Exactly!! Few can afford new, but more can afford (or dream of) used. We are very much in the second category. Watching a thoughtful review of new boats translates well when shopping for a used boat from the same builder. Thank you guys for doing this!
I would also add that a lot of us will not be able to go sailing for another 10 years, so boats you are reviewing today will be in the range of us mere mortals.
You two are truly amazing to watch. Both on your own and when you are poking fun with other sailing channel couples. I stumbled across you when you were with the Wynn’s and have watched you since, going back to watch all your videos. You are very well informed, informative and quite funny as well. Very well rounded and I have to say, 100 percent worth the watch. No idea why you haven’t hit the 100K mark yet but, I really hope it happens for you soon. You really deserve it. Cheers and all the best. 👍
Welcome to DC! We live just up the road. Enjoy all the free museums! We love exploring in the city. It is definitely a place that you never run out of things to do and see.
“The Sailing Doctor & His Aussie Bride”. You two should have your own television show. Your reviews are AWESOME. I’ve written reviews for “Trip Advisor”. I totally suck compared to y’all!!! Y’all are truly beautiful human beings, and you’re both easy on the eyes. Then there’s the funny banter, that keeps me coming back cuz y’all brighten up my day. Keep walking into your dreams you two. And Be Blessed...
You two put so much time and effort into creating, editing and reviewing these boats. Thank you for the quality of content and information. Be blessed.
In reference to your "critics" of why these boats.... well who cares about them? I really enjoy your series and normal videos as well. You can't be all things to all people, so just keep going with the great quality and content you put out. I think the real question is why can't any of the official organizations put videos out at the same professional level you do? GREAT JOB!
the critics are coming from the people that cares about them. There are "critics" that are attached to them. The "critics" may have no interest to see reviews of cats which are not in Ruby Rose's radar as the next boat.
I completely agree with your statement about "Not new, but well maintained previously owned" . There will seldom be a novice sailor shelling out a $million for a new cat, or mono hull. Therefore for each new $million + cat sold, there will most likely be a used boat for sale. If you like a review of a particular manufacturer, half of your legwork is done. I lean towards Leopard cats, but that's just a personal choice. I find your educated reviews an excellent source of information from experienced sailors. Picking up on things like engine access without standing in the sugar scoop. Who would have thought of falling overboard at midnight. I've never had anyone tell me that happened to them.
You all are my favorite sailing channel! Informative, intelligent, funny, and a pretty girl...all bases covered. Love this series of catamaran reviews.
Great video. Love you guys. I heard an interesting statement the other day regarding “200” mile days. First of all, how many people have done 200 mile days, for several days in a row? And was it worth the lack of stability and constant sail trimming. I’m beginning to lean toward more stability in a blow and smoother ride while decreasing the possibility of capsizing. I believe on a long passage that comfort and less stress is more important than speed records. Cheers
Great reviews thus far, you guys are really good at these, i subbed to your channel after the seawind review and haven't regretted it since. Great work, looking forward to the rest!
I love your channel and especially this series on catamarans, since I am making the same search. HURRY UP AND FINSH!😀 I am addicted. Keep up the great work.
I am really enjoying your catamaran reviews, (and that is coming from a long standing mono hull sailor). I reckon you are leaving a real legacy for the sailing community. Imagine trying to do something similar for monohulls
Saw you guys at the Annapolis Boat Show, saw a few production cats. But I emphasized on seeing the Xquisite X5. Chatted with the President, Tamas, and he said you guys had done an unguided and unbiased tour of her. Can’t wait for that review, I’ve been infatuated with her for a year now. P.S. did you hide my smuggled in bottles of Bovril? Hope you enjoy. Cheers
Thank you for another one of these catamaran videos. I really like the way you discuss why you dis/like different aspects of each cat. Even though I cannot afford $1.3M for a boat either, they are nice to see for what is possible and they are pretty. Thank you again :)
Just my thinking, the reason many semi-production boats are using “raised” hatches as opposed to flush is that there issues with leaking on the flush mounted as I have experienced on chartered catamarans that were less than 3 years old. In addition, they are difficult to clean the recess on a flush hatch where it must be opened to wipe down. With a raised hatch closed, a quick scrub with the deck brush, rinse and you’re done. As for the trip hazard of a “raised” hatch I guess there is something to that, but I’ve never found it difficult to get around and never heard of anyone trip over one. Still loving your reviews and looking forward to the rest of what you saw at the show!
