  • When European colonial powers threatened in the 19th and 20th centuries, Thailand managed to escape as the only country not to fall under colonial rule.
00:26 First reason: Thailand served as the intersection or buffer zone
02:05 Second reason: King of Siam changed their political system
05:10 Why it is important that Thailand was never colonized?

Rama V understood that as long as his Kingdom remained "backward" to European eyes, it remained vulnerable, so reforms in almost every area were required: The end of peonage and debt slavery, and other "cruel" punishment, a complete reform of law on a Napoleonic model, railways to connect major population centers, drivable roads, telegraph and other infrastructure, an education system for all levels, the country's first university, a system of centralized local government to replace old feudal systems of under-kings, a system of national banking and finance, and a modern military. Japan also made this realization/transformation. Had China done so earlier, perhaps the Qing dynasty could have survived.

One more reason is that the Thai King at the time is a close friend and ally of with the Tsar of Russia. This means at least FR/UK needs to consider the possibility of Russia getting involved if they plan to colonize Siam. A very strategic move in international diplomacy from the Thai King!

The French always fear Russia after Napoleon's retreat from Moscow. The Russians kept a watch on the British at the Black Sea and Crimea.

@@ngaoskiai7569 As well as courting European public opinion, very savvy. It was a bit of a reverse card to colonialists practicing divide and rule between different native entities, when Siam was doing the same with the great powers.

This is also why China was never fully colonised by the British. Up north, the Russians could invade. Staying south, the British could still make profit off the Opium they sold.

very useful explanation and can add insight into history. informative explanation. a little explanation that King Chulalongkorn who is the greatest king in Thailand adopted several European customs to prevent colonization. In addition, the King also made diplomatic efforts to England which ultimately minimized the possibility of being colonized by Europeans.

You can also see this Westernization in Thai architecture (palaces) where the roof top is traditional Thai but the bottom half European. This is called "Falang sai Chada". Also the clothing as well, top half Victorian and bottom half is Joong Kraben. The king said to the Thai people during the period of Westernization: " We will pretend to look like Europeans, but we will never be them".

The new flag was also designed along with the European lines. Their parliament and legal system was also designed along with the European lines.

The cause of thailand was never colonized because it has internal and external factors: internal factors: the king of thailand at that time, was open to the outside world. there were already educated people in thailand at that time especially the royal family.

The King of Chulalongkorn Strategy, implementing diplomacy to establish close relationships with Britain and France so that it minimizes the opportunities is colonized by Europe. And also make a way of preventing the colonization by adopting a number of European habits.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, only Thailand survived European colonial threat in Southeast Asia due to centralising reforms enacted by King Chulalongkorn and because the French and the British decided it would be a neutral territory to avoid conflicts between their colonies. Cmiiw

Thailand does not have a fertile land, unlike other Southeast Asian countries which have abundant natural resources, making Westerners not interested in colonizing it.
