I will say I like quality and capability of my Toyota Sequoia with the 5.7 and 4x4 and the Land Cruiser looks cool too when compared to other available offerings in the US but it's nothing compared to the Land Cruiser 70 series overseas with the 4.5 v8 turbo diesel, solid front and rear axles, and snorkel. Bring that to America and compare it to anything else you can get in this country. I'd buy one.
lets be clear in the difference between "off roader" and "overlander" because in the US they are often used interchangeably but they really shouldn't be. Overlanding is vehicle based adventure travel, that means sometimes going on rough trails and needing capability but more importantly its about durability, reliability and the ability to carry a load safely. Its not a matter of just being able to go off road with a cargo box on the roof. Any 4x4 can be made to go off road, but a good overlander is so much more.
@@retrokingranch I'm assuming you're an H2 owner or someone who wishes they had one? There's a reason why you don't see H2s as a common overlanding vehicle: they are too big for the tighter trails, reliability isn't their strong suit, and their MPG is horrible. When you're traveling great distances, "adventure travel", MPG kind of matters because you don't want to be stranded in the middle of nowhere. You'd need to carry a 55gal oil drum to be confident taking off into the backwoods with an H2. This is why more midsize trucks and SUVs are common overlanders - they are more nimble on the trails due to lighter weight, can travel greater distances because of greater MPG, and there's way more third party accessories in those segments.
@@mikec3454 I'm an H2 owner and use it as an overlanding vehicle. I also use a 2006 Tundra as an overlanding platform. The Tundra is a great deal smaller and gets moderately better gas mileage. It can't carry as much as my H2, isn't better off road by any stretch of imagination, isn't *more* reliable - though my Tundra is solid, and generally isn't my choice to go take a trip in. The H2 get's the nod for long trips mainly because it has capacity and it's proven to be durable/reliable. I have done the same basic mods that TFL did to their H2, with the addition of leveling, different UCP and 37" KM3's. I think the main reason you don't see Hummers often is simply because there are far fewer of them than other makes. Its almost always been 2nd/3rd owners for these and other high end touring wagons since the early 90's. No shock there. I mean even the ubiquitous 80 series Land Cruiser was bought by some dentist new before people like me got a hold of it.
I personally love that these live easy, sheltered first lives. Im happy letting them pay the depreciation curve...its not going to matter how many easy miles are on these by the time people who intent to tour with them get their hands on them.
My Dad bought one of the first H2’s (#5-10) in Canada back in 2003 and still has it to this day. Definetely one of the best cars I’ve been in. Cant say I’ve driven it because my dad treats that thing like the Ferrari from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
The only catch here is that the Land Cruiser actually made it there and back reliably STOCK, irregardless of the price, it's a vehicle that will last for decades stock. The jeep with all the work and addon parts ran well over 50% the cost of the Toyota Landcruiser, without needing any modification, aftermarket parts, adjustments or enhancement, which the Jeep had ALL of, and the Hummer had Half of. If you're going to buy a Jeep wrangler new, and modify it, buy a Landcruiser used and the same. You'll get better longevity and reliability. I Can justify the Hummer if it was gotten for a cheap price and you added in the work. But they're not making it anymore
News that matter The Hummer had absolutey no modifications at all. The 35" tires the H2 had are from factory. The only thing that was changed was the tire tie rods, which then isn't even a mod, it's more of a necessity than a mod. The H2 also isn't lifted.
