That's funny Darren, I just mentioned the same thing on the previous comment. I too think a lot of nymphs simply look better on curved hooks. I have no idea why. Intuitively it just seems right. :-)
Thanks, Matt! Another great fly. My first effort to tie up a CJ (plain) was with a Mustad #12 bait hook, copper wire from an old electric motor, and some peacock herl. I caught some very picky rainbows in midday clear water summertime. I think this is one pattern that just works even without the bead head.
Oh, you bet Butch. I've always got a half dozen various Copper Johns in my box. Usually 14s, 16s and 18s, and three main colors: copper, green and red. They're still my go-to flies when I want to get something deep or punch it through fast water. Thanks for the note!
Appreciate it Steve. If you've got a pheasant skin, my second choice would be to use one of the small feathers on that (the kind of gray/green down toward the butt). Other than that, just use any small hen, soft hackle. That'll work just fine!
I love this series! I bought this book because if this series and was pleased with the entomology section of the book as well as the patterns. I live near WNC so I see this as my home water. I was wondering if you had considered reviewing John Barrs book "Barr Flies " Thanks

Ice tye Matt, do you put epoxy or UV on the wing case? Just want your take on this. Currently doing some remodeling and my fly tying bench is dismantled. When I get it done this is a pattern I will tie. Also using hen saddle for the legs. Is this an option?. Thanks again for your awesome channel.
Donald, absolutely! Hen saddle would make fine legs. If you didn't have partridge, my second choice would be a small pheasant feather but a small soft hackle hen feather would work just as well. Thanks for the note my friend!
I had no idea Jim. In fact, as the picture in Don Kirk's book was the only one I've ever seen of this specific variant, I actually wondered if that was a mistake. Whether they're snipped or not, meh, makes no difference to me. I think the coolest aspect of the fly is using a curved hook. (I just think so many nymphs look better on curved hooks though.)

Another nice fly. Goose tails look great but don’t work too well for me most of the time, using rubber leg material now. Have a great day
Thanks man! For me, goose biots are easier than rubber legs. My rubber tails end up sticking all over the place. :-)
