For those trying to mount this to a racing stand, the large plastic clamp bolt doesn't reach to clamp against a thin piece of metal as it's is expecting to clamp onto a thicker desk, take the 4 small screws from the clamp arm (as shown here at 15:00) and flip the plastic clamp bolt upside down (no need to take anything off from the top of the gear stick) then when reassembled it can clamp against a thin metal stand shelf for a bit of added stability.
As someone who just want to get a small beginners setup, it's super helpful to see a review from an experienced some racer. I like that you don't look down on this inexpensive shifter but also keep realistic expectations. Fantastic review, I'm looking forward to see more of your content!
Thank you for the disassembly. I'm a Mechanical Design Engineer and just getting into sim racing and have ordered this shifter. I have heard about the all of the 3D printed mods to help with the stiffness of the gates, and looks like it all comes down to the tension on the spring loaded steel detent ball engaging into the hole.. This video was very informative. I cannot wait to get mine and start evaluating it.
I got around to evaluating this assembly. What I did was opened up the detent hole by around .020" replaced the detent ball with a slightly larger steel ball, (I believe the included ball was 3/16" around .187" and the increased OD ball I installed was 7/32 around .218") and also expanded the detent spring (by means of just manually stretching it a little) that forces the ball into hole (providing a little more force) and it GREATLY improved the locking and stiffness of the shifting gates :) I believe this is a permanent fix for the stiffness as the design is not changed just altered. I tried the 3D printed route using PLA, and it did work, however, I was concerned with it failing by wear and cracking over time, or decreased stiffness from usage. One more thing I will add, I also soldered the ball to the end of the spring, just wanted to ensure the ball would remain seated against the spring. hope this helps..
@@greg20152015 Have any problems come from your ball swap yet? Thinking i might tackle it this weekend. Been looking around for another shifter but really like the logitech size/style.
I just repaired my sons shifter for a second time by inserting some shims in the potentiometer axis mounting holes. In contrary what one would think, this shifter creates two analogue signals from the two potentiometers which then leave the plug. The wheel obviously defines two voltage thresholds for each axis to determine in which of the three positions the stick is currently in on the given axis. While that in itself is not a problem, the potentiometers and their mounting is. The stick is only moved in a very narrow angle (around 50 degrees on each axis), and therefore the area used on the pots also covers only around 50 degrees, which is tiny. Therefore, even a fraction of a mm of play between the pots and their mounting hole on the stick will lead to significantly off spec voltages which then causes the wheel to misinterpret the chosen gear on the stick. From my experience, theres a 100% chance that every single Logitech G29 shifter will fail sooner or later with a symptom of selecting the wrong row or column of gears. The G29 set is quite nice, but that shifter has very unfortunate design problems.
Solid review, Barry, thank you! Looking forward to your mod review, this shifter looks to be just good enough if you're up to classic H-shifting once in a while
I love my g29. Just take care of it. I was curious how the internals worked. Im delighted to see now that it should be easy to repair or to even mod. I like the idea of putting a stiffer spring into that housing with the ball bearing
I've been looking at getting this shifter as its $50 now, and this is exactly the kind of review I wanted to see. It's great to see the internals and have an idea about the durability of the product and possibilities for modding.
Good tear down, the feel does go away when rigidly mounted. Looks like though that spring/ball can be stiffened to make it have a bit more resistance with shifting, wish I watched this video before cable management though.
Thanks to this video I found the two screws that got me scratching my head because I simply didn't even think they would be so deep down, hidden. I almost broke it. Thank you!
I've always though gears were selected by buttons being pressed by the lever, but in fact it is done by these two potentiometers that indicates the lever position? very clever! Great review Barry!
You’ve saved my shifter, as I knew you would. Now I know how to take the thing apart. The bobbin that holds up the dustcap got loose and dropped, it turned out. It’s not a bad little shifter, considering the wheel it’s supposed to go with. If you go upmarket, the wheel comes first anyway
I own this shifter and it has performed very well. My only issue is the clamp being weak. I pulled it clean off during a race and it totally messed me up. Had to can the race. Reclamped it and it hasn't come off again yet, but I'm not totally sold on the clasps.
Ive since bought the GT Omega ART cockpit. Its a huge upgrade over the cabinet frame I had been using. Although I dont have the shifter hard mounted, the shape and rigidity of the plate have ensured it hasnt come off again.
