- In today’s video I talk about the top 5 reasons I think everyone should start euro nymphing. This can be a bit of hot topic but I’m not sure that it should be as polarizing as people are making it out to be. It’s fun and another tool in your fly fishing toolbox. Euro nymphing is also great for beginners, since it is a more intuitive method, and objectively easier. Beginners can focus more on presentation, strike detection, and catching/landing fish; all while getting a stronger feedback signal on whether they're doing things correctly. A beginner will advance much more quickly catching 10+ fish in a day vs. a few (or none). Contrast this with traditional fly fishing, which requires a technical cast, mending, slower reaction and less sensitivity to strikes -- a beginner often loses interest in the sport and can become discouraged.
You will definitely catch more fish starting out euro nymphing, that's for sure :)
I think you really nailed the reasons, especially #1. Those were some truly beautiful, healthy looking fish. I wish everyone treated them with the respect that you always show them.

I agree completely that it makes you a better fisherman. I've found that I've set a hook when dry fly fishing just because of instinct when fishing in a shadow of under a bridge because of cues I picked up on while euro nymphing. I just somehow knew a fish was on, even though I couldn't see a strike. I've also been able to embrace creative ways to cast to fish a traditional roll cast or something wouldn't present the fly adequately. Makes you such a better angler.

Great video, and some nice catches! It’s definitely my favorite method out on the water ! I also throw a dry and use streamers! It good to keep all your options open out there . Being able to adapt to conditions can make for a successful day ! Tight lines

It absolutely is!!! I wasted 25 years indicator fishing until 2 years ago when I jumped on the train as it gained popularity. Wished it would have 24 years ago!! But then it was called tight line nymphing, tungsten makes all the difference in the world in my mind!!!!

Great points. Same for me, euro nymphing is helping my strike detection as well as understanding structure and depth. It also reinforces the importance of the "short game" which is also true with swinging. Short casts can give you more control over presentation. This is such a great channel. Thanks!

I love the versatility of the euro setup. Great close dry dropper fishing, jigged streamers, etc. Plus you learn faster with some positive reinforcement and more opportunities to play fish.

I'm in Texas so i have to watch more videos of fishing than fish and I'm liking yours. I 100% agree about the "another tool in the toolbox" statement. I also say fish the way you enjoy. Never been to an ice cream parlor with one flavor, as I like to say. I even have a tenkara rod. Also liking those light pink beads more and more.

Great video. We all need to encourage others to get into the sport of fishing and Euro nymphing is a good way to get newbies into the sport or old farts like myself to try something new. I have been contemplating about whether I should try it out. Maybe next season. Thanks for sharing.

Can't argue with any of those points. My #6, and 7 would be it's easier to be more tactical with your casts. Since you're fishing close, you can more easily get the flies in and around structure and get them away from submerged structure. Next, I tangle way less. Since you're not casting a fly line, you're not tempted to do a back cast, so I rarely tangle when I euro nymph.
Gosh that less tangled one is such a good point! I haven’t chucked an indicator in so long I forgot about it lol
Hey man, great video. As alluded to a couple times before, euro nymphing is great for beginners. My 10-year-old euro nymphs because it's a heck of a lot easier than throwing an indicator, or a dry. Oooooohhhhh the tangles! Ooooooohhhh the snags!
So that being said, I would say a 6th reason should be added to the list: "much easier for beginners."

Been euro nymphing exclusively for a few years. All points you laid out are exactly correct. One you missed is you can move across the stream in a methodical way and you don’t have to move that much up or down the stream unless you want to. I have been content fishing a smaller section of a stream slowly and throughly. Tight lines

That island at 6:28 is one of my fav spots. Caught a beast right at the tail of that one time. Was super jazzed and got to the shore and almost stepped on a massive sleeping rattler.
Ha yeah, I’ve hooked some really nice fish in that area. I was happy to not see any snakes this time out. Last trip out there I almost stepped on two! I’m super careful that’s for sure

Depends on the water I'm faced with. I carry flies in all weights, from unweighted to 4mm tungsten so I can switch based on the water.
All good reasons for sure. Could explain your setup in your videos? Like the rod weight and length for each run. It appears that you change up from time to time depending on the situation.
I try to do that in the videos as mush as possible, I actually used the same setup this entire day :)
Definitely pick up 2-3 more fish per outing as euro nymphing definitely more sensitive to those very subtle takes

I can think of two more: Your flies are more *in* the water, fishing, instead of flying in the air, false-casting. The second is that it allows you to fish difficult spots where back-casting with long false-casting is difficult or impossible.

How long sighter material do you use. Assuming you go straight sighter. To fly line?
I use straight 4x sighter material from the fly line to the tippet ring, that’s it!
@@FlyingTies how many feet? I’m only asking Bc it seems like you cast a long way. At least it looks that way on camera. But I’m assuming your fly line is staying within your guides. So no sag. I mostly fish small streams so a lot of the time I’m fishing under the rod tip. I want to learn to fish at distance. I usually use 18’ of 3x sighter. Do I need to increase the length of sighter I use?
I made a video a few weeks back that goes through all the exacts of what I’m doing but I actually only use 14’ of sighter for my leader and 3-5’ of tippet material so it’s usually in the 17-19’ range total. I always try to fish as close to me as possible but sometimes you do need a bit longer cast for the situation you are facing
Any euro nymph rod recommendations for a beginner?
Echo shadow X, Orvis Clearwater, and Cortland Nymph are all great lower priced rods. Can’t really go wrong with any of them. The new G Loomis Euro rods are sweet but more $$

@@featherstofins1985 I haven’t used the Sense but I have handle both and I think I would go with the Loomis, that’s just me :) be sure to handle them in the shop before you jump in head first

Why is it called Euro nymphing looks to me like it’s what I’ve been doing since I started fly fishing 40 plus years ago I call it straight line 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ and if you’re using a fly rod and an artificial hand tied fly IT’S FLY FISHING END OF STORY