Hi Guys, love the videos. I've seen a couple of videos on the Maverick 440 and I'm desperately waiting to see you review of this one. I'm not a sailor yet so all your videos are my eyes to adventure. Keep them coming.
I must be old then. I'll take one thank you... I wore elbow patches 20 years ago when I tried to look refined. I soon realized, I looked like a tosser... LOL... Now, I understand a little bit of luxury, especially understated, as the Discovery is, makes life so much more pleasant... If it gets you over the Atlantic faster than RubyRose the monohull, then that's a plus... More time to relax and enjoy what you've got... Is a cheque OK... :) It's in the mail...
Just my opinion about flush hatches is they are probably much harder to make water tight and the seals would need regular maintenance along with they'll allow rogue waves and splashes easier access below. I like this boat because it's one of the rare ones you've shown with a furling main although I realize it may have been put on as an option. Eight year old boats are a much cheaper option only if the previous owner has done some upgrades on all the systems that magically have a life span of around 10 years. I think many are traded just in time to miss some sizable maintenance bills.
TBone MC bam! Exactly. Sails and rigging have a 10 year lifespan. It’s like the 2000 hour overhaul point on airplanes. Part of your operating costs is for doing the big 10 year maintenance items.
I am pretty sure I've watched all the revues and this "home", to me, is one of the top if not the top. Expensive as hell but it seem my favorites are all the most expensive. Well done!
Great review, lovely to see you both well, didn't expect anything else of course ! will be skipping back to see your French canal journey, something id love to do, one thing to mention on behalf of Discovery, their after-sales service is second to none, almost regardless of where you might be in the world, I get that on good authority from a close friend & Discover owner.
Trust me Nick, I am that age and the tweed jacket and elbow patches still haven't happened :) That's a beautiful boat - you could live with those surroundings and be really happy for many years I'm thinking. You are right to be reviewing at this price range - you are experts and have something really valuable to say. And the point about more accessible pricing on the used market is an excellent one.
Great review as always. You were critical of the forward cockpit concept on the leopard for seaworthiness reasons and docked points as a result. No issues raised about the hot tub on the discovery despite it seemingly being even further forward. Why not? What is the difference??
Those oddly shaped side windows in the saloon will be expensive to have curtains custom made to fit. But if you are worried about that, you won't be buying this boat. 8:34 Heated towel rail?? Terysa we will never tire of you talking about ventilation. We will listen/watch whatever you have to say!
Have you thought about including the Chris White Atlantic 49 MF? It falls into the size and usage range that you are reviewing. His boats have almost a cult following.
Another great video! I've been trying to decide how you could make your videos better..... all I can think of would be sharks with laser beams, or a petting zoo. ;)
I want to touch on a couple of points made here in this video. 1. Value for Money. My personal opinion here is that this is rather subjective. What one person values may not be what others do. I think we can all agree that things like workmanship, craftsmanship and brilliant design are more expensive, but worth spending the money. We didn't see the engine room, but you did see it on the Privilege, and it was well laid out. If it was well laid out on the Discovery, easy to access everything, systems well designed, easy to work on, etc., that would be a 'value for the money' sort of thing for me. 2.Why are you looking at new boats out of your price range. Excellent answer, and as well, I haven't seen a boat show for used boats! "Come see our five to fifteen-year-old used boats from around the world, in all sorts of conditions!" But, you do have some drawbacks here as well. Design changes, newer boats like the Discovery which have no history, all of this makes it harder to determine a used boat you can afford. Combining the two, I agree with the statement you made about the older used boats. One of the reasons I talk about the used Priviliges so much. They reflect the quality that made them so expensive in the first place, and also are reflected in how they keep their value. Along the way, I'd like to see something for older used cats that reflect percentage of value over the years Also, I asked Keith over on Sailing Zatara about the hull slap, and he didn't actually answer what I was looking for, but their 585 doesn't seem to have too much of a problem, but then again, you have a 12 year old sleeping in that space! LOL Oh yeah, Nick, you complained about headroom in the Privilege 510 master suite, but on the Discovery, Terysa couldn't stand full up getting into the bed in the Master Cabin, either. My thoughts and observations.
