    Olive wooly bugger, elk hair caddis, deer hair caddis, sexy waltz worm, hares ear. Very traditional but each tried and true and just flat out catch fish

    One I would definitely not be without is a PCP jig nymph. It just kills on my local water which is the same as yours. Another is the Duracell jig nymph. I’m with ya on your perdigon choice and I too would lean to olive for the streamer color on our particular river. Great video. It had to be difficult to just come up with 5.

    I've been fishing hard since may. I've heard people say over and over "its not the fly" but my experience and the data from others experiences tells me it certainly is the fly. I fished dozens of flies for hours upon hours on the Provo river. 1 fly outfished every other by more than 10 times. Red wire wrapped around a swimming larvae style hook with a ping band in the middle. The 2nd best fly was just a hook with grey squirrel fir tied on it and a red/orange hot spot by the 3.5mm bead. These 2 flies caught more fish than all the others combined and multiplied 10 fold. Naturally if I got skunked a for roughly 20-30 hours on a fly of various sizes I dropped it. Other flies such as pheasant tails only worked in sizes of 18 or smaller. and even then only caught 1 fish in 2 dozen hours.

      The vast majority of the time it’s not the fly, but I’m not going to convince you of that 😂

      That may have been depth. I think flies functionality is much more important than the pattern. Even if they prefer a pheasant tail, a heavier walts worm that actually gets to the fish is going to catch more. Presentation > size > pattern

    Great exercise!!! Here's my list: 1) crawdad zirdle bug, 2) spanish bullet perdigon with hot spot, 3) duracell jig, 4) adams, and 5) stimulator. I like your first pick of a streamer. The last several years, I've always tried on a streamer of some type with my euro setup to start the day with. The crawdad zirdle bug has got to be my top streamer since it represents a crawdad, bait fish, and even stoneflies.

    I think you got it covered. The west coast of BC isn’t really known for dry fly fishing, so I might sub in a squirmy worm instead for your dry fly choice. I would easily rock your other 4 patterns in my local waters!

    1. Nice monstera.
    2. Saw a lot of nice books - which ones would you recommend for someone starting to tie? (Oregon)

    Forgot junk flies! But my streamer would be my slump buster variant and dry would have to be a morrish hopper and 2 nymphs would be France fly and a little mayfly pattern I tie! Junk flies would be eggstacy egg!

    You should do a trip where you just take the 5 flies.. it would be beast!!!! Take multiples of each just in case but just 5 patterns..

    Hey bud. Weird question to ask publicly. My step son is graduating college in middle May. In Portland OR. You seem like you are out in the PNW. But could be 600mi from Portland. Just wondering if you knew any trout streams near Portland. I only found lakes. And lower Deshutes. I really don’t want to pay for a guide. Any help if any you can point me in would be appreciated.

    My pick of top 5 flies that people just don't use ever is ants. I have no idea why people don't fish these. My only difference is I prefer the cubbard shelf ant I even add weight and fish it wet.
    In Pennsylvania I would have to have a scud shrimp pattern.

  • @Jkannen

    How many patterns do you tend to bring with on a day on the river? Wide variety or fairly minimal? Asking as I’m building my own box which set out to be minimal but is already branching out a lot haha

    • @FlyingTies
      @FlyingTies  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on which box you are talking about 😂 but I’ve simplified my nymph box down to 6 total patterns. I just have them in lots of sizes and weights
