I know you here it all the time but fishing the fly at the end of the video is an awesome way to show the whole process full circle. It is also very helpful that we get to see your approach fishing the Savage, really appreciate that. It is a tricky river for first time anglers.
There’s something special about coming up with your own version of a fly, and then the fish pound it! That’s exactly one of my favorite things about fly tying and flyfishing! That’s a beautiful place, Nice fish, great video! Thanks a lot Matt. 👍👍🎣🙂
Great looking fly, I initially thought that it had 1mm foam as a wing cover instead of the turkey tail. That does look like a great caddis. Thanks Matt as always for the tying video as well as the fishing footage. I love the fishing, with the explanation of the formation of the pocket you are fishing, I also enjoy the scenery a lot, I have commented to several TH-camrs that documenting the river and what is around the next bend is entertaining as well. I enjoy the quest of the river as well as the fishing even if there is no catching(which I can commiserate with).
I'm right there with you Lee! It took me a while to get better at tying videos, and I imagine it'll take me a while to be making better fishing videos too. On-the-water narration, while trying to hook and land a fish is a whole different skill set than sitting at my bench and reading from a script. :-)
Thanks Matt, I’m on the little Manistee river in NW Michigan. So grateful for your teaching. Catching and watching my brothers catching Kings on flies I tied has been a great experience. Have a blessed day my friend.
Really like this fly. I tied my first "deer hair caddis" style fly this past week. Really first foray into tying with deer hair. Looked great and fished even better! I'll definitely try adding a lil crystal flash.
Good morning Matt. ☕️ and a great video this morning. That’s a neat caddis and it was fun watching you fish it on the Savage. Not bad for having only an hour to fish too. Take care Matt.
Thanks John! Yeah, sometimes that's the way it goes. But believe me, this river has kicked my butt plenty. Some days in January and February for sure, I can spend the whole day on the water with nothing to show for it!
Exactly right Mike! The problem is, carrying a net on a sling pack is a pain in the butt! That's why I almost skipped it this time. But I'm glad I didn't. :-)
@@SavageFlies I carry mine in it’s own yellow sleeve with it’s own strap….yellow so if I lay it down or it slips off my shoulder I can easily find it! Many times the flys popped out while the trout was in my net so might not have landed it otherwise! Tight lines!
Great tie Matt ! Absolutely love the fishing portion !!! It’s awesome to see how & where you fish the flies you’re demonstrating for us to tie & it’s even more exciting when your plan comes together.
Oh yeah, that makes it fun for me too! But believe me, you don't see the footage of all the patterns I try that don't work. Those would be pretty boring videos. :-)

I've been fly fishing for only a couple-few years. I finally decided to start tying because there are variants of both dry and nymphs I think would be perfect for the water I fish but nobody offers them off the shelf. You not only offer inspiration in this regard but your fly tying videos are clear and concise. Never fished the Savage but one day soon! New sub.
Well thank you for this great comment my friend! Welcome to the channel and like I say in a lot of my videos, have fun with it! Get crazy, experiment, tie something nobody has tried before and give it a shot. That's what it's all about. :-)
This was fun to watch Matt! When your best fly isn't working its time to see what we might try. I was surprised to see you did well with such a light color for this time of year, but then again that's the fun in picking something. You have a nice home river with nice brown's. Enjoyed watching. Tight lines. 👍
Thanks Jim; I appreciate the kind words! As far as the light colored caddis patterns, they seem to do well here year round. We do have a cinnamon caddis here in the fall and there is a small gray one in both the spring and winter, but for some reason, the natural (lighter) color works almost all the time.
That's right Jeff! Driving home from the river that night, I was thinking of everybody I know fishing the saltwater flats, and chasing big bonefish... and I was just thinking, nah, I love this place. A small mountain river is just right for me. :-)
Good fishing. A buttery Brown is the perfect description. Reminds me of a Cedar Waxwing. Looks like some interesting water there. Another fly pattern I'll have to explore. Thanks.