Hello and many thanks. may I say that it is interesting to focus on hand rails and flash hatches, yes indeed. But, perhaps may I suggest a little focus on the mast foot, the stays, the counter fittings under the deck gears...Thanks a lot.
I believe your reviews have been very even handed. I have not heard you discuss any of the electric motor options possible. You may have and I missed it. Your opinion about the hybrid technologies would be interesting to hear.
Looking tru vidios again I begin think there most be some about how a boat looks after fx 7 years use and whit that also a resell value, so maybe need change view and thougts about these and other catamarans.
Beautiful boat. Good review. Him: Good joinery. Her: Everything else. 😀 I question your Performance criteria for this boat. You compare it to racing catamarans when it is not a racing boat. It is a long distance cruising boat. My question is how does the performance compare to other boats in this class such as the Xquisite? I would suggest you have two categories of Performance: Cruising and Racing. This would give your audience a more apples and apples comparison. Thanks for the review.
I wonder how many cruisers especially on long passages sailing shorthanded under a 24/7 watch system have any interest or energy to sail their home about at break neck speeds feeling every bump in the road as it were. The levels of concentration needed would be exhausting and I think it wouldn't be very long before they'd have a sail plan that only needed a quick look around at intervals while on watch. Men might like the bragging rights of faster boats but their women are dreaming of a bed that doesn't get thrown about and generators, long showers, ice in their drinks, ac's, washing machines, and water makers to water all the pot plants in the saloon. We know who wins those arguments. Women are sensible creatures and what the hell, there'll be room for a bigger fridge and lot more beer in the bilges. One sailing channel says "don't buy a couch" but I think it should be don't buy a "are we there yet" boat.
Thanks did enjoy the video and do like to see these great boats but as you touch up on at the end of the video bit out of the price range of most of us, get as they get older they become more affordable. Don't agree with the millionaires checking out youtube reviews, but hey what do i know😟 Will be interested to see your videos when you start to narrow down the cat type you are going to buy👍 still love your boat and if i had the money it would be D.S. Paul and Sheryl new boat.....very nice😍
It's really nice to have an ownersversion..absolutely no question but how much time do you actually spend in the cabin, wouldn't you prefer if the choise had to be made an extra large salon & bridge deck area ?????
Don't forget to look at some Tri's at the boat show! Can't wait to see the reviews of the cats. I think rooms in a boat are like in a tiny house. You get one awesome room, and the others get tacked on as reasonably as possible. Personally, I could care less about a fancy forward cabin, like this owner. But to each their own. On your last comments: Who wants to see old used boats, when you can be seeing brand new ones :) Unless your buying an historic canal boat, let's see some new shiny boats!
Very well done. I have to ask the question of New vs Used. I bought used catamaran as I love to work on stuff, I regret that decision now (just kidding), and wanted to know the various system in and out prior to shoving off. I will say this I have determined that a used cat of reasonable value you should add the sale price as your refit cost. Mine is a ‘99 Pajot 56’ that needed everything, and I mean everything. I made sure that the hull was solid and it is amazingly solid so I purchased and have spent just over a year, much less time if not for the significant whiskey distractions, refitting this boat. I am launching this winter for the Caribbean and will come back next summer to add a few more needed items for a circumnavigation. By the way this vessel has circumnavigated twice already and she is doing it again with an absolute moron, so I hope she knows what she is doing so I can survive. Love your program wish you would go back to cussing more, screw TH-cam.
So, what have we found out? The huge, really expensive cat has lots of space and a high quality design and finish. Love this series, but think I’d get more from it if the focus was on similarly priced boats and size that actually suited the Ruby Rose budget. It would be comparing apples to apples.
Thanks for the reply, guys. Does the model that’s older and cheaper have the same layout, spec and finish though? Could you review this generation for consideration? Really appreciate what your doing with this series and would love it more if you could drill down into this more practical level.
When you get back to Europe, it would be good if you could look at a Garcia Explocat 52. I was surprised that you could award full marks without looking at the steering links.
