    The Roland FP-30X is the _creme de la creme_ for piano emulation at the price point. I just got mine yesterday (2024). Piano emulation is what I wanted. Above all, I wanted emulation of the acoustic piano keyboard action. I don't want anything else, and my immediate impression is that the Roland is not the best for any other purpose.
    My opinion is that keyboard action is the most important consideration. A digital keyboard is not an imitation of some other instrument but an instrument of its own accord. If your aim is to graduate to some other instrument finances and skill level permitting, especially an acoustic keyboard instrument, you have to consider how the key action emulates the action of the instrument you intend to play. If you hope to move on to an acoustic piano, a Roland FP-30X is your best choice beyond all others at the price point.
    I was up to the level of an intermediate beginner when I had lessons decades ago. I am not an accomplished musician but I am a good researcher. The FP-30X and even the FP-10 are not just beginner keyboards. You can learn all the way through the intermediate level and even into the advanced level on the Roland action if you have to. You can learn fingering on any keyboard. What you intend to advance to will determine your choice of your entry level instrument.
    As always, do your own research.

    I suppose the lack of Bluetooth audio output could be due to the common latency and/or fidelity issues? Most Bluetooth speakers don't support low latency codecs because they're more expensive to implement. Roland probably wanted a consistent experience. Just a guess.

    • @hcb3636
      @hcb3636 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah that's the reason probably! A normal level of BT audio latency can be very annoying when playing live, and even could be a source of bad reputation...

    I just bought an fp 30x after returning my p125. The fp30x action is extremely realistic IMO, but has a much smaller music stand and also I feel like the piano sound is lacking compared to the p125, but is probably also a little more realistic as well. Seems more like the sound projected is the sound one might hear when sitting at the piano

  • @jjacob25101
    @jjacob25101 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The FP 30X is a great piano for the price, with caveats. I believe this is their second best keyboard action like their newer RD 88 stage piano. I believe the keys are somewhat anti-microbial if I remember, right, and absorb perspiration. Like you mentioned, I don’t like the lack of a display, and the interface controls. My Go:Keys 61K may not have as good keyboard action, but it feels semi-weighted, and textured, and the sounds are pretty good, with lots of variation of acoustic, electric pianos and other voices. But as much as I like Roland keyboards, I would go with the Yamaha DGX-670.

    Hello. Thank you for this.
    Today I was at a piano shop and tried this one. It sounded great.
    The fp-60x sounded better but i think that was mainly because the sound came straight from above instead off behind (not an expert :D)
    But a question. I am very new to playing piano. I am trying to teach myself the basics first before going to a teacher.
    For me this sounds like a great options for me to learn it. Feel how a real piano's feels, so when I ever feel good enough I can play on a real one as well.
    Now I have a very very very cheap one with only 64 keys. There are so many options but all have something that is not very good.
    This one looks like a very good feel, good enough sound (special if you use headphones). Not using other sounds just piano.

    Personally I'm not a big fan of anything distracting on a piano, be it a display or knobs or whatever. So for me the less, the better. An ON/OFF switch, a volume control and a "function" key sounds about right (as on the FP10).

    There is much to like with this board. The keybed to start with, textured keys, Graded Action, the escapement. The 256 bit core piano sound is excellent, with a speaker and amplification to do it justice. A damper pedal that supports half pedaling...very cool! I appreciate the headphone jacks supporting 1/8" & 1/4" jacks. Line out is a biggie. Way to go Roland! Missing is a Mod wheel, which I like having. This board is a little more than a similar featured Yamaha, and Casio. But it's worth it. I'm going to be looking at the Yamaha DGX-670 and the Roland FP-60X. I'm way overdue for a new Keyboard, plus it'll slow me down buying guitars. Another terrific Review Jeremy, thanks for pointing out the good and the bad....and sometimes the Ugly!

      I went to see and try the Roland FP30x and the Yamaha P-125.
      I think people are staring blind on the so called ivory texture keys. If you close your eyeshot blindfolded and start playing and listen, you will find out that the Yamaha sounds amazing and plays wonderful. This is how I choose between them.
      All the different voices on the Roland is not needed 50% will never be used. They Keybed is not very durable like the Yamaha. It’s the same as on the FP30. In a couple of months the make strange sounds and need some maintenance.....

    The possibility of detuning specific notes could make for interesting effects - a customised honky tonk would be interesting. The GM honky tonk is too exaggerated IMO, so this may be a solution.
    Seems to me that this piano offers a lot, even if it is not fully featured. But it's time that Roland and Yamaha put basic screens on models costing €500+. The FP30X is €699 (euros) according to my supplier.
    And I am impressed by the addition of proper outputs. This means that Roland is listening to consumers and reviewers. On the strength of the outputs seen in this review I have mentioned this new product to someone who nearly bought an FP30, but held off over the outputs.

    • @JeremySee

    Thank you for a very informative and objective review. A mid-priced keyboard will always be a compromise but this one suits my modest needs very well. I like the action and the concert piano sound is very pleasing. That is the only sound I really care about, and to get it all I have to do is turn on the instrument. The speakers have enough power for me and that is important. I agree that the volume control should have been a dial or a slider. The keyboard is a little heavy to carry around but I can move it by myself. Also, it fits in my car with the back seat folded down. I haven't tried to use it as a midi controller with a DAW yet but I don't anticipate any problems.

