  • I've had a few questions on how the Honda XR650L runs on the highway. In this video we find out! I run a 14 tooth XR650R counter shaft sprocket, so the gearing is lower than stock.

    I used mine to commute on a 2 lane mountain road (Ortega Hwy, from San Juan Capistrano to Lake Elsinore) for almost 30,000, never had a problem...until yesterday. Transmission. I've ridden freeways and, aside from becoming a little uncomfortable after a few hours, it rides fine up to 80-85. I don't mind hitting that speed, but i won't keep it there long. I normally ride 65 to 70 on the freeway and it's always felt pretty good. It does burn some oil. And riding up and down the mountain, 45 to 50 mpg. The only issue i ever had is when I don't have a knobby on the front, in the dirt it can be treacherous. It washes out so easily and, between the weight and torque, it's fun to keep it upright.
    Now as for my transmission. I don't know transmissions at all, I haven't worked on a bike in over 40 years, but I've got TH-cam!

    Yeah I also have a 650L and can confirm that there is no handle bar shake even at top speed which for me (with stock gearing) about 95-100 mph is absolutely max. And the best speed for highway cruising for minimal vibration and stress on the engine is about 55-60mph (in my opinion). Can pull 3rd gear wheelies with a little work with the clutch and a tug at the bars. I love my bike and will probably keep it either me or it gives up 😂

      Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it. Yeah, I agree. Comfortable cruising speed is around 60mph for me. At 75mph it will become tiring after a while. It is an awesome bike for mixed riding though. Enjoy your XR!

      You said it, the RFVC doesn't like over revviyng, and stresses over 80-95mph. I think the liquid-cooled engine is built for high-revs on longtime riding, in that case sure it's better than the air-cooled. As I remember, the 650 XR LIQUID was a beast on tracks during the baja races.

    XR650L can be ridden up to 60mph with relatively good stability, anything over, especially, over 70moh, and the front end gets super light and you feel like you have little control of the front end.

    I just got a 250cc Chinese bike and have been loving it. Only thing is I really don't feel comfortable taking it out on the busy highways. Even with the most top end gearing people hardly get 70mph (113 km/ph) out of them wide open. And with this hilly terrain and no torque...
    This 650 is the endgame bike for me

    • @GreaseAndGravel
      @GreaseAndGravel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that is a problem with the smaller bikes. Our cruising speed on the 200cc Chinese bikes were 80kph, but in most of Africa that is fast enough. A 650 is enough for most situations.

    Thinking of getting this or the Dr 650 to 800, is it the female spline that is thinner on the 14 tooth or the pitch? If this is the case, does the 17 tooth have a thick spline as well.

    • @GreaseAndGravel
      @GreaseAndGravel  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd get the DR650. The original CS sprocket is too thin so the contact with the shaft is only 8mm. The aftermarket Fritzco sprocket or an XRR sprocket works well. I made a video on both (check out my XR playlist). I tried a 16 tooth, but it was too large (the diameter)... so the chain touched the engine case.