I think the hummer is just misunderstood. When it came out, gas was cheap and the vehicle could outperform just about anything off road with its factory lockers and ground clearance. For the Toyota being close to 15 years newer, I don't think the hummer did too bad.
my 80 series gets 26mpg in hard going and 29mpg on the highway. Naturally aspirated diesel. Solid as a rock, no modern 4WD can compare. Wanna try? I live in The Coorong National Park so come on all takers
oops yep. More power more fuel. But source the 4.2 litre 6 cylinder naturally aspirated diesel from the Toyota bus for this vehicle. 24 valve turbo if you want the extra maintenance. Personally I find a mountain to be a mountain and I can get over all. Each to their own
the 70 series 6 cylinder diesel tray top is considered as the ultimate boundary riders vehicle in Australia for Roo, Dingo and Fox Shooters. I ain't shitting you for I've done it. Slower than the petrol until you get to rough terrain, the diesel in any variant is unstoppable. Also half the fuel. Personally I'd opt for the naturally aspirated (since I have one in my Landcruiser) because at 130hp this works out perfectly on sand. Always seek a vehicle with the front diff locker but if a competent offroad driver the standard rear wheel LSD is awesome enough. But yeh rear LSD + front locked diff is amazing.. Get an AWB locker on the front if you don't have the Toyota unit. Then you will be unstoppable. The "Dog Fence" runs from Ceduna to the SA border and a 70 series tray top is considered the ultimate rig - you can make good money shooting roos and foxes with one of these. But only one of these Toyotas ( or maybe a very good Nissan GQ diesel ) for anything else breaks. That is the strength of 60, 70 and 80's series Landcruisers - they never break. If fitting big tyres for some obscure reason up grade the front Burfield joints and axles.. but why you'd want that useless extra expense is beyond my reason. But hey I simply live and work in Central Australia so who gives a damn eh
Edwin Henry Blachford I live in Colorado, USA right now. I've got a Petrol FJ Cruiser. Pretty much stock but a rear locker. I work on access roads and right of ways in the oil field. So mud and sand is where I drive for work and I play on the rocks in the mountains. I want to go on vacation out in Australia for a few months and get a Land cruiser to hit a few nice tracks up.
There will always be comments like "my civic can do those trails"...Maybe, but it's awesome that you guys actually test trucks off road, while other channels just talk about it.
I would choose the Hummer, I don't care if I damage it because it's rough, it's higher, probably could go a lots faster than the Toyota in offroad, but he didn't dare.
I live in Thornton, today I saw what looked like Andre in the hummer near 136th ave and Colorado Blvd! First time seeing any of the TFL gang around in Colorado. Denver native and I'm a fan man! Keep up the great videos! 🤘🏻😎

Define rock crawler- Tommy's Jeep was crawling over those rocks just fine. The LC and Hummer are definitely not rock crawlers. The H2 can only be described as a rock crusher, and the LC, well my missus owns one, and I'm afraid to say and its a mall crawler.
It had the pathetic I5 engine though, and was just a rebodied chevy Colorado. One of the owners of a bike shop I worked for had one, it could barely tow a bike trailer on the freeway as it was. Nothing awesome about it at all. Now if it had the I6 other models based on the same chassis had it would have been nicer.
Awesome! More russian Andre! I think land cruisers engeneer forgot what that name mean... these side steps are ridiculous and have no place on a land cruiser!
LandCruisers have become a luxury career than off-road vehicle. For that purpose, from Toyota, get something else like Tacoma or 4 Runner ( and Landcruiser 70's series ).
chaotic Alteric It’s getting old ( web wheelers) Again there is no lift on this H2! Tire rod end that they replaced are a MUST on H2 (stock are from GEO Metro probably) and I don’t see how it qualifies as upgrade. LC is 15 years younger, so software at this point must be better. If run LC on any trail ( forest service road doesn’t qualify as trail) it will leave front and rear bumpers and side skirts behind. In US only 2 Yotas come close to be off-roaders - 4Runner and Taco. And they need a lot of help too.
I would actually keep the running boards on because it doesn’t come with factory sliders would protect the vehicle. Additionally, replacing runners would be cheaper than replacing door panels, the entire door, rocker panel, etc. if it got smashed on the trail.
I agree. Comparing a modified to a stock vehicle yields what conclusion?? Anyone who wants to use a Hummer as a daily driver I wish them luck. They aren't reliable and you pretty much can't see a thing out of their windows.