    The sounds from the notes from Roland sounds "pitchy". Am I right? After listening to several 'voice', The organ sounds pitchy when playing the notes around the mid C (middle). Can you make it sounds calmer , lower the pitchy sounds. I like low rich tones. Thanks

  • @DanielWachowiak
    @DanielWachowiak 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Could you tell us how noisy are the keys of FP-30X while playing compared to other pianos?
    I used to have Roland HP302 where thumping was really audible, even outside the room, even when playing softly. I ignored reviewers' warning about that and then regretted it :) I heard FP-30 has annoying clicking which develops over time but this should not be a problem for me (I hope), as I intend to mainly use headphones while playing. I just want other people outside my room not to hear me playing, often late at night.

    • @JeremySee
      @JeremySee  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's physics. Key noise is the sacrifice for getting a hammer action. Over time the dampening felt strip will be compressed and the sound gets louder. . Even if you mute an acoustic grand piano, you will still get key noise.

    • @DanielWachowiak
      @DanielWachowiak 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JeremySee Thank you for your quick response. I was rather wondering if there is anything unusually disturbing about the FP-30X, as it was with the HP-302, where people were able to hear the thumping even on an another floor. I am not expecting the keys to by completely noiseless.

    1. Is it possible to connect to the Roland the piano designer app and to TH-cam at the same time so that you can play TH-cam music simultaneously?

    Thanks for the video. Having watched many FP-30 videos over the last few months I was almost sold on the Roland and waiting for the improvements on the 30x, however even though I knew what to expect with the update, I’m not quite sure why but this has now left me rather underwhelmed about it all. My excitement seems to have gone for this for some reason ! Looks like it’s still the digital piano to go for if you just want a ‘practice’ piano, a good Piano sound, keys and the more realistic action. Otherwise the other sounds seem rather dated and the apps are looking pretty terrible.
    This has left me looking towards something else with a much better usable instrument selection with more modern sounds but still with weighted keys. Roland, Yamaha but KORG is now added to my list to investigate further. Started this journey looking for a digital piano but I’m swaying more and more towards a good weighted key ‘keyboard’ with lots of modern/cool sounds to blend in with a good grand piano sound... in this price range does this even exist?? What would you suggest ?

    • @JeremySee

    The volume control UI/UX just feels frustrating. I suppose they were going for a consistent minimalistic look at the expense of usability, otherwise why not a knob, slider or finer-grained digital representation. They could also simply map 88 volume levels to the keys.

    @Roland, love the clean look and to control it by app instead of an outdated screen on the piano. Everyone has a good phone today, but Roland please make the app a bit more beautiful (by the use of an UX developer) and integrate 'piano designer' in 'piano every day! Besides this, I think it is sad that the 30X didn't get the same round button design as its bigger brothers (60x and 90x). For such a good selling piano, that would be a well deserved face-lift!!

    Is there any upgrade/difference between the action of this piano and the former FP 30?
    I also wonder if it's possible to connect this piano to a DAW and use it as a MIDI controller?
    Thanks in advance!

    "And once again, to the gentle sounds of Eric Satie, we enter the magical piano world of Jeremy See - this time to explore Roland's latest Digital Piano keyboard".
    A pity so many features are accessable only via a phone app. Then again. this is primarily a piano, so clutter has been minimised on the instrument and transferred to their 'phone' app. A point I don't think you addressed when pointing out flaws etc was the issue of attempting to play inbetween the black keys - common in instruments with little depth although. The initial grand piano in the intro sounded well, but the remaining voices sounded little different to me than those Roland has included in some of their pianos for a long time.

    Jeremy, did you find you needed to make many adjustments to get the right amount of resonance on the main piano tone? I purchased an FP50 because of its portability, but I was unhappy that I had to tweak it a lot to get anything like a satisfactory sound, so I returned it. For me, the centre notes were too wet and modulating and didn't cut through well enough for what I do, but that could be just me. I'm not saying that the FP30x's main piano sound won't suit players. The FP50 has since been discontinued of course, in favour of the FP60 I guess.

Nonetheless, I'm urging to set my piano near my desktop, so I can play it more frequently, on work and study intervals. Do you think the trade from acoustic to digital would be disappointing? • @6806goats1

    Thanks for the review. While I think my 2008 Roland RD-700GX is still the bomb, it's too heavy to ship in the mail(stands a good chance of getting damaged as well) if I work overseas. More limitations on the 30X than I'd like to see but the size and weight plus quieter keys than others I'm seeing put it at the top of my list. I like the 60X but again, it's bigger and weighs more. I tend to keep with previously purchased brands so that's a minor consideration as well. Finally, that you bought one for yourself is another factor. The 256 poly vs my 700's limitation of 128 makes me wonder if the 700 has future value. I have the expansion slots full and using 4 different sound banks at the same time tells me I'll be dropping notes. But I'm just a beginner and the 30X should be just fine. Beginner with a 700GX? I like overkill.