I love the experimentation! I do this all the time. I'm no purist, and I usually use patterns as a loose guideline. I don't have all the exact materials, in all their different sizes and colors, and I also adjust flies to my environment.
Yep, that's the way to do it! And that's pretty much what Doug Prince did when he changed up the brown forked tail and came up with what is one of the most popular and successful nymphs of all time. :-)
I'm kind of the same way Thomas. I usually plan my full-day fishing trips well in advance. I have to balance them out with family time and kid duties. Unless... I'm out working on the farm. Then I can drive out for an hour or two when the work is done. Well, the work is never done on the farm, but sometimes I am. :-)
Nice looking fly Matt, always nice to end a good day at work with a hour or two of relaxation fishing on the Savage. You can always get by forgetting to bring certain items on a fishing trip, but never ever your net. It might mean the difference between kicking yourself in the rear end than patting yourself on the back for landing that personal best wall hanger, C-A-R reproduction.
Great point Phil! I almost skipped the net this time because I only had an hour and didn't feel like wearing my vest so just grabbed my sling bag. But I'm glad I brought it. :-)
Matt, years ago my brother fished a Bass tournament in his new boat, a early nasty May day, you should have been sitting on a couch watching a football game, 15 minutes after the start, he hooked a pig, but he forgot his dip net, he almost lost his fish, 13lbs. 5ozs., He won big bass and tournament with his one fish.
I pretty much tied that fly back in the 1980"s with out the flash. A quick tie version of the Letort Hopper. I give some flash a shot. Its getting cold, the local streams are very low and starting to fill with leaves. Rifle deer season starts in about three weeks. Nice stream.
Matt, Nice fly, I like it. Keep making videos ! As to your net magnet issue....You can buy rare earth magnets in different diameters. Measure the one on the net, and get one then it is a simple matter of epoxy and something like a plit ring or a piece of paracord

I'll definitely have some footage if I have a good day. :-)
Solid fly (should we call it “Matt’s Generic Fall Caddis” or “Matt’s Turkey Wing Caddis?”) & very fun fishing video. Well done on both! Also well done on not dunking yourself with that slippery rock.
Thanks Bob! And you know, I almost always think positive, and ask myself, "If I hook a big fish right here, where's he going to go and how will I play him?" Of course every now and then I forget to think of that, and get myself in a little of a bind. :-)
Thanks John! This is the Reddington Butterstick. I think mine is from their version two models ago. A few years back they made it with a white and brown retro look, but I think they've gone back to the yellow for the Butterstick III. It's a fun little rod. (If I could find an old model in a 2-wt I'd probably pick one up!)
🤓👍Awesome fly, awesome fishing segment! Well done Matt! No hackle, you use floatant or keep it a low rider? That reminded me of fishing a Usual in fast water pockets or a cobbed up variant of T.R.'s snow shoe emerger I tie, fished in the moderate currents. Hey, speaking of low rider, I got a pleasant surprise on Columbus day. The "boonie" came! 😂👏Very functional and practical headgear. Love the size adjustment draw cord. You're too kind, many thanks my friend. USPS must deliver packages on holidays like they do on Sundays. BTW, my wife spent this past week in Port Deposit and a day or two in I think she said Frederick MD for the LRC, Inc National Specialty with some of our "kids".. I mean Labs 😉The dogs did very well and she came back with a basket of different varieties of wine and a basket of Southern treats 😋from winning raffles. Can't wait to try the peach jams and hot pepper jellies, salsas. Some stone ground grits, 😋Praline pecans, different SC rice, cookies, crackers, some meat jerky, etc. Sorry, don't mean to tease with this carbalicious sweetness, but I haven't had Southern food in many years. Pinehurst Resort, NC breakfasts were awesome, and friends in Georgia showed us a good time when we visited them. Thanks again Matt 😀👍
