The FR F1 is one of the least understood sniper variants in the U.S. due to it's rarity, but the rifle has been the champion for French soldiers using it on overseas and domestic missions. Notably, the GIGN rescued a school bus of 31 children in 1976 in a daring hostage rescue at Loyada, on the Somalian border.
This rifle was the basis of which the "synchronized sniper" doctrine was developed upon, and the GIGN executed a synchronized sniper mission, knocking out 4 terrorists who were on the school bus at once.
Learn how the French developed the FR F1 from a modified MAS 36 receiver with it's distinctive rear locking lugs, side elevation adjustment APX scopes and centrally aligned bipods.
Thanks to Ian from Forgotten Weapons for loaning us such a rare example. Please see Ian's FR F1 video on his channel, Forgotten Weapons : • French FR-F1 Sniper Ri...
Special thanks to The Gun Room LLC for the FFL support.
The film that features the GIGN / 2e REP in the Loyada incident is "L'intervention" or "15 minutes of war"... while it is entertaining, understand that it is not historically accurate with how the incident went down... but it's a great film to watch for entertainment.

I cracked "French surrender" jokes with my Armée de Terre friends as well, but you'll see what I think of the French Army at 12:30
and if you listen to the way the GIGN responded to terrorists taking a bus full of children at 15:44 , I trust that you will agree that they were not at all cowards. Politics just typically dictate the military in the west.

I spent my childhood in Djibouti and went everyday to school (the École Française de Djibouti) in these same SAVIEM school buses. My bus line was Le Lapin. The Loyada attack happened just a few years before we arrived there, all buses were still operated by French marines and legionnaires to reassure parents. It was also usual to have French MP vehicle following school-buses for extra protection. As kids we were not even fully aware of the extent of what was going on…
Really cool of Ian to lend his rare guns to people with better marksmanship skills to truly show what these guns are capable of.
For sure. Hopefully they get to use his Zastava M76 too.

From my experience with the Lebel, French girls like it rough Henry. Yank that bolt back with elan. Mademoiselle FR respects no half hearted gestures.
I also expect the “less than lively” ejection is a feature to a sniper. Brass sailing into orbit can give away your position.
Yeah I find it hard to believe the GIGN would use a sniper rifle that can't cycle properly. Pretty sure our shooter here was too afraid to break Gun Jesus' ultra-rare rifle, and that's why he was so timid with that bolt handle.
@@TheNefastor This rifle or this reloaded amunitions as a problem : i had use (in the french army) the FRF1 and later the FRF2 (7.62Nato evolution) and had NEVER ejection issues like this...
@@leneanderthalien Brass or the shooter: Ian seemed to have no such issues when he was shooting the gun in his zeroing & on the range videos.
given the widespread experience with Lebels, an angry bolt pull might just be a feature that stuck-- it required some rather forceful pulling because of the elevator for its tube mag, and after literally everyone gets used to that, you start planning around it. No sense having people break things because you didn't work around how French soldiers were habituated to shoot.

I agree. Without context a gun is just a gun, and that's not very interesting. Knowing why it was designed the way it was, and its operational history, that's way more important.
You could not have asked for a better evaluation of the accuracy and function of this rifle. This is quality content of the highest order. Presented by a clearly good shooter, who is also quite obviously an intelligent and articulate guy, produced properly and with another good fellow calling the shots. What more could I ask for as a lover of firearms, history and sensible talk? Nothing. Couldn't ask for more.
The crossover episode we've all been waiting for!
God *damn*. The Loyoda situation would be an absolutely *brutal* 2-gun stage, damn near impossible. Incredible marksmanship from the GIGN.
Step one: Stare at your target for ten hours in 115 F.
Step two: Fire one shot
Step three: Run 180 yard and neutralize your target with a revolver.

If you look hard enough, you'll see that the French Armys methods (explained by Roger Trinquier in La Guerre Moderne and taught at the Ecole de Guerre) are what the US military built on. France pioneered a lot of techniques that are used to this day.
Including the dirtier methods like torture and black sites.
If counterinsurgency interests you, you should read David Gallula's books (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Galula), an other influential french officer that fought the Algeria war and could confront his ideas in real life
The French have always been masters of the secret squirrel arts.
My father served under Colonel Roger Trinquier in Algeria. Funny story - Trinquier always used to carry a walking cane when out on operations. One day out in the bled (the boondocks) going down a goat trail, he whacked a wild bee hive with his cane and kept walking. My father was at the OP when Colonel Trinquier arrived but it was the guys behind him on the trail that had puffed up faces and stings all over their arms.
"What the hell happened to you guys???"
"THAT FUCKING COLONEL!"
Well French military doctrin is what the US military doctrin was build on, all the way from the just after the war of independence, through the period of Napoleonic wars, and again from WW1 where most of the overall doctrines were French.
France is considered one of the most important militaries in history for a reason.

