We’ve got some bad news for you small car fans… They're set to go extinct!
That’s right, manufacturers are making fewer & fewer small cars than ever before, and some have gone out of production entirely! For example, Peugeot won't be making a replacement for the 108, and Citroen has ended production of the C1!
But why the change, we hear you ask? Well, there are a number of reasons. For starters, SUVs are starting to prove much more popular. Did you know that these days HALF of all cars sold are SUVs?! What’s more, they’re much more profitable to manufacturers compared to small cars, so it’s no surprise that we see so many on our roads these days.
Want to find out why else small cars are going extinct, and also what we can do to help encourage manufacturers to bring them back!? You’ll have to stick with Mat to see for yourself!

Simple reason for the weight-adjusted CO2 emission limits: Germany has several carmakers that produce large, heavy, luxurious cars. So Germany decided they won't have it that car manufacturers of small cars (Renault, Fiat, etc) would get an advantage so they negotiated this weight factor into the regulation.
Which, as you pointed out, resulted in it being completely uneconomical to build small, efficient cars.

This is why in the 70s Japanese cars came and filled the gap. Then in the 90s Korean cars came and filled the gap when Japanese cars became more expensive. Now the Romanian Dacia is increasingly popular to fill the gap of cheap cars. The Chinese cars will storm Europe soon enough to save the day in terms of cheap cars.

I work as an Qualiy Engineer for Electronics in cars for about 7 years now. My advise to safe money at the moment, buy a simple small used car with a simple weak 4-Zylinder Petrol Engine without a Turbo, without LED or Xenon Headlamps or big expensive Wheels and keep it as long as you can. Learn to maintain it yourself as good as possible and never put too much money in any car.

The first 2-7 years which is waranty time nothing is wrong. Just if you want to safe money and keep the car as long as possible I would avoid them. The LED's theoretically last long enough but the housing of the headlamp is out of plastic and these are not normal LEDs like in your electrical christmas candles, they can get quite hot. If you keep a car for 10 years or more and the headlamp is exposed to heat and also the sunlight or you do a lot of motorway driving some stones on the road hit the old plastic housing... it is posible that it get's a little leakage where water can penetrate inside. And if there is humidity inside the housing, the LED's on the PCBA do not tend to last very long. These headlamp are not cheap and will probably be not so easy to get in 10 years (complex production) compared to a bulb (simple production) which, by the way, you could change yourself.

@@meloaleo I did not want to rule out any car (^^). It's just my choice of the best compromise to safe money. I think the 4-cylinder creates less vibration and for me and my family the Aygo would be too small. But the 1.0 VVT-i 3-Zylinder engines are known to be very reliable... if you change the oil time after time... They have a timing chain and tend to be easy to maintain in general. In my opinion it's a little more difficult to change the engine air filter compared to my Auris with the 1.33 VVT-i and there is less space to work under the hood.
My dad has an early Skoda 1.2 TSI for example which is known for engine problems. It also has a Turbo and direct injection. I would not buy one... but he does drive it a lot and he never had any problems. It's also a little bit luck always I guess (^^).

I rented a small, 7 seater van to tour around Britain with my family. When I got to the rental dealership, they only had 9 seater vans available and offered me one at the same price as the smaller 7 seaters.

I had a new car with Lane keeping assist that you had to forcibly disable every time you started the car.
I used to drive on a 40mph road which meant the lane keeping (active >35mph) was on. I'd regularly have to cross the middle line to avoid parked cars but then the lane keeping assist would kick in and try to force you back. On two or three occasions when I've not caught and forced past the lane keeping.. the emergency braking systems had to also activate. There was plenty of space for me to perform the manoeuvre at the speed I was going but because it's not a unified system its more dangerous than had they not been active.
Cars should either self drive or they should not. Half and half systems are dangerous.

