    Tesla have just released the Enhanced Autopilot package again, half the price of full self drive, but is it worth the upgrade in the UK?
    I take you through the order process and then test some of the features such as summon, auto lane change, navigate on autopilot and auto park. Finally, I give you my honest opinion - is it worth £3,400?

    I have a Model 3 Long Range delivered in September 2019 with Full Self Driving. The car is fantastic and a delight to drive every day. But the Full Self Driving is near useless. Honestly, I wish I hadn’t opted for FSD when I placed the order. The car will summon out of our garage just fine. But go back in on summon? No chance. The self parking was interesting especially as you are not required to use the throttle or select gears, but it takes for ages to accomplish what I can do with a couple of turns of the wheel. Honestly, our other car, a Ford Focus Titanium X does auto parking better. I never thought I’d find myself admitting that. Plus the rear view camera guidelines are way more intuitive, accurate and helpful in the Ford. Finally, I’ve had enough of of the heart stopping moments caused when Navigate On Autopilot is engaged on dual carriageways and motorways. Our car inexplicably brakes and/or swerves from time to time, typically when approaching trucks, and cannot be relied on to use the correct lane leaving motorways. Moreover, autopilot used to react to changing speed limits, but it stopped doing this a few months ago following an over-the-air update. And finally, I completely agree with you that you’re better off and will be safer changing lanes yourself on dual carriageways and motorways. For anyone thinking of buying a Tesla, don’t hesitate. The car is utterly fantastic. Just don’t include the FSD or Enhanced Autopilot ‘upgrades’. They’re nothing of the sort.

      FSD never seemed a good fit given how risk adverse the EU is. They limit how fast the car is allowed to turn the steering when driving which perversely means it’s more likely to cause an accident due to either running off the road, crossing into another lane or it just giving up on steering.

      This is a good review and supports my own research. I don’t have an EV yet, but have done a lot of investigation into them, and especially Teslas, and almost every YT video I’ve seen of a driver using FSD, there’s had to be some level of intervention to avoid issues. It seems OK on the bigger roads in the US, but on minor roads, and on many UK roads, you just can’t rely on FSD doing things safely. At least not yet. I feel sorry for people who have paid for FSD expecting the ‘imminent’ release of a fully-functional FSD, and years later are still waiting for it. And don’t get me started on why you can’t currently transfer FSD to a new car if you upgrade....!

      I've still got a new MX on order (the one with the yoke) with the FSD option. Left it on the order as it might be worth the money by the time it's delivered sometime on 2022.

    Thank you for this. I did a test drive on a Tesla 3 Performance and loved it. Spoke to 2 salesmen and when asked about the options, they disagreed. One said the standard autopilot whilst the other said he enjoyed FSD on his own Tesla and is worth it from the standpoint of usage and also it is an investment before it is developed and the price is increased as it has been in the US. I was left confused and thought I'd order one without and consider upgrading later like you did. Watching this video, I think standard autopilot is the way forward for me.

    I have a 2021 SR+ and when in auto pilot, my car changes the speed when I go Inbetween different speed zones. For example, going 40 and then enter a 30, the car sees the sign and changes the speed on its own to 30mph. Not sure why yours doesn't? I just have standard auto pilot. Just FYI!

  • @douglasmartyn

    I purchased enhanced autopilot and to.be honest after a couple of days I felt much like yourself but I persisted and I find autopilot with lane change is a huge improvement and with nav on autopilot you get used to it and a indication with the slightest turn on the wheel moves the car across lanes. Also don’t forget it does navigate you and so you don’t miss exits and it gets you in the correct lane as well. I fully understand however that this is not as good as the us system however I was encouraged to read the RAC saying today they expected the system to be approved for motorways later this summer removing the requirement to touch the wheel and allowing self driving by the car. Well we will see hope they are right.

    • @WhatTheTesla

    Auto lane change for slow vehicles is part of navigate on autopilot, which is not on if you don’t have a destination in. Or Maybe it’s just different in the US.
    Also, you can press down once on the drive selector to update the speed limit once it has changed.

    Hi loving the videos, Just wondering, when you click the speed signs for the car to speed up and slow down on autopilot. Does this happen with the basic autopilot or does it only come with enhanced autopilot onwards.
    Thanks in advance

    • @WhatTheTesla
      @WhatTheTesla  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael. So sometimes it does change automatically but not always and it's often too slow to change i.e. doesn't slow down until you've gone past the sign by which you've travelled hundreds of meters. With standard autopilot this is also the same and I can confirm that if you tap the speed or pull down on the stick again it also sets the speed but is also too slow to change. Hope that helps.

    @WhattheTesla Very strange - I have a mid-2018 M3 SR+ in the US. I don't even have enhanced AP, just "autosteer". The speed limit adjustment works automatically without tapping the screen, as does autofollow distance. For holding the wheel, just hold light hand pressure down in the bottom corner of the inside of the steering wheel. It detects you're there and you can relax. (Unless they've disabled that in UK too.) It does steer a bit too tightly in the US to the center line (left side of the car) for my liking, and on a winding road with spotty lines you just don't even want to deal with AS/AP/EAP. I use just autosteer for my 40 mile commute on the highway and it has reduced my stress immensely.