Wow... I am speechless at the history behind this rifle. The reason I found this was because the FR-F1 is featured in Ghost Recon: Breakpoint a game developed by UbiParis. They have been developing the Ghost Recon games for some time now, and one of their signature features is the "Sync Shot", which is exactly what you described the GIGN team preforming. The SL doesn't count to 0 and wait the moment before the shot because video game but damn, the devs add a real GIGN tactic in as a game mechanic. Pretty Legit. Great video!

Heh, English-speakers always have trouble with the silent E at the end of words. I mean they can't even pronounce "Porsche" right. Pro tip : it's like saying "porsh", not "porsha". But hey, as sins go that's not a capital one ;-)
I grew up thinking it was pronounced porsh, and then somehow, in fairly recent years it became porsh-a in uk pronunciation.
There is a certain bloody minded refusal in British linguistic culture to deliberately mispronounce things that are "foreign-sounding," coupled with a tendency to not question people who sound like they know what they're talking about (by which I don't mean experts- who in their right mind listens to experts?!)

If one day you could get your hands on a FRF2 you will be amazed I think. A few improvements were made, like the optic, Scrome J8 with a special reticle made especially for the FRF2 ballistic, the bipod with a target pursuit feature, the barrel get a thermal protection to dissipate the heat and also reduce the mirage in the scope. The caliber also change to 7.62 Otan. Otherwise the rifle is pretty much the same.

France’s anti-terrorist forces are a complex group of assets, however the training disciplines and operational successes of the GIGN match both the SAS & SBS.
GIGN (Group Intervention Gendarmerie Nationale) are part of the Gendarmerie and of the French army. The Gendarmerie perform "policing" operations in rural France and borders (airport security etc). The Police Nationale perform "policing duties" in metropolitan areas like Paris etc. The GIGN equivalent in the Police Nationale were the GIPN (Group Intervention Police Nationale). They evolved into RAID, Research Assistance intervention and Dissuasion (don’t you just love that final term?).
Previously the Gendarmerie reported to the Ministry of Defence, today (though part of the army and perform operations abroad) they report to the Ministry of the Interior.
In terms of inter service rivalry, a retired Gendarme sniper (not GIGN) who served in Kosovo described the “police units” GIPN/RAID as amateur, sighting as proof that they shot their own dog “Diesel” during the Paris 2015 anti-terrorist operation. I suggest the Police units might perhaps also regard the GIGN units as “rustique hard ass thugs".
However both forces are well trained and (as Colonel Tim Collins reflected) worked well together in the simultaneous assaults on the two terriorist groups in 2015, one in the centre of Paris, the other in a rural location north east of the city.
GIGN still use the Manurhin MR73 .357 revolver as a sidearm, being more accurate than their Glock and Sig semi-autos. I am fortunate to own and shoot a MR73 in my collection.
Views expressed by an Irishman (pas Francais) retraité en France.

Forgotten Weapons has an interview where one of the designers (I think) of the FR-F1discussed the changes made to the MAS-36 on which the FR-F1 and F2 were based in order to make it accurate and to reliably repeat accurate shots. One of the differences is that they added steel to the receiver to stiffen it because they determined that under recoil, the MAS-36 flexed too much. It was fine for infantry but not snipers. I think that is one of the crucial changes that made this rifle so accurate and repeatable. The receiver is very stiff and it doesn't move very much because of its size, which is considerably larger than a Mauser. On a Mauser, you can see that it's receiver is basically just a piece of forged bar stock that has been cut out into a receiver. With the MAS-36 and FR-Fx rifles, the magazine well is an integral piece of the receiver forging. They're huge by comparison! The added steel above the action on the FR-Fx rifles means you can't load with stripper clips, but the detachable magazine takes care of that and you've stiffened the receiver even more. Also, the bolt is essentially this big monolithic piece with the lugs at the back where the Mauser bolts have other bits added to them. The front lugs help with accuracy but just holding a Mauser bolt, it has a lot more movement in it.
The French made one hell of a bolt action rifle with the FR-F1. If I had F-U money, I'd love to build a modern FR-F type long range precision rifle in something like 6.5 PRC. Just to see what she can do. Give it a rail with modern optics. The barrel is already free floated so put on whatever stock you like.