Just an observation about flush hatches. They may look better but are they practical? While living on a boat, wouldn't you have the hatches open most of the time? If that is the case they would be a trip hazard anyway. If they are open and they were flush, the water would run into the opening more on flush hatches than raised ones. I say the raised ones are better for stopping water ingress and most of the time are not a downside.
Would think the raised hatches would help keep water out if you left them open in the rain. Does flush vs raised make a difference for shedding water from a big wave or spray?
I would never Judge a reviewer by his or her Wealth ,To me a none sail person your view is more than I will ever have 1st thing You sail more than a lot that use a keyboard to judge why not just enjoy the review if you don't like it look at something else. Ps there is a lotto where you just might have that cash to buy what ever :) Great Review awesome Vlog. Now i am going back to window shopping before someone tells me i don;t have the cash :).
Re: comments from TH-camrs. First, most people are all about the 1% they don't like; put it down to bad parenting and woeful leadership training in schools. You can get 99% perfect and most will still call on a friend's help to invent a complaint. The French never apologize - read that as you might. As to why you'd spend the time building a valuable catalog for others, TH-cam subscriptions help - we get that; it's fine. In the end, the reviews have value to many fellow dreamers (be careful what you wish for) and videos are expensive and time-consuming to make, so soldier on. It looks as though the brand is building; so here's wishing you both continued good fortune.
Hi Nick and Terysa -- I'm loving your catamaran reviews, and I think the five categories (and the items within each category) on which you judge them, are really well chosen. However, your scoring system implicitly assumes that you weight each of the five categories equally. Don't you in fact need a final step, which adds your personal weighting (as a %) to each category, and then calculates the WEIGHTED score for each boat? After all, you might well weight, say, Interior Design higher than, say, Performance (for example). Fantastic channel, and thank you both so much!
Nice boat. No head space in master. Beautiful joinery but guessing fully spec’d out is $1.5 Mil. Might have to write a check for it. Of course the check will bounce farther than the boat will sail. 😎
Seems like quality shouldn't have been a 10 since you could not view the engine area. Also, since you do look at more costly options will you view a sunreef? And then lastly so far as safety goes could you at some point touch on what type of sailboat is the safest should you encounter a largish rouge wave? (not an extremely huge one don't see anything but a sub helping there)
Great video, thank you! At around 7 minutes in the video, the angle of the camera seems to show that if your are sitting in the main settee, facing aft and leaning agains the back of the seat, your head would hit the forward facing window. Any thoughts on that? Thanks
Somehow it think this is a winner for the two of you. And I could easily see you sailing this cat around the world. But I can’t look in you wallet. Well made video. Thanks for the review.
Everything is a compromise in production boats. Performance, space and price: pick two. The Outremers give good performance and are reasonably priced, but they sacrifice space. The cabins and the saloon are not as big as those on, say, a Lagoon of the same size. But, the Outremer would be sailing at double the speed of the Lagoon. The Outremer has dagger boards which allow you to sail up-wind. The Lagoons, etc, have little fins that give you the upwind performance of a 19th century battleship. In other words, waddle sideways. If you want performance and space, look at a 60' Gunboat. Absolutely brilliant. They were selling second hand a few years ago for around $6 million. You make your choices :-)
It's a Discovery, what did you expect. Would like to have seen the engine spaces. Head room in master not so good. Small Nav. station. Hard top above helm is probably an option. Flush hatches needed. Would not look good but I would have forward raked windows in saloon. Meanwhile tyresa's hair looked great and whats his name needs to pull teeth for a year to build the kitty. LOL
Nice boat, still like the Seawind, Question: Hatches-- Which hatch is likely to leak (especially with age) the flush or the overlap raised hatch. Stumping you toe I understand but durability to me would be the overlap raised hatch unless they arent overlaping a raised seal. Rather than the flush mount that is just pulled tightly onto a seal and doesn't overlap the raised outer rim. just wondering.
Yes but we wont be reviewing them. We went on board and they were so so nice to us. They had no idea who we were, and clearly had no money, but entertained us anyway.

Really enjoying this series, keep up the good work.

Awww, thanks my friend.
You guys are very smart !! I like the very intelligent way that you conduct your reviews.

