    The Pheasant tail nymph was one of the first flies I learned to tie and often the first I tie on still when I'm trout fishing. That was a beautiful Brown you caught there. Thanks.

    What a beautiful Brown. That fly absolutely did its job. What a great looking stretch of water. Excellent job of catching and landing a very rewarding trout. From the tying to the final look of that nice Brown, perfect video. Thank you Matt.

    G’morning Matt. Your spin on the classic Pheasant tail has really paid off nicely with a beautiful fish! The way it was pulling you know that’s a good one and a great job with the net too. Fishing footage is always nice to see when you haven’t been out there for a while. Thanks for the vicarious tidbit.

    Good morning Matt. ☕️. I’ve got a bunch of Pheasant Tail nymphs in my fly boxes. Different sizes, some variations in colors, some with hotspots and they look great but the darn things haven’t got a fish yet 😀. Nice Brown Trout. Nice you were able to get out. I’m going to fish some Pike this Saturday with some friends. Should be fun. Take care.

    Thanks Matt for sharing. Looks like several that I have tied. The more Mayflies I look at the longer the tails are. I looked at some white ones, about a size 16 body length, but the tails were twice the size of the body. You could have done a bit of rabbit dubbing on the thread before you did the whip finish. great looking fly. Thanks my friend.

    I was at the savage river in the beginning of the month and it was a lot lower than that. Man the rocks were slick as bowling balls. We fished from the fly shop up to the bridge. We got outsmarted but what a beautiful place and a great river!

      I know what you mean! Some of those boulders are slippery! The water this year has been crazy. Back in June we had a couple of weeks of it being crazy high, then several weeks of it being low. But the good thing about being a tailwater is that they never let it get too low.

      @@FlyTyer1948 I am making good gains but the pain for improving is always there. Now I’m getting into the marginal gains and the pain level increases. The old pain of the wore out knee is gone. I don’t sleep on my back either. I had to wall myself up w/pillows. For my 2nd knee replacement, I started sleeping in my recliner & finally had some decent sleep.

    Matt, thanks for your take on the Flashback Pheasant Tail nymph. I had been using flash nymphs for years when I lived in NJ and MD with great success. It's a dependable fly.
    I'll be back up to MD in the autumn and will be fishing the Gunpowder with a 6'6" glass rod and a DT4F double taper line ;over gunned or OK in your experience?

  • @FlyTyer1948
    @FlyTyer1948 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Good looking, solid & reliable! Nice fish. How cold is the water temperature in the Savage? Water temperatures here in MA are warm enough that I would likely only fish saltwater (temp is 71 on the south side of Cape Cod & 70 in Mass. Bay north of Cape Cod) or go to western Mass. just below bottom release dams. The Healing Waters pond is mid 70s & now only bass fishing until fall. I didn’t check on the Penobscot but I would guess it’s only cool enough 5-8 miles below Ripogenus Dam in the West Branch.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Bob! The Savage is a bottom release tailwater and I believe it's coming out at 55 degrees right now. It may only get up to 62 or so before the confluence with the Potomac. Plenty cold enough to keep the trout healthy year round. And BTW, I'm in VA this week at a campground near Charlottesville. I fished the Rapidan this morning, will fish the Rose and Robinson the next two days and am doing a float trip for smallmouth on Thursday. Friday's river will be whichever of the three I liked the best. Fun times! Hope you're doing well. 👍
