Works like a charm, thank you very much. To those who are wondering what this fix does: the problem is the lack of friction between the wheel axle and the axle base, causing slippage. The small piece of paper fixes this by tightening the connection, as mentioned below in the comments.
Some tips I found useful: 1. Use paper tape instead of paper, its much easier. Only one turn is enough (a bit over one turn, so there is no plastic visible). 2. Use a piece a little bit wider than the wheel plastic axis stick. This way, you can roll it with your fingers, creating a funnel/smaller tip at the end to enter the hole easily. 3. Before everything, clean any excess grease on top of the wheel plastic stick for the tape to stick properly and resist friction while entering the hole. Thanks for the video, worked perfectly for me. PS: Do not try glue, it does not seem to work, possibly because of the excess grease on top of the surfaces.

After detaching the wheel, I noticed that my axle actually broke, with the end piece lodged inside of the axel base. I gorilla glued the nub to the wheel and after letting it dry for an hour, it managed to slip inside the base and works well (for now). Excellent video for getting me to the finish line! Hopefully it doesn't break again otherwise I'm just buying a new mouse 🤣
I used teflon tape instead of paper, I tried to wind the tape around the small shaft that goes inside the thingy, you gotta try various times for best results , for me a couple of windings were enough, you gotta make the shaft just little bit thicker in order to prevent the problem to continue , the wheel now works like 99% of the time
I was absolutely sure this wouldn't work, as the stem seemed to fit pretty tightly. I tried the fix it and tested it without screwing any bolts as I was sure I would be removing it. And, you guessed it, the damn thing WORKED!!
Now, this is a short term fix for a deeper problem. The thing is, that the lube that is used for making the wheel run smooth gets inside of the encoder part (which is the part that is soldered to the pcb) and makes the contact go on high resistance (three contacts inside the encoder). Long term you have to either open the encoder, clean the base and the contacts with alcohol, bend the contacts a bit to bring the tension back up and put it bad together (soldering required) or straight up buy a new encoder and replace it. I fixed so many mice like this, had no problem with either of them to this day.
Cool video still, will help a lot of people get it up and running again until they can claim warranty to Logitech. Maybe next time show your fix with a little explanation in real time so people can see what you did there.
@@GSekong Now that is the optimal solution (pun intended) for this oversight in QC. I wonder if you did get it out without soldering? I didn't, but fixed six mice like that until today.
Allow me, the sensor that reads the rotational position of the scroll wheel is keyed to the wheel itself with plastic parts. As a result, over time, this wears and the play between the two parts increases. When the play becomes too much the sensor is able to bound back and forth. This causes the sensor to misread the direction of travel. Taking a sliver of paper and sliding it into the junction and rejoining the two parts results in the play being reduced preventing the bouncing.
@@david.bowerman hmm if you have a brand new mouse does applying a little bit of grease (that white one most commonly found on plastic moving elements where constantly friction betwen them is present) will prevent this from happening ? :)
@@Benyhl2 a small amount of lubicant might help to prevent it but I think it is more deformation as a result of the load area on the hexagonal shaft being so small. Over time the repetitive motion deforms the corners and it becomes sloppy.
Worked like a charm. Had to redo it 5-6 times to get it right. You want a 1/4" square single ply of a bounty wrap it around stem of wheel and put it back into place. Don't forget to push it all the way back in the whole the wheel. Stuffing too much makes the wheel stiff.
What I did: - Disassemble the mouse. - Clean all the dust from all the inside surfaces with a clean and soft brush. - Clean the wheel housing with a cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol making sure no cotton residue stays there. - Clean the little piece of plastic that goes inside the encoder (that grey thing that has the little hole that rotates). - Finally insert a small piece of paper in the hole where that little piece of plastic goes and put the wheel inside again, the piece of paper makes pressure onto that little piece of plastic and it makes it rotate normally again. Now my wheel is finally working fine again. I guess it may be little wear and tear or the dirt itself interfering with the rotation, I've had this mouse for 3 years now and just recently the wheel started going wild.

there is no way logitech stress tested this wheel design. some penny pinching production manager saved 2 cents somewhere and was very pleased with himself.