Another great re view, thoroughly enjoyed your presentation in Annapolis on the French Canals.

Great review, such keen insights. Love your work!
thanks.
Hold your course reviewing! Love your reviews and your insights are applicable to ANY cat!!!!

That is an amazing Catamaran, and I think you can never say to much about how good ventilation can affect the comfort of any sort of travel.
I am really enjoying your catamaran reviews, (and that is coming from a long standing mono hull sailor). I reckon you are leaving a real legacy for the sailing community. Imagine trying to do something similar for monohulls

Good review! I can’t afford a boat at all! I’m still watching!
Keep watching, we can’t afford this boat either 🤣🤣
Can't wait for your review on the Maverick!
Did you see the Kinetic 62 at the Annapolis boat show? New boat with some cool design features. Love your channel!
I am pretty sure I've watched all the revues and this "home", to me, is one of the top if not the top. Expensive as hell but it seem my favorites are all the most expensive. Well done!
cheers mate. dont forget to vote if you like it that much
Awesome guys was looking forward to this one, after also watching Distance Shores sail one, some time ago, I think it’s pretty sweet for sure.
it is indeed.
Why are you so big on the recessed hatches when they leak 2x as often ?
cant wait to see the maverick review!
soon my friend soon.
Great review, lovely to see you both well, didn't expect anything else of course ! will be skipping back to see your French canal journey, something id love to do,
one thing to mention on behalf of Discovery, their after-sales service is second to none, almost regardless of where you might be in the world,
I get that on good authority from a close friend & Discover owner.
oh the dealer service is world class.
Such a beauty I liked it the moment I saw it in the thumbnail to the poll ... quality yacht!
beautiful isnt it.

Glad you agree my friend.

My partner loved the woodwork in the Knysna more though. Looking forward to that review as well. D&S Vancouver.
"Come see our five to fifteen-year-old used boats from around the world, in all sorts of conditions!"
But, you do have some drawbacks here as well.
Along the way, I'd like to see something for older used cats that reflect percentage of value over the years
Also, I asked Keith over on Sailing Zatara about the hull slap, and he didn't actually answer what I was looking for, but their 585 doesn't seem to have too much of a problem, but then again, you have a 12 year old sleeping in that space! LOL
Oh yeah, Nick, you complained about headroom in the Privilege 510 master suite, but on the Discovery, Terysa couldn't stand full up getting into the bed in the Master Cabin, either.
My thoughts and observations.
Hello and many thanks. may I say that it is interesting to focus on hand rails and flash hatches, yes indeed. But, perhaps may I suggest a little focus on the mast foot, the stays, the counter fittings under the deck gears...Thanks a lot.
just adding a comment because it upranks your video... fun to look at things i wont spend for.... and its because i can afford it that i dont.
thanks for the comment mate
I believe your reviews have been very even handed. I have not heard you discuss any of the electric motor options possible. You may have and I missed it. Your opinion about the hybrid technologies would be interesting to hear.
we saw one on a Privilege 5.0 interesting.
Looking tru vidios again I begin think there most be some about how a boat looks after fx 7 years use and whit that also a resell value, so maybe need change view and thougts about these and other catamarans.
Love the Discovery monohulls and yes if i had the money yes please but im still loving the Seawind 1600
A beautiful boat
thank you for taking care of my kids!!!
They are the nicest and most genuine people. We had such a blast together and can't wait to catch up somewhere in the world soon.
Beautiful boat. Good review.
Him: Good joinery. Her: Everything else. 😀
I question your Performance criteria for this boat.
Thanks for the review.
we may do separate leagues like this when we have finished the whole series.
Just pointing out, not racing, but performance cruisers
Ladybirdsin16mm , it effects the score so a little more than pointing out.
@@tomtiernan8134 Yes, i was just pointing out that theyve not reviewed any racing boats, just performance cruises. I see your point tho
Paul and Sheryl new boat.....very nice😍
well if anything changes, shes still for sale.
It's really nice to have an ownersversion..absolutely
no question but how much time do you actually spend in the cabin, wouldn't you prefer if the choise had to be made an extra large salon & bridge deck area ?????
this owner thought the same.