Although a fun video to watch, I see the concept of overlanding being misused.. rock crawling and overlanding are 2 very different things. The land cruiser is an awesome platform for an overland build, but the H2 (and this is a very personal opinion) is not a good vehicle at all: it huge, too long of a wheelbase, NOT reliable, requires lots of upgrades.. I suggest making a comparison video between a land cruiser and a Nissan Patrol - vehicles designed with similar features. Cheers!
sorry for your prejudice of the Hummer. Just a little education about this vehicle. The reason so many people liked the Hummer was it didn't need any upgrades. Except for the Tie Rods, I will agree with that... what was the reason behind that I will never know. The Hummer was ready for off road right from the show room. The front end was built like a chevy 2500 for the weight of the motor and the rear end 1500 for towing. It comes with 33's, and you can put 35's or 37's without upgrading anything. the only thing besides the tie rods I have upgraded was the exhaust system. I installed 4 inch pipes with a Evenflo muffler, and a better air filter. it puts me up to 362 HP, I can do a little more to get to 400 but then it will start messing with my gas mileage. Right now I get 12 to 13 in town and 19 highway, maintaining the speed at 1500 RPMs I'm at 22 to 23. That's no BS, give me your email and I'll send you a picture to prove it. The reason why I get this type of mileage is because I don't drive it like I stole it. I have owned this one for the past 5 years and has been a solid vehicle. All I have done to it was normal oil changes and schedule maintenance, plugs and cables, air filter, belts, trans and radiator flush.
@eric Parks - Don't you have that backwards? I think the rear was the 14 bolt corporate axle (from the 3/4 ton) and the front was the half ton axle. As an aside I think the H2 could have really been something special had it been allowed to survive past rubbish GM and their dark 2000's. the mechanical engineering was quiet good and some legit effort went into making it capable. I even wrote a thing about it years ago. oppositelock.kinja.com/why-the-h2-should-have-been-a-classic-1447347444
Hello Eric, First of all I want to thank you for the enlightment in the H2. Now, as I wrote in the comment above, this is a personal opinion and I don't mean to offend anyone. I work in the auto industry and have been around cars for over 30 years. My experience with H2s have been very bad and this is my grounds to make such statement - reliability. To my knowledge - and I might be wrong - is that the H2 is a GMC Denali with a different shell and bigger tires, again I might be wrong. I wanted to express my surprise when i see "Experts" using terminology that they don't have clear. Overlanding and rock crawling are very different activities and the vehicles are designed with that in mind. Size, weight and shape and factors that are taken in consideration when designing a vehicle for a purpose and if we're talk about overlanding there are other options that might be more suitable. Like i stated before, overlanding and rock crawling or even back-road offroading, are not the same thing. Cheers!
What channel are you using on them Beofengs? They technically can not legally be used without a HAM radio license, although low power mode on MURS channels meets output specs to use under MURS rules.
For trails like this all that matters is approach, departure, and clearance. Breakover isn't really a factor. That's the difference between rock crawling and rock hopping. Furthermore, rock crawling doesn't mind solid axles, while rock hopping will have problems with a solid axle and diff getting stuck on jagged rocks and such. Likewise, thats the primary difference between weekend rock crawler vehicles and overland vehicles.

I loved this video. Good comparison, and I got such a kick out of Nathan and Andre messing with each other, especially the Russian parts.
The land cruiser is great but I don't see people that are overlanding pay 85000 for one. Maybe get a used one they are very reliable.
look around...they are driven by dr's wives...its just a big bloated station wagon to them, not an offroader
Used ones are still expensive
Its almost always been 2nd/3rd owners for these and other high end touring wagons since the early 90's. No shock there. I mean even the ubiquitous 80 series Land Cruiser was bought by some dentist new before people like me got a hold of it.
