2-door coupe is all but extinct. Older people want 4 doors.

Poorer people that were main consumers of cheap cars can't afford new ones anymore. Raising cost of living has priority so they drive old cars longer. Also insurance rates for new cars are a lot larger than they ever were regardless of car size.

You can buy a brand new Mitsubishi Mirage for under $15k. The Camry costs more today than it did 10 years ago, but it also is cheaper to operate and cheaper to insure because it has technology that can stop or minimize some crashes.

Car makers should make a limited trim level for each model naming it "classic" having a car with barely any features and a manual transmission to cut costs as possible BUT sell it for like 67% MSRP of the normal equipped car with lane assists, apple car play, android auto, etc...
And I say a limited production since only the fewer people with no money would buy them.

@@AltimaV6SportsCar It will most likely never come because of the amount safety regulations put on manufacturers to sell a brand new vehicle in the US. Plus I’d bet 95% of people wouldn’t want those things removed because most people aren’t into cars, they just want something nice that takes them from point A to point B.

Actually all of them still make affordable cars, its not available in the US market, but those cheap cars are very basic but get the job done. Also cars outside the US are getting pricier tbh

I don't really get your hate for hybrid drivetrains. I've been driving hybrid Toyotas for years and they never gave up on me. Not only they have really low fuel consumption but they are also dirt cheap to maintain, because hardly anything ever breaks.

Dude. I’m ngl. The car market has kept up surprisingly well with inflation. A 2010 Camry se’s msrp was $24,000. The 2025 Camry se’s msrp is $30,000. $24,000 in 2010 has the same buying power as about $35,000 in 2024. This being said, cars are cheaper than they were in 2010 when you take inflation into consideration.

In regards to Jaguar, unless you know already, you have heard anything yet. They actually have plans to relaunch the brand making six-figure models to compete with Rolls-Royce and Bentley. in short, they are revamping the brand to cater exclusively to millionaires and billionaires, because that would be the only people that can afford those cars.

The newest car I have ever bought was a 94 T-Bird back in 95. I think I paid maybe $15,000 back then which was pretty reasonable. Even though I am at a much better point in my life most likely if I were to buy a car now it would have to be around 10 years old before I could afford it or at least willing to pay more than that. It would have to be a Toyota IMHO they are the best cars currently made and keep their value.

Nissan versa kinda fit this build but I heard they are not making them anymore. It sounds nice on paper, a cheap new car under 20k, but with all the compromises people will spend the extra few grand to avoid the headaches and get a better new or used car. Also inflation is another factor to consider. All depends on what you want, you can find newish cars under 30k, hell I heard rumors of the new Kia k4 will be mid 20s.