A lot of us have never used a close ratio short throw shifter. This thing has a close tolerance, it seems. I had one in my Accord but it wasn't even that close. That may take some time and patience to get used to, Wow. Thanks for the upload, Great info!
I'm buying my first set with Forza Horizon 4 (G29 with pedals and this shifter) and unfortunately this is all I can afford. For my first one I don't want to spend too much because I'll likely not use it too much. £300 is a lot of money, along with the game that's a lot of saving. Hopefully this can take some abuse, I haven't even passed my driving test yet.
@Hottest Tracks i thought they wouldnt cause they specify them differently like the g920 for xbox and pc cause of the button layout then the g29 for playstation and pc
Please choose a Thrustmaster wheel & their shifter, Thrustmaster has way better force feedback and has a shifter that you can actually see what gear you're shifting to.
I was playing DiRT Rally 2.0 when my logitech shifter mysteriously stopped shifting into any gears other than 3rd and 4th, so thanks to this tutorial I was able to disassemble it and turns out the plastic grommet had actually gotten unstuck and slipped down to the bottom So basically thanks for the help ig
One thing Logitech needs to do is make a more expensive model of shifter for $150 or so to compete with the TH8 and Fanatec. They'd be smart to do that. Or even just a higher end model that's a little nicer in general, not necessarily to compete.
I did buy this shifter when getting into sim Racing. Sim Racing Garage is correct, the shifter gets the job done and works pretty well. I will be moving WAY up in shifter as I really like driving H Pattern cars, maybe to the FREX or Pro Sim. I want the more immersion and realism that I feel this Logitech Shifter cannot supply.
I bought one of these (as per other comments it's all I could afford). Initially i drilled into my table and used the M6 screws (not provided) because the shifter would slide off (I have a table with a round edge). I didn't mind the holes because this is an old table. After a while it started to annoy me. For the novice mounting it next to the wheel is kind of ok but that is not the location it normally is in a car or where your hand normally falls to. So that, together with pedals sliding away and kids needing a box to prop them up made me decide that the whole G920+Shifter combo would be best suited on a proper rig. Due to space & budget limitation I designed and built my own and will install it soon (painting it now). Back to the shifter though, I totally agree with your comments, for the money this would do and the fact you demonstrated you can drive (and you CAN DRIVE) it well enough with this shifter affirms that it is actually not a bad buy (while you put any extra cents into the 'Serious Gear' saving jar (currently only a dream). Thank you for the review. It can be modded and extended but that would put undue stress on it. I would use it until it dies (or the kids kill it). Highly recommend bolting it though. For the record minimum plate width for clamps is 10mm and back plastic clamp (a surprising) 18-20mm so if you have a 16mm desk it will move and you will need a spacer or extra piece of wood.
Very solid video man, i bought logicrap because i was new and uniformed, and this shifter while it works totally fine drives me MAD, its either impossible to find the right gear or slips back out easily. Im definitely getting a 3d printed gate soon, was hoping it might manage without one after removing the boot but guess ill just have to wait till i get the gate.
I have the G27 shifter which minus the buttons is the same thing as the Driving Force Shifter . The problems I have come accross is it doesn't take long for the shifting gets more loose as time goes on and starts to feel more sloppy than it did in the beginning .
I still use this shifter and if you loosen and raise the screws at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock and stretch ten "2mmx44mm Black Nitrile Rubber Sealing O Ring Seal Washer Grommets" from amazon over the two screws, you have a quick sequential shifter. Just unhook the O rings when you want to revert back to h-shift. Works great :)
One of the advantages I've always found on this shifter vs most is the quick short throw action it offers, something to think about if you're after faster lap times.
still got my g25 shifter and wheel with the buttons on. and it still works great surpassingly durable for how plasticky it is. also mine has a sequential mode
best upgrade for this shifter is to add a small bolt with a large head (to act as a spacer for preloading) behind the spring that makes the ball fall into the detends. He shows the bit i'm talking about at 21:16. Idea is to add preload to the spring (because the bolt has a large head that makes it act as a spacer) to make the shifts notchier. Works great, good & free upgrade to this shifter.

Could you take the leather off the plastic bit and put it back on to get the clean look without the leather So it’s almost mimicking the Thrustmaster shifter because I want to take off the leather put the plastic ring back on and get a cool shifter knob. But I don’t know if it’s possible. Any answer would be greatly appreciated
how much power (5VDC) draw does this use. I have a Arduino Pro Micro that I want to use to make this shifter a stand alone USB device. I think it says 200mA is the max draw??