I personally love that these live easy, sheltered first lives. Im happy letting them pay the depreciation curve...its not going to matter how many easy miles are on these by the time people who intent to tour with them get their hands on them.
I've been waiting for a video like this. Thanks!!
H2 hummer is not the most hated vehicle. Probably the the Honda rigiline
Absolutely love these H2 vids!
Who thinks these guys should do a comedy episode keeping in characters like they featured in this episode? Thumbs up if ya!
tops303 sounds like a plan, I thought it was comedy
LOL! 12.9 mpg for the TLC?! I used to have a 1969 FJ-55 that routinely got 15 mpg on the road.
That hummer is awesome and it was getting basically the same mpg as a brand new suv.
There is no way that Jeep with its add-ons cost $44K. I thought they bought it used?
News that matter
The Hummer had absolutey no modifications at all. The 35" tires the H2 had are from factory. The only thing that was changed was the tire tie rods, which then isn't even a mod, it's more of a necessity than a mod. The H2 also isn't lifted.
the h2 is stock.
@@retrokingranch you may be right. If you are then I am mistaken. My apologies. I'll look into it and confirm
Edwin Henry Blachford but no American 80 series Land cruiser had a diesel so a bit hard to compare.
oops yep. More power more fuel. But source the 4.2 litre 6 cylinder naturally aspirated diesel from the Toyota bus for this vehicle. 24 valve turbo if you want the extra maintenance. Personally I find a mountain to be a mountain and I can get over all. Each to their own
Edwin Henry Blachford I'd love a diesel Land cruiser been looking for a nice 60 or 70 series to import.
the 70 series 6 cylinder diesel tray top is considered as the ultimate boundary riders vehicle in Australia for Roo, Dingo and Fox Shooters.
One of your best videos yet I laughed all the way through it and learned a few things awesome job guys
The Hummer looks lots more sturdy for these trails..
It might look the part but it can't play the part...worst truck in history..
@@MultiDreamer1979 that's a lie.
Looks can be deceiving
@@ismailtopa3671 maybe, but not on the H2.
@Bezo Balo no shit...
There will always be comments like "my civic can do those trails"...Maybe, but it's awesome that you guys actually test trucks off road, while other channels just talk about it.
Tfl truck always makes the highest quality content.
I would choose the Hummer, I don't care if I damage it because it's rough, it's higher, probably could go a lots faster than the Toyota in offroad, but he didn't dare.
i loved Nathan's Russian impersonation! Hilarious.
Все равно на русском говорит с акцентом
I live in Thornton, today I saw what looked like Andre in the hummer near 136th ave and Colorado Blvd! First time seeing any of the TFL gang around in Colorado. Denver native and I'm a fan man! Keep up the great videos! 🤘🏻😎
Why you gave the h2 and wrangler bigger tires lifted them and change them and kept the land cruiser stock ?!
H2 is not lifted, u can fit 37" without any mods.
It’s a loan.
I'm sorry I didn't make it up to the Overland Expo this year, had I seen this before now I would have gone just to meet up with you guys!
Perfect Russian banter. This one was special guys.
You guys are so funny!TLC here.
Why people hate the hammer so much it's a nice car. I love it..
Its not a car its not a truck its hummer the only hummer
Still enjoy my 2 hummers h2 !!
And another thing, the Hummer should be the one checking the trail, not that jeep.
Lovely review. Thanks for the video
"sleeping pod" hmm thats inteesting...they have this new invention called a tent
Love how they (russian🇷🇺 and American🇺🇸) are good friends.... especially how that American man tried fake russian funny.......lol 😂😂😂 love from india🇮🇳...
You should compare to the 80 or 100 series land cruiser. New land cruisers are mall crawlers now.
Neal Bird 80 series was a mall crawler when new also. Saw plenty of them in the 90’s. Solid front axle though!
$85000 LC with side steps and crap tires...Sounds like Toyota in the US. Sad that the only Land Cruiser we get in the US is a soccer mobile.
