The Best Coffee Maker Ever? Our Review of the Philips 3200 Series Espresso Machine with LatteGo

  • First off: This isn’t a review so much as it is a tribute to our insurmountable addiction to coffee, and the machine that gives us our fix. This is NOT a paid review - we just really dig this thing.
    Meet the Philips 3200 Series Fully Automatic Espresso Machine with LatteGo. We refer to it as the Coffee Machine. It does a lot of things we’ve come to depend on and we think it was worth spending a good chunk of change on a box that makes coffee.
    It makes coffee, espresso, americanos, lattes and cappuccinos and it’s dead simple to use.
    Is it the best coffee machine for the price? We think so. I mean, we went way out of our way to overshoot the F%$& out of this Review Video, didn't we? You be the judge!

    I shopped for a year and settled on this unit as a group gift for a cousin who bought her her first house. We bought it for her shortly after it was released two years ago. That amazing milk carafe but it's so easy to clean without having to worry about pickup tubes is finally got sold me on this unit. I just found out my cousin has never actually fully washed the grounds bin and she is also never used the food grade grease on the grinder mechanisms that you're supposed to keep lubricated 😬😭. That said, she says it performed flawlessly and she's never had a problem she just changes the water filter occasionally

    Its a very good machine . I have the latte go EP5335/10 which makes the same coffie but its a bit more complicated (this one is much simpler to use). The coffie however is beyond good. I finaly understood what good coffie tasts like. Now there is a new model Philips Saeco EP5447/94 which is a combination of both which is amazing.

      A trick we found out if you just want steamed milk like for hot chocolate or chai tea, just put it on bypass like you're going to put in pre-ground coffee, the unit does not know that you didn't put coffee grounds in and after you get your desired amount of steamed milk just suspend the Brewing cycle.
      My cousin uses hers daily, when she has family and friends over it gets used heavily because everybody thinks it's so fun that they're all ridiculously over-caffeinated. We bought it for her for a housewarming present 2 years ago when they first came out. I just found out she has never descaled it and she never lubed the mechanisms inside, like zero maintenance other than changing out the water filter and every week if she remembers, she rinses out the brew chamber yet it still works flawlessly.
      I'm putting this out here on everybody's comment because it's so cool.

    I have had my Phillips 3200 LatteGo for a little over two weeks now and it is a dream come true. We were spending a fortune in K cups each month in addition to my weekend pots of drip brewed coffee. As far as I can tell it is the only Super Automatic Coffee Machine that offers regular coffee as an option and not just Americano. The only bad thing is that the coffee tastes so good it is taking a lot of will power to restrict myself to the usual three cups of coffee I indulged in before. I could easily drink a half dozen cups of coffee a day from this machine. As you pointed out the milk frothing part is genius and does away with the complicated and costly chore of keeping plastic lines,etc clean.

    I’ve had the 4300 for a few weeks and it got returned. At first I was happy with it, but after awhile I noticed the espresso was lackluster at best, and I have used Lavassa Super Cremma. I now own a semi automatic and to my taste buds, it yields a much better espresso.

      @@John112h I got the Breville Barista Pro in black stainless steel. There's a bit of a learning curve to get the espresso just right, but at least with this one, different grind settings make a tremendous difference. With a suerautomatic, since most of them use a forced portafilter, no matter the grind setting, the coffee came out almost the same way, which was quite sour to my taste buds. There are many others to choose from. There's the Gaggia Classic Pro, and the Rancilio Silvia. But I didn't get those because they wouldn't look good in my kitchen. Outstanding review! I now feel silly looking at machines by Jura and Rocket. Jura's get cost prohibitive very quickly; the Rocket feels like I'm buying a hobby. I purchased the Philips 3200 LatteGo this evening. You sold me! I'm looking forward to good tasting coffee.

    I've had a superautomatic for 6 or 7 years now. It broke down recently and we were in a bit of a panic trying to get a good cup of coffee going off the cuff. Had to break out the old grinder, a mini drip machine, and made a barely passable few cups until getting the Saeco sorted. If you truly enjoy coffee, $800-$1000 is worth it for the consistency and ease. Amortize it out over 5 years and it's peanuts per day. I think I'll put this one at the top of my list next time there's an issue with my current one. Thanks for the review.