Could you show me how to exchange microswitches inside the wheel?, i'm ussing logitech g 29 and I have a problem with paddle shifter,I guess it's a problem with the microswitches
Hello Barry, thank you for this great review. I'm wondering if is a good shifter or mine is failed, because with month of normal use and treat, the first gear is not entry well. All the others are fine, only the first gear doesn't response. Do you think I have to take it to warranty or this is normal? Thank you!
I picked up a Logitech driving force pro at a garage sale. I tested it for power by plugging in the power supply. The two green lights on the steering wheel did not light up. Since I don't own a Playstation, I was not able to test it with the steering wheel connected to it. My question is, "Does the steering wheel need to be connected to a Playstation for the lights to turn on and power up?" Thanks in advance for your answer!
i really like this shifter but i lost the back clamp so it went useless i trying to find it around here but i also searching for websites to find one but no luck so far
12:46 I disassemble a half shifter beacuse something was blocking so I can't sling a gear and it emerged that was this little piece of plastic who fall dawn... Sorry for my english it may be or it is bad
I have to disagree about this shifter being adequate for its intended purpose and feel it's way overpriced based on the one I received. Maybe I got a particularly bad one, but in decades of driving manual transmission vehicles, I've missed very few shifts and selected the wrong gear even fewer times in daily driving and racing situations combined. Even when shifting the Logitech very slowly and carefully, downshifting to second has a tendency to hang in neutral and going for third often results in getting fifth. I had an 82 Trans Am and the shifter felt like you're rowing through a mixture of oatmeal and quick set cement and I had fewer problems with gear selection during the entire time I owned it than I've had in less than a handful of days with this shifter. If I weren't pretty sure that I've already recycled the box, I'd send it back. I don't think I could have broken anything unless it could have failed unnoticed under practically "kid glove" treatment. I've been shifting like I'm driving a bus full of people wearing "hot pants" who are all holding overfilled cups of scalding hot coffee with no lids on them, not a race car. 😉 Thanks for the video and I'll see if you ever did a follow up video that improves things. I'm wondering how much a shifter for a T56 costs. Maybe the electronic guts of the Logitech could be mated to a T56 shifter... IMHO and based on the example I have, the Logitech shifter should be priced at no more than $29.99 because in order to be anything more than a cheap toy, it needs some serious modifications. I don't know why I didn't just stick with the flappy paddles. 🤔😉
I think 29.99 is still way to high for what you actually get, and for how cheap it is designed and made it won't cost them even 5 bucks to churn out one of these.
i've been bought this shifter for 3 months ago, now often jump gear if we play sim racing, from gear 1 to 3, and then from gear 6 to 4, wheres the problem? help me pls , thx before
Personally Id guess its a buggy or dirty potentiometer, the one that detects whether the shaft is to the left (1-2), center (3-4), or right (5-6-R). The other detects whether up, center, or down
Thanks for showing me how to tear this down reverse gear has just failed in my unit after 3 years and probably about 100,000 miles of use. Cant see anything wrong though? :(
It is probably just broken. It happens with mice and keyboards too, they have a limited amount of clicks, it's the same thing with a shifter but then it's with the gears.
I’ve had one for 3 years and abused it for nearly every day and it finally started to mess up. Before that, the only thing was that I lost the top cap. It may not be as good at the thrustmaster one, i certainly recommend it. Also, this coming from a guy who broke three headphones in a year from accidentally dropping them and getting up while they were plugged in lol. I am really bad at taking care of electronics, although the shifter put up to all of my abuse. If you’re on a budget or am rough on stuff, get this.
My logitech shifter has started to slip over from 1st to 3rd and 2nd to 4th gear. Tired of the plastic so I decided to buy a TH8A shifter instead, don't know if it's a problem that a normal user can fix..
I extended mine with 12cm rod and then sat that over the existing rod and Refitted the original knob to the top , now it feels alot more “real” at least for me anyways , Car wreckers or hardware store has metal rods of all shapes and sizes just gotta maguyver stuff together!, also dont use powertools on these unless you want to ruin shit !, unless you do this stuff alot
@@Sithhy hey mate , yeah it was slightly larger diameter and went over the top then sorta tighten up at the bottom, but can Use cloth/duct tape AT BOTTOM to hold in place and hide it with the leather cover , also I bought a real gear shift knob (Sparco silver one $20) it came with rubber size adapters and one fits perfectly over the top end of the rod that's just a but larger than the one on the gear shifter , now it's bloody great and easy to do, any auto store will have gear shift levers and most come with adapters , good luck mate👍
It's a good review. All these other TH-camrs just bash on it. They are all snobs. Just jumped into the scene and acting like professionals. Too bad you're not making any new content. Others are not thorough and rely totally on appearance and emotions. They would stick this shifter on something flimsy and say it's total garbage. Then compare it to their $500 shifter on a solid rig.