I was extremely skeptical because it didn't look like the wheel axle was loose from the rotary encoder at all, but the scrolling issue on my G603 was so bad it just made the wheel completely unusable. So I did what you showed in the video. I jammed a piece of paper between the axle and the rotary encoder. I used release liner instead of napkin but to the same effect. Amazingly, it worked. Was there a coupling issue between the axle and the rotary encoder? Or was the problem caused by something with the rotary encoder itself and jamming paper in there somehow pushed it enough to fix it?
The problem is the grease that Logitech used on the encoder causes the shaft to slip. You should also clean the encoder with alcohol. That part wasn't in the video.
Another similar solution. Had the same issue in a almost new g603. Firmware updates didnt work. So I opened it in this same way, and had to open the sensor of the wheel, a little bit more difficult, have to do a lot of strength without breaking or throwing everything into the air. Inside the contactors had some oil, making a kind of short circuit. Clean it and asamble. Hopefully u fix it! I did..
@@dennisleegy Its awesome that you were able to figure out what was wrong. I thought it was more complicated like some sort of sensor failing. Whats crazy is I have the m515 and its been going strong for almost 10 years without issue and it cost like 15 compared to the g603 with was like 50. I don't think I'm going to get logitech stuff going forward.
Another person grateful for your video here! Thanks! Took a little while for me to get a perfect paper size. Was also a little worried that the paper could fall out from the other end, so I just dabbed the paper on a glue stick and instead of placing it directly in the hole, I jammed the bar back in the hole with the paper covering over the end of the bar.
Hey bud I’m having this issue with a G603 and G703. The only thing I couldn’t tell from the video is how the paper inserted. Do you roll it to insert like a cylinder or just slide it in and then the wheel presses up against it? Is it folder or make it thicker?
you just need to insert enough that when you insert the wheel its firm and stiff but not too stiff.. and also i would advise that you wash the whole encoder in in alcohol or electronic spray as to remove the lubricant that comes on it from the factory
Thanks a lot, obviously this worked for me. But scrolling trough the comments i noticed one thing - nobody is mentioning Logitech. This is poor build quality, plain and simple. I bought two Logitech G series mice, one with cable for my PC and wireless for my laptop (i'm not a gamer i just like nice things and i'm old enough to be able to afford them) and this is what i get for 120€? Same problem on both of them... This video thought me two things, how to fix my mouse wheel and to never buy Logitech again..
Wasn't the issue I had with my mouse (after dismantling it I found that hexagonal part of axel that rotates scroll actuator broke and that remaining part didn't rotate it anymore. Tried fixing the broken part but nah, to fragile. So I did what he did, shimmed a piece of paper between hexagonal part in the actuator and reminder of the hexagonal axel. Works fine.
I had issues with the scroll wheel going in random directions as well as the left button registering multiple clicks... super annoying. Here's how to fix it: Grab a waterpik water flosser. Fill it with isopropyl alcohol. Set it to maximum pressure. Take the mouse apart until you see the buttons and the rotary encoder. Remove batteries&unplug. Use the high pressure jet isopropyl to spray buttons and the rotary actuator and the buttons. Let it dry for a day in a low humidity environment with a lot of air movement (I put mine on the exhaust port of a dehumidifier). Done! Both the wheel and the buttons work again perfectly. The issue comes from crap building up inside the mechanical actuators. These sensors rely on metal parts touching each other to sense that they're being moved/pressed. With normal use the parts get dust/debris and tiny plastic shavings building up inside, interfering with the metals making proper contact. You can try to open the parts, but it's incredibly difficult to do that without breaking them because they're so small. The waterpik is like a miniature pressure washer. The high pressure jet of isopropyl gets into the parts easily and flushes out the debris. Since alcohol has a fairly low boiling point, it quickly evaporates, and things work again like new.
wow thanks so much for this. i had a g403 that got this then i got a g703 and the same thing happened. im gonna attempt this fix on them both, ive been using my old wired mouse because of how annoying it is to not have a scroll wheel so if it works im gonna be super happy becauser i definitely prefer using the wireless ones

That part wasn't in the video.
you don't even need the paper. You just need to clean the spool and the mouse wheel axial. After that, I put gun oil to lubricate it.