Ryan Martinage It's literally exactly the same what we get here in the middle east.
Ibraheem Al hadede I'd love to get the ones from Australia. Solid front axle v8 turbo diesel.
Ryan Martinage You mean the older style? Because you will never get a solid axle in the current models.
You can buy new 70 series LC in AUS with the solid front axle.
No. You can buy brand new 2018 model year 70 series Land Cruisers with all the things that made them famous.
Tommy acts like his Jeep is a rock crawler lol I saw that video of Tommy’s Jeep compared to a real rubicon ... yeah big difference
GMC Jae well, it is a rock crawler, just not the best one 😊
What do you mean Tommy’s Jeep did just as good as the rubicon if not better.
Define rock crawler- Tommy's Jeep was crawling over those rocks just fine. The LC and Hummer are definitely not rock crawlers. The H2 can only be described as a rock crusher, and the LC, well my missus owns one, and I'm afraid to say and its a mall crawler.
Are you guys gonna be at the Overland Expo all weekend? Or just the 18th?
Brian Lipman 18th and 19th
You already know the awnser I would choose the land cruiser perfect tank
H3 would make a great offroader, especially if you can find the off road package
Oldbmwr100rs my 2008 H3 is the Alpha model and has the 5.3 V8. It’s a beast
Awesome! More russian Andre! I think land cruisers engeneer forgot what that name mean... these side steps are ridiculous and have no place on a land cruiser!
Yes Land Cruisers are rock crawlers lol.. Best crawlers of ALL large SUVs, and still the best overland rig I have ever owned
That was informative and funny, thanks guys for another great show!
I wish I was working with you guys. Love your JOB
LandCruisers have become a luxury career than off-road vehicle. For that purpose, from Toyota, get something else like Tacoma or 4 Runner ( and Landcruiser 70's series ).
its been this way for a while. My 97 came one way - loaded. Doesn't mean its less capable.
Estes Park! Love that trail, but we did it on a rented RZR.
land cruiser would beat the hummer in all categories if they were both stock
This trucks are STOCK.
Nope, they tuned the steering, lifted it and changed the tires. The LC is bone stock
chaotic Alteric
It’s getting old ( web wheelers)
Again there is no lift on this H2!
M6serge H2 got 35 inch tires!!! The LC have only 31 inch tires so much difference
97octane
35” tire is OEM tire from factory
U can fit 37” with no lift
I would actually keep the running boards on because it doesn’t come with factory sliders would protect the vehicle. Additionally, replacing runners would be cheaper than replacing door panels, the entire door, rocker panel, etc. if it got smashed on the trail.
You guys are awesome, keep it up 😂😂😂🤣🤣
HahasoNotorious 327 what is so funny?
You guys are awesome... keep making great videos...
I can tell Toyota’s land cruiser will out perform the hummer before I watch it.
Eastwood007x I can feel your disappointment from here.
Ibraheem Al hadede I probably won’t be disappointed. I’ve see cruisers do cool stuff
Ibraheem Al hadede you dont know anything about land cruisers then
Watch the whole video. Only department the LC wins is interior imo.
Ignore the other comments, the LandCruiser was on road tires,
all comparisons must be made on identical tires and pressures.
Nah... I'll go with H2 anyday doesn't matter if it sucks or whatsoever, I'm gonna stick with it, the point is I hate Toyota LMAO
Most hated what ?!
Excuse me! Who does not love hummers !
They are very unique
H2 with off road tires Vs LC with street tires = H2 is better at rock climbing than LC. Lol. Very intelligent deduction there.
The hummer screams “I refinanced my house to buy this”
U do realize they paid probable 10K or less for that H2 VS $85,000 LC. So guy with LC will try to refi first.
M6serge when they were new
I paid 56 out of door for top spec H2 in 08. Looks like it’s still considerably cheaper that LC.