A used Discovery 50 is about what our budget could stretch to
Thanks for the reply, guys.
I was surprised that you could award full marks without looking at the steering links.
thanks we will
Garcia makes a cat? Holy cat!
Hey could you have a lock at Amel 50 as well. I know it’s not a catamaran but it Loke’s stunning. Thanks. 😎
oh we just saw it at Annapolis. Amazing boat
Tony & Susan here, No engine compartment tour? What about Nick's critique of the steering linkage? Just sayin :D
We couldn’t get in. They were locked
Great series. If i had a million bucks i would want to go fast. These boats are about 1.2 million out of my price point.
We like fast as well.
Would think the raised hatches would help keep water out if you left them open in the rain. Does flush vs raised make a difference for shedding water from a big wave or spray?
not really. the flush ones have gutters.
thank you, great review!
what do you think about reviewing the balance cat?
I would never Judge a reviewer by his or her Wealth ,To me a none sail person your view is more than I will ever have 1st thing You sail more than a lot that use a keyboard to judge why not just enjoy the review if you don't like it look at something else. Ps there is a lotto where you just might have that cash to buy what ever :) Great Review awesome Vlog. Now i am going back to window shopping before someone tells me i don;t have the cash :).
haha, my bank have been telling me we dont have the cash too.
Great as usual. Did you step onboard the Swan 48 next door?🤔
no, not for review
Would love to see a walkthrough for the Dufour catamarans
Looking forward to seeing those
@@sailingrubyrose thanks
Fantastic channel, and thank you both so much!
thanks mate. we do try to remove bias
Have you reviewed Bali catamarans? What do you think?
Nice boat. No head space in master. Beautiful joinery but guessing fully spec’d out is
$1.5 Mil.
(not an extremely huge one don't see anything but a sub helping there)
Rogue waves arent a problem unless they break. However, i would want one where the cockpit and deck drain water easily.
This is an exceptional cat!
it is indeed.
Great video, thank you! At around 7 minutes in the video, the angle of the camera seems to show that if your are sitting in the main settee, facing aft and leaning agains the back of the seat, your head would hit the forward facing window. Any thoughts on that? Thanks
I think its just the camera angle. There didnt seem to be a problem.
That is built!!!❤️
I really hope you get to review a Maverick 440. I've seen few on TH-cam now and they look amazing.
Have you looked at the silent catamaran? Would love to see a review
question. Can the back sitting area be enclosed - protected from wind and rain? I could not see any provisioning for that.
yes, there is an option for a cockpit enclosure
Do not stop, please ;)
we have 7 more lined up.
Somehow it think this is a winner for the two of you. And I could easily see you sailing this cat around the world.
But I can’t look in you wallet.
Well made video.
Thanks for the review.
haha, theres not enough in our wallet!!!
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose
Maybe in 5 years or so.
Looking forward to the next video though.
Nick takes you to see the fancy Schmancy boats to tease you Terysa! And nothing more.....
Terysa, your on a boat, u dont need to change the sheets everyday, think of the washing! And also, but how does it sail? Or do they all sail the same?
It's a Discovery, what did you expect. Would like to have seen the engine spaces. Head room in master not so good. Small Nav. station. Hard top above helm is probably an option. Flush hatches needed. Would not look good but I would have forward raked windows in saloon. Meanwhile tyresa's hair looked great and whats his name needs to pull teeth for a year to build the kitty. LOL
Love that pulling teeth comment & the whats his name = good humour Sir !
Like on the Garcia's?
Wouldn't flush mount hatches be more prone to leaking ?
Wow, such a gorgeous, thoughtful space inside! But ack, that price!
I know right?
Nice boat, still like the Seawind, Question: Hatches-- Which hatch is likely to leak (especially with age) the flush or the overlap raised hatch. Stumping you toe I understand but durability to me would be the overlap raised hatch unless they arent overlaping a raised seal. Rather than the flush mount that is just pulled tightly onto a seal and doesn't overlap the raised outer rim. just wondering.
thats a good point my friend.
you have to look at the HH55 or HH50
Yes but we wont be reviewing them. We went on board and they were so so nice to us. They had no idea who we were, and clearly had no money, but entertained us anyway.
