    The fragmentary narration of the film owes to the fragmentary state of the book; unfortunalely, there was a larger book that hasn't come to our times and probably never will. As an historian, I like one of the messages this films provides: the past is travel through a world we cannot fully depict and understand, specially when we're talking about a civilization thousands of years old and with different mentality and traditions. All we have from the past is fragments, and even when we believe we can understand it is that we realise how far we are from it. Some describre this film as a science-fiction from the Roman empire, but then again every film made about the Ancient Rome ends up being just fiction, because they are modern interpretations from a distant past from which we just have ruins and fragmentary documents.

      That's rubbish Cinecittà dubbing for you. They would never use original sound in Italian movies before the 90's, I think. You know that Fellini would often only add in the actual dialogue after shooting the scenes? Instead he would just let actors improvise by randomly reciting numerals.

    • @mwhite6522
      @mwhite6522 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@mondegreen9709 The dubbing was purposely off-kilter. Fellini wanted the movie to seem bizarre and disjunct, just like the surviving text of the novel. In the same way, he often rejected sets or props that looked too realistic.

    Roma was heartbreakingly beautiful, and I cried a few times during it, but there was a hilarious scene where the family are sat on a bench and are so sad and down, and behind them is a giant comedy crab, and in the background is a hugely happy wedding. The juxtaposition is so funny despite it being so damn sad.

Stylistically stunning in regards to cinematography no doubt, but I just don't understand why everyone was head over heels for it compared to films like say BlackKlansman and First Reformed that were the finest films of the year in my opinion.

    Satyricon fried my tiny mind in 1978 as a new college film major who loved old Hollywood. It was an entirely new and frightening language. Sort of like TikTok is to me now. In fact TikTok "dances" often remind me of the inexplicable random hand gestures background characters in Satyricon make. They are apparently supposed to communicate meaning, but I don't have the proper decoder ring.

    Craig was absolutely right about Roma. The academy is so desperate to pick a movie that the general public can get behind. Despite controversy Green Book is easily a crowd pleaser. Roma is in my opinion the obvious winner but for he sake of viewership it would push the general public away.

    I had to watch this twice, because Matt's opening remarks were distressing, and I couldn't focus for about 20 minutes.
    I have about a dozen reasons why he is wrong. But I'll start with this blanket statement: Goodfellas (albeit a near perfect movie) is nothing in comparison to The Godfather.
    Henry Hill is our main character, flawed, wanting into an elite social/criminal network, and he takes us down the intriguing rabbit hole that leads to his and everyone else's destruction. As a viewer, you feel somewhat elated when he becomes a criminal (as though you're a part of it), even excited and somewhat scared, but he ultimately becomes a hideous monster that few of us can relate to.
    Betraying his new friends and new "family",... betraying the only thing he held sacred at the beginning of the film.
    The Godfather is superior because it's basically the opposite story.
    Everyone can relate to young Michael. The film/s make you subtlety understand his reluctance behind being what is expected of him, what his family wants of him, and what he wants as human being.
    The story of The Godfather is about the loss of innocence at the price of family and obligation. It mirrors life for ever viewer. We all have to sacrifice some of ourselves in order to do what we think is best for our family/friends/lovers, and sometimes everyone else who you rely on.
    Goodfellas is about some asshole who wants to be a criminal; becomes it, and then fucks everyone/thing over to save himself.
    The Godfather is about a reluctant son who begrudgingly takes up his father's mantle, after every other option is eliminated. Michael, at the beginning, just wants to have his own life (without his family calling the shots). Who can't relate to that?
    Now Henry Hill??? What a piece of shit (in real life too {listen to Howard Stern})!
    I guess what I saying is, despite the lack of humor, The Godfather is better because EVERYONE can relate to losing their virtue because life takes it from us. Goodfellas (while great) is about some asshole who fucks over everyone he loves to save himself and tell you a self aggrandizing story about it.
    Matt, I do not think you are a romantic.
    Craig you're the best, but maybe next time give your honest, unabashed opinion.
    P.S. Still the best show ever!!! I owe you fellas a debt for turning me on to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. Love you guys forever!!!\
    P.P.S. I do have eleven more reasons.

  • @linkfan160

    Thank you Matt for saying good things about Green Book. Ever since the Oscars people have been cursing and spitting at it with all the rage and fury they can, which I think is very misplaced. Nor do I believe the film is deserving of that. It's not perfect of course (no movie is) but I for one really enjoyed it.

    • @stormcloudsabound
      @stormcloudsabound 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Cinema Cynic Every movie is worthy of both praise and criticism-Green Book happened to be like every other White Savior movie, I think it’s in part a victim of circumstance. It’s getting vitriol not necessarily for what’s in it, but of what it represents. The things Matt praised about it were done much better in Get Out, for example. (It’s also disrespectful to the family of the man in question, compared to the doc about the book/man that no one watched.)

    SEEN IT? The World's Greatest Sinner. It is batcrap bananas and the work of a zero-budget auteur, character actor great Timothy Carey. And the music is done by Frank Zappa, apparently his first professional gig as a composer at age 22. True guerilla no permit filmmaking. Carey bites off WAY more than he can chew regarding themes: eternal life, death, God, the hubris of celebrity, the gullibility of the mass audience. Almost too much here. And a bunch of cars get burned up. It is available on Amazon Prime Video.

    I think what probably gives Goodfellas and edge for people also, is that it does not really romanticize the mob at all. While The Godfather definitely presents a more romanticized version of the Mafia, which mobsters would then try to emulate after the movie came out. Yet Goodfellas shows what these people for what they, which are greedy, violent and aggressively ignorant sociopaths.

    Martin Scorsese said about The Departed that it was his first film with a plot, that's obviously an exaggeration but his movies are more character driven than story driven, Goodfellas being a great example of that. It tells the story of these character, yes, but it's about them rather than about what they do and what happens to them, if that makes any sense. The Godfather on the other hand succeeds at both telling a story and a character study. It's characters are also more sympathetic in my eyes, meaning I'm more invested, I never cared if anyone in Goodfellas got killed because they were all shitty people that I wanted to see fail. Of course, everything's subjective so you can never say one thing is better than another, so, eh.
