Where were you on Election night, 1968? If you were Warren Beatty, you were probably in bed with a groovy chick or at least doing her hair. The basement is going to fill up with suds as we watch Shampoo.
In Seen It, Read It, we discuss books and movies about nested cuckoos, monkey trials and fishermen out of water.

I'm only spitballing here, because my first exposure to this movie was this episode, but I have a theory.
This movie is about the death of Free Love. George used to be happy, and now he isn't. Lester seemed as if he was always somewhat unhappy, and he gets married at the end of the movie. George was always expressing free love, up to the absurdity of Carrie Fisher's character just dropping sex into his lap. Suddenly, he wanted more from life. He wanted autonomy, he wanted his own salon. But all around, he bad to interact with the ideals the hippies rejected, chiefly the importance of money. He needs a bank loan when he doesn't even want to collect for the coffee. Lester doesn't just represent the stuffed suits, he represents the cold reality that hippies avoid in their communities and their separate parties on Election Night. And what's the biggest symbol of the victory of Middle America over the hippies and their culture? The election of Richard Nixon. As Nixon was winning the election, George was being caught, having all of his affairs exposed, and losing everything. He was a man without a party to go to. The Senator was speaking gibberish to him and the flower children were no longer able to satisfy his greater human need. With Nixon's victory came the victory for the symbol of the Nixonian America, Lester, who swoops in, proposes, and gets the better of Warren Beatty in the end.

I've always loved this movie. At the end, George is miserable - and he still doesn't really know why. But a few scenes before, Goldie Hawn told him exactly what he needed to do: Grow up. I saw this movie when it was released in 1975 with my girlfriend. I was just 17, and the film stuck in my mind from first viewing. The famous Carrie Fisher line shocked audiences all over America. Not to mention, Julie Christi's salty dialog at the election dinner table. Any guy who saw this film in the theater remembers those scenes. And while I don't think this is a truly great film, it offers laughs, gasps, and makes a lasting impression to be sure.

So Warren Beatty’s character in this is the American Alfie. A male “hustler” who has various affairs of many woman. He comes to a conclusion of mortality. He finds love and then is heartbroken because he can’t get that happiness and contemplates reality and questions “what’s it all about?”.

I have a theory on the Nixon inclusion: Watergate had just recently come to pass. The main character in Shampoo does a lot of behind the scenes actions that make him powerful, in a sexual sense, that eventually are revealed and lead to the downfall of his "power" status as well as his reputation. The antagonist symbolizes the Elite of society, who maintain power in society (the bank, for instance), yet who were also victims of the "powerful" lead that reflects the things they might get up to. The hippie culture is painted as this neutral party in the ordeal because Vietnam had yet to come into this political allegory, and yet the hippie party is the catalyst to the reveal of the main characters downfall. Just my thoughts.

You guys ever seen A Scanner Darkly? It's infuriating. Not only do they combine two of the main supporting characters into one character, but they took an important plot revelation that happens three quarters of the way through the book and placed it at the 20 minute mark. I was so frustrated by the movie that I quit 45 minutes into it, which I rarely ever do. It's a damn shame, because the rotoscoped visuals and the actors were all a perfect fit.

Surely the reason for the Nixon thing is because the suggestion is that the 60s end then with the Nixon counter revolution and Beatty is too self absorbed and careless to notice what's coming. When he achieves self realisation its too late. The suggestion is when America realises what Nixon is its too late to turn around the damage.