The "near" bipod (just in front of the action, or where the magwell would be on modern semi-autos) is also easier for the shooter to adjust without getting out of position or moving the rifle out of position. It's in easy reach of the shooter compared to a bipod mounted out at the end of the forearm.
Fantastic video as always!
Theres something to be said about the simplicity of the turrets being directly in the same axis of travel that they effect the glass and your adjustments.
Hä ? I thought He explaned that the right one is for elevation. All 5 ones I have, the right one is for windage ... so it is flipped to the standard - or not ?
@@heikopanzlaff3789 It is, on the APX the right turret is elevation, top turret is windage. Having the top turret turn to the left or the right, for left or right windage, and the elevation turn up or down, for up or down elevation, makes a huge amount of sense. It's odd that its such a rarity of scope design.
Heiko Panzlaff And op just said that the turrets are used in the axis they effect. On side turrets you turn up or down while on top turrets you turn left or right. So the turret usage on this scope is extremely intuitive since you always turn in the direction in which you want the crosshair to move.
You won't get a better or more honest review and information than you'll find in this video.
Awesome, AWESOME job guys!!!
ok, as a french, that first minute was incredible
Bravo-Zulu! That was an AWESOME Presentation on both the Rifle and the GIGN Operation in Somalia!
Every other community: *rage and drama*
Gun Community: "wanna do a funny cameo? Sure dude, have also my gun! Thanks dude! "
Pretty much gun community usually the friendliest people, i have people all the time ask me questions at the range, because I bring rifles or firearms by which ammo is on sale 😆
I have a regular who brings the same .338 lapua rifle. Hes always curious to what i bring. Every Sunday at noon.
Nah I'd say the gun youtube has its fair share of retarded drama as well. Big reason why I rate 9 Hole and Forgotten Weapons head and shoulders above the rest is because they don't have much to do with it
@@kawauchi2918 usually they are people who play video games and are not real gun enthusiasts or collectors.
I own 32 firearms and enjoy them all for each unique one they are, and don't mind other people shooting mind as long as they buy the ammo. And they know what they are doing
@@kawauchi2918 i agree with your statement however many other communities get triggered by the minimum incomprehension like "what did you say about my waifu?!?!?!", meanwhile this one i feel there is a more understanding of "yep, we cannot screw this up". Feel free to correct me.
Came to see the performance of the FR-F1 based upon Ian's suggestion.
Did not expect and was riveted by the excellently delivered, historical operation review.
Subscribed.
Just as I started this video an heard La Marseillaise playing in the background, I thought that Ian would love this video; and there he is.
The opening was pure class and funny as hell. My hat is off to you all for pulling off such a great opening to the video.
Holy shit how have I never found this channel before now. amazing production quality 😍
I can only echo the other comments here. You Sirs, are among the best of the best on TH-cam!!!!! You should have millions of subscribers! Keep up the good work in spite of TH-cam's censoring.
Ahaha a little hello and thanks from France, love you guys.
this video especially was really cool like not only did they shoot and test it they actually did a bunch of video clips, paper diagrams, and a small overview map going on an in depth discussion about the GIGN and the rifle’s trial by blood and fire, they literally did a more in depth review than any other gun channel i’ve ever seen, this videos definitely up there on best gun reviews
That dial setup seems more inherently intuitive. Want to move point of impact up or down? Move the dial up or down. Left or right, left or right.
Scientific instruments are expensive because they are made to exact tolerances.
Yet they still give different results with different operators. Two people can look through the same heavy, bench-mounted, instrument and see the same thing in a different place.
Thanks for this awesome video dudes ! Fr-F1 is very important in our military history (Yeah, I am french ^^, despite my nickname) but far away less known that FAMAS, MAT 49 ou MAS 36... As a sportive shooter, I hope I will be able to try it one day but I could be tricky since french weapons who get retired ... well ... they are never sold to us ...
Since 2018, new legislation : no automatic firearm can be sold to sportive shooter even after automatic capability has been removed !!! We won't be able to buy any FAMAS anymore ...
And for those who bought one before 2018 (and it was really, really difficult to proceed) they will have to dismantle it when they will stop shooting ... (shame !!!)
SO, you are lucky to have the opportunity to test this beautiful gun...
It's allways a pleasure to watch your videos dudes, and I whish to thanks all people who remember that all french were not cowards during WW2, we had thousands of resistants (FFI) who died sabotaging nazis war machine until operation overlord occured... and after too.
PS : another famous song from the Foreign Legion is : "Le Boudin" ... what is boudin ? Black Pudding !

I know what you are thinking.... but ... I do not advise anyone to laugh about this song with a Legionnaire... they are... really, really badass ! :)
We want asian bob ross back
Hell yeah
Chinese bob ross
Gun Jesus vs Chinese Bob Ross....EPIC rap battle....BEGIN!
Amazing review and awesome history lesson. I didn't know about that bit of history so it was really fascinating both seeing how amazing this rifle performed but also hearing that historical context (and nice bits of editing from that movie). Absolutely amazing job and I'm really happy to see the collaboration between two of the best gun channels on youtube.
Honneur et Fidélité! Valeur et Discipline!
"Sorry. Didn't have a bulletin board, just using this cardboard silhouette as a visual aid. Don't mind me."
It comes from my country ! Proud to be French and proud that you like our stuff in your side of the Atlantic.
Vive la France, God Bless America ! 🇺🇸🇫🇷
That was great! I'll definitely subscribe to this channel. I really liked how you have set up the range and how while you have quite a professional touch, you seem to be able to have fun with this and goof around with it!
Thanks a lot for this thorough, well done, fair, and powerful review of this iconic french firearm, as well as of its performances. It was the embodiment of what I expected, as well as heart-warming.