      Very few cars do this automatically as you can imagine a car reading a sign on the back of a truck (or when passing a junction with a different limit) then slowing down or speeding up with no human interaction. This is why Tesla require human action to confirm.

    They could probably make some money by breaking out some features separately. Auto lane change and Auto park they could sell as unlockable options (pre or post sales) for several hundred quid each - probably more for auto park. By hiding Auto park in particular behind FSD most people won’t consider it. And that also then exposes them to the competition which will have options for auto parking at much lower cost (and surround view cameras which I think is another miss by Tesla but less easily fixed)

    That Lange change behaviour is not normal. This is from the user manual.
    ‘If Require Lane Change Confirmation is turned off, Navigate on Autopilot engages the appropriate turn signal, checks for vehicles and objects, and when appropriate, maneuvers Model 3 into the adjacent lane.
    If Require Lane Change Confirmation is turned on, you must engage the appropriate turn signal to confirm that you want Navigate on Autopilot to make the lane change. If you do not confirm the lane change within three seconds, a chime sounds to remind you that Navigate on Autopilot requires your confirmation to change lanes.’
    Can you therefore confirm in your autopilot settings that ‘Require Lane Change Confirmation’ is turned off please? It should definitely change lanes with no driver interaction, unless this is some UK restriction (as the owners manual I have is US based).

    You need to signal to change lanes and tap to change your speed. This is a safety feature. Full self drive being illegal in the uk
    If you didn’t have to then it would technically be self drive, imagine if it sped up to 70 and you weren’t paying attention or worse changed lanes of its own volition.
    Self drive is still new and time will tell on how safe or not it is.

  • @hitsov
    @hitsov 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The "self driving" of tesla is the most disappointing thing in the car. The car doesnt seem to recognize speed signs and takes everything from the maps which are outdated. Now the autosteer slows down for speed limits, but sometimes it shows 30 on a 70, the other day showed 90 on a 50. Its just useless. The autosteer just parks you in the middle of the lane and this is sometimes very dangerous when you have a truck in the oncoming lane. And when you want to take over, the autosteer really fights you and you have to pull super hard on the wheel. The automatic cruise control is so glitchy and twitchy sometimes I wish I had just a fixed cruise control. When someone is in you lane it slams on the brakes super aggressively, but then when the lane is clear it just stands there, not accelerating for ages. And whats up with not having android auto or similar?? At least the standard navigation could have shown cops and speed traps as alerts, but noooo. Too much to ask for in the most advanced car brand...

    Good summary. I agree entirely that it's not worth the money. I bought it last time it was offered and asked for a refund within 24 hours. There's no anticipation of speed limits - if I spot a drop to a lower limit ahead I start to slow down to the right speed as I enter it 'cos you're right, there'll be a camera not far ahead and fiddling to find and hit the 30 button whilst still doing 40 or 50 in a 30 is a sure fire ticket! The lane change is the same - it waits till the last minute to suggest a lane change, which you have to check and confirm, whereas I'd have started the move when I could see there was a good gap to go for - it's called being aware. As for navigate on autopilot, if all it does is enter and leave a motorway without hitting something I'm actually quite good at that myself. The car itself (M3 LR), a year on, is a dream - it makes me smile every time - despite the limits we've had on movement the last 12 months. Shame it didn't work out for you but good with a real world critical report. There are so many videos out there where people document problems with phantom braking and how you can't set the cruise control to the speed you want as it speeds up to the actual speed limit, but they seem to view these problems as acceptable Tesla quirks even though reliable cruise control is found on many cheaper cars and a fairly basic requirement for a relaxing drive. Hopefully getting my M3 soon but I feel the only way to relax will be to turn all driver aids off. Bit ironic on a £50000 tech car.🙁

    • @WhatTheTesla
      @WhatTheTesla  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was genuinely excited that this was an option again but felt very much let down by current laws and some of the questionable tech, especially when trying to pull onto the dual carriageway! The standard autopilot 99% of the time is good enough and does a very good job. Worth taking a test drive if you haven't already? The Model 3 is a fantastic car and I really do recommend it, just save your money on Enhanced Autopilot or Full Self Drive as right now, it's not worth it.

    I'm finding it difficult to decide between the LR or the SR+ with EAP. I can afford one or the other.
    I do a fair bit of motorway and just wonder if the lane changing is worth it. I think you don't have to confirm everytime but still have to nudge steering.

    • @WhatTheTesla
      @WhatTheTesla  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi @ziam90 thanks for your comment. Personally, right now I'd just go with the LR without EAP as my experience with "auto" lane change was far from "auto" and not worth the £4,300 in my opinion. If you're doing lots of miles, the LR is certainly worth the investment. If you want to add EAP at a later date, i.e. if/when the government allow more automatic driving, then you can do it over the air. Just my 2 pennies worth...