Thank you! Fixed my g203, also got a chance to clean my scroll wheel!
Great
Thanks for your help. 😎👏🏻
It worked
Thanks man saved my mouse.
follow exactly on dismantle and inserted a small paper... wow! legit fix!
I did..
And this is the main problem. I also cleaned it with alcohol and now it works great!
Its insane that this worked
Lol ikr
@@dennisleegy Logitech support were sooo shit too. Trying to get me to buy another one.
@@UKgamer87 I had no choice but to create my own fix. I live in south america but I bought it from the US so I had no warranty coverage
At the most important moment the image is out of focus and you can't see what you are doing - thanks for nothing
Sorry bro.
entitled prick
Thanks a lot, obviously this worked for me. But scrolling trough the comments i noticed one thing - nobody is mentioning Logitech. This is poor build quality, plain and simple. I bought two Logitech G series mice, one with cable for my PC and wireless for my laptop (i'm not a gamer i just like nice things and i'm old enough to be able to afford them) and this is what i get for 120€? Same problem on both of them...
This video thought me two things, how to fix my mouse wheel and to never buy Logitech again..
Logitech was a great brand for years but they need to fix this problem
Wasn't the issue I had with my mouse (after dismantling it I found that hexagonal part of axel that rotates scroll actuator broke and that remaining part didn't rotate it anymore. Tried fixing the broken part but nah, to fragile. So I did what he did, shimmed a piece of paper between hexagonal part in the actuator and reminder of the hexagonal axel. Works fine.
This is such a common issue for Logitech mice. I got this mouse for Christmas and the scroll wheel broke 3 months after.
Logitech needs to do better
Thanks man! worked perfectly :D
I actually did soaked mines with isopropyl but it wasn't recorded. passed the heat gun a few times over it and worked right away
@@dennisleegy heat gun works too but things melt fast if you're not careful.
I frecking love you man. Now my wheel is tight asf without misreads
Amazing thx you, did it with teflon tape
OMG love you :)
wow thanks so much for this. i had a g403 that got this then i got a g703 and the same thing happened. im gonna attempt this fix on them both, ive been using my old wired mouse because of how annoying it is to not have a scroll wheel so if it works im gonna be super happy becauser i definitely prefer using the wireless ones
What's the screwdriver size for those phillips screw that you're using?
I do not know. They usually comes with phone repair kits
Music sucks, but it works like magic. Thanks, dude
I have no clue, what he was doing there... he cut something and put it in somewhere, but where and how it is supposed to be... no clue. Would be nice if you would explain it
not sure of what you did but i think you tighten the axle that connects the mouse wheel to the board?
I placed a small piece of paper between the axle and the hole that it goes in to tighten it
@@dennisleegy thanks!
@@dennisleegy BIG THANKS BRO! mine's fixed now!
explained nothing but it works
thx works like a charm ,only the preciesion part could be in slomo or normal speeds :p
It Works! THank you bro!
No problem
Finally it works :D Thank you so much!
It worked, thank you!
Workd, I didn't do paper, but did catton!
Hello Dennis! I repair the scroll wheel, but some buttons now dont function. I know its because the cable that you put in 3:00 minutes. I put the cable and seams ok, but it is not working correctly. Do you have any idea what it might be?
which buttons don't work the side buttons?
@@dennisleegy now i think all! Sometimes the left and one of the sides work. Sometimes dont work nothing :(
@@Dr86Jones I believed you may have damaged your ribbon strip or it may not be inserted into the socket firmly. Recheck the ribbon and ensure its doesn't have any physical damage and check that it's inserted fully and secured firmly
@@dennisleegy I don't know if it's damaged. I don't get much of this. But it is not firm. if I pull it slightly it comes out easily.
@@Dr86Jones that means it's not connected firmly u need to push the cable into the socket maybe about 2mm until it can't go any further and then press in the little locking mechanism on the socket
opened mine, a newer version, and issue is not lack of grip like yours, the wheel encoder is different, it goes back because the gear roulette has teeth, and it sometimes pushes the wheel back when you stop or start moving it.
Fixed my G603. Thank you!
Thank you so much it works