Thanks Joe! This was a fun video to make. But I tell you, the whole time I'm fishing, I'm always wondering... is the camera on? Is it pointing to the right place? Because believe me, sometimes it's not. Sometimes I've just taken a break, taken a leak, eaten a sandwich, then go to turn the camera on and actually turn it off. That's when you realize you were just recording the last 20 minutes of nothing. So my hat's off to these channels who make good fishing videos. It's a definite skill that you've got to hone. As far as floatant, oh yeah, I gooped this thing up good. I pretty much do that with all my deer hair or elk hair caddis patterns. Now for the snowshoe hair, I must have some bad feet. I've got at least a half dozen colors but the hair is so short, I've never been able to tie Rosenbauer's emerger in anything bigger than an 18. Speaking of Frederick, MD, yep that's central Maryland, not too far from where I live but a couple hours from western "Mountain" Maryland. But pretty much all the delicious foods you mentioned are off-limits on my low carb diet. Ugghhh! I'm glad you like the hat. I got a couple for myself. :-)
@@SavageFlies Too bad on the ss feet. The first calf body hair I got from Orvis was very short, couldn't use it on the size flies I tied... 12s and up. Filming 🎥, you do do just fine 🙂 Sort of a Murphys law when fishing, you get a fish 🐟 when you're doing something else. Those key lime cookies from Charleston SC are great 👍 I haven't got into the beef sticks and jerky from WA state yet ☺️ You do just fine on filming IMO. 👍Take care!
@@SavageFlies So is this diet self inflicted or doctor"s orders? 🤔 I shouldn't be eating any of these carbaluscious, sweet and salty treats she won, doctor's orders. 🤫 My "in moderation" diet is getting blown away. 😒
The First Commandment of Fly Fishing, Thou shalt not swim in waders. I try to always wear my Fly Vest PFD while fishing. It is a little cumbersome but…. I was fishing once in Kentucky in a small lake (Gravel pit) and tried to step into a spring, I felt the gravel giving way like quicksand, and managed to backpedal quickly enough to keep the water out of my waders, it was a huge reminder of why I was wearing the PFD vest.
Holy cow, that's a scary feeling! I've never done that but I've gotten stuck in waist deep fast water, in the middle of a river barely being able to turn around to wade back. It took me about an hour moving a half inch at a time. I've since learned to be very careful, particularly in the winter when taking a swim can be dangerous. I'm a little more adventurous in the warmer months. :-)
I hear you Greg! My ten years in the Navy had me living in coastal cities and I had to spend a half a day driving to find any mountain water. I'm pretty fortunate where I'm living now. :-)
It just might Chasse! And BTW, I see your emails but haven't gotten to my inbox since getting back from the farm. I'm traveling for work again tomorrow so will probably get to them later in the week.

👍Take care!
@@joeduca8582 Hmmmm... beef sticks and jerky. That's something I can eat!
@@SavageFlies So is this diet self inflicted or doctor"s orders? 🤔 I shouldn't be eating any of these carbaluscious, sweet and salty treats she won, doctor's orders. 🤫 My "in moderation" diet is getting blown away. 😒
Mine is self-imposed. My pants were getting too tight so I signed up for a marathon in the spring and now have to get ready for it. 🤪
Oh how I wish I was closer to clear water streams.
I hear you Greg! My ten years in the Navy had me living in coastal cities and I had to spend a half a day driving to find any mountain water. I'm pretty fortunate where I'm living now. :-)
We have some stocked conservation streams here in Missouri but they just get so much pressure that it is not that much fun
I know it's a caddis imitation but putting on some golden pheasant tips for a short tail would add a little extra trigger!
It just might Chasse! And BTW, I see your emails but haven't gotten to my inbox since getting back from the farm. I'm traveling for work again tomorrow so will probably get to them later in the week.
Unfortunately these days everyone is so busy !!seems the pace just gets faster ,never less.
Matt ever think of opening a Fly tying/fishing discord server? Great Tie btw
No, I haven't! Should I? I don't know anything about Discord. Maybe I'll have to do some research. Thanks for the note. :-)
Fly boxes that's what I meant as they're disorganized! Lol
Hahaha! You and me both Richard. :-)