    I use Delonghi 5 years so far and no issues. For me going for Philips would be a leap of faith since I don't know if durability is as great as Delonghi

    • @Clockwork9
      @Clockwork9  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've had Delonghi for years as well (at home) and we have a Delonghi Nespresso machine that has lasted for about 7 years without fail. As long as maintenance is kept up, any machine should be rock solid from a manufacturer like Philips. It's always possible to get a failure, however we stand by this machine. It is going quite strong and I'd say we use it far, far more than an average home user might.
      We probably push a minimum of 12-20 cycles of the machine a day, 5 days a week and have for over a year at this point. Keeping it clean (rinse brew unit once a week), using the aquaclean hardwater filters and descaling + degreasing the machine as recommended has kept the coffee tasting fresh and the machine is reliable.

  • @harishanandthilakan8604
    @harishanandthilakan8604 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice video. Curious - for the sorta volume you guys pump out of the machine, how come you guys didn't choose to get the config with the AquaClean Filter unit? Or did they just not have it back then?

    • @Clockwork9
      @Clockwork9  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The model we have in the video does have an AquaClean Filter. Unless there's another option, they should all have come with that standard. We go through roughly 10-15 cups a day on average.

    Thats what I thought first! Very much perfect from outside and on the paper (and of course in review videos here and there). Ordered it a while ago; had it for 2 months. Struggled with it every single time. Tried so many different coffee beans (and yes I know not the dark roast oily ones...). ALL wasted! Never consistent, never as good as it should have been in terms of taste and crema. Finally had to return it! This is one of those machine that has Everything, Except the Main thing, which is making a great espresso/latte!

    • @Clockwork9
      @Clockwork9  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perhaps you had a dud of some kind? I'm not sure I just know that we use it probably 20 times a day 5 days a week and it is crazy consistent and the taste/crema is as expected. We go through a 2lb bag of the Lavazza Super Crema every 2.5 weeks or so.

    Thanks for the video, I have juste acquired a 3200 series in France and my lungo coffee is light dark like caramel. The taste is bitter I tried 2 different beans (Italian and Guatemala). My grinder setup is 3. Do you know if this could be a machine issue or strictly coffee choice ? Thanks.

    • @Clockwork9
      @Clockwork9  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like it could be a machine issue, or even the grinder setting. In order to adjust the grinder you need to do it while the machine is actually grinding and not when it's idle. We keep ours set on the middle (medium) setting. The coffee should not be caramel color, ours is quite dark.

    I had the 3200. I liked it. It's way better than a pod machine and I'm happy I had one. But now I have the Bambino (and a Baratza Vario grinder I've had forever) for about the same price in total and while the 3200 was a step up from the Krups espresso machine I had, and was easier to use, a good espresso machine has turned out as convenient as the 3200 overall and produces better results.

I didn't mention that my 3200 broke after a year (I'll assume it was just mine and that doesn't normally happen as it was the pump.. so I'm not holding it against them). If I were to buy a saeco/phillips I'd definitely get one that had independent water and coffee quantity options which I think their later models do.

    • @donutwindy
      @donutwindy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@marble8888 any true espresso anything will bring out more flavor than a coffee maker. A straight semi auto will produce a slightly brighter flavor than the Phillips but they are pretty close and you'll never know if you don't compare them side by side. Bambino will just milk froth but so will any semi auto. The bambino plus attempts to automate that part. But you lose the hot water output and it costs a lot more.

    • @Clockwork9
      @Clockwork9  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's an espresso machine 100% which means it makes a puck of coffee to pump the water through under pressure.
      However! There is a 'coffee' button it it which we use every day and it makes a fantastic cup of coffee. It's espresso beans but with much more water used in the cup so it balances out nicely.

      We run a pretty constant rotation of all sorts of milk. Right now we’re doing oat milk and usually almond milk. You do get less of a froth than you would with regular milk but not by much. Runs through the lattego just fine.
