From Tula with love. The AKs74u "Krinkov" has been a coveted Kalashnikov variant in North America and Afghanistan alike... and the rumors shroud it. So how accurate is this miniature Kalashnikov? We find out.
To be honest, we see the AKs74u as a fantastic military PDW. In the role of vehicle crew issuance and protection, it excels in shifting the importance towards a smaller physical footprint. I shoots better than the rumored 100m groupings, but at the same time as you imagine, it's not optimized for long distance. Low recoil, light weight. Mobile.

@@nemisous83 As far as I know Russians use this "MP" with a red dot often.. But the police uses them the same way, Henry did. And it's actually pretty accurate up to 300 m according to my father, who served as this thing came out. His company used to test them and they had to use different zeroing methods for this thing. Also build a tool to adjust the sights then. He was damn impressed by this thing, compared to the outdated ППШ which back then were still present here and then. The caliber was the game changer.

AKS-74UN is the designation USSR had for the AKS-74U with a side rail. Spetsnaz used them for a limited time as part of a Tishina set where it used PBS4 suppressor and a 30mm suppressed grenade launcher. It wasn't liked all that much for the reasons you guys stated (ballistics primarily, also it overheated REAL fast) and was the reason why AS VAL was developed. Noone bothered fitting PSO-1 optic on them, but today something like a PK-01VS would be pretty fitting, especially since it'd be bottom 1/3rd cowitness with irons. ACOG on that rail would be sitting pretty high over bore.
PDW is exactly what this rifle is, and was made to be: for pilots, armored vehicle crews, field gun crews, etc. Servicemen that weren't issued a full-size service AK-74/AKS-74.
*Edit: AKS-74U is enjoying a resurgence with Spetsnaz. They take brand-new rifles from storage, replace all the furniture and muzzle devices, and it's one accurate little metal-spitter. There is a vid somewhere where they hit 365m target first go.

Apparently he got hurt clearing a house when a guy with a knife cut him because the barrel of the dragunov as so long. The guy knew he was coming before my friend was in the room then he had the long barrel plus baynoet to swing around and it still had the scope on the rifle. he didn't like to take it off he felt it keep zero better if he left the scope in place. After that he carried a pistol till he was able to get a 74u off of a wounded APC crewman. He told me that while people didn't like it in general as a close in rifle it worked wonders. especially after he got his hand on the stupid pilot holster to carry it around and a chicom chest rig for mags.

Since it was brought up, here’s a cool little fact about the original Mk18 Mod 0: The reason NSWC Crane, Indiana was tasked with developing that platform, is the Navy wanted a rifle that would fit horizontally through the doorways of ships and submarines, hence why they went with a 10.3” barrel as opposed to a 10.5” (or longer) option. In regards to the suppressor thing, more often than not, most SOCOM cool guys are currently running either the Surefire RC/RC2 or KAC NT4 cans on the end of their modern Mk18 Mod 1 / M4A1 CQBR Block II whenever the situation allows for it.

Hearing protection would need to be available for all family members at the moment of intervention unless your firearm is suppressed, both unlikely during a heightened immediate life/death stress event. As an alternative, there are some excellent PCC’s available such as the Kalashnikov USA KP-9 Vityaz, Stribog SR9, and CZ Scorpion that fills this role admirably. I wish more “gun” channels would emphasize this issue. The ones that do, are typically the best. Forget The others.
