You cannot use the ESR on your lap. The Apple Smart Folio used to be like that, but the new one has corrected that somewhat by the three-position magnets and the wider base. I got a white Apple Smart Folio to go with my silver iPad Pro 13 inch M4 and added a white Spigen DA20 magnetic pencil holder. The combination is stunning!
The issue I had was that the auto screen on/off function didn't seem to work on the ESR case, leaving my iPad Pro (11 inch) on and draining the battery. Was fortunate enough to get the Apple Smartfolio case as a birthday gift, not certain I would spend that much myself but safe to say I love it.
Put your iPad and Apple Pencil in a zipper sleeve to avoid the stylus from coming off in transport. This is the best way to take your devices from place to place.
Boy that’s a tough call. If only you had the additional magnets ESR, and it was $50 it would be a slam dunk. Do you have plans to review or share your experiences on your 2024 M4 iPP?
Almost no one mentions the inside of the case. The Apple one has really good quality of the inside texture, the ESR one feels awful and cheap. Try it for yourself.
I'd go with the ESR case just because of that ability to not lose my pen everytime i slip my tablet into my bag or something. And the apple case is just overpriced.
I got an ESR case for my 13” M4 IPad Pro and it’s super flimsy (selling it). I’m Apple all the way. Sometimes you gotta pay a little extra for good quality.

Why not try a magnetic apple pencil attachment for the apple case from a company like spigen for example?
I wonder if you can add some adhesive magnets to the ESR case so you adjust the angle.
