How Far Can Summon Autopark Be Pushed? // Tesla Model 3 & Y

  • Summon Autopark is one of those features we like to tell our friends it can do but never really use. I believe it represents what the car is capable of and what it will be able to do in the future with self parking in malls etc.
    Today I pushed this as far as I could think of with this feature. Enjoy.
    What's in this video:
    1:50 - Trusting the sensors
    3:56 - Autopark settings
    5:55 - How to engage
    7:16 - Testing forward
    9:20 - Testing backwards
    11:40 - Backing up into 10 foot gap test
    11:47 - Backing up into 9 foot gap test
    13:00 - Backing up from max distance in 9 foot gap
    14:30 - Backing up into 8 foot gap test
    15:35 - Forwards through 8 foot gap test
    16:33 - What gap is too narrow?
    17:00 - What type of obstacles will stop summon?
    19:45 - Why use Summon Autopark?
    22:00 - Summon over speed bump (towels I don't have speed bumps)

    The auto-park capability is far more than a parlor trick. It makes it possible for us to own our Model Y, despite having an older townhome with a very narrow single-car garage. We need to take advantage of the wonderful capacity to have the car automatically retract the sideview mirrors whenever we are home. Auto-park then moves the car into our garage with about 5 inches to spare on each side at the doorway. We don’t feel comfortable doing that manually.

    • @CfTesla
      @CfTesla  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is brillian! I never thought of that. This actually really helps becuase I have been asked before if you can fold a mirror as you are driving in and this is the solution. Thank you! I will pin your comment for a bit.

    Excellent and best review of this feature. My garage is a 1 car garage with a 10 feet rock wall on the passenger side. After watching your review I enabled my 2018 Tesla Model 3 to self park as my left eye does not give me 3D perfect distance on the drivers side and l use Home Link to open the Door. You confirmed my suspicion that the car should be straight and not at an angle for best entrance. I will test exit of garage today. My neighbors have hit their garages over the past 2 decades where they have single car garages and Supervised FSD 12.3.4 would solve that problem in tight spaces. I love FSD 12.3.4 ! Thanks a million 😊.

    My model three with full self drive I hope is going to learn how to back into my three car garage with my wife’s car pulled in next to it and a garage vertical support at the other side of my car that I have scraped in the past before I have been inspired by your video to learn to use backward summon. The driveway in front of my garage has a mild slope upward and I remember some difficulties using summon but if I can move my car very close to the garage door before I exit the car I will see if I can be successful. Thank you for your inspiration and education

    This was cool! I have dogs that get to use the garage all day so I can’t open my garage when I arrive home because if the husky gets out I’m gonna spend hours catching him. This would allow me to be sure the dogs are out of the garage and not have to get back in the car just to pull it inside. So I’m pretty stoked about the feature. Still waiting on my VIN to be assigned. Hope to take delivery by mid March. Thanks for the video!

    Wow, another gift/update from Tesla. Thanks for the lesson, as I did not know my M3 would do that. I have used Auto Summons as a trick to wow friends. Living in Kitsap Peninsula, I never had to use the Auto Summon , but dropped off a Friend at Emerald Queen , and found my Doors blocks, my two (rude?) trucks. AutoSum solve the problem, and I just smiled I don't live near the rude neighbor of your county. Again thank, good video.

    One useful way that I use Summon is when I am detailing my tires. I don’t like to slop the tire dressing that I use all over my driveway concrete. So after summoning the car out of the garage, and detailing the paint and the glass, I take on the tires. I place a 2ft by 2ft square of cardboard centered in front of each tire, and then “summon” the car forward so that each tire is centered on the cardboard. Then I detail the tires, and only make a mess on the cardboard. If you chose to drive the car onto the cardboard, you’ll waste time getting out of the car to check the position, and then get back in to try again. It’s very simple to summon it onto the cardboard in a perfectly centered position!

    I love the auto park feature because my garage is a little narrow and I have a wife and two kids. It's much easier to get everyone out of the car while in the driveway and have it park in the garage. Having said that I have noticed that my car can't back up over my 1/4-1/2" bump to get into the garage. It only spends a few seconds trying before quitting. It seems to do fine parking forward.