I guarantee 100% that it's NOT real leather...in fact almost nothing is made from real leather these days, if it is, it's not on a $50 video game controller.
This isn’t really a review, this is an entire college course. Good Job!

Could you take the leather off the plastic bit and put it back on to get the clean look without the leather
So it’s almost mimicking the Thrustmaster shifter because I want to take off the leather put the plastic ring back on and get a cool shifter knob.
But I don’t know if it’s possible. Any answer would be greatly appreciated
Love that rig
Thx bro I played cat x and hated the leather part
Excellent analysis. Mine stopped registering the reverse gear, asides from that I didn't mind the feel of it. Any ideas?
my reverse have never worked. i have to go into neutral with the stick, then use the left sport shifter on the wheel to get into reverse
@@TrollFaceMyBallS it could be a common issue then.
kinda unrelated but which track and car combo are you driving?
how much power (5VDC) draw does this use. I have a Arduino Pro Micro that I want to use to make this shifter a stand alone USB device. I think it says 200mA is the max draw??
The voice made me subscribe. No homo.
Thank you!
Take it in for warranty man, should last a bit longer than a month!
Hey what do you think about putting resistance bands on the inside to make the shifter feel more authentic?
Which is more realistic, Logitech shifter or trustmaster th8a?
In stock form, TH8A feels better imo.
What bolt is used at the bottom of the shifter? I need to find a replacement
That wheel is USB, it's compatible with both PS2 and PC. Just plug it into your PC instead.
No, It depend on what game you are playing like Racing or Simulation!!!
i really like this shifter but i lost the back clamp so it went useless i trying to find it around here but i also searching for websites to find one but no luck so far
Have this Shifter feels better when modified
This or the Th8a? I can get the Th8a for exactly double the money, so should I get it instead of this one. Is it wirth it?
Wo what's the reverse wire that always snaps? Cus I think mine did...
Busy so not checked your video out fully yet be have you come across it going into the wrong gear if so do you know how to get rid of the problem
Mine worked great for a few months but now it jumps into neutral at random.
Like it physically goes to neutral or the game says it's in neutral when the shifter is in gear?
Mine came out of the box with the same problem... Did you managed to fix it?
@@GustavoAraujo-zi7fk same here
@@mariyanzarev6423 mine started working after some days... I don’t know what happened to start working, because I didn’t change anything
Is it posible to use a thrustmaster shifter with a g29?
ComputeTHIS yes
For PC yes
can you give me a link to the conversion thing to usb?
The other detects whether up, center, or down
does anyone know why mine keeps misshifting? if i dont RAM it into 5th or 6th it will glitch back to 3rd or 4th. :(
Thanks for showing me how to tear this down reverse gear has just failed in my unit after 3 years and probably about 100,000 miles of use.
How long did you have it until it started doing that?
@@DustyyBoi same thing happened to mine
@@DustyyBoi for me its 2-3 months haha
I extended mine with 12cm rod and then sat that over the existing rod and Refitted the original knob to the top , now it feels alot more “real” at least for me anyways , Car wreckers or hardware store has metal rods of all shapes and sizes just gotta maguyver stuff together!, also dont use powertools on these unless you want to ruin shit !, unless you do this stuff alot
Did you use the same diameter rod as the original one? I would love to do a mod like that on my G29 shifter
You shifting without a clutch?
i never understand why the g920 shifter have better quality then all other event if thy are older i use it whith my need g29 set
Can you use this without the Logitech G29/G920?
Yes, you will need the Leo Bodnar USB conversion module.

Thanks for the quick reply. Great video by the way.
What size monitors do you use in this video demonstration?
27"
How do you get to the 7th gear for some cars?
no hbox cars use 7 gears to my knowledge, they all use paddles/seqeuential so you would be using paddles for those cars.
guys a tip that i can give u is to remove the fake leather to have a clearer shift
How did you connect your Logitech shifter to fanatec?
It was connected directly to the PC via the Leo Bondar USB conversion device.
