  • The 3588J is an incredibly powerful module featuring the RK3588 SoC. In this video, we test the emulation performance of the RK3588 with PS2 (AetherSX2), 3DS (Citra), GameCube/Wii (Dolphin), and several other systems. This is a sneak peek into what we can expect from future open-source handhelds.

Why pay that premium when you can get the same, if not better performance for a lower price point.

To think a tiny board could run from Atari 2600 to Wii is amazing. The PS2 emulator from the captures are using the widescreen patches but the video frame is still in 4:3, the games look squished, but still amazing to see them running as well as they do. It is the step up that we have been waiting for for 5 years now and as soon as it gets into TV boxes and handhelds then it might take off if the price is kept low, although based upon the Firefly model, I'm not so sure. Linux gaming and video playback is unlikely ever to make much progress because of the lack of Mali open source drivers. As reported a while back by CNXSoft, there will be 2 models of RK3588, one with all the I/O and a cut down one that will likely be seen in boxes and handhelds.

Firefly usually charges a higher price for their SBCs compared to other vendors. You would need to see what Orange Pi or others charge for this chip to get a good idea of where the bottom line is. The chip itself is only about 2x the cost of the RK3399 / S922x

I wonder if it would be able to run emulator " EGG NS " ( nintendo switch ) or " Skyline " ( nintendo switch ) Both for android.
Both require or need a Snapdragon 845 processor and 12GB of RAM.
Please could you try to run those emulators ( EGG NS and Skyline ) and try some games ? Thank you very much

You should stick with RA for everything except PS1 and PSP. You could also skip out on Flycast and go with ReDream, but Flycast is good and has free widescreen hack support.

For my applications, industrial replacements, and integration for PLC's, Rockchip just does not hold up to extreme operating environments and is a bitch to use with your more obscure OS's and codes you see in the industry, past, and present. I find myself using the older Pi boards a lot as speed and memory and GPU capabilities are not an issue as stability and resistance to heat and moisture are. Cooling the newest boards is an issue. I try all options in micro board tech. For this board, it was just too unstable on the test bench so I did not waste the time testing it under load and in less than optimal environments. I have 100's of boards that I tested but I am sure I can use them to build a retro gaming console. :)

Man, the early adopter fee on that dev board is pretty steep at around 500usd. I have a Rock5 16gb preordered and will also get the Pine version when it releases too (unless it's the same exact board, prior the RockPi had NVME for the pcie lanes while the RockPro64 just had an actual pcie slot...that I used for a nvme > pcie card). I've already got a case with proper cooling for the most part designed for the Rock5. I doubt the boards with 16gb of ram will drop to the 39-80 dollars of previous gen, but even at the discounted preorder prices for the Rock5 you're getting a desktop experience for the price of a part or less in a lot of cases (proper driver/kernel support permitting for hardware encoding/decoding along with everything else...I hate Debian, so I'll be working on getting Manjaro/Arch and FreeBSD going for mine).