      @lawrenceholden3789 2 ปีที่แล้ว +75

I find the whole concept of these systems ridiculous. Anyone driving a vehicle has had to learn a skill and pass a test, their focus should be on driving, hazard awareness, perception, should know where they are on the road, when to brake, what speed they are doing. A vehicle having systems which distract and irritate the driver, let alone decide when to brake is a liability. I don't want a new car with a distracting I Pad stuck on the dashboard to have to struggle with, I don't even pair my phone as this would be a major distraction, easy to stop somewhere safe and return the call when I can give it my full attention. With a competent focused driver, the Dacias are not only safe but probably a lot more enjoyable than the expensive gadget ridden SUVs.

All you should have to do on any of the cars with lane keep is blip your blinker, and then you can change lanes without it intervening. I've never had to turn off lane keep on my Audi except for situations where the cameras can't work right (crappy painted lane lines, or them being obfuscated by something) because I blip my blinker if I'm changing lanes anyways. And at least on my car turning it on and off is as simple as clicking a button on the blinker as well.
I wouldn't buy a new car that doesn't have lane keep and adaptive cruise capabilities, it makes driving on the highway in traffic much less annoying.

It’s quite simple actually… the difference between an suv and a sedan will be between 400 and 1000 kg. Baterries are very expensive and put a lot of weight on the car. So manufacturers instead of making cheap electric small cars for 30k make electric suvs for 40-50k because it’s a better deal for your money. And obviously this appeals to the european and american middle class.
This in turn speeds up the race to the electric future, because once the batteries will become cheaper as time passes small cars could become once again mass manufactured and very affordable. I predict that could happen around mid 2030s. That is unless public transportation becomes too good, and robo-taxis take over, along with bikes and just walking. The latter is more likely.
Until then the poor wil either have to stick with old second hand cars if they live in rural areas and need it, otherwise just take public transportation and an e-scooter/e-bike. Perhaps and uber if you go out of town.
It’s actually the best route the goverments took.

In other words, they’re pushing the SUV envelope not because it’s what’s best for the consumers, but because it’s easiest for them to turn a profit. SUVs, most of the time, are no better built than their car counterparts (Exhibit A: The Volkswagen ID. 4, a 2021 car that uses rear drum brakes). They just appear to be more substantial due to their size, weight, and appearance. Because of that, people are willing to pay more for that. On top of that, now manufacturers tend to equip the SUVs with more features to make them even more enticing.
I don’t buy into the SUV façade, and in fact I find their gluttonous size and compromised handling quite undesirable. Unless you truly needed the space, how is paying more for a vehicle you don’t need a better deal?

I'm looking at restarting my lessons next year and doing a lot of research into what way to go down the car route. I'm thinking of possibly going down the hybrid route on a lend lease deal for 4 years 🤔 I'm wanting to get a car that's gonna be decent around town to get me to and from work, then be able to travel easily on country lanes when I go out walking then also be able to handle motorway journeys. I'm 6ft 1 and 38 years old, do I stick with public transport or do I go full balls deep into lessons and get a car. I've even considered the costs of running an EV such as the Kona or Nero without having access to a home charging station. So many things now to take into consideration as a first time driver it's bonkers. I know an EV would be cheaper to run and service over the long run over a petrol hybrid, however until the costs come down then is it really a viable option until the infrastructure is properly in place.

      @AleXcsGaming 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@thijs2906 no, class has nothing to do with it. It’s simply unsustainable for everyone to have a car in the major cities of europe.
      1. Not enough space for everyone, constant traffic jams, always seeking for parking space
      2. More pollution in the air
      3. Electric cars have batteries which make a car heavier and more expensive. Instead of making a 30k small hatchback companies prefer to make 40-50k plus SUVs that appear to the middle class and beyond. This in turn is a compromise that indeed makes cars a luxury item, but that’s because of climate change and urban centers becoming way too crowded.
I’d rather take the metro and an e-scooter to work everyday and make 10-15 minutes instead of going for 30-60 minutes commutes in my car. More convinient, I have more time for myself, I spend less money and I’m more enviormentally friendly. And there’s more room to breath!
Now, if you live in a rural community, just buy an old diesel until electrics become more affordable.

