and it has the best multiplayer created ever. After shitty GoW2 multi, and after amazing multi from GoW1, Epic delivered the best part in series and the best multi !!!!

Gears of War 3 is by far the best 3rd person shooter of all time especially in terms of gameplay mechanics.
Yeah, I mean mass effect has many deep mechanics, but Gears of Wars combat is perfect. 3rd person shooters wish they were Gears of War.

It's obviously the pc and ps3 elitists. Gears 3 is a great game. It would be even better without the sawed off and retro lancer

GOW 2 is by far my favorite.
It added the most changes to it's formula and provided the most fun online I had played since Halo.
I liked 3 but the online wasnt as fun for me, I dunno.
As for Judgement..Well that felt like a cash in on the series.
i used to play gears of war 1 and 2 split screen with my brother ALL the time like 5 years ago. i can't believe ive never played gears 3 and i am playing it right now on my xb1

I can agree with the improvements to the 2nd one. The 3rd has the best game play and story, so as the final game it fulfilled my expectations although 2 will always be my favorite thanks to the iconic moments. What is your favorite so far?

They gave GOW judgement a 9.2 but they gave this a 9.0????
When they made Judgment, they only had half of a development team with a strict deadline. They did what they could and considering that, it's a damn fine effort. I play Judgment and I play Gears 3 a lot more than almost any other game in my collection (excluding Borderlands 2). Think of Judgment as its own game without comparing it to the past gears and thats when I started to think it's not that bad of a game. Just sit down and enjoy what they made or don't buy it. Simple as that.

People, remember that IGN is made up of many DIFFERENT journalists who have DIFFERENT OPINIONS than each other and you. Also, you don't need someone else's approval on something you like, so why even care about reviews?

Playing this for the first time. Beat the first 2. Can't wait to finish out the remaining 3. I never owned an Xbox to play these so im excited to finally sit down and beat it.

Game deserved a 10. The story is great, multiplayer is great, content is awesome. Although the AI have issues sometimes.

Gears is the type of game that you buy without looking at reviews because you know exactly what you are getting
Why do people compare this game to Uncharted? Gears is supposed to be an overhauled meat-fest for to bring out the psycho in you, while Uncharted is more narrative based. The only similarity, is the fact that they are both third person shooters.

anybody who has played the first remember the suspense. The world was quiet nothing but the atmosphere and your allies sounds. The the world was gigantic and silent, you traveled along your mission really felling like you were marching into hell and not starting next door to trouble. I remember those first levels with the truck and fallen team far down below. Once you reach them hell breaks out and you fighting to survive, cause it wasn't target practice simulator. When it was quiet it was for a good time without exposition bothering and you could enjoy the size and scale of everything. A true feeling that you couldn't go there and not because of linear plot walls.
DANIEL3351 multiplayer isn't fun if it isn't co op. If it's normal multiplayer it's nothing but action death match. It's supposed to be horror but it's less frightening than halo 1! imagine if a realistic races's sequel instead had big explosions and atachements to destroy the other opponent

I don't think Gears 2-3 suck, but I understand what you're saying. Gears 1 did have a darker, more somber atmosphere that took itself much more seriously.
The game was advertised more on the themes of fear and sadness (the very first teaser was a child talking about the monsters in his closet while it showed the locust shuffling in the shadows, then it ended with Marcus saying "Are you afraid of the dark?" That's where the horror was implied.
I enjoyed the other Gears games, but they did get more action-packed, and left behind the desolate feel of Gears 1. I hope they return to that in Gears 4.
No! NO! Stop being so nostalgic about Gears 1! Suspense? The game felt like a shell. The story, despite having excellent characters, was empty. Get from point A to point , doing the exact same mechanics as the previous levels. Kill hordes, find berserker or seeder, use hammer of dawn, repeat until end of level. And the Junker section; that PURE EVIL section made me cringe. There were a lot of points where I just wanted it to end. Thank god the sequels came and fixed that mess.
magnusm4 I know what you mean. Gears 1 was unique because of it's brutal, almost survival horror atmosphere and challenge. 2 & 3 are much more grandiose michael bay explosion fests, although they admittedly play a lot better. Depends what you value, for atmosphere and pacing I'd go Gears 1 any day, but you'll get way more play time and variety out of 2 & 3

I've never played this game. I played the first two so is it worth getting depending on if the multiplayer is as good as something like COD or BF3?

If you're interested in story, get them in order. If not I'd recommend 3 just because overall it has the best and most fluent multiplayer. Gears of war Judgement is a shitty excuse for a gears game and was just an attempt by People Can Fly to cash in on a popular franchise. Don't get that one/waste your money.

I admit this wasnt what i was hoping it would be in terms of the story and its twists, but how is the dialogue cheesy?! In my opinion it has the best dialouge in any game. Not only does it master the serious moments such as doms death but the banter throughout is so funny between baird cole marcus and dom

Probably because you suck at the multiplayer. Get better and then try again it's more fun once you get good at the game. Like me I have been playing gears of war since I was 9 years old now I'm 17. I have 8 years of experience with this game and I am good at multiplayer but not the best.