M6serge I think he is implying that only the people who would need to refinance would own the h2
Would love to see this comparison with an "overland prepared" 100-series Land Cruiser (probably closer apples to apples cost-wise)
I agree. Comparing a modified to a stock vehicle yields what conclusion?? Anyone who wants to use a Hummer as a daily driver I wish them luck. They aren't reliable and you pretty much can't see a thing out of their windows.
I chose the H2 before the test and i chose the H2 after the test!
What psi were you guys running? Should put a troops in the mix.
I love the land cruises,, with all my heart plus look how he nasty it
Toyota love u
i had an 86 land criuser with a lift kit and prity beefy tires. i loved that truck.....wish i still had it
70 series LC is Golden
Absolutely
Early model 80 series in diesel. Unbreakable
Al Al why not! the 70 series has only been in production 3x longer. It was so good they just retired it, like a jersey I guess.
That was fun) especially at the end when Andrei was reading in Russian)
Although a fun video to watch, I see the concept of overlanding being misused.. rock crawling and overlanding are 2 very different things. The land cruiser is an awesome platform for an overland build, but the H2 (and this is a very personal opinion) is not a good vehicle at all: it huge, too long of a wheelbase, NOT reliable, requires lots of upgrades.. I suggest making a comparison video between a land cruiser and a Nissan Patrol - vehicles designed with similar features.
Cheers!
Yeah, "overland" gets thrown around a little too caviler in the US these days. No it doesn't mean going off road for a few hours.
sorry for your prejudice of the Hummer.
Cheers!
Roberto Olivar
Yeah, and opinion does not equal fact.
I love the hummer! It’s bad ass.
The title should be, “Old vs Older”
Goco Family Facelifts don't make an 10 Y.O. design modern.
jironmeister yeah the LC200 is so outdated for a car you can still buy brand new today.
Allen D. Typical Toyota fanboyism, defending their lack of innovation and overall blandness. There is a reason it’s called the Bland Cruiser.
Alex Stelling and you are the only one calling it bland cruiser.
Alex Stelling or maybe americans are so lazy that they need a vehicle that drives for them?
LAND CRUISER bast off-road
Hummer is bestest.
Great video TFL! I really wish the Sequoia looked leaner and meaner like it's big brother Land Cruiser. Fingers crossed Toyota does this by 2020.
Have some friends from Yemen they are definitely Toyota people!
Poppy Neese Most people in the middle east. But people here don't mind GM trucks. It's just that the LC is more common and used to be simple to fix.
still is if your one of the countries with the 70 series
Poppy Neese I’m from Yemen I like Toyota but I like other brands too
Militants love Toyota.
Did that 200series not have adjustable ride height, all of my LC’s have either hydraulic or air suspension
I’m curious to see a off road test between the Land Cruiser and the Nissan Armada
Best Toyota 4x4 is 70 Series. Efficiency, capability, durability and simple electronic for easy fixing. New 2019 Land Cruiser for suburban off-road. I experienced myself this summer.
The Hummer seemed like it handled better funny enough. Means the land cruiser did not live up to expectations for that price.
Landcruiser was on road tyres
I think you guys did yourselves a favor when you picked up Andre as part of your crew. I love it when you guys crack jokes in Russian. It's like suttle comedy. Thanks for putting this up. Vote for Andre!
Soo... A modified H2 vs. Stock Land Cruiser...
I'd still take the Land Cruiser
Nathan "However" Adlen. :D :D :D
I have a laugh every time he says "however", it's like his thing, a trademark.
Like Stacey David's "as you can see....".
For once you guy's did a review including a Toyota where you did not beat down on the yota as if it was a P.O.S
the old early 80s model F350's is excellent off road with a good set of 33's i have yet to get stuck on something i could not rock out of but i did swop for a thicker skid plate for my rear 38 gallon reserve tank as it will make rocks sometimes when recording from a drop off