We're seeing the same phenomenon here in Australia too. Putting aside the impact on freight transport and supply lines from COVID for a moment, there has been a trend upwards in pricing for "entry level" motoring. ICE vehicles will continue to have a very very very long future in Australia simply because of the sheer size of the country and vast distances between major population centers.
Public transport in our major cities were already under strain before COVID, and with the advent of more expensive motoring, this is set to get a lot worse. Yet successive Governments have not been able to adequately address this.
And now, we are facing a global urea supply restriction which has a direct impact on DEF/AdBlu availability. Freight transport is facing a potentially catastrophic problem if this can't be resolved in the next couple of months or so (for Australia).

What you said is right, but I’ll add that especially un Europe, govs are witch hunting cars in cities, therefore making them only adapted for inter cities or rural transportation. This also lead owners to buy more confortable/bigger cars.

Given that cities want to get rid of cars in general by decreasing speed, increasing tolls,..., the essence of small city cars don't really make sense. So logically, people take bikes and scooters in town and buy cars to go out of cities with their family, hence the huge increase in Familial SUVs

I love my 88 Galant and my 07 Dacia Logan MCV but both will leave me soon. I've always bought good used cars for little money. Looking at what will expect me and my savings and the car market. I already bought a cheap Chinese electric car and in 6 months I'll have a flat rate charging port in my garage. So the next winter will be the last for my Galant and as soon as it comes out I'll buy the Dacia Jogger with LPG. Never thought that something like that will happen and I'm genuinely sad to see soany cars leaving our roads early for "progress" but I got to make the best out of the situation 🤷

Add to that the reliability issues. The cars from the 90's and up to 2010 are the more reliable thing in the world, a Corolla from the 98 or a Hilux from the 96 are near indestructible (I sold a '96 Hilux 4x4 with 360.000km and it was like new). Now with direct injection, turbo, sloppy piston rings, a LOT of electronics, CVT transmissions, etc, the reliability will be no good when pass the 250.000km mark.

Honestly people are guilty too, this SUV craze happened largely as a result of demand. People buy much bigger cars than they need, and at this point I truly believe they're idiots.
Not that I'm giving manufacturers a pass either. Bigger cars tend to be more luxurious, if you want luxury features you're effectively forced into buying a big car. There's only one hatchback right now which offers ventilated seats for example, and none are superminis. It's mind blowing.

My current car has appreciated like £5,000 in the last year. agreed, i bought my first *new* car in early 2015 (early birthday present, since didn't get it till May), Focus ST-3 MK3 facelift with all the options, and was just under £26k, do that now and your hitting nearly £37k, ignoring the new dashcam option, but you could argue more kit is included, and the engine is the detuned RS one, but still the rising costs could put the next risk on to hot hatches (that and the £40k price limit in UK before you get dumped into the premium tax bracket of £335 for 5yrs, plus your annual cost as per your car's emmisions). Subaru prices in UK jumped about £3k in late 2019/early 2020 due to the emissions fines cost being passed on, they don't sell enough units in UK/EU, now we lose the Levorg and BRZ......all a great shame 🤷‍

Taxing drivers completely off the road altogether would present other issues, such as a £35 billion black hole in tax revenues. There would also be a 3 to 4 million plus increase in the jobless total, due to the closure of oil refineries, fuel tanker drivers, petrol stations, car dealerships, garage services, tyre fitting depots, car body repair shops, places like Halfords, the AA and RAC, Local Authority road repair crews etc... I could go on, but you get the picture....

As someone who is firmly in the "used car only" market I fear that all the automated safety features will prove unreliable long before the basics of the vehicle have reached the end of their service life. This trend will increase the running costs of older cars and probably destroy right to repair. Automakers may find that they have killed the golden goose.