I unfortunately got a used copy that apparently has a glitched story mode. so act 4 when u r going for the submarine parts it either goes to a black screen... which you can still move around in and see nothing but the HUD or the elevator switch you press brings no elevator. this makes me sad.
I don't know how epic could stray so far from this in judgement... This game was everything story didn't feel short, everything multiplayer worked perfect, great maps.
If judgement didn't try to be hipster gears it would have launched so successful. If people played it at this moment they would be surprised how much epic changed it back to most good routes but to late maps are good and with the dlc you'll have more than 3 maps but the dlc should be free for messing up.
My rant for today
My fave Gears, the story, multiplayer and horde are all incredible. Would recommend. A strong 9/10
If you're (seriously) interested in Gears of War and don't mind reading (or audiobooks) then I suggest reading the books. All 5 of them. They really help flesh out the story, characters and they're motivations. The Slab is the last book, but I'd recommend reading/listening to it before playing Gears 1. GoW: Judgement is a prequel to the entire series, but it plays a bit different so it may be difficult to transition from Judgement to Gears 1. Great series and I personally hope there's more games and books in the future.
im just saying that certain games aren't meant to be judged on certain aspects of it. It's like how Mario isn't judged for its story and Mass Effect isn't judged on its combat. It depends on what the developers focus on and expect the player to enjoy. Like how the main focus of Battlefield 3 is multiplayer not it's campaign. It's the reason you play the game. And if you think Gears of war has a more engrossing, emotional story than U3, then you obviously haven't played many story focused games.

getting a 360 next week should I get this or judgement first as I'll eventually get both but which one do people still play online? (have played G1 and G2)
Realism in context, you can curbstomp someone to smash their head like grapefruit but it takes continuous assault rifle fire to put somebody on the ground. Cover systems never really add anything to competitive multiplayer, which is the reason it only shows up in games that have regenerating health. Do you play anything besides shooters competitively?
Multiplayer is so fun, I couldn't even wait for an xb1 any longer but this game made me much more patient

Man, i love this game. Ever since i was dissapointed with the past 3 halo games (ODST, Halo wars, and Reach) and quitting cod ever since black ops, i've just been concentrating on the gears trilogy. Gears 3, battlefield 3 and skyrim are my favourite games this generation.

Also, about the "been there done that" complaint, are you serious? Do you want a Gears of War first person shooter or something? The gameplay is perfectly fine the way it is. And it got better with Gears 3. They've improved the physics, and overall feel of the game's controls. There's more executions, an iron-sight mechanic, and really cool enemy designs. There's no need to change. It's already a good thing that it's staying the same and adding new quirks to the gameplay.

Just beat Gears 1, almost done 2 moving onto my personal favorite in 3 soon then to play the new games which I have not played. Gonna be interesting to see how 4 & 5 compare to the OG trilogy.

Just completely curious when a game comes out for example like Crysis 2 or MW3 on all 3 platforms, which do you pick? I would guess PC for the superior graphics and online community, but xbox and ps3 also have their advantages like Acheivements/trophies and gamepads, which i personally favor over keyboard and mouse.

funny you should say that as I'm typing this I'm actually downloading gears 3 from xbox live and i down loaded the other two from xbox live earlier in the week, iv completed the first two as of yesterday and i can say that this review is pretty much what id expect there are somethings in the second game that felt similar to the first one but as a whole i think the gears trilogy is known for very,very tight gameplay iv enjoyed every second of playtime so far (with the first two) you´ll love it :D
Personally I think Epic did a tremendous job with this game. A great end to their trilogy. The single player & S player Co-op blow anything CoD has done out of the water. Damn shame the multi player has such a heavy learning curve that the casual player gave up on Gears 3. The playlists aren't as populated as they should be.

Honestly I never understand the "cheesy storytelling" complaint. I don't get it. The storytelling is just fine, and it fits really well with the overall universe. It's like they expect "Dark Knight Trilogy" storytelling and voice acting for this franchise. Do you realize how boring that will be if you combine that sort of serious storytelling with this type of game? I love Baird's rage, Cole Train's enthusiasm, and Dom's emotional moments. What do you mean it's cheesy? It works for this game!
I got all the gears games and I've been playing them in order. I got them with gears 4 and I'm really excited to play it. I need to get through Judgement.

Stop comparisons between Gears 3 and Uncharted 3, the thing is this: Gears Of War 3 = Uncharted 3
People piss and moan about the Xbox having very few exclusives, but when your console has both the groundbreaking Halo franchise and the bliss that is Gears, I wouldn't complain at all XD.

Personally surprised by the reviewer's "been there done that" comment - then again it has popped up from IGN about games that just settle on refining their mechanics. I personally don't see the big deal - you buy new games in most series for the next story or upgraded features, not because the gameplay's been totally overhauled and, as the saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

As we all know "killer app" is an expression in this context. Um since when does Microsoft have to own the rights to a series to try as hard as possible to keep that series? I mean come on, it's been a huge hit for them - no way would they just passively let Epic take it to Sony.

I felt kinda differently. For me, Gears 1 had the best atmosphere and the best story, Gears 2 had the best gameplay (campaign-wise. Who DIDN'T enjoy riding a fucking Brumak or murdering a giant worm from the inside? :D) as well as the best MP maps and Gears 3 has the best graphics (although the graphics weren't bad to begin with) the best gameplay playing-wise (The most executions, bagging-and-tagging.) as well as the best emotional part. Gears Judgment though... *shiver*.

I hope gears 4 stays with the games roots unlike how Halo 4 broke off from the norm of the Halo series.

"Only myself" you just started gaming this gen didnt you? You seriously have no clue about the huge MGS fanbase? "gears has better multiplayer" its a plain shooting third person shooter. Metal Gear Online makes the Gears multiplayer look like a shovelware game made for the Wii. I never said MGS was an exclusive series to PS. Only MGS4 is.
