    Best thing about this video is that even a pro can go long periods of time without catching a thing... makes me not feel so bad. Nice work guys!

    Really loved this video. Watching a pro like Russ navigate the challenge of being in great water and having to figure out the right setup was so helpful. This is the process I feel like I try to go through every time Im on the water so hearing Russ talk his process out loud is gold.

    Pleasure to view and learn, Russ. And so refreshing you all didn’t edit out the real stuff, like a tree snag or missed take.

    This series is so good. Love the talk and the split screen and the whole deal. Thanks! // Sometimes it can be difficult to see the rod and line and certainly where the flies land depending on light, height of drone, etc. I know it would affect the "purity"* of the shot, but it will be so cool to have a little flash of graphic, maybe a little colored circle when/where the fly hits the water. Just to key in quicker and see where the angler is casting.
    * Makes me think of when people freak out with tracer lines on televised hockey!

    Really enjoyed watching this, over the past 2 days I have spent about 12 hours in American fork canyon catching 8 to 12 in browns, new place, lost my net, not the point of my comment, but what I really want to know is how do you choose what fly to use when and where? On day 1 I caught several fish on a parachute Adams, and a bright orange beaded sow bug. On day 2 didn’t get a bite in 2 hours, but caught everything that day on a pheasant tail looking copper John that I forgot I had. I’m not really set up for nymphing though.

    Stopped by the shop a couple of days ago and Kevin hooked my bro-n-law and I up with some flies. I was intent on trying euro for the 1st time. Kevin showed me some good leader selections and shared a little euro theory. Yesterday fished the dream stream. Good water to start on. Low flow, clear, deep pools. Caught 4 bows and 1 brown, had a few others on. Steep learning curve for sure. One question, though: Do you WANT your lowest nymph bouncing along the bottom, or do you want to estimate the depth and have that nymph just occasionally hitting bottom?
    I've caught the euro nymph bug for sure. Now to get a suitable rod/reel setup. Casting a nymph on leader/tippet on a 5wt was like casting a shrimp with a12wt. My shoulder was actually sore last night 🤣.

      Chris! I touched base with Russ and he confirmed the following..."So for this…just like a bobber, touching the bottom every now and then is ideal, but typically you don’t want to be dragging flies on the bottom or never finding the bottom."
      Thanks for swinging by!

      @@TroutsFlyFishing That makes total sense now. I was freaking out, thinking of taking this method to the BigT and spending the entire day getting hung up. 🤣
      Merry Christmas to everyone there!

    Love that the first thing you did while euro nymphing is pick up a dry fly rod…

      Russ...like any of us...can't resist a rising fish.

  • @robertlynn7332
    @robertlynn7332 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You know, trout are pretty conditioned to avoid being eaten by things hovering in the air over the stream- eagles, osprey, etc. Do you think that maybe the drone was spooking them?

    • @TroutsFlyFishing
      @TroutsFlyFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's always a chance. I generally flew it downstream or high above the water to try and avoid that potential issue. In the end, Russ found the formula that worked. We ran out of drone batteries, but Russ put quite a few more in the net after he put together the right formula...and maybe the drone being gone. 😂

      @@TroutsFlyFishing I remember fishing in my local river (the Bitterroot) and a guy in an ultralight plane kept flying overhead, probably 400' above me. Every time his shadow would cross the water the fish would spook for the next 20 minutes or so. Really annoying

      Or a micro leach, but I think you will need a heavier anchor fly to make sure it gets down with either of them???

    You said you have a level line, what does that mean?

    • @TroutsFlyFishing
      @TroutsFlyFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That means that the fly line doesn't have a taper like the more traditional Weight Forward and Double Taper fly lines. This means casting will work a little bit differently and the taper of the fly line won't aid as much in "loading" the fly rod.