    Great video - thanks! I live in the UK, where our standard garage opening is width is 7 feet (we used to have very small cars!) - just less than 8 inches wider that the M3 with mirrors folded and 1 3/4 inches wider when the mirrors are unfolded. So parking my M3 is a challenge - and it needs to go into the garage at a slight angle so that there is enough room to get squeeze out as the width of the garage itself is only 8 foot wide. As long as the car is reasonably well centred, summon parks it beautifully and reverses out equally perfectly. My only problem is that LTE signal is poor and if the weather is humid, the signal strength degrades which means that summon won't work. So I was a little surprised that your experiment with your garbage bin only worked for 8 foot 6 inches!

    • @CfTesla
      @CfTesla  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya i have heard this from a few people I am glad this worked for you. Remember this is not summon where I press it to go forward or backward on my phone this is the autopark function so it may work differently...?

    I use it often but not to pull in - only to pull out. My garage is kind of tight. People can't get in easily from the passenger side so I'll summon the car out while we are gathering coats and putting on shoes etc. and let the family load up outside where there is more room.

    now i don't know why tesla take it out and put it with the FSD package!!!??

    very interesting, i have a "box" and it s aprox 9 feet wide at the door level, then it s a bit wider almost 10 feet, and the issue is that i need some room to get in or out even when parked... so the car should not be centered, at least in the end of the process, so the idea would be that the car should be able to make a slight "parallel parking" to leave space after it has entered the door step...
    and it would be great also to be able to go closer to the front/back wall , 8 inches is too wide also for me, i need to be at 3 or 4 inches... to be able to close the door

    I have to back in to charge. I have a good size garage, but I want as much space possible between my two cars so I don't get door dings when the family get in and out. Looks like autopark will always center in the space, which is not what would work for me. Am I correct?? If it could put the car where I need it, it would help me justify the $10K to upgrade our MY. But I bet that is not the case.

  • @raywflam
    @raywflam 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the very comprehensive video on Summon. Actually I do use Summon everyday because my garage is so small that if I park my Model Y head-in, I won’t be able to get out of the car because of the garage side wall. Backing in would create another problem because my charging cable is too short to reach the charge port. For me, 8 out of 10 times Summon works fine. From time to time Summon stops in the middle of its track and I will have to re-Summon. Or I might get the message “Summon is disconnected”. This usually happens when I back out of the garage. For entering the garage, the car has to be centered and pointing straight ahead. If not, the car would sometimes serve towards the garage side wall which is closer to the car. Weird! That’s why I always stand watch over Summon and am ready to intervene.

    I use the backup auto-park feature every time, and never park the car manually in my garage. The reason is that at the head of my garage is my washer/dryer, which shortens the length of my garage. Therefore, I want an exact distance in the front and the back so that I can easily walk all the way around my car, when the garage door is closed. Manually, I would have to keep tapping the pedal and sometimes get too close, and have to go forward. Also, I have HomeLink installed, so after my Tesla parks itself, it automatically closes the garage door, while I stand there with my charge cable ready to plug in when the car turns off.

    Can't find my original comment about not having this Autopark feature, but I figured out why my 2020 M3P FSD didn't work when pressing in the Park button two times. To get this feature, you must go into the Summons settings and make sure you disable the requirement for Continuous Pressing the summons button. After I changed that setting, the Autopark screen popped up after pressing the Park button two times.

    I haven't tried auto park in my garage yet with my model 3. Because it's a single spot with a narrow entrance that opens to the left and the car has to make a left turn, which I do each time because of the location of my washer/dryer which sort of shares space with that garage spot. Maybe you can try a test where the car has to turn a bit to avoid an object rather than straight in. I'm not sure I'm brave enough for that yet. Nice video though showing forward and reverse into the garage.

    What if the car is significantly mis-aligned to the garage opening? The challenge for our car is that 1) you need to back it in to set it up for charging and 2) its takes at least 1-2 forward/reverse cycles to align the car tot he garage opening. My wife hates this. I frequently get called outside to pull it in for her.
